Welcome back to our queer film retrospective, “A Gay Old Time.” In this week’s column, we’re revisiting a New Queer Cinema classic based on a true-crime tale, 1992’s Swoon.

There’s always been a cultural fascination with true-crime stories. Although the modern media landscape bombards us with the genre on a larger and much more regular basis than it ever did (from podcasts and limited series, to tell-all documentaries and never-ending film adaptations), entertainment has long ripped their stories from the headlines, adding a tantalizing quality that audiences can’t seem to resist.

Even more so, there’s a handful of-real life crime stories so compelling that Hollywood tends to revisit them over and over, from figures like Bonnie and Clyde and Al Capone, to more modern examples like Candy Montgomery or the Menendez brothers.

At this point, it’s rare that a new adaptation of an already-told true-crime tale is able to breathe new life into the characters or material. But this week we;ll dive into a film that not only completely reimagines how it tells its central story, but also brings to the surface its queer themes that previous interpretations left as subtext, or outright ignored.

The Set-Up

In 1924, two college students in Chicago, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, kidnapped and killed fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks in what was then deemed “the crime of the century.” Leopold and Loeb, who were also involved in a romantic relationship, aimed to prove that a perfect crime could indeed be committed, and wanted to showcase their intellectual superiority by actually doing it. However, sloppy evidence left behind eventually got them caught and they were sentenced to life in prison.

The Leopold and Loeb case served as the inspiration for many works of fiction, most notably for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1948 film Rope (and the 1929 play that inspired it). Rope uses the concept of two college students trying to pull of the perfect crime, though it famously made the homosexual relationship between the leads heavily subtextual. The case also served as the inspiration for other works like the 1956 novel Compulsion and its film adaptation, the 2002 film Murder By Numbers with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Gosling, and there are even echoes of it in projects like Michael Haneke’s Funny Games or the Scream franchise.

However, in almost every adaptation of the crime, the romantic and sexual relationship between Leopold and Loeb was toned down, implied, or simply removed from the narrative. That is until director Tom Kalin’s 1992 groundbreaking new queer cinema film Swoon.

It’s Not So Black & White…

Swoon is one of the most straightforward adaptations of the Leopold and Loeb case, and at the same time one of the most imaginative and radical takes on the story. Unlike many past and future adaptations, it does not change any character names or details of the narrative, or tone down the deeply emotional and sexual connection between the two protagonists.

It shows Leopold and Loeb (played here by Craig Chester and Daniel Schlachet, respectively) as two young, restless college students that spend their days committing petty crimes and having sex with one another, until one of them comes up with what he thinks is the perfect crime to commit. But when the body of the young boy they kidnap and kill is discovered, evidence slowly leads up to them, until they are captured and put on a grueling public trial.

Swoon is told through a highly stylized lens that brings to the very front the elements of the story that other adaptations decided to conveniently ignore or bury. Mainly, it emphasizes how much the rampant homophobia and prejudices in society helped frame the public perception of the criminals, and how views on homosexuality are easily tangled with crime, moral judgment, and punishment.

Shot in gorgeous black and white cinematography, with jagged angles and rotating camera movements, and using elements like old stock footage and an expressionistic mise-en-scene, the film creates a disorienting and destabilizing mood that is meant to make you feel outside of yourself, and that things are never quite right (an apt metaphor for the queer experience during the early century).

Homosexuality On Trial

Chester and Schlachet’s performances really shine between the naiveté of two misunderstood young boys in love that only have each other, and the darkness lying underneath them that threatens to come out at any second. They move seamlessly between intimate moments of connection—between the two characters in bed or playing outside in a field—to jarring moments of societal violence, like being questioned about their whereabouts at a dinner party, or going slowly insane inside a prison cell.

In one of the movie’s most memorable and striking sequences, when Leopold and Loeb are called to testify in their trial, a marital bed appears in the middle of the courtroom, as the two of them lie down & cuddle without their clothes while being questioned. This image gives us the thematic thesis of the whole movie, in which the criminal actions of Leopold and Loeb cannot be taken separately from their romantic relationship. In the eyes of the law and society, these are equal crimes that feed into each other.

The film does not in any way justify the crimes at the center, but it does make for a compelling argument for how the relationship between the two criminals played an essential role not only in them executing the crime, but also on the way it was perceived, judged, and how it has lived on in culture. In a way, Tom Kalin took a true crime case that had a life of its own on screen, and argues that it cannot be separated from the queerness at its center, the way it has been done in other versions. It just doesn’t make sense without it.

