What is SSL?

SSL (secure socket layer) encrypts the communication between website and the visitor’s browser. When a website visitor enters details such as name, email address, username, password, or credit card number, SSL prevents them from being read by nefarious third parties who may intercept them.

You can identify a website using https in two ways:
— the address will begin with https, not http.
— there will be a green lock in the address bar, to the left of the address.... [...read more...]

Has Chrome begun always being on top in Windows? Here’s how to fix that when it happens. It’s so simple.

Press the ALT, SPACE, and C keys together.

The Chrome window will close.

Open it back up. (You can press CTRL, SHIFT and T together to make that happen if you like.)

Voila! No more Chrome on top.

You can now open, say, a Word document or another app and it will no longer be in back of your Chrome window.... [...read more...]

Here’s a case history — and the answer.

The Yoast SEO plugin offers an easy and effective way to optimize WordPress posts and pages for the search engines. Here’s how.

First things first. What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization sounds complex. But it’s not, really. Search engines want to include pages in their search which are going to be helpful to people looking for information.

SEO is the process of creating web pages which are well-organized and which convey information clearly and in a manner that people will find useful.... [...read more...]

A friend recently emailed me. He’d read a book that instructed him to include the Google Analytics tracking code into his “header.php” file. That’s the right way for some themes. But he was using a Genesis child theme, and no header.php file exists. He had a good question: how do you include Google Analytics tracking in a Genesis theme?

Thankfully, there are two simple ways to do it. Method 1 is just for WordPress sites which use a Genesis (StudioPress) theme; Method 2 will work for any WordPress website.... [...read more...]

Here’s an example of one such mistake and how I cleared it up in just a minute or two.

Maybe you’re like me and prefer to use WordPress’ text (HTML) editor rather than the visual editor. But the problem is that the HTML editor text is small and — let’s face it — kind of ugly.

There are all sorts of solutions out there; some involve editing (or adding) a stylesheet just for the text editor.

But there’s a simpler way. Just add a few lines of text to your theme’s functions.php file.

The example above shows only the code to change the font family, but you can add the font size CSS as well.... [...read more...]
