Metropolitan-body Top Sportsman features twin-turbo Chevy power

GUELPH, ONTARIO (January 25, 2012) – Wes Goddard may have one of the older car body styles in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, but underneath his 1958 Nash Metropolitan is state-of-the-art in drag racing.

Powered by a 509-cubic inch Chevrolet engine, Goddard’s Nash sports a set of twin 76-millimeter Precision Turbochargers which can power the 101-inch wheelbase down the quarter mile at speeds over 200 mph.

This season will be the first full year for the Top Sportsman car, which was assembled last year and saw limited use in Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts action.

“It’s been lots of learning,” noted Goddard, who is not only the driver of the Hell Billy Racing entry, but performs crew chief duties as well. “The car was all brand new when we got it down the track late last year at Cayuga.

“But the power is not an issue,” he continued. “I was able to go 200 mph with the gates (wastegates on the turbochargers open). With everything in order, we should be getting 2400 horsepower.”

The engine was built by fellow series competitor Fred DeJong, who lives in Puslinch, Ontario, just down the road from Goddard’s home town of Guelph. Goddard’s brother Frank drives the DeJonge car, which is also a twin-turbocharged car, but carries larger 88-mm turbos.

“We’ve got the smaller turbos as I want to bracket race the car as well,” said Goddard. “The smaller turbos spool up faster, and I’m hoping no body will be able to burn me down at the line.”

Building the power in turbocharged engines is different than a supercharged engine, and the boost must be built up with engine revs on the starting line. The longer the build-up, the stronger the engine gets, but the possibility of internal havoc inside the engine increases before the green light is shown on the tree.

“If the tune-up is good, and the engine and turbos are within their parameters, the engine should be pretty good,” Goddard said, adding that maintenance can be less with a turbocharged engine if all is set up correctly.

The fuel system on the car is a Big Stuff 3 unit, and a Powerglide two-speed sits behind the engine. Goddard built the car’s chassis himself, as well as the unique body, building a mold of an original Metropolitan body and then casting the fiberglass unit.

Goddard started racing about 20 years ago, staring with an 11-second car and working into the faster machines. Helping him with the effort this year is father Jim Goddard, as well as Mike Collins and Rob Currie. He is currently looking for sponsorship, citing “this level of racing is getting expensive.”

For Goddard, who ran in the series in 2009 and took 2010 off to design and build this new car, he enjoys the looks he gets from the Metro.

“Everybody looks at it,” he said. “It’s the size of a golf cart, but it’s straight as an arrow down the track.”

And he says he will be ready for serious action this year.

“The Quick 32 is a great series,” he noted. “And we’re going to swing a big hammer this year.”

Goddard and his competition will be on hand for the Quick 32 Sportsman Series opener May 18-20 for the Victoria Day Challenge at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park, the first of six events for the popular series this season.

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series’ companion series, the Pro Modified Racing Association, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series, will also be at Cayuga for this event.

LISTOWEL, ONTARIO (January 23, 2012) – The Quick 32 Sportsman Series is pleased to announce the continued support of Ideal Supply and NAPA for the popular drag race series.

The auto parts, electrical components, and industrial automation company, which has provided major sponsorship to the Quick 32 Sportsman Series for the past three years, will offer the same support for the next two years.

CAYUGA, ONTARIO (January 19, 2012) – Three of the top drag racing series have announced an additional event for the 2012 season.

The Pro Modified Racing Association, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series presented by Wiseco Performance Products will compete August 3-5 in the Community Weekend event at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park along with the other 2012 dates.

For the upcoming season, the PMRA will compete in an unprecedented seven races, while the Quick 32 Sportsman Series and the PBSS will each compete in six events. All three series will compete together with the exception of the PMRA competing July 20-22 at the IHRA Nitro Jam Nationals at the Grand Bend Motorplex.

“We are very pleased to have added this additional date,” said Bruce Mehlenbacher, Director of Operations for all three series. “We have been given the opportunity to show our fans more of the best in Pro Modified, Sportsman, and Motorcycle/Snowmobile drag racing.”

MARTIN, MICHIGAN (December 21, 2011) – US 131 Motorsports Park will be celebrating its 50th year of operation in 2012, and the Pro Modified Racing Association, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series will be part of those celebrations.

The three popular drag racing series will race at the south-western Michigan track June 8-9, for the second event on the 2012 calendar.