Still Swooning

Swoon is considered one of the seminal films of the New Queer Cinema movement of the 1990s. The film captures many of the narrative, stylistic, and thematic concerns that would run through this wave for the better part of a decade, and more than 30 years later, its central argument still stands strong.

Entertainment may have gotten us used to—and even desensitized to—true crime, but it’s always worth asking if what we are being told is the entire story. Truth is usually more complex. Ironically, it’s not as black and white as we may think.

On this third Saturday of September, we’re commemorating National Dance Day. The annual celebration “encourages Americans of all ages to incorporate dance into their lives” and “aims to educate the public about dance and its many benefits, as well as make dance accessible and inclusive to everyone,” according to American Dance Movement.

Indeed, dance can be joyful, liberating, and most importantly, fun for professionals and amateurs alike. In a recent Reddit thread about dancing at gay bars, Redditors shared their tips on how to best bust a move.

One encouraging poster advised others to “just step out on to the dance floor and start shaking your groove thing.”

Another user provided some helpful steps: “Step 1: Get your booty on the dance floor. Step 2: Look at someone dancing. Step 3: Copy their movement for about 15-30 seconds. Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 with another dancer you see until the song is over or until you need a break. Step 5: Take a break and hydrate. Step 6: Go back to step 1 until you drop. Boom. You just danced the night away.”

Somebody else said it’s best to just “go with the vibe.”

Basically, Madison Gatanis is constantly worried about her boyfriend Braxton Stone, not because he’s an OnlyFans creator… but because he exclusively makes content for gay men.

“Maybe it’s the money that turns me on, maybe it’s the guys that turns me on,” Stone said in the video.

Uh-huh.

Watch.

In the episode, Stone explained that he stumbled into the career path after sharing thirst traps online and quickly realizing that making gay-for-pay content was a LOT more lucrative than going the straight route.

To the tune of more than $60,000 a month.

“Straight creators don’t make a lot of money,” he said. “If you’re a gay creator, you make way more money, and if you’re a gay creator and you like it, you’ll make even more money.”

Wait… what?

Yes, you read that correctly; while Stone maintained that he identifies as heterosexual and doesn’t have an “emotional spot” for men, he did cop to enjoying making LGBTQ+ content, which seemed to rustle his girlfriend’s feathers.

In fact, Gatanis admitted that she’s “honestly sometimes” afraid that Stone would leave her for a man.

“He makes me feel a little bit insecure,” she said. “He’ll bring up how a man feels better … At the end of the day, I’m not a guy and I can’t be.”

Of course, it doesn’t help that the entire internet has opinions on their relationship either.

In one clip, Stone shows commenters who sent him pictures of the Nile River in Egypt — a reference to Wendy Williams’ iconic one-liner about a gay husband – as well as LGBTQ+ users who noted that “he’s done things I ain’t even done before as a gay.”

Oop!

Naturally, the whole thing got crazier when Stone’s mom joined the conversation and gave her hesitant approval of his decision to make gay content.

(He also joked that his dad would likely appreciate his videos more, because he’s “always been a little fruity.” Which, um, OK?!)

Nevertheless, we were rooting for Stone and Gatanis… until we did some further digging.

Although their episode of Love Don’t Judge has recently picked up some viral traction, it was posted on YouTube more than a year ago, and after some social media sleuthing, it seems their romance may have fizzled out.

Gatanis no longer follows Stone on Instagram, although his NSFW social media accounts are up and running, and he proudly proclaims that he pushes his “boundaries with every collab.”

And that he’s still straight.

The whole thing brings to mind HBO Max’s DTF St. Louis, which followed two happily married men (Jason Bateman and David Harbour) who found themselves increasingly drawn to each other.

The series has brought up a ton of feelings for women with queer husbands whose refusal to acknowledge their own sexualities has wreaked havoc on their relationships.

Honestly, we think both Gatanis and Stone might enjoy it.

Andrew Scott always manages to hold our attention, whether it’s in priest cassocks or a jockstrap. But despite the reactions from hot-and-bothered fans, he rarely sees them.

Earlier this month, the Irish actor went viral after a clip from his upcoming comedy series It Gets Worse surfaced onto the internet. In the clip, Scott’s character tells another character, played by Leo Reich, “you’re just a hole for daddy” before spitting in his mouth.

