Make it a
better place. For you and for me and the entire human race” ~ Michael Jackson

Last night I went to an event that commemorated the 70th
anniversary of the end of World War II, the liberation of those who survived
the persecution of the Nazi regime, and of course, those who perished.

As expected, it was moving and poignant, especially
hearing the detailed stories of some of the survivors and of those who risked
their own lives in helping others to survive.

There were 2 key messages that permeated the evening.
Firstly - that we should never forget what happened. And secondly - that we
should never let it happen again.

And sadly we are still seeing persecution of people
all around the world based on their sex, race, religion, skin colour, sexual preference
and even political ideology.

I am not arguing here for a particular cause other
than universal tolerance and love. It is up to each of us to determine how we
feel on these issues. However, there is a massive risk in assuming we as individuals
cannot influence the whole.

It was Margaret Mead who said “Never doubt that a
small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed,
it’s the only thing that ever has.”

We cannot afford to stand by and watch from the
sidelines because we feel that our voice won’t be heard, or that it doesn’t
impact us. It does.

Elie Wiesel said “The opposite of love is not hate,
it’s indifference.”

And Albert Einstein said “The world is a dangerous
place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the
people who don’t do anything about it.”

These were all very clever people and we should learn
from them. What will you do today (or tomorrow, or next week) to make sure the
world is a better place?

Too Much of a Good Thing

It’s March already – that’s 17% of the year nearly gone! Can someone please tell me exactly where has it gone?

I’m
sure you’ve heard that most New Year’s resolutions don’t survive beyond the end
of February – if they even make it that far!

And
if you did happen to map out the “perfect” year and schedule all the activities
that will lead to your big annual goals, how are you going with finding the
time and energy to do it all?

And
if perhaps you’re not doing too well along that path, are you beating yourself
up for it? The pressure to map out the perfect year can actually lead to
greater anxiety.

I’m
a huge advocate in planning and goal setting - but can you do too much of it?
I’m coming to the conclusion that you can actually overdo it.

So
many of the goals we set are goals around having or doing things. You might be
reflecting on the first 2 months of the year and saying to yourself, “I
certainly got a lot done, but what’s it all for?

It’s
around about this time that you might also start asking yourself “What’s my
higher calling?”, “What am I supposed to
be doing with my life?” and “How do I stop spinning my wheels and get serious
about my purpose for being on this planet?”

The
more relevant question is actually “Who am I meant to BE?”

Or
you might already feel you have found your answers and no longer have to worry
about the burning “What’s my purpose?” question. But here’s the irony…when our
purpose is external to ourselves, if we tie our purpose or meaning to our
vocation, goal or an activity, we could be setting ourselves up for a fall
somewhere down the line.

This
doesn’t negate your burning passion, your inspired mission, your job, your
business, your family, your community contribution, etc. Those things are
powerful, worthwhile and essential - but are they your purpose?

Let
me explain…

I’m
certainly not saying that you shouldn’t feed the starving, house the homeless,
rescue those at risk, protect the environment, empower women, educate the
ignorant or any other worthwhile activity that adds worth and value to our
global community.

What
I do mean is that you don’t need to connect your personal self-worth (or
self-acceptance, self-love etc.) with those activities. It’s because your
self-worth has nothing to do with your skills, vocation or achievements and
everything to do with how you treat yourself. Your purpose may be very
different than what you’ve been taught to believe by societal programming and
inherited paradigms.

If
your work isn’t appreciated, if your efforts are overlooked or criticised, if
you don’t get the client, if people don’t value what you do, if you give and
don’t get thanked in return, if someone “un-friends” you on social media –
well, that’s what sometimes happens. And if you’ve tied your worth to any of
those things then you will only feel deflated, depleted or depressed.

But
if you have connected your purpose within, it’s a whole different story. For
example, it could be that your purpose is to be kind to yourself and to love
yourself unconditionally, thus elevating your energy and positively impacting
on the world around you. Or it could be to take impeccable care of yourself so
that you have the energy to serve others.

Or
perhaps it’s to heal yourself and then becoming a mentor and role model for
others to do the same.

Your
purpose is only partly about what you do. It’s mostly about discovering who you
truly are at your deepest levels, and to nurture and love yourself in the
process. It’s about learning that just being your authentic self is enough.

Full
stop.

There
are plenty of brilliant people who may have a lot to offer but who are messed
up inside and unable to be really effective at their chosen cause. Imagine what
they could accomplish if they knew that no matter how important their mission,
their inner purpose matters even more?

