I’ve been in hibernation for the past few months and my focus has been far from the short domain marketplace hence the lack of posts here at Quad Letter Domains. Just a quick post to say that I am still alive and well, just concentrating on some other projects that I have been trying to get finished for some time now but there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day.

Just a quick note to say that I stumbled on Reece’s new site today , LLLL.com and noticed that he has published his first post on the new blog. I hope seeing Reece back in action will motivate me to resurrect Quad Letter Domains and continue writing. Oh and just because I haven’t been blogging here for a while doesn’t mean I haven’t been renewing my four letter domains… In fact I have renewed all of them and will continue to do so for as long as I can.

Has the domain niche that everyone thought was untouchable finally hit its peak? Over the past few weeks we have started to see a steady decline in the bottom end prices of LLL.com domains. 3Character.com still reports that the LLL.com market is increasing stating that the current observed minimum wholesale value is up $50 this month to $7650.

This is pretty far from the truth considering the recent sales data taken from multiple venues. Here are some recent LLL.com sales:

2008-06-20 - RYY.com - $7,124
2008-06-23 - XKD.com - $7,100
2008-06-26 - HMQ.com - $7,300
2008-06-26 - BIY.com - $7,400
2008-07-01 - QVK.com - $6,730
2008-07-02 - FQV.com - $6,305

All of these recent sales are below the current ‘observed minimum wholesale’ value posted on 3Character.com on the 1st July 2008. It seems the site isn’t all that accurate after all. You could argue that some of these aren’t of the highest quality but this is incidental considering the minimum wholesale figure doesn’t discriminate and covers all LLL.com domains.

Will this recent decrease in LLL.com domain value incite panic selling. There seems to have been an increase in LLL.com domains on the market recently and this will only decrease their value further. Greater supply is soon followed by decreased demand. Some domain investors think that this is the beginning of a LLL.com price crash and believe prices could fall below $4000 in the coming months. Has the mighty giant, the ’safest’ investment, the domain niche offering ultimate liquidity, finally hit it’s peak?

How this will affect four letter domain sales I do not know but just recently we have seen a marginal increase in LLLL.com sales figures. I believe this is because the peoples gaze has turned to the three letter domain market. Confidence is once again beginning to grow in quad letter domains because the initial scare of falling prices has passed and people have once again begun to reinvestin this niche. Who knows if this will continue as three letter domain sales inevitably affect their four letter domain offspring. They are intertwinedbut many domainers believe the huge gap between the two markets must close sooner or later. What they didn’t believe is that its LLL.com prices decreasing that is closing the gap rather than LLLL.com prices dramatically increasing. What do you think?

It seems my lack of articles throughout March and April really damaged traffic ratings as my Alexa rank plummeted from 138,000 to nearly 700,000 last month. I’m pleased to say its now back on track and rising once again!

Aside from the sale of Jaho.com that was finalised last week there has been little significant quad letter domain activity at the main arenas according to DNJournal’s mid-late June sales report. In fact there have been just eight reported LLLL.com sales over $2k and a mere smattering of global contender transactions.

Short domains in general had little impact on the chart but it is clear from the top four that pronounceable quad letter domains once again take centre stage:

JAHO.com - $18,000
GUSA.com - $3,269
ZUPP.com - $2,050
UPAJ.com - $3,000
CGCS.com - $3,000
KVAS.com - $2,888
KMLZ.com - $2,000
SCMC.com - $2,501

What’s great is seeing diversity and a mixture of CVCV, VCVC, quad premium and ’less desirable’ names sold at good solid prices even though they are limited in number.

Heading up the global contenders chart was the fantastic sale of JIEE.org. Healthily past the 5k mark this domain has surely found its way into the hands of an end user as there are plenty of acronyms already in use for this combination of letters.

The full list of global contender sales is as follows:

JIEE.org - $5,300
ARES.net - $4,300
PRIS.net - $1,750
VUKA.net - $1,151
NHFS.net - $1,000

And to wrap up this months, all be it short report, was just one ccTLD. PIES.ca just made it into the chart and sold for $1,032.

I’ve been waiting for a sale like this for a while now. The sale of a quad letter domain for a 5 figure sum that has nothing to offer other than itself. Take a look at the stats, it has no Page Rank, isn’t DMOZ listed, has an Alexa rank of over eight million, and after checking archive.org has never hosted a developed website other than countless holding pages offering the domain for sale.

This sale doesn’t obey the rules of the ’system’. It is a pronounceable CVCV.com, but is just a triple premium which should sell in the region of $4k. This name sold at four times that amount and the only reason for this is because it found an end user.

Its not a dictionary generic, its not a quad premium, its not got masses of traffic or good webmaster statistics to back it plus the term ‘jaho’ only returns 142K search results. It has been bought because an end user wanted it, nothing more, nothing less. In fact the only significant references I can find to the term ‘jaho’ are a classical singer ’Ermonela Jaho‘ and two websites for the company that produces ‘Jaho Coffee & Tea‘. I’m stumped as to what it will be used for. Any ideas?

I was sifting through some of my drafts and almost deleted this article which I’ve been meaning to complete for a while now. I decided some of the points to be made back in April are still relevant now. After I wrote ‘Still ‘biting’ for bargains!‘ I thought it would be good to look at the market from a different view point. The question that springs to my mind when so many people are finding so many bargains at so many market venues is, ‘why are there so many?’

Well, put quite simply, bargains indicate that a market is in decline because people are selling cheap in an attempt to cut their loses. ‘We already know this’ I hear you cry, but what amazes me is that so many people still believe they are getting a bargain even after the a numerous discussions that have taken place regarding market correction, recession and depreciation.

They aren’t bargains, not in the current market. Prices have fallen dramatically over the past couple of months and this domain niche is so fluid it is ctitical you remain up to date. In any market you should strive to stay current and be self educated. Analyse your niche and understand it. A bargain yesterday could well be an overpriced item today.

The point I’m making is not to discourage anyone from participating in the 4 letter domain market but to understand that sometimes bargains aren’t always a good thing, and more often than not bargains aren’t bargains at all. Do your research and plan your purchases carefully plus look beyond the immediate future and realise the potential that this market has to evolve in later years because that is when we can look back and truly say we grabbed a bargain.
