"The 2010 Census will be the first to report counts of both same-sex partners and same-sex spouses," explains Adrienne Critcher of PACE, Louisiana's LGBT political outreach group that's working with U.S. Census Bureau. "The person filling out the form (Person 1) is asked to identify how all other individuals in the household are related to him or her. Census data are based on how individuals self identify and how couples think of themselves. Same-sex couples who are married, or consider themselves to be spouses, can identify one other adult as a 'husband or wife.' Other same-sex couples may instead decide to use the term 'unmarried partner.' In general, people who identify as unmarried partners are in a close personal relationship but are not married or do not think of themselves as spouses. Census data are based on how individuals self identify. This includes same-sex couples who live somewhere their relationship is not recognized." And jesus, please stop counting your two cats as your dependent children, because that is not funny.

Having split from Cleve Jones and the National Equality March's umbrella group Equality Across America last year, Robin McGehee and Kip Williams haven't been sitting on their hands. In between meeting with moneyed A-gays, they've launched their own project, Get Equal, which is already hawking its wares. It has a mission statement you've read a thousand times before from activist groups: "to create a movement of everyday people—lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and straight—who are dedicated to bringing about full legal and social equality." That's great! Even greater is this promo video from Will Phillips, the 10-year-old Arkansas school boy who refused to say the pledge of allegiance.

Okay, so it's sort of nice that the Salvation Army, a non-profit that practices discrimination against queers, gives its employees lavish multimillion dollar homes to live in because it pays them absolute crap wages. But reading about how folks like Henry Graciani, who runs one of Sal's alcoholic treatment clinics, and his wife, also a Sal's staffer, take home just $25,000 a year in salary but live in a "$1.3-million Santa Monica home" makes us wonder: The Salvation Army owns $1.3 million homes?

Yesterday J.D. Hayworth, the Republican former Arizona congressman who left office in 2007, wants to unseat Sen. John McCain from the U.S. Senate in November by offering up a GOP primary challenge. And how might Mr. Hayworth go about doing that? By trumping even McCain's curmudgeon views on homosexuality with concluding Massachusetts' legalization of gay marriage will lead to man-horse weddings.

On Saturday night in New York City, GLAAD handed out trophies to famous persons making gay rights a personal cause célèbre (Cynthia Nixon, Joy Behar) and folks like Sigourney Weaver, because she was not nominated for her role in Avatar (oh, and because of her work in Prayers for Bobby, which is excellent). Both Rep. Barney Frank and Tammy Baldwin, two-thirds of the House's gay contingent, say they will be getting the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in front of lawmakers this month for an actual, real-life, not-pretend vote. Both legislators even say House Speaker Nancy Pelosi promised them the bill, after it moves through the House Education and Labor Committee, would head quickly to the floor for a full vote.

Norrie, born in Scotland and who only goes by her first name, has neither a "M" or "F" on her public records. The certificate from New South Wales' Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Australia reads "sex not specified." Categorized as "male" at birth, she underwent hormone therapy and surgery in her twenties to become a woman, but has since stopped taking hormones, "preferring to live as neither male nor female." Which leads to one practice matter: Which article of speech — "he" or "she" — to use to refer to Norrie. Neither, zie says.

Sgt. Jene Newsome is a nine-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. There, she worked as an aircraft armament system craftswoman. That is until police entered her home in Rapid City, S.D., to find her wife Cheryl Hutson, wanted on theft charges in Alaska. And when Newsome refused to cooperate with locating Hutson — by rushing home when the police reached her at the Air Force base — the police alerted her officers that they found an Iowa marriage license, issued in October, identifying the pair as wife and wife. Indeed, Newsome was honorably discharged under Don't Ask Don't Tell. Except, uh, she didn't tell anyone.

With the ACLU planning to file suit against Itawamba Agricultural High School for canceling its senior prom instead of letting 18-year-old senior Constance McMillen take her girlfriend, even the national media has been all over the "Should gays dates be banned from prom?" fiasco. McMillen even scored herself a Today show appearance, and if she plays her cards right, she'll get a four-page spread to model prom gowns in Seventeen. But aren't critics of McMillen — namely, her high school administrators — forgetting that girls go to prom with other girls all the time?

The South By Southwest festival has hit Texas and we're sending two crazy Mexicans (Queerty contributor Daniel Villarreal and his brother Socrates) to cover it. They'll be in Austin following films, having discussions with directors, mingling with musicians, and plundering promotional parties all in a quest for the queerest of SXSW. And with hundreds of events going on all week, they've started by finding the "queerest" of SXSW film (and by "queer", we mean any film that deals with gender identity, sexuality, counter-cultural politics, oppression and, of course, hot same-sex lovin'). This year, that includes films about hairy gay men, Viagra, wife-swapping, free-love, street art, rock-and-roll, and robot love. Let's engage.