By
all means cherish your work, your hobbies and your passions. You love them and
they are important.

But
when you do your planning (or re-planning) and set your goals, whatever time of
the year it may be, it pays to be a bit softer and kinder towards yourself.
Start with focusing on the things that make you feel good, peaceful, happy, inspired,
abundant and loved. And maybe – just maybe – go a bit slower as well.

From
my soul to yours,

David.

If you only read one blog from me this year, please read this one…

This is the longest blog I’ve ever posted. Will it be worth the approximately 7 minutes it will take to read? I believe so. It is especially timely because you are 10 times more likely to stick with a change made at the New Year than at any other time of the year.¹

I nearly didn’t post it. My ego got in the way quite a few times and said “No, you can’t - it makes you too vulnerable and you must keep up appearances.” Well, sorry ego, you didn’t win this one!

And whilst this blog is ostensibly about my observations, I have written it with you very much in mind and heart. I encourage you to read it with an open mind and an open heart and see how much of it resonates for you. I suspect there might well be a couple of things to which you might want to say “me too!” :).

I did have a couple of alternative headings I was toying with…either “The Power Of The Words You Choose” or “In Search Of Flow”. But I decided that such a heading wasn’t appropriate this time.

OK, so what is this missive about? In a nutshell it is about my biggest lesson from 2014 - and how this will impact 2015 and beyond. I learned so much in 2014. It was yet another year of massive growth and ®evolution – personally and globally.

In December 2013 I chose my 2014 word of the year to be “FLOW”. In case you’re not familiar with the concept, a word of the year is designed to guide you and to give you a steady focus and reminder throughout the year as to what is most important for you thematically. Some people don’t even set resolutions or goals, they just live very much in the present and use their word of the year to evaluate each and every moment as it unfolds i.e. “Is this action/activity/situation/thinking serving [my word of the year]?”

I chose the word FLOW because I had identified that I definitely wasn’t “in flow” and I wanted to be there! I had yet to consciously connect to the quantum field of creation. Instead I was manifesting results driven by unconscious programming, limiting beliefs, old patterns and the like. I was also still way too much in my head and not enough in my heart.

This last one was a real issue, especially as I had learned that thoughts are the electric charge that goes out into the quantum field, whereas feelings are the magnetic charge that draws in from the quantum field.

I also had come to know that we are all on earth because in our loftiest state of being, perched high above the wonderment at the pinnacle of our glory, we wondered what it would be like, even fleetingly, to believe in limits. ²

The conclusion was therefore, that if there were any blocks to flow, it was me that had put them there!

In moving more and more into flow I found that I was actually clogged! Clogged with so much “stuff” – physical stuff, emotional stuff and spiritual stuff.

In September I went for a long walk with my spiritual mentor. In that moment it became so very, very obvious that I was carrying so much of this “stuff” along with me – stuff I didn’t need. As an example I took along a bag with the essentials I thought I might need for our planned “walk and talk”. Today I can laugh at the things in that bag. When I unpacked it that evening I even found a good supply of lint – how symbolic !

It was the beginning of my letting go.

During the year I studied flow closely in an effort to get closer to it. I learned that flow comes from loving yourself and loving what you do. That when you pursue your Soul Goals you get into flow. I came to understand that flow is about recognising your own magnificence and spark of the Divine.

I also discovered just how much your thoughts and beliefs have an effect on flow.

Here’s another blinding flash of the obvious (BFO) I came across along the way - we live in the experience of our thinking which is variable moment by moment, U. Any conclusions we may make about our lives or the world based upon that fundamentally false premise, no matter how logical they may seem, are therefore inherently false as well.

So I concluded that I could no longer focus on the effect – I had to focus on the source of flow instead. And to stay completely open as to the way flow is received. This would require a consciousness of cause (spirituality) versus a consciousness of effect (materiality). And that’s where the concept of Soul Goals³ was so useful to my cause.

In order to do that, I would have to release many things. I would have to surrender the control I had so jealously protected for so long. I would have to stop living in the past and worrying about the future – rather to live in the present moment. I would have to jettison the physical “stuff” that was crowding me out of my house. I would have to liberate ineffective programming and limiting beliefs. I would need to discard the false sense of identity created by my ego and the various “roles” I had taken on.

This would need to be what I termed a “multi-level cleanse”.

I have so much stuff, so much baggage that I’m carrying around with me. And it creates great inertia for change. That’s physical stuff, ideas, concepts, memories, imaginings and fears (especially fears). So how do I shed all of this? One box, one idea, one experience, one emotion at a time. And like a snowball rolling down a mountain it will pick up speed as it goes. Time to let it all go and make way for the new – and yet the original, the authentic – me.