The race at US 131 Motorsports Park, to be known as the Summer Showdown, will be the first for the PMRA, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, or the PBSS.

“We’re very excited in going to US 131 Motorsports Park,” said Bruce Mehlenbacher, Director of Operations for the three Series. “This is our first time in Michigan, and US 131 is a perfect fit for our three Series. Not only will it give each Series and its teams a chance to showcase in a new market, but also an opportunity for new competitors to tryout our Series. Michigan is a hot-bed of serious and very competitive race teams.”

Opened in 1962, the facility received a $14 million upgrade 10 years ago, and continues to host a major IHRA National event.

“We’ve worked with Bruce (Mehlenbacher) for several years now, and we finally got a date set up,” said the track’s General Manager Jason Peterson. “This weekend will be a stand-alone event, and we’re looking forward to it.”

Peterson added that admission prices for the Summer Showdown will be very affordable. An adult pass for Friday, June 8 will be $12, and for Saturday, $15 will get you through the gate.

A test and tune session for all PMRA, Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and PBSS racers will be held June 8, along with a qualifying round. The remaining qualifiers will be held June 9, and then elimination rounds will take place

“US 131 Motorsports Park is a fabulous track,” said two-time Quick 32 Sportsman Series champion Kevin Wicke of Stratford, Ontario. “We have raced there many, many times. The teams in that area know all about our Series, they will be gunning for us.”

Wicke, who drives the K&K Racing Dodge Stratus, won in Top Sportsman class at the IHRA National event at the track in 2007, and has been runner-up in the class twice.

“It’s a great track,” he continued. “I’m glad we’re going there, and I know all the racers can’t wait to get there.”

All three Series will open the 2012 season with the Victoria Day Weekend Challenge at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park May 18-20. At present, the PMRA will be racing in six events next year, and plans are underway to add another event to the Quick 32 Sportsman Series and PBSS to bring their complement of races to six as well.

CAYUGA, ONTARIO (December 1, 2011) – Three of the top drag racing series in North America have announced their 2012 schedules.

The Pro Modified Racing Association, The Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series will take to the strips next season starting with the Victoria Day Weekend Challenge May 18-20.

This traditional opener is held on the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park. The race will mark the start of the eighth season for the PMRA, the fourth season for the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the second year for the PBSS.

A new event will take place in 2012, as all three series head to Martin, Michigan June 8-9 to compete at US131 Motorsports Park for an inaugural race at the IHRA facility.

The racers return to Cayuga June 22-24 to take part in the popular Canadian Nitro Nationals, and then the PMRA will compete at the IHRA MOPAR Nitro Jam Nationals at the Grand Bend Motorplex July 20-22. This will be for the PMRA Pro Modifieds only.

All three series return to Grand Bend August 10-12 for the annual Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts, an event which usually attracts a record number of competitors.

Then it’s back to Grand Bend August 31 – September 2 for the annual Thunder by the Beach Labor Day race.

“We have a well-rounded set of races at great venues set up for next year,” said Bruce Mehlenbacher, Director of Operations for all three series. “And the event at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin is a first for us. We are looking forward to racing at a Michigan track for the first time in our history.

“While we have six races scheduled for the PMRA,” he continued, “we are planning on adding another event to both the Quick 32 Sportsman Series and PBSS to bring their compliment of races up to six as well for next year.”

BURLINGTON, ONTARIO (November 20, 2011) – The Pro Modified Racing Association, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series held their annual Night of Champions at the Burlington Hotel & Conference Center in Burlington, Ontario last night.

The event marked the seventh Night of Champions for the PMRA, the third such night for the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the first night for the PBSS.

Along with presentations for the top five competitors in each of the three drag race series, rookie, achievement, and sportsmanship awards for all series were presented, along with the John Massingberd Memorial Award.

With over 300 in attendance, series announcer Larry Satchell presided as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.

Before the top five in each series were presented with their awards, there were several other categories which were announced.

Bill Mehlenbacher of Bill Mehlenbacher Photography presented the Pro Bike & Sled Series Sportsmanship Award to Harvey Silverthorn, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series Rookie of the Year Award to Billy White, and the Pro Modified Racing Association Sportsmanship Award to Jay Santos.

