THE “ODUSSY”: For all the epic set-pieces & larger-than-life characters in Christopher Nolan’s sweeping The Odyssey, all the gays can think about is that brief flash of a man’s bar bum. Well, guess what? We found him! Meet the actor behind the blockbuster’s “caked up deer,” Michal Rachowiecki. [Queerty]

ROAD TRIP!: The doctor has left the building! The Pitt‘s Shabana Azeez is hitting the road for Lynn Q. Yu’s indie queer romance Unrequited, about a young woman who learns her best friend/one-time lover is about to leave the U.S. for India, so she decides to taker her on a tour of California to convince her otherwise. The Final Hump

Move over Big Love, these sister-wives are doing it for themselves! This month, OUTtv quietly dropped a hilarious queer comedy series that’s destined to be your next obsession. From creators Brenna Jordan & John Mark (Off Shoot), Sisters is the story of three sister-wives—Agatha (Jordan), Elizabeth (Roz Hernandez), and Rebekeh (Star Amerasu)—living in a devout polygamist community who suddenly must confront the realities of the world when their elderly husband Harold falls ill. 1. Dancer From the Dance by Andrew Holleran

Andrew Holleran’s novel Dancer From the Dance, available in paperback for $13.30 on Amazon, should be required reading for any gay man about to board the ferry to Fire Island Pines. I recently re-read the 1978 book, which The Atlantic dubbed one of its Great American Novels, for a club and was once again astonished by its breathtaking prose and how relevant this story about hopeless romanticism, looking for love, settling for sex and finding your crew under the disco ball still feels.

Oh, Malone and Sutherland, you would’ve loved Andrew Ahn’s 2022 film Fire Island, and, of course, Grindr.

2. Leather daddy-approved body wash

LeatherDaddy Skin Co. founder Chris Wright-Garcia started his business with a simple idea: “Skincare should feel good—and a little sexy.”

Based on their expansive collection (available at LGBTQ Outpost) and thousands of satisfied Instagram followers, I’d say mission accomplished.

My personal faves are the LeatherDaddy Body Wash, infused with their signature leather, scotch and vanilla scent, as well as the moisturizing LeatherDaddy Body Lotion. Both items start at $15.

3. Paddywax Candles

If you’re a candle gay like me, you’ve probably amassed so many wax-filled containers that you need to start doing layoffs. Thankfully, that’s not a problem with Paddywax Candles, whose thoughtful and intentionally crafted offerings are manufactured to have a long-lasting second life after they’re done burning.

4. I Want Your Sex

Gregg Araki’s new film is as zany, colorful and hilarious as you’d expect. Olivia Wilde is captivating, Cooper Hoffman is adorable, Charli XCX is spot-on and there’s a deceptively realistic coming-of-age story underneath all the chains, whips and maid costumes.

5. Troye Sivan’s imminent return

IDK what Troye Sivan (and his naughty lil’ finsta) are up to, but if the music is anything like 2023’s Something to Give Each Other, we should be preparing for a full-on, five-star, gay-pop emergency.

6. Gay Odyssey merch

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey might be making box-office history, but the epic adaptation was a little light on the historically accurate ancient Grecian homosexual love-making for my tastes.

Needless to say, I wasn’t expecting anything when I searched for “gay Odyssey merch” on Etsy, so I was delighted to find this Mean Girls-inspired tee, available in long or short-sleeve and currently on sale for $21.73. It’s not Odysseus and his men keeping each other warm during those long nights in the Trojan Horse, but we’ll take what we can get.

7. Hormona Lisa’s husband’s work potluck

I love that there’s a social media account reporting on what Drag Race alum Hormona Lisa cooked for her husband’s first-ever work potluck like it’s the Royal Wedding. For those wondering, it was crockpot funeral meatballs, pigs in a blanket, Rotel dip, mini steak quesadillas, and cheesecake bars. I’m sure there was nary a crumb leftover!

8. Slinging sausages in the backyard

I’m sorry, but you can’t create a yard activity called Sling It: The Medieval Sausage Slinging Game (available for $119 on Uncommon Goods) and expect me to not make a gay joke… or purchase it immediately. This 2-4 player game involves lobbing sausage-shaped bean bags at a target with the goal of sliding into scoring slots and being crowned the Royal Sausage-Slinge (which was also my nickname in college).

Honestly, corn hole is shaking.