What else is on the list to relinquish?
• Complexity
• Old emotional scars
• Spiritual baggage
• Unresolved issues
• Blame
• Judgement
• Justification
• Comparison
• Negativity
• Excess weight

So my 2015 word of the year was becoming quite apparent. It needed to be one of the many synonyms that indicate letting go. Eventually I decided on the word “SURRENDER”.

I chose SURRENDER as it is a passive process of just letting go, releasing and setting myself free. There is nothing I need to DO – this would be just another thing on my To Do List adding to my overwhelm. It is a path of least resistance.

Of course I realised all of this letting go would bring up an array of fears e.g. If I let go of who I think I am, what will be left? If I let go of control, what will happen? My only option has been to face these fears head on. After all, if it hasn’t been working as well as I’d like so far, what’s the point of doing the same thing again?

Isn’t that another BFO? - If you keep doing more of the same you’ll only end up with more of the same results! Einstein said that the thinking that created the problem is not the same thinking that will be needed to solve the problem. Clever man. And it was Victor Frankl who said that “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

Some of the things I have done, am currently doing or am about to do on my “multi-level cleanse” include:
• Using the 6-monthly rubbish clearance to purge the garage and around the house.
• Undertake a 30 day body cleanse during which I will feed myself highly nutritious super foods, giving my body the chance to do what it naturally does so well i.e. rid itself of toxins and replicate healthy cells for a new me.
• A ritual burning ceremony of all the energetic baggage that I have been carrying .
• Daily visualisation of who I want to be and how I want to feel.
• Daily meditation and connection to Source.

Today I am transforming old patterns of my mind and letting go of thoughts I don’t need to have around any longer. I am releasing all things from the past that have caused any negative attachment. I am preparing for and welcoming new changes, new lessons and new adventures. I welcome new opportunities to grow emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Learning to surrender has possibly been one of the hardest lessons. It has meant letting go of control. Letting go of order. Letting go of everything I thought was right. Learning to be comfortable with vulnerability. Letting go of specifying what, needing to know how and determining when.

And yet the solution is actually simple.

I choose feel peace - and peace has become a way of life.

I do not need to know - and so I know.

I first love myself, feel love and radiate love - and love is mine in every way.

I am grateful and appreciative for all I have - and more is coming my way.

I FEEL what I want – I don’t pray or wish for anything.

All I have to do is let go and trust.

I’ve realised that my treasure is in my heart and that living from my heart gives me FLOW.

So who am I in the present?

I am David Solomon. I have a wealth of knowledge and experience in business. But I woke up one day and realised that my true purpose was to bring all that knowledge with me and live a life of love and flow - and to teach others how they can have a successful business without sacrificing love and flow - because I know that in this part of my journey it’s who I’m meant to be.

The people I really enjoy working with are soul or heart based entrepreneurs - creative, higher purpose people - but really anyone who wants their contribution to make a difference in the world. A large proportion of them are women.

So if you want some help in letting stuff go or just getting clear, working out your Soul Goals, planning out the year so it really is the best year you’ve ever had, looking at how to incorporate your Higher Purpose into your business, building a Higher Purpose Business that is successful on your terms, or even doing a “multi-level cleanse”, please give me a call*
or drop me an email*. It will be my honour to serve you and facilitate for you.

And if I can’t help you I will certainly know someone who can.

Wishing you the year ahead that you wish for yourself!

From my soul to yours,
David.
_____________________________________________________
¹ According to studies by Dr. John Norcross at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, 46% of people who made changes at New Year, were still dedicated to their change 6 months later.
² Notes from the Universe
³ If by chance you haven’t downloaded a copy of my short e-book on Soul Goals you can get it here http://quiddity.vipreplynow.com/SoulGoalsGuide

Whether the following is real or apocryphal I don’t know, but it’s a great story:

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she enquired: “How heavy is this glass of water?”

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

She continued, “The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything.”

Remember to put the glass down.

Getting some perspective

Hands up if you’ve got any challenges or problems right now…

It’s way too easy (and perfectly understandable) to lose perspective by becoming lost in your own world. And when that happens you fail to see either the big picture or the small picture.

The small picture is microscopic – the world that is smaller than us as human beings. There are just over 7 billion humans on the planet – quite a lot I think. However, recent studies suggest that there are between 200 million and 1.2 billion insects for every human on earth. This would mean there are between 1,400,000,000,000,000,000 and 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, or 1.4 – 10 quintillion of the little critters!

