The long awaited Dream Theater book “Lifting Shadows” by Rich Wilson has finally arrived at my doorstep. Fans that pre-ordered the book before August 31st, 2007 had the option of having their name printed in the “Roll Of Honor” section near the end of the book.

My name is printed on page 350. :)

The packaging is very impressive. Both books (“Images” and “Words”) come stored in a red, textured, foil stamped, hard paper case. The books have high quality glossy jackets with printing on all sides, and the bonus CD is stored in a built-in sleeve on the inside cover of the “Images” volume.

I haven’t had a chance to read the entire book yet, but when I do I’ll update this article to reflect my opinion.

More to come…

B

I’m not a fan of Deep Purple so this show was a little hard for me to listen to. They’re a little before my time. It’s a decent sounding show though.

Packaging
A very detailed liner with 3 pages of text about this show and Deep Purple’s original show. There’s also an excerpt from the Bass player of Deep Purple and original mixer of the “Made in Japan” release, Roger Glover, who just so happened to mix this recording as well. Very informative! I wish all of the Ytsejam releases had this much info provided with them.

014 Falling Into Infinity Demos

Date
1996-1997
Location
USA
Media
Type
Demo
Rating
A

I really like the “Demos” series from Ytsejam. It’s very interesting to hear what our beloved songs sounded like when they were first conceived. In most cases the songs were better before they were torn apart by the producer(s). I am glad, however, that they removed the puking sounds from the original ending of Burning My Soul. Weird.

After listening to these older versions I found that Lines in the Sand is one of my favorite songs by DT… that is, before they added those horrid backing vocals to the studio mix. I also enjoy Hollow Years much more without the country sounding slide guitar.

The big draw to this bootleg has got to be the original raw version of Metropolis Pt 2. It’s surprising to hear how much of the original music made it into the final release and how much better Jordan is at composing music than Derek. This is truly the gem of this bootleg.

Packaging:
There’s so much information packed into the liner notes, you can really tell that Mike spent a lot of time working on this project. I, for one, really appreciate being able to read about each individual song in such detail.

Set List

CD 1

Where Are You Now?

Take Away My Pain

You Or Me

Anna Lee

Burning My Soul

The Way It Used To Be

013 New York City 3/4/93

Date
DAT
Rating
C

This show gets a C instead of an A because this is a DAT recording (which, in theory, should sound far better than a non-digital soundboard rip)of an already well known bootleg, yet contains no additional music or info about the show. I was at least expecting a description in the liner explaining the history of this bootleg and how this single show spawned the studio release of ACoS. But instead we get nothing but a few pictures… whoopidee doooo!

Packaging
Nothing special at all. Just a few pictures of the band from that era. No liner notes at all!!??!! That’s right, you heard me, NO LINER NOTES. I can’t believe that Mike didn’t including anything about this show. He’s stated in other interviews that this show was recorded for an eventual audio and video release. I would really like to know what happened to the video and why the whole project got shelved.

Needless to say, I’m confused as to why Mike even decided to release this show if he wasn’t going to explain the role it played in their career.