During a recent interview with Variety following the Telluride premiere of his new film Elsinore, Scott shared that he’s not online, and therefore doesn’t often see fans reactions to viral clips of his.

“I don’t have the internet. I never see it,” he said. “It’s actually wild: You never know what feral things people [will say].”

Perhaps it’s for the best that Scott doesn’t see everyone’s reactions. While many often praise his acting chops, a lot of the responses can be unhinged.

“i need this done to me immediately,” wrote one person on X in response to the , “preferably by andrew scott but i’ll take what i can get.”

While Scott is openly gay, and plays a gay therapist in It Gets Worse, the clip is causing everyone to feel things. “I’m a lesbian,” wrote one person on Threads. “Can’t stop watching the Andrew Scott video. I fear he has transcended my sexuality like Hudson Williams did.”

“Computah, show me that clip of therapist Andrew Scott for the 5273rd time,” wrote another fan.

And those are just the responses we can print!

Scott has his work cut out for him this year. In addition to It Gets Worse, Elsinore is expected to garner critical acclaim upon its wide release later this year. He’s currently on a festival run with Elsinore, which is based on the true story of Scottish actor Ian Charleson and his final performances as Hamlet at the National Theatre as he was grappling with AIDS. 

As Elsinore is a more serious film for Scott, the response from those who have seen it during its festival run has been a bit more subdued. Still, fans are getting creative expressing their reception.

“Andrew Scott is an absolute powerhouse,” wrote one person on X, “a performance so good he could read air fryer recipes instead of Hamlet and still deliver a career best.”

Though it’ll be a while before fans can see Elsinore in theaters, they seem to be digging Scott’s looks at various festival screenings. 

“Collecting photos of Andrew Scott promoting ‘Elsinore’ like Pokémon cards,” wrote another fan.

As screenings are underway for Elsinore, some early viewers believer Scott has a good chance at next year’s Academy Awards.

“i’m going to tell you right here and right now that the Oscar race is over and if anybody tries to say otherwise Andrew Scott is winning best actor,” wrote one fan. “It is an immense performance having to balance not just Ian Charleson but Ian Charleson as Hamlet.”

Should Scott win Best Actor, he would make history as the first openly gay actor to win the coveted award. 

Elsinore arrives to US theaters on Friday, November 20. A premiere date for It Gets Worse has not yet been announced.

Donald Tr*mp Jr. is having a rough week.

After a scathing ProPublica report, readers learned that the president’s son’s 3-day destination wedding was largely funded by a Russian oligarch. The sh*t didn’t take too long to hit the fan. Even Melania had to send out an emergency statement claiming she had nothing to do with Umar Kremlev, the Putin-associated pal of Don Jr. and his bride Bettina Tr*mp (née Anderson.)

But apparently, all that was just the tip of the iceberg. Hidden in that same report was an even more intriguing detail about Don Jr.’s prenuptial plans. “The president’s son had undergone treatment to better define his jawline for the occasion,” the piece explains, linking to an Instagram post from the treatment center that spilled the beans on Don Jr’s course of Ultherapy, a technology claiming to use Ultrasound technology to help lift and define loose, aging skin.

Politics, but make it gay!

Nothing wrong with that, of course. Plenty of people of all genders enjoy a bit of nip and tuck before the big day. The problem is that for Don Jr., a fan of his father’s sweeping anti-trans agenda, it’s just a tad bit hypocritical.

“Wait, Jr got gender affirming care?” someone commented. Political writer Rob Crilly made the same observation on X.

We know Republicans love a bit of plastic surgery, and honestly, good for them. The problem isn’t the procedures themselves. It’s the political framing of trans peoples’ own gender-affirming care as sick “mutilation” to score ignorant votes, while treating themselves to as much (legal, safe) gender-affirming care as they like.

Don Jr. is as guilty of this as fellow gender-affirming care MAGAite Nancy Mace, who has made her anti-trans views plain—as has Don Jr. Last year, on the anniversary of 9/11, he claimed: “I can’t name, including probably like Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, a group that is more violent per capita than the radical trans movement.”

Cis people might not think that certain procedures have much to do with affirming their gender, but that’s because they don’t have to. Popular surgeries like breast augmentation, Botox, and Don Jr’s own jawline-defining treatment might not seem like a big deal, and in a perfect world, they wouldn’t be, for either cis or trans people.

