Frontline Workers

We feel very privileged to be involved in a fantastic incentive which has been created to help support frontline workers. It is incredibly important that those working in the frontline have limited contact with their potentially contaminated clothing when changing regularly. For this reason, an incredible solution has been designed where the clothes are placed inside a pillowcase that has been specially adapted to tie up from the top, ready to go straight into a washing machine. The clothes are washed inside of the pillowcase, enabling limited contact with the clothes by the individual washing them. The initiative has been prompted by the “For The Love of Scrubs” project.

Additionally, we will also be supplying linen to the project which will be used for the creation of scrubs, surgical gowns and headbands. If you have any pillowcases which you would like to donate, please send them to us. We will give them to the seamstresses who are working incredibly hard on this project.

Rinse Immediately

Before you begin actually washing your clothing, remove any dry dirt, such as leaves or grass. Then rinse everything, this should reduce the chances of any stains settling in and will help remove as much dirt quickly. A great way to achieve this for anything particularly dirty, hang everything on a washing line and use a hosepipe to hose it all down.

Long Soak

Depending on the type of stain, soak everything in warm water and detergent for approx. an hour. However, to remove blood stains, use cold water and detergent or even washing up liquid to gently rub away the stains. Grass stains can sometimes require a little more attention, so turn the clothing inside out and using your prefer stain removal detergent, rub the soiled area until the stain has sufficiently disappeared. 

Wash As Per Instruction 

Wring out any water or detergent and then wash your kit as per the washing instructions as some items such as gloves may require a more delicate setting than everything else.

Who Monitors Care Homes & Their Processes?

The Care Quality Commission is an independent body which was established by the Health and Social Care Act 2008. The independent body monitors regulations for care, including best practices when it comes to laundry.

The Department of Health stipulates the process by which laundry must be disinfected in care homes, under the HTM (Health Technical Memorandum) 01-04. The two accepted methods are as follows:

Thermal Disinfection

In order to achieve successful sanitization, the water temperature must be carefully regulated, according to the criteria for thermal disinfection in washing procedures. One approach, as per these rules, is to have the water in the washing cycle heated to 65ºC and kept there for a minimum of eighteen minutes. This period guarantees that the heat will have enough time to permeate the fabric and destroy any bacteria. As an alternative, a temperature of 71ºC can be utilised; however, this will require an exposure period of at least 11 minutes, which will include the time needed to completely mix the water. Because of its adaptability, the washing process may be tailored to match particular hygiene needs and equipment capabilities, ensuring that microbiological presence is effectively reduced and health standards are met.

Chemical Disinfection

It is important to make sure that the chemical disinfection method you choose is just as effective as thermal disinfection. This is especially crucial in medical environments where stopping the spread of dangerous microorganisms like C. difficile and MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is the main objective. Because of the microorganisms’ well-known resistance and the serious diseases they can induce, selecting a strong and trustworthy disinfection technique is crucial. Healthcare providers may maintain a high degree of hygiene and greatly lower the risk of infection transmission within their facilities by comparing the effectiveness of chemical disinfectants with thermal treatments, which typically use heat to kill microorganisms.

Washing Temperature

Washing your clothes at the wrong temperature can cause your clothes to shrink. The temperature you should wash your garments at will typically be presented by a bucket filled with water in the label of your clothes. Where the bucket displays a number, it means your clothes are safe to be washed at that temperature. If the bucket is on its own with no other line underneath it, it is stating that the garment is machine washable. Where a bucket icon is displayed with one line underneath, this is stating that the clothes need to be put on a synthetics cycle. Should two lines be placed under the bucket symbol, a gentle or wool wash cycle is required.

Can I Bleach My White Clothes?

If you want to use bleach to bring back your vibrant whites, be sure to look at your laundry care label to see if the fabric is ok to be used with bleach.

Whether or not you can use bleach will be shown by a triangle. Where a triangle is shown with a cross through it, you must not use bleach at any stage. Should a triangle be shown with two diagonal lines through it, only non-chlorine bleach should be used. A triangle with no lines through it shows that bleach can be used safely on the garment.
