The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Game Engin...

Posted by: Steve Farrelly

Probably the most sought after information regarding Bethesda's forthcoming The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is what changes to the game-engine they've made, especially since it was revealed they'd be using an entirely new engine and not the Gamebryo one used for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion or Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Thankfully Bethesda's Todd Howard was kind enough to speak to Game Informer in detail about the major changes to what makes their new world tick, all of which you can read in entirety by clicking here, but for those who just want the juicy bits, we've picked the feature apart for you.

"The big things for us were to draw a lot of stuff in the distance so we have a really sophisticated level of detail," he told GI. "More so than what we've had in the past for how things stream in and how detail gets added to them as they get closer to the camera.

"Because our worlds are so big all of the lighting has to be dynamic,” he adds. "That's something we had a little bit of in the past with shadowing, but not on everything. Now we have it on everything. It just makes the whole thing a lot more believable when you're there.”

The few screenshots that have leaked from scanned pages from Game Informer do show the game looking much more dynamic and detailed, and according to the feature on GI.com, they've revamped the Radiant AI for NPCs as well, making them much more intelligent.
You won't find townspeople loitering aimlessly in town squares anymore. Each denizen performs tasks that make sense in their environment. To impart the towns and cities with a greater sense of life, Bethesda has populated them with mills, farms, and mines that give the NPCs believable tasks to occupy their day. In the forest village we visited during the demo, most of the citizens were hard at work chopping wood, running logs through the mill, and carrying goods through the town.
"Your friend would let you eat the apple in his house,” Howard adds to the feature detail. "If you swing your weapon near an NPC, knock items off their dinner table, or try to steal something of value, they'll react with an appropriate level of hostility given their prior relationship to you."

And finally, some excellent news regarding the real-time pause that takes place when in any meaningful conversation with NPCs:
The increased animation fidelity and diversity has enabled Bethesda to ditch the awkward dialogue camera perspective that paused the game and presented you with an extreme closeup of the person with whom you were speaking. Now camera stays in the same perspective used during combat and exploration, and players are free to look around while engaging in conversation. Rather than drop their activities to give you their undivided attention, the NPCs continue to go about their business while in discussion. For instance, a barkeep may continue to clean cups while talking, and even move from behind the counter to a seat. A mill worker chopping wood may engage in conversation without turning away from his duties, only occasionally glancing toward you during the exchange.
It's a pretty decent read, and has me amped for the game much more - especially if they've thoroughly improved the third-person camera, movement and animation system. Obviously they have months of hype to go through before the game's November release date, so stay tuned for more as it becomes available.

Infinity Ward Employing New Security i...

Posted by: Steve Farrelly

The recent news of a PS3 hack that enables users to manipulate their console's data, including Trophies and even Player Stats has urged the oft reclusive and quiet Infinity Ward to reveal they'll be employing new security measures with their future releases, and won't be relying on platform security.

"Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they're played on," said Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward's Community mnager. "Therefore; updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform. Regretfully, Call of Duty games are receiving the bulk of the hackers’ attention, due to its high player counts and popularity. However, the number of legitimate players severely outweighs the bad apples."

Whether this means we'll see DRM employed in the next Modern Warfare or not remains to be seen, but they're taking it all pretty seriously.

"In the future we plan to adjust our approach to not rely solely on platform security and reduce the ability for this to happen in our games, as has already been displayed by the work Treyarch has done on Call of Duty: Black Ops to prevent similar measures,” Bowling said.

Posted by: Dan

Epic Games have released yet more new videos for the upcoming Bulletstorm, accompanying an announcement from publisher EA that a playable demo of the game will be made available in Australia and New Zealand from January 26th 2011 on XBLA and PSN -- pitched as a perfect way to spend your Australia Day.
The Bulletstorm demo introduces a slice of Echo mode in which players traverse a collapsed building on the deadly paradise planet Stygia as ex-Dead Echo leader Grayson Hunt. Players will utilize the “Skillshot” system in Bulletstorm as they crush enemies in increasingly creative ways to rack up points using an arsenal of powerful weapons, from a futuristic assault rifle called the Peace Maker Carbine, to the Flail Gun, which fires two grenades linked by a chain, and the Screamer, a powerful revolver that turns enemies into human fireworks.
Depressingly however, it looks as though PC players will once again miss out on the demo action, despite Epic Games still supposedly being a prominent member of the PC Gaming Alliance.

With that gripe acknowledged, Bulletstorm is still due to launch on all three platforms on February 24th 2011 and you can find out more info about the Echo and Anarchy modes in this new developer diary video and check out yet another creative way to dispose of opponents in this new Bullet Points trailer.

Is There Anything Good About Men?

Posted by: Hogfather

This is a really good read IMO from the Psychology dept at Florida State. Its a look at the biological imperatives behind the cultural and social constructs that created the 'man's world' that we live in and why the system developed this way. Contrary to popular belief it probably wasn't a global patrimonial conspiracy.

The speech was written and presented by Roy F. Baumeister in 2007, can't find a vid of it :(

From the conclusion:

What seems to have worked best for cultures is to play off the men against each other, competing for respect and other rewards that end up distributed very unequally. Men have to prove themselves by producing things the society values. They have to prevail over rivals and enemies in cultural competitions, which is probably why they aren’t as lovable as women.

The essence of how culture uses men depends on a basic social insecurity. This insecurity is in fact social, existential, and biological. Built into the male role is the danger of not being good enough to be accepted and respected and even the danger of not being able to do well enough to create offspring.