9. “Hell’s Belles” by Zolita

Zolita channels fan favorite docs, The Hunting Wives and a steaming hot dose of WLW chaos in her new music video for “Hell’s Belles,” which she wrote, directed and stars in. I can’t get this boot-stomping, finger-licking, sticky tune out of my head. I’d watch a 10-part series!

Thankfully, there’s more to come with her new album dropping August 28.

10. The Staples baddie

Staples will never find a better ambassador than Kaeden Rowland, a.k.a. the viral Staples Baddie. This trans content creator is constantly posting day-in-the-life videos of her job, in which she crafts coasters, prints the craziest travel mugs, explains the store’s expansive services and never misses an opportunity to show off a good manicure to her nearly 600,000 TikTok followers.

The best part is the office retailer is fully aware of her posts, and supports it! Miss FedEx Store could never.

Welcome back to our queer film retrospective, “  A Gay Old Time.” In this week’s column, to celebrate its 60th anniversary, let’s revisit 1966’s Batman: The Movie, which began a cinematic legacy of camp & queerness in superhero movies.

This past week marked the 60th anniversary of Batman: The Movie, the Caped Crusader’s first-ever big screen adventure. And with Spider-Man: Brand New Day bringing another super-powered saga to the multiplexes this weekend, we thought it was the perfect time to revisit one of the earliest cinematic depictions of superheroes; one that left its stamp in pop culture for decades—and resonated particularly with our community because of its glorious sense of camp.

Batman first appeared as a character in DC Comics in 1939, which makes him almost 90 years old. His mythology is perhaps one of the most recognizable story tropes in global pop culture: his beginnings as an orphan whose parents were murdered, his secret identity as millionaire Bruce Wayne, and the dozens of villains he’s had to wrangle with. Whether across film, television, print media or beyond, Batman is a permanent fixture of American culture.

Although it may sound strange now—when we’re arguably oversaturated with Batman—the superhero wasn’t always thought of as a box-office draw. In fact, it wasn’t until January 1966 that he was first brought to the screen, when the Batman television series premiered on ABC and quickly became wildly popular.

Starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin/ Dick Grayson, the series emulated the colorful and heightened aesthetics of the comic books. The tone was remarkably comedic and light-hearted, the performances were broad and larger-than-life, the dialogue was stylized so much it became a point of parody, and the production design resembled a cartoon world—a far cry from the gritty version of the hero we mostly see today.

After the success of the first season, 20th Century Fox decided to capitalize on its popularity and produce a feature-length version, which combined all the major supervillains into one extended narrative arc. The film was released in theaters on July 30, 1966 to moderate success, and would later air on television in 1971, years after the series had been cancelled. 

The Caped Crusader’s Cinematic Debut

Batman: The Movie represents the superhero genre at its most bare-bones. Its story follows Batman and Robin (West and Ward reprising their roles from the series) as they try to stop four of their greatest enemies from taking over the world: The Joker (Cesar Romero), The Penguin (Burgess Meredith), The Riddler (Frank Gorshin), and Catwoman (Lee Meriweather, replacing Julie Newmar from the series).

Fittingly, the film feels like a series of comic vignettes in which the Dynamic Duo fight obstacle after obstacle, from jumping sharks and torpedo attacks, to bomb threats and a dehydrator that turns world leaders into dust.

Contrary to the kinds of superhero storytelling we’ve grown accustomed to in recent years, there’s no emotional backstory here to be found—no explanation for why Batman turned to crime fighting, no Machiavellian motives from the villains, and little dimension for any of the supporting characters.

It’s all very black-and-white: the bad guys do bad things because they are bad, and the heroes save the day because they are good. These are the archetypes at the very foundation of the genre, and in that sense the film shares more in common with the action serials of the ’40s.

A Bat For All Seasons

The heavily stylized visual look and tone heavily influenced the way audiences perceived Batman as a character, and in turn affected how future interpretations would be shaped. It became the franchise’s North Star, almost as if filmmakers taking on new versions of the hero asked themselves: “How much do I want to diverge from Adam West?”

After Tim Burton reintroduced Batman to the big-screen with Gothic flair in ’89 and his follow-up Batman Returns, out director Joel Schumacher’s pair of totally ’90s films, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, harkened closest to the campy sensibilities of the original series & movie. Though they’ve retroactively been embraced by queer viewers for that very reason, they were deemed so garish & over-the-top at the time that they nearly derailed the franchise entirely. It would take Nolan’s grim and grounded approach to The Dark Knight to get the hero back in mainstream audiences’ good graces.