But we live in a world where the Tr*mps have actively amped up anti-trans prejudice to gain power and make money. For Don Jr. to turn around and use that money to get his own cosmetic treatment—while letting a potential enemy of the country foot the bill for his wedding party—is just a little bit shady. Especially since the Tr*mps have helped foster the lie that transgender surgeries and treatments are paid for by American taxpayers. Which, to be clear, they are overwhelmingly not.

Maybe Don Jr.’s cosmetic surgery center didn’t mean to out him as benefiting from gender-affirming care with their post…or maybe they did. If so, it’s extremely c*nty of them and we’re obsessed.

If your one takeaway from The Wolf of Wall Street was “gee, those quaalude things sound really fun!” I’ve got some good news, and some bad news.

The good news is, you’re not alone. Interest in the once-extinct sleeping pill-turned-rave-drug has created a black market quaalude renaissance, according to a recent Guardian report. The 2013 film has apparently inspired people in the year 2026 to start synthesizing their own versions of ludes, and now, people are getting addicted to the once-banned drugs all over again.

“Because of Wolf of Wall Street, quaaludes have this proper vibe to them,” one anonymous source told the paper. “They’re these very classy, ancient, extinct drugs.” They were also the drugs Bill Cosby gave to his alleged victims.

You can probably guess the bad news, which is that these drugs are totally unregulated and potentially very dangerous, and they’re not the only ones.

Quaaludes—aka “disco biscuits”—were technically banned in the mid-1980s. Before that, doctors were “giving them out like candy” as part of the ’50s/60s sedative boom that put “Mother’s Little Helper” pills in the hands of anyone who asked for them. Now, they’re back in action, along with another party drug that’s gone dangerously unregulated: kratom, a highly addictive synthetic opioid responsible for the recent death by overdose of adult content creator Christian Styles.

Quaaludes, at least, aren’t sold over the counter. Synthetic opioids like kratom, kava, and its derivative 7-OH, however, can be purchased at gas stations and cafes in states like Florida thanks to legal loopholes that class the drugs as less dangerous than other opioids.

While kratom isn’t as addictive as heroin, it works on the same parts of the brain, and can easily lead to overdose if not used responsibly. Quaaludes might not be as easily accessible, but because of their black market existence, counterfeit ludes spiked with fentanyl have also found their way to the public.

For the queer community, these newer offerings pose a special risk. According to a 2024 study, LGBTQ+ people are more at risk of addiction than their straight counterparts as a direct result of discrimination.

“For men who have sex with men, smartphone technology has increased access to both casual sex and drugs,” the report explains. “Among the chemsex community, sex enhanced by drugs such as crystal methamphetamine or GHB/GBL can be an immensely joyful, freeing, and pleasurable experience for participants.” A 2022 study even found that bisexuals were at higher risk for kratom use specifically.

All of which makes the preponderance of over-the-counter synthetic opioids and street quaaludes even more concerning.

The DEA is on the way to classifying kratom with more dangerous Schedule I drugs that pose a high risk of addiction, but certain threshold loopholes stand in the way of harsher 7-OH restrictions nationwide. Quaaludes, already being illegal, pose a greater challenge. We learned this lesson from the opioid epidemic: a once-legal substance can have a long afterlife in the underground, and it’s going to take more than a bit of finger-wagging to curb its effects on the community.

If you think the internet is a sh*tshow right now, consider the fact that most sites and social media platforms have content moderators who actually keep this place from being even more heinous. Yikes is right!

It’s hard to even wrap your head around some of the things these moderators must bear witness to (and we don’t recommend trying). One hopes the job comes with access to some solid therapy because otherwise that could really mess with your psyche.

Nosebleed is a bold new psychosexual thriller that follows that idea into the darkest corners of the dark web, a new queer short that questions how our ideas of identity and intimacy are shaped in our modern digital dystopia.

From writer-direct Gage Oxley, the film takes audiences inside the warped mind of Victor (British stage actor Adam Wadsworth), who works as a content moderator for one of the world’s largest social media networks. Due to the nature of his job, his life is the very definition of doom-scroll: and endless gauntlet of some of the most unhinged and inhumane things imaginable.

But Victor’s far past the point of being desensitized to it all: he’s perversely into it. So much so that, off the clock, he’s immersed himself in a deep-web subculture where hidden cameras, AI, and other technologies are used to create graphic and explicit content of his own, much of which involves the colleague (Firebird‘s Theo Walker) he can’t keep his mind off of.

So it should go without saying that Nosebleed is not necessarily an easy watch, especially as Victor descends into web-induced madness and obsession, leaving us wondering if he’s actually committing the monstrosities we see playing out on screen, or if they’re just the creations of his sick imagination.