The basic social insecurity of manhood is stressful for the men, and it is hardly surprising that so many men crack up or do evil or heroic things or die younger than women. But that insecurity is useful and productive for the culture, the system.

Again, I’m not saying it’s right, or fair, or proper. But it has worked. The cultures that have succeeded have used this formula, and that is one reason that they have succeeded instead of their rivals.

http://www.psy.fsu.edu/~baumeistertice/goodaboutmen.htm

Thoughts?

Fluoride in water reduced in America

Posted by: FaceMan

This Topic has been debated before on QGL but recently theres been an interesting twist in America.

About 2 out of 5 adolescents have tooth streaking or spottiness because of too much fluoride, a surprising government study found recently. In some extreme cases, teeth can even be pitted by the mineral — though many cases are so mild only dentists notice it.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is announcing a proposal to change the recommended fluoride level to 0.7 milligrams per liter of water. And the Environmental Protection Agency will review whether the maximum cutoff of 4 milligrams per liter is too high.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40962808/ns/health-kids_and_parenting/

AFAIK the dose for Brisbanes water is 1.5 mg per litre.
Should we be lowering the dose here too ?
Maybe those Fluoride "Looneys" were right when they complained ?

We answer all of these questions and more in our review, which talks more about the experience as a whole and what you can expect to get out of a CoD: Black Ops purchase from today onward.
Cars - which car is easiest for DIY service

Posted by: StopShootingMe

I know this is a gamers forum, but some of the users here have surprising areas of expertise, so I figured I'd ask this:

Which car sold today or very recently is built so as to allow the end user to service the engine or effect repairs easily? I ask this because today my family performed some basic engine repairs on a 1985 Volvo. Changed the spark plugs, checked the leads, spotted a crack in the exhaust manifold and so on. You could see how an engine works by looking at it, following the electrical and fuel systems component by component. It occurs to me that all cars I've seen manufactured in recent years have sealed-off engines with just a few colour coded spots that you can actually touch (wiper fluid reservoir and the like).

So - do any models made today give you a realistic option of doing any of your own maintenance, or are cars the same as most modern electronic appliances, covered in anti tamper nuts and bolts and made as difficult as possible for you to explore?

As a bonus question, are any cars made to allow dints and exterior damage to be cheaply repaired? I have heard that the Smart cars were designed so that damaged panel sections could be easily popped off and replaced. If true then that's pretty clever given their objective of being a pure inner city car.

Where to get my iPhone fixed?

Posted by: sLiNky

For the last month or so, my iphone (32gig 3gs) has been struggling to get reception indoors.

Called up optus (spoke fantastic english :D) , sent the setting out to my phone, but all is well there and then said to go to the shop to get a new sim card, that worked for a little while and now my phone can't get reception at all, inside and out.

I have tried backup -> restore. Again works for a little bit longer then no service at all.

What are my options to get it fixed? there is a crack in the screen so not covered by warranty. Optus can send it away to be fixed at my expense, or I hear the apple shop do straight swaps for $250? I still have a few months left on my contract ($800 payout).

Or I hear that there are there are crazy asains in the city that replace the parts needed? is E&E still next to myer centre and do they do it?

I'm pretty nifty with electronics and could probably do the screen myself, so should I fix the screen myself then send it away with optus? or will they know it has been changed??

Thanks for the advice :)

Stuxnet - Worm virus attacking high profile targets

Posted by: gamer

Click this for more info.

Q: How could the attackers get a trojan like this into a secure facility?
A: For example, by breaking into a home of an employee, finding his USB sticks and infecting it. Then wait for the employee to take the sticks to work and infect his work computer. The infection will spread further inside the secure facility via USB sticks, eventually hitting the target. As a side effect, it will continue spread elsewhere also. This is why Stuxnet has spread worldwide.

Q: Anything else it could do, in theory?
A: Siemens announced last year that Simatic can now also control alarm systems, access controls and doors. In theory, this could be used to gain access to top secret locations. Think Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible.

It's interesting to see a worm like this used as an attack vector on a secure facility (like a refinery).

My best mate works at Shell in Sydney. He has told me what lengths they goto to ensure that NO system in the place has a physical or wireless connection to the outside world.

Almost all systems use serial connectivity and there is no internet lines to the facility. Most systems have a triple redundant controller (such as a valve or sensor) and those are controlled by serial at the master control room deep under the facility. If the entire facility was to blow up, it would level about 50-100km in all directions however those people in the bunker underground would be perfectly safe and have enough provisions to last two weeks.

It's therefore interesting to see that a virus that is aware of these control system software is trying to get into these facilities via USB stick.

That's one hell of a targeted attack. In theory if a attacker could get it onto the home computers of some of the employees, it might work. Though why they wouldn't have USB locked down, is a bigger question.

Posted by: crazymorton

hi all,
well i took the plunge as an experiment on an old Dell Inspiron 6400 that was getting pretty slow and becoming a pain. so i nuked the HDD and did a total clean install of the Netbook edition. we only use this laptop now on our home wifi connection to surf while watching TV and to check out "who is that actor?" etc. so it's not overly stressed performance wise.
so far so good, i like it. quick start up and easy connection to wifi. my only problem is of course getting used to how to navigate around to things that i know where they are on Windows but have different names here.
so 2 things to start with please.
1. where do i find something like the windows device manager?
2. how do i turn off the password requirement for start up and when back from hibernation.
there's only my wife and i so we don't need this.

that's all for now but stay tuned as we explore this OS more!

thanks