Because of this, there’s been much debate over the years about which “approach” to Batman is the most legitimate: Should the stories stay true to the comic-book origins, or does the hero finds his thematic power in interpretations that reflect & refract our modern times? (We haven’t even mentioned the long-running animated series, the two recent cinematic takes from Ben Affleck and Robert Pattinson, or the delightful LEGO parody!)

But at least for the queer community, 1966’s Batman: The Movie will also hold a special place in our hearts.

Camp & Queerness In Batman: The Movie

Of course we tend to gravitate to media with broad & deliciously committed villain performances, and on that front Batman over-delivers: With their biting wits and remarks, their over-the-top costuming, and the no-hold-barred scenery chewing, the quartet of supervillains here might as well be competitors on Drag Race!

As Catwoman, Lee Meriweather’s purring sensuality is to die for, as is The Joker’s overt flamboyance. Not for nothing, actor Cesar Romero is widely considered to have been closeted at the time, so as far as we’re concerned, that means our first on-screen Joker is canonically queer.

There’s also the not-so-subtle homoeroticism that between Batman and his trusty sidekick Robin: C’mon, two close friends that live together, work together, and fight crime together in tight spandex? They become each other’s greatest emotional leverage in the villain’s plan, and the script’s bareness leaves a lot of room for interpretation as to what the true nature of their relationship could be behind closed doors.

But at its core, Batman displays a shameless sincerity and openness that has become rare in this genre. There’s no cynicism about humanity, there are no anti-heroes that need to subvert their flaws to conquer evil, there’s no restraint when it comes to the larger-than-life depictions of its characters. And, ultimately, there’s pride in how ridiculous it all gets, because it remains authentic to its comic-book origins. Because if there’s anything we gays can relate to, it’s authenticity.

Batman… Returns???

Batman feels quite dated when watching today; its approach to characters we now know too well, its economic storytelling, and its pre-CGI practical effects do make the six decades that have gone by since its release very obvious.

Yet it also has an embrace of whimsy that is sorely lacking in today’s cinematic landscape, superhero movies or otherwise. The moment we started taking these stories too seriously is perhaps also the moment that its core tenets became diluted. And to that we say: Make Batman Campy Again!

We’re not used to fishermen understating the size of things, but National Fishing Month actually runs longer than a month, extending from July 24 to August 30.

And on social media, gay anglers are showing off all the right angles. (Yes, gays do fish, and not just in the recent film On the Sea.)

“It’s practically a law up here,” one Reddit user from Minnesota wrote in a recent r/askgaybros thread. “Love fishing.”

“It’s my dream to be casting some lines while hanging out with a cute dude,” another commenter wrote. “Just two bros fishing, maybe [au natural]. Ahhh, sounds like perfection.”

Timothée Chalamet may have played a gay twink long ago in Call Me By Your Name, but in the current timeline, another twink is coming to snatch Chalamet’s wig. And honestly? He’s giving the Marty Supreme actor a serious run for his money.

While Chalamet is cementing his obnoxious bad boy persona via Kashi ads (ew) and talking about how fine art is boring, the man who calls himself by the name Eddie Veyro is making serious waves on OF and beyond. He’s using his resemblance to Mr. Kylie Jenner to promote his own personal, very spicy brand, and wouldn’t you know it, it’s totally working out for him!

While Eddie’s OF page proudly proclaims that “the Timothée lookalike fantasy brought you here,” he’s also very smart to add the disclaimer that he is NOT, in fact, the actual Timothée Chalamet. “Any perceived resemblance is third-party opinion,” he states clearly up top, for obvious a** covering reasons. Glad that’s cleared up, because nobody comes to OF to see covered a**es.

Veyro splits his time between London and Mexico, where he seems to have a pretty chill time collaborating with other creators, hanging out, and putting in some long, hard hours in the gym.

While we definitely see the resemblance, it’s definitely giving way more little lad who loves berries and cream (in a good way!) than Timothée in his current more grunge-forward iteration. And do we detect a soupçon of young Justin Hawkins of The Darkness in there?

It’s definitely not a perfect 1:1 with the real Timothée, but that’s not stopping Veyro from racking up followers, which is pretty hard to do in the ultra-competitive OF market. On that platform—and even in Veyro’s own retweets on X—you can find Joe Locke lookalikes, Connor Storrie lookalikes, and even a Chord Overstreet lookalike for those of us who have slightly more vintage memory holes.