Ultimately, it’s a story driven by the classic question: Are people born evil, or is that evilness shaped by the horrors of the world around us?

“Nosebleed was born out of an urgent need to interrogate how intimacy, masculinity, and identity are being reshaped (and sometimes broken) by the digital spaces we inhabit,” Oxley said in a press statement. “The research for this project took me deep into the worlds of content moderation, deepfake culture, and the increasingly blurred line between reality and performance. From the outset, I knew this story had to be raw, unflinching, and deeply human.”

Aside from Wadsworth and Walker, the film also stars Kelli Hollis (Emmerdale Farm), Ali Hardiman (Wreck), Théodore Sylvain, Elliott Rogers, Cameron Summers, and familiar face that may surprise you: Colin Grafton—that’s right, the Olympic skater and former Dancing On Ice star who skated the The Vivienne and melted hearts when he came out as gay in early 2024.

Nosebleed marks a proper screen acting debut for the athlete—playing a character navigating celebrity through the lens of the internet—but one he couldn’t resist given he went on his own journey of self-discovery while being watched by hundreds of thousands of people on screen.

“This role is deeply personal for me,” Grafton previously shared. “As someone who’s spent much of my life performing, I’m drawn to stories that explore what happens when the performance stops—when we’re left with the truth of who we are Nosebleed is raw, provocative, and unafraid, and that’s exactly the kind of work I am excited to make my acting debut in.”

From Oxygen Films, Nosebleed is set for release in “winter 2026,” and though there’s no word yet on how or where you can watch it for yourself, you can bet we’ll keep you updated.

Don Jr.’s one-two punch of wedding scandals has come at an inopportune time as Republicans face down midterm mayhem.

This week, we learned that Don Jr.’s wedding to the daughter of an Epstein bank president was potentially paid for with—shocker!—ill-gotten gains. Putin pal and Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev footed the bill for at least part of the lavish three-day celebration in May, and it’s raising questions across the Internet. And we can bet that Tr*mp Sr. is not happy about it.

For Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, however, the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

On MS NOW, the Georgia Peach himself was asked his thoughts about Don Jr.’s wedding celebration in pointed terms. “Were you surprised,” Laurence O’Donnell asked Ossoff, “to discover that a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin paid for some of Donald Tr*mp Jr.’s wedding, apparently Donald Tr*mp Jr.’s father couldn’t afford it.”

Talk about saying the quiet part out loud!

Despite Tr*mp and his sons making a reported $1 billion from crypto alone—half of which came from Don Jr. and Eric Tr*mp’s main hustle, World Liberty Financial—evidently neither Tr*mp nor his son could afford to cover the cost of Don Jr.’s destination wedding in the Bahamas.

Go figure!

Ossoff, however, wasn’t surprised by any of it. He’s focused on one thing, and one thing alone: beating Tr*mp’s MAGA agenda at the polls in November.

“We are witnessing people drunk with power,” Ossoff responds, “who are utterly reckless, utterly corrupt.”

Ossoff went further. “They believe they’re untouchable. They believe they’re invincible. Let’s prove them wrong.” The legal system might never catch up to the Tr*mp family crime syndicate, as the lack of Epstein-related investigations proves all too painfully. But as Ossoff says, we do have the power to oust these people from government.

Unless Tr*mp launches a fresh plan to confuse, disqualify, and intimdate voters at the polls, that is.

This week, the Supreme Court struck down Tr*mp’s attempt to doctor mail-in voting rules in a major gain for democracy. However, we know that Tr*mp has other tools in his arsenal. Since this summer, the administration has been hinting at a potential ICE presence at polling centers, an offshoot of Tr*mp’s earlier attempt to force states to hand over voter rolls to the FBI. An earlier version of the SAVE Act would have likewise disenfranchised millions of eligible voters due to the absence of a photo ID or passport.

One thing we know about Tr*mp? He has the gall, and so do all his offspring. Ossoff, however, is the kind of politician who might just prove the antidote to the Tr*mp ethos. He doesn’t fall for gotcha anti-trans talking points like some presidential hopefuls we could name, and he stays on message.

And let’s not forget that raging BDE he’s packing. We’d love to see JD Vance go toe to toe with Ossoff in 2028 just so our man can wipe the floor with him.

“Let’s leave it all on the field,” Ossoff says in a final rallying cry, “and win decisively.”