DragRaceCanada.com and Bruce Biegler presented the PBSS Achievement Award, given to Bill Anderson, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series Sportsmanship Award to Spencer Hyde, and the PMRA Achievement Award to Eric Latino.

Dave Erauw of Dave Erauw Photography was on hand to present the PBSS Rookie of the Year Award to Dave Vandereyken, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series Achievement Award to Jeff Moser, and the PMRA Rookie of the Year Award to Rob Atchison.

Top Dragster drivers Katie Ward and Sydnie Hyde presented the Official of the Year award to Davey Robertson, who is the Director of Competition and Official Starter for all three of the series.

One of the highlights of the evening was the announcement by David Lange of Ideal Supply and NAPA Auto Parts to continue as the title sponsor for the Quick 32 Sportsman Series for another two seasons.

Another highlight of the night was the presentation of the John Massingberd Memorial Award to Bob Slack and the Slack Family for their commitment and dedication to auto racing in Canada.

Receiving the award was Bob Slack, a Caledonia-based businessman who purchased Cayuga Speedway in the late 1960s and for the next 25 years presented the best in oval track shows to Canadians.

“I have known Bruce since he was a young man,” noted Slack, who was referring to Director of Operations Bruce Mehlenbacher, who worked with the Slacks at Cayuga.
“This is a tough sport,” he continued. “And he has been very successful with it. I want to thank you for this award, and wish you all well in the future.”

The top five in the Pro Bike & Sled Series, Presented by Wiseco Performance Products, were Champion Randy Hope, followed by Dan Cryderman, Bill Anderson, James Miller, and John Orfanidis.

Presented by NAPA Auto Parts and Ideal Supply, the top five in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series were Champion Phil Sampson, followed by Jamie Bridge, Jeff Moser, Darrin Grubb, and Billy White.

For the PMRA Marydel Homes Champions Awards presented by Magnum Auto Parts, Patio Passport, and Global Emissions Systems Inc, the top five were Champion Vito Montesano, followed by Bruce Boland, Eric Latino, Jeff Roth, and Mark Nielsen.

PMRA, Quick 32 Sportsman Series and PBSS Director of Operations Bruce Mehlenbacher thanked all the teams and the race venues. He also thanked the sponsors of the series, emphasizing everyone’s importance in the Series.

The 2012 schedule for the PMRA, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the PBSS has been posted, and the first event for all three series will be the Victoria Day Challenge May 18-20 on the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park.

“This has been a fantastic season,” noted team driver Phil Sampson. “We had started out going for a top five finish, but obviously we went all the way.”

Headed up by Phil and Bud Sampson, the team fields a Jerry Bickel Race Cars 2002 Chevy Cavalier, powered by a 572-cubic inch Reher-Morrison Racing Engines running racing fuel through a large 1200-cfm Holley. Behind the big engine is a Powerglide two-speed from the shops of Hutch’s Transmission.

The team ran a consist and steady season, qualifying in the upper half of the 16-car fields for most events, and posting times in the low seven-second range with speeds of 185-190 mph.

This year was Sampson’s second in Quick 32 Sportsman Series competition.

The season was highlighted with two event wins. The team started the year on a high note at Cayuga, winning the Top Sportsman side and then beating Top Dragster finalist Jamie Bridge of Napanee, Ontario in the event final. Sampson found himself paired off with finalist Jeff Moser of Bamberg, Ontario in event five at Grand Bend, and eliminating the Top Dragster driver to win his second event of the year. Sampson also went to the Top Sportsman final in the second event, losing to Darrin Grubb of Pine River, Ontario.

Crew chief is Bud Sampson, while others on the team include Dan, Jessica, Rob, and Scott. Sampson also wanted to that Dale, Brad, and the Coull family for their support this year.

Sponsors for the team include Rycor Countertops, Matco Tools, NAPA Auto Parts London – Oxford Street East and Rust Check of London. “I also have to thank Performance Unlimited in London, and Hutch’s Transmissions for their support this year,” Sampson noted.

“We came up with a new game plan for this year from the previous year, and it worked well,” Sampson said “This series is great, and the racers are a good group of guys.”

The Annual “Night of Champions” Championship Point Award Series Banquet for the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA), the Quick 32 Sportsman Series and the Pro Bike & Sled Series (PBSS) will be held at the Burlington Hotel & Conference Centre in Burlington, Ontario on Saturday, November 19, 2011.