The celebrity-adjacent OF fantasy genre is absolutely booming, and we can’t blame these guys for cashing in. In today’s economy, you’ve got to work with what the good lord gave you. And if the good lord gave you a striking resemblance to an A-list Hollywood actor, it’s only natural that you’d use that fortune fact to bolster your brand.

Of course, we’re all thinking the same thing here: does the real Timothée know, and does he care? Does he have an opinion about having his own OF category? Or is he too focused on his latest brand deal to care?

Currently, we don’t know. But if Chalamet does know about his OF twin, he’s being very classy about it, which is kind of a surprise, considering his very openly, non-classy views on ballet and opera.

In today’s world, it’s got to feel pretty weird to be a recognizable-enough brand that you have your own OF genre dedicated to you. Then again, it probably feels just a little bit awesome, too.

It seems like Mike Johnson’s humiliation deepens every week, and we’d feel a lot worse if the anti-LGBTQ+ Speaker of the House wasn’t signing himself up for it by simping for Tr*mp’s agenda.

For most of this year, a big piece of that agenda has been Tr*mp’s racist SAVE Act, a consistently-defeated measure that, if passed, would force voters to show physical ID at polling locations across the country. An even more ghoulish version of the measure would have made states submit voter rolls to the federal government in a clear betrayal of 15th Amendment.

The SAVE Act has been through several big changes in its short life, but even in a tamed down, expurgated form, politicians from both parties have spoken out about the measure’s many problematic points, including the big one: millions of Americans are not in possession of a photo ID, a fact that would essentially erase their ability to cast a vote under the act’s specifications.

Which is exactly what MAGA Republicans want. In fact, Johnson and his fellow GOP figureheads are so committed to getting Tr*mp’s dead-in-the-water act passed that they’ve invoked the high holy name of Olive Garden—which now requires ID for members to access their unlimited pasta deal—in a last-ditch attempt to make SAVE happen.

Politics, but make it gay!

Which brings us to today’s Johnson drama. This week, the speaker reamed Democrats over their refusal to pass the SAVE Act. His logic? Because Republicans hitched the bill to a measure that would restrict congressional stock trading, Johnson decided that Democrats just didn’t want to reign in corruption and insider trading in Washington. By his logic, if they’d cared enough about that issue, they would have passed the SAVE Act just to see the other bill enacted. “Nearly 200 Democrats voted to ALLOW Members of Congress to participate in shady stock trading and voted AGAINST requiring voter ID at the polls,” Johnson cried on X this week.

But that dog won’t hunt, and Thomas Massie was quick to call BS on the whole thing. Replying to Johnson’s tweet, Massie pointed out that the stock trading bill isn’t the problem here—it’s the SAVE Act.

“You could ban stock trading by U.S. Representatives tomorrow,” Massie wrote. “Instead you put this political gimmick up for a vote which had a poison pill for Dems in it—Voter ID.”

Massie and his fellow non-Tr*mp-pilled Republicans aren’t taking the bait. The SAVE Act has already died many deaths, and Tr*mp still refuses to give up on the discriminatory measure.

Johnson had no response for Massie, who along with Senators Bill Cassidy, Thom Tillis, and John Cornyn are creating a formidable GOP resistance against Tr*mp’s unconstitutional war, his plans for a J6 slush fund, and his now-scrapped Todd Blanche appointment.

Massie was the first Republican to publicly stand against Tr*mp after losing his primary race earlier this year. At that point, the co-author of the Epstein Files Transparency Act realized he had nothing to lose and started causing massive problems for the president in the House. At the time, it was a risky move. But now, with Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham out of the picture, Republicans in both the House and Senate are finally feeling bold enough to stop Tr*mp in his tracks.

Which is terrible news for Mike Johnson, one of the few Tr*mp cabinet members who hasn’t yet abandoned the sinking ship.

Massie is far from a perfect figure. Before seeing the light, the Kentucky rep. voted for an earlier iteration of the SAVE Act, and we definitely don’t appreciate the recent retweet that (however jokingly) characterized the act as “fake and gay” (derogatory.) But at this point, anyone who’s willing to read Johnson the riot act—and embarrass him publicly—is fighting the good fight.

For his first feature film in 12 years, New Queer Cinema auteur Gregg Araki made a kinky comedy about a provocative artist (Olivia Wilde) & her submissive muse (Cooper Hoffman) called I Want Your Sex.

And if that title sounds familiar, that’s because it shares a name with 1987 George Michael track, the lead single from his smash-hit debut solo album Faith. But is this moment of queer pop culture crossover just a happy coincidence, or is there a deeper intention behind it?

