(although as a DB property I wonder if fiddling with the templates would do this... leaves to investigate).

Thanks for all your comments - please continue to add them folks - it all helps IBM to work out how to do this best.

My issue that led to this is that the "which version of the connector do I need to use with Notes 8.0.2IF2?" type question. It is too difficult to manage a complex Notes client rollout and management strategy without also needing to intricately manage the Quickr connectors as well.

I see no reason why the Connectors could not be an optional part of the Notes client package and thus always be kept in sync with the version of the Notes client on a machine.

Moving on from that, I would love to see IBM doing more "provisioning" of Notes components directly from the server as was promised by the Workplace Rich Client strategy all those years ago. Whilst SmartUpgrade gives us a limited amount of control over client rollouts, I would love to be able to deploy Quickr connectors, plugins, Sametime user rights etc. all from the server, never needing to access dektops. Wouldn't that help us all?

I think for companies that have Quickr installed and ready for use, delivering the Quickr Connectors with the client (either as part of the install package that is optional [like Activities and Symphony is today] or updatable via SmartUpdate) would help spur Quickr usage in those companies. I also agree about the independent updating of these components (Quickr Connectors, Activities, Symphony, etc) is a requirement, but am far more confident they will make that work than I was around the Lotusphere 2009 time frame.

Companies who do not have Quickr - not sure it would drive folks to request it. The Connectors are something very specific for an application. Having users see that without having Quickr would probably cause more confusion than anything.

And for those asking for a connector that saves straight to Notes, its a huge effort. I am doing that for a customer right now - and the level of effort is gigantic. The whole WindowsNamespace stuff and the windows service that does the syncing is a pretty complicated technology. And none of that works on Linux or Mac - so you really have to build three implementations. Finder extensions on the Mac are a mess currently - I shudder thinking about how to make that work. :-) The packaging of all the Windows components is another issue as well - the Quickr Connector has a lot more 'stuff' than the Activities plug-in. We need Eclipse.org plug-ins to consume more than things we build in Eclipse :)

It would be helpful if we could include it in the Smart Upgrades as an option, or, be able to deliver it as a Smart upgrade itself. Since the connectors seem to be updated more frequently, it would also be very nice if the explorer shutdown/restart was handled better by the installer. Many times, a reboot is unavoidable.

I certainly wouldn't want to see it as part of the default install, but it could also be an option in the components.

Also, when I drag an email onto a place, I should get a mini dialog for putting a title, and some other basic info about it. Instead, I get a html file in quickr, and frequently, the things like graphical signatures wind up in other documents/posts in quickr.

And, while we are on the topic on better integration, things as simple as getting a photo to display in the profile should not be as involved (servlet fun - mine is still not working).

Sametime was fun enough to get a photo displaying - if I am installing Quickr for Domino Services, this sort of stuff should be seamless. Instead, I had tech support tell me to ditch the Domino Server as the directory and go for LDAP. Why o why - it did solve 99% of the problems, but if this doesn't work right, it should be fixed and transparent for a Domino shop to deploy.

Yes - this would help with adoption, if only because users would start asking what that side bar was (like they do now with Quickr).

However, I would only want this if the plugin was still treated as such and we could easily update just the connector if a new Quickr release comes out in between Notes releases.
