As if that’s not enough, his very next post says: “If there was ever a moment to follow your passion and do work that matters, this is it. You can’t say, ‘but I need to make a fortune instead,’ because that’s not happening right now. So you might as well join the people who can say, ‘I love doing this.’ ”

James makes fabulous coffee. He brings in the beans, roasts them, cures the roast, grinds the roasted beans, and extracts the sacred juices.

People know that he makes the best coffee you can get.

Not many know why, or how.

Not many people understand the difference between the brew they get from the Lyttelton Coffee Company and one from Anyoldcafe. They still have their coffee here because they love the food, or the staff, or the environment.

Meanwhile in the background James is quietly fizzing over the arrival of some single source Cuban beans that will raise the coffee experience to another level.

The Coffee Hounds will raise one eyebrow and nod knowingly. The rest will possibly never know. James will be happy in the knowledge that he has once again raised the bar for himself.

Photographers do the same with their achievements. They make personal improvements and reach goals that often go unnoticed.

That is the burden we bear. The things we do that lift us above the average often go by unseen, but they do make us feel better about what we do.

Cheers
Johannes

Danny and I just had a great chat with Pete, who runs Order Processing at the Lab. According to Pete, this year OP was able to clear the “Christmas Rush” almost completely in a single day. That’s amazing.

It means the automation we put in place in Photojunction this year (fondly known as PJ Nana) definitely works.

Pete really wanted to talk about the handful of orders where his team had to go back and sort out problems with their clients (things like missing files or flattened JPG layouts received for full colour service).

As a result we came up with a few ways to make Nana even better, but most of the problems would have been avoided simply by:

1. Using the latest version of Photojunction.

2. Using PJ’s Export Layouts window to interface with your exported PSD files.

3. Using the automated Send Order function to upload your orders and files.

Danny was no sooner off the call than he was in to bother the developers! With a cool message – we’ve done well but here’s how we can make it even better.

I like that.

Cheers, Ian

PS I think Danny prefers “PJ On Rails” to PJ Nana. To each his own metaphor.

If you specify Full Colour Service printing, we colour correct your images. The old fashioned way, one at a time.

We don’t run software shortcuts or bulk edit your images. Every single image (or layer) gets personal attention from our specialist colour correctors.

It’s their job to get your images looking their best and ready for printing and album assembly. Our colour correction policy is to achieve consistency across the images in your album and to optimise natural skin-tones … and if we spot any problems, to let you know.

Once we’re done your images go straight to the lab for printing. No delays, no dramas.

This can save you real time.

Let’s say you average around 80 images per albums. Even if you only spend 3 minutes colour correcting and art-working each of those images, you’re looking at half a day saved.

Full Colour Service costs more than Print-Ready of course – but you’re getting a lot more too. Plus you have an extra pair of expert eyes looking over your work … which can (and often does) head off expensive problems before they happen.

Cheers, Nigel

PS We don’t correct layouts but layers – the best service available.

That is the big question.

Andy Warhol said, “It is art as long as it’s signed.”

John Cage said, “It is anything you can get away with.”

Why is it so important (to some) to be seen/considered as an artist?

Are we as photographers overselling what we do when we call it art?

Are we selling our vision as artists or our ability to use a filter or two to create art for the masses?

Doc Ross once said that, ”If it comes with a statement then it is art … otherwise it is just decoration.”

So Art has a signature, intent, and a certain freedom.

Most importantly, ‘Who cares?’

Maybe we care because it adds value to what we do. This value is something that cannot be measured in inches or centimeters, but is quoted in dollars and cents.

Part of the ‘Art story’ is respect for the work … and part of showing respect is how you present it.

Enough said!

Johannes

I had been back in New Zealand for more than a week and aware that I hadn’t written anything much.

To be honest I hadn’t had the time.

Not the ‘normal’ time that is measured in hours and minutes, but the emotional time that is measured in heart beats.

Emotional time is where the head space comes from … the place where stories are formed, the place where imagination catches fire, and the place where ideas become words.

I hadn’t had the emotional time because traveling is exhausting.

I arrived back and it took me a week to catch up on sleep, work was piled up, new demands from clients, editors and best friends surrounded me … and there was almost three weeks of family time I needed to reclaim.

So I went away again … but this time a real holiday. A real holiday to catch up on that emotional time. …. with family and friends.

Too often we allow ourselves to be robbed of our emotional time and we end up ‘coping’. I am guiltiest of that.

I know that the terminally obsessed will query where I am coming from, but it is true, so every now and them we need a pause from our extremes of activity to let our hearts and spirits catch up.

Cheers and hugs, Johannes

A while ago I suggested “keeping it simple” was a great goal … but not simple to achieve in a complicated job like photography.

But I did suggest you could do it with Queensberry.

Take our Design Service.

There are benefits to doing your own album design, so what I’m about to say isn’t going to work for everyone. But if you’re snowed under or uncomfortable with album design it’s worth serious thought.

Say on average you spend 3-4 hours on each album design … and many people do spend a lot more.

Send them to Queensberry and you’ve just freed up at least a day.

You can bet that at this time of year, with our pre-Christmas deadline upon us, we’re doing a lot more design orders than normal!

But at any time of year what could you do with the time you’ve saved? Well, you could be shooting pictures and selling them, which is where the gold is … or just doing something you enjoy!

And sending us a design order is such a simple process. Here’s the video explaining how to do it . It’s 8 minutes long, and it probably takes longer to explain than to do.

Cheers, Nigel

PS Our team design albums all day every day, so they’re good. They get to know your style, your likes and dislikes, but their main watchword, like mine, is simplicity … which really means classic, timeless. They also know Photojunction and our albums better than anyone else and will deliver your design in a timely fashion. (Usually 2-3 days after receiving your order (however they’ll take a little longer during the busy season).)

Well for a lot of people, the first impression they’ll have of your business is your online Yellow Pages listing, and we spotted an interesting way some of our clients are making the most of theirs…

Yellow Pages gives you the option to add search terms to your listing, to help describe what products or services you offer.

What we noticed was that some of our clients were adding terms like ‘Queensberry’ or ‘Queensberry Albums’ to their listing.

It’s a simple idea but a powerful one too. Aligning yourself with a well known or reputable brand is a great way to build credibility, authenticity and trust, and promote your own brand image.

HTH

Cheers, Nigel