“I love that question because I’ve literally done 500 interviews in the last month, and I don’t think anyone’s asked me that,” Araki joked with Queerty on the red carpet of his new film’s LA premiere.

As the director tells it, he always knew he wanted to have the word “sex” in the title—after all, the movie is very much about sex, and the apparent lack of it being had among younger generations. So when he happened to hear the eponymous George Michael song playing one day, it was a sort of lightbulb moment:

“I love the way it doesn’t really make sense, right? It’s not I want to have sex with you, it’s just I want your sex.” Araki felt the animal-like intensity & directness of its central plea was the perfect match for his film, capturing the unbridled sense of eroticism he observed was sorely lacking in the world today.

Yet George Michael’s influence on the film—and on Araki in general—goes much deeper, as do the pop artist’s many contemporaries who managed to push the conversation forward around sex & sexuality amid mainstream success.

The legends came together in 1987 for “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” one of the best pop duets, period.

“People were like, ‘Gen Z doesn’t know who George Michael is; the title won’t make any sense!’,” the filmmaker revealed. “But I didn’t care because I like the way it sounds, and for me, that is what the movie’s getting at. Even if people don’t know where we’re coming from, the attitude of it goes back to that culture of George Michael, Madonna, Prince, David Bowie, when the doors were kind of opening for sexuality and queerness.”

Araki specifically remembers that, before going solo, Michael was putting out music with Wham! that he considered to be “super gay-coded.” There was a sort of if-you-know-you-know quality for queer folks in the cocky confidence of “I’m Your Man” or in the secretive transgressions of “Careless Whisper,” yet these songs were celebrated by the masses, climbing charts all over the globe.

When he finally stepped out on his own, Michael felt even more emboldened to embrace these qualities in his work. There was nothing coded about the unbridled desire of “I Want Your Sex”—a brazen move considering it was the radio’s first taste of his upcoming album Faith—and as such it was censored by certain stations like the BBC which only permitted it to play in the evenings. Despite that, it was a massive hit that went Platinum, proving Michael would be just as much of a hot commodity without Wham!

It was a time of moral conservatism of the Reagan era, of growing fear & paranoia around the AIDS epidemic; meanwhile the biggest pop stars on the planet were saying screw it—and screw me! “There was something to that idea of sexuality being this taboo thing, but kind of an adventure,” Araki reflected.

As our current administration continues to demonize queerness and our culture becomes increasingly sexless, the filmmaker couldn’t help but connect the dots between then & now. In that sense, calling his movie I Want Your Sex wasn’t just a way to grab your attention; it was a purposeful nod to George Michael and the many fearless trailblazers who gave us permission to liberate ourselves from shame and give in to desire, even if the world around us wants to scare us into sterile complacency.

And speaking of fearless trailblazers, when you go see Araki’s latest, keep and eye out for a special nod to Madonna, whose own embrace of all things Erotica was and continues to be an influence on the filmmaker.

On the red carpet, he was very pleased to share with Queerty that the Queen Of Pop makes a sort of “cameo” in I Want Your Sex via a shirt worn by Cooper Hoffman—an actual vintage tee that came courtesy of his costume designer Ari Phillips, whose been collaborating with and styling Madonna since the ’90s.

“God knows I couldn’t get a Madonna shirt in one of my movies on my own,” Araki said with a laugh. “But Ari just makes a call and it happens!”

In true provocateur fashion, Araki has Hoffman’s character wearing the shirt in a scene where he pleasures himself, getting caught up in the fantasy until he climaxes all over himself—Madonna’s iconic visage suddenly covered in the sticky stuff.

Despite the mess, we’re pretty sure she’d be proud of her little role in I Want Your Sex. And, somehow, we have a feeling George Michael would be, too.

I Want Your Sex is now playing in theaters everywhere.

Welcome back to Y2GAY, where we take another look at some of the defining queer cinema of the early 2000s. Today, let’s revisit a road trip classic years ahead of its time.

I don’t think I need to tell anyone here that in 2005, they were not making mainstream movies about trans people. Especially not lead trans characters, and especially not played by trans women or cis women actors. But when out-gay filmmaker Duncan Tucker pitched studios a road trip comedy with a heavy side of gender dysphoria, somehow, the money materialized.

Transamerica, Tucker’s first and only feature film, tells the story of Sabrina “Bree” Osbourne (Desperate Housewives‘ Felicity Huffman), a middle-aged trans woman working toward her longed-for bottom surgery date. When we’re introduced to Bree, we see she’s cut off from her family, her community, and the broader world around her.

She tells her therapist she’s a virgin, except for a college encounter so “tragically lesbian” she barely thought it counted. But when Bree learns just a week before her surgery date that the son she never knew she had is alone, in jail, and in need of a friend, she’s forced (by an evil therapist!) to do the right thing.

Ultimately, it does turn out to be the right thing for Bree. But at the start, she’s understandably upset. All Bree wants to do is live her life stealth, and for the most part, she’s able to pass. She works two jobs: as a telemarketer and dishwasher at a Mexican restaurant. Every penny she’s been able to save has gone toward gender-affirming care.

When her therapist gate-keeps the forms Bree needs to get her surgery approved until she reunites with her son Toby (former child star Kevin Zegers), she’s left with no other choice. She travels cross country to find and help him, learning that he’s a young sex worker in active addiction. The two drive together back to California, where Bree gets her surgery and Toby tries to make it big… in the adult entertainment industry.

Tucker based the character of Bree on his roommate, an intersex woman who found it easier to identify as a trans woman throughout the ’90s. Hearing her story, Tucker wanted to magnify the feeling of being alone and unloved in the world through the handy trope of the queer cross-country road trip.

Just 10 years before, we’d seen two high-profile comic attempts with Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert and To Wong Foo. But Transamerica‘s mission was different. With Bree, Tucker was able to honestly capture the period of transition that most trans folks would like to forget: That in-between moment when you’re out to yourself and the world, but still soaked in the shame that threatens to pull you right back into the closet.

Bree doesn’t out herself as Toby’s parent when they first meet. She doesn’t disclose her trans status, either, for obvious reasons. After Toby realizes that Bree is trans and not a church worker as she’s claimed, his bitter immature reaction is laced with transphobia. But Bree fights back. “My body may be a work in progress but there is nothing wrong with my soul,” she says. “Jesus made me this way for a reason, so I could suffer and be reborn the way he was.”

Throughout the journey, as Bree encounters violent transphobia from her son, her parents, and passing strangers, she’s forced to find the part of herself that can, and will, stand up for herself. At a party scene where Bree finally gets to coexist with some other trans women, she sits alone, stuck inside herself, still too ashamed to embrace her community.

But as the trip comes to a close, she becomes exactly who she’s always known she was. Not a work in progress, but a woman who refuses to let the ignorant cis world define her. “You never had a son,” she tells her mother after she pleads with Bree to not to do the “awful thing” of getting bottom surgery. Later, in a private moment with Toby, Bree admits that the love of her parents is something she wishes she had, even if she knows she has to learn to live without it.

“I wish just once they’d look at me and see me,” she says. “That’s all. Just really see me.”

That’s the thing so many of us want more than anything in those first hard months—sometimes years—after coming out. We’re met with everything from violence to disbelief to religious diatribes about why what we’re doing with our bodies and lives is against nature. And we have to find the strength to do it anyway. But that hurt never goes away.

Tucker fought for a cis woman—as opposed to a cis man—to play Bree, and it paid off (though trans icon Alexandra Billings almost got the part, and that would have been even better.) He didn’t want Bree to look, in the hateful convention of the time, like a “man in a dress.” He wanted her to look like the woman she is.

What Felicity Huffman brings to the role is a deeply felt empathy that’s never trite or self-pitying. On the outside, Bree is wrapped in diaphanous, powder-pink outfits. But when we get those flashes of insight about where she’s come from and how hard she’s fought to realize herself, we see flashes of red in the strong, secure woman rise up.

For trans people still battling internalized transphobia, every cruel word finds its target deep inside the most frightened, wounded part of us. That’s how we learn to stand up for ourselves and each other, long before we feel we’re ready for the fight. But the fight finds us.

Transamerica is far from a perfect portrait of trans life, but it gets one thing right: the way your heart can end up opening in the least-expected ways during the hardest part of your transition. It gets its point across so well that Dolly Parton even wrote a thematically-perfect original song to close out the film. When Toby and Bree finally find each other again at the end of a long journey, it’s a heart-melting moment that takes you by surprise even though you know it’s coming. They’ve both changed just enough to become the family neither of them had before.

“It hurts,” Bree tells her therapist after finally getting that coveted surgery. Everything hurts after surgery, but she’s talking about something else.

“I know,” her therapist says, hugging her. “That’s what hearts do.”