But that number pales into insignificance when you consider other (smaller) living things such as phytoplankton or viruses.
And then we can start considering even smaller things like molecules. And the even smaller atomic particles and sub-atomic particles.

The other side of the scale is all the things bigger than ourselves. How big are you (physically) compared to the suburb you live in? Or your city? Your country? The world?

I couldn’t go on along this line without deferring to the Galaxy Song from Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. If you know the tune, sing along as you read the words…

The Galaxy Song (excerpt)
Just remember that you’re standing on a planet that’s evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
That’s orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it’s reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the ‘Milky Way’

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars
It’s a hundred thousand light years side to side
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick
But out by us, it’s just three thousand light years wide

We’re thirty thousand light years from galactic central point
We go 'round every two hundred million years
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe

When you are in the middle of an issue such as when you are running late for an important meeting because the kids have been mucking around, or the traffic is at a standstill due to an accident, or your client was going to do one thing and instead did another, or perhaps you have a flu (man flu or real :-) ) – these problems can become, or seem to become, all encompassing for us – perhaps because we think we are the centre of the universe.

Of course in some respects you are the centre of your own universe, yet in other respects you’re not. One thing for sure though, we are all simply a strand in the tapestry of life – which is pretty enormous.

Human beings are both finite creatures and infinite creatures. We are infinite through our energy, our influence, our souls, the matter we are made of that may change form but can’t be destroyed. We are finite in as much as we live four score and how ever many years (say an average age of 80) which is just 29,200 days / 42,048,000 minutes / 504,576,000 breaths / 2,522,880,000 heartbeats.

At times like this I like to remember we are standing on a planet which is spinning round a star which is just one of a billion, trillion suns in a Universe that’s ninety billion light years side to side!

Stay present and keep breathing…

R U OK?

This blog started off as a reminder about R U OK? Day (more about that below) but it turned into a little bit more as it came out. And of course there is a business lesson in there as well :).

You see, it’s not all “bad”…

When I woke up this morning and looked at the date I was instantly reminded of 9/11 and watching live on TV as those world-changing events occurred. (That was 13 years ago by the way.) Current events in multiple locations around the world are less stable than they have been in perhaps decades (e.g. Ukraine & Syria to name just two). Scotland is threatening succession from the United Kingdom which could throw the world into more financial turmoil. Yesterday I read the headline that ASIO is set to raise the terror warning to its highest level yet. And today I was reminded that 1 in 5 Australian adults will experience mental illness in the course of a 12 month period.

A year ago all of this would have really depressed me and had me worrying non-stop.
Am I concerned / frustrated / wishing it was otherwise? Absolutely!

Am I depressed and worrying? No.
So what has changed?

I’m sure you’ve heard the expression before “It’s not your circumstances that matter, but how you respond to them that counts.” And maybe you’ve heard something about “Your thoughts create your reality”?

Well in the last 12 months I have come to really understand this – not just intellectually, but emotionally and energetically as well. My circumstances are by and large the same - but I have had some life experiences and some fabulous teachers along the way that have helped me to perceive my reality somewhat differently.

I won’t try and summarise all the learning I’ve had, courses I’ve attended, books I’ve read and videos I’ve watched, but I will mention 3 of the influential authors I’ve read - Michael Neill, Joe Dispenza and Michael Singer - that have been instrumental in changing my thinking in recent times. I am most grateful however for my dear friend and collaborator Joanne Antoun for what she has shown me about mindfulness and living peacefully.

Joanne has a wonderful perspective on life balance and finding peace and stillness in everyday life. One of her strongest messages is that the feeling of peace and contentment shouldn’t be a place that you visit but a way of life. So “escaping” the stress of daily life is actually a strange concept, because it will still be there when you get back from wherever you go – be it yoga class, meditation, gym or even a holiday. It’s not that these are bad things – far from it – but as she says “People have fooled themselves into believing that stress and overwhelm is a part of life, but it’s okay as long as you give yourself a break or meditate in the morning and do yoga in the evenings. It’s ridiculous. Why would you just visit that place of peace when you can live there 24/7?

You see “stress” and “overwhelm” are just feelings which are created purely from our perception of an experience – in other words what we think about it. So, as you are in control of your thoughts, nothing has any meaning other than the meaning you give it. Without your input it means nothing.

Don’t believe that? Well consider rain. To a bride on her wedding day it’s a disaster, to a farmer during drought, it’s a blessing. But at the end of the day it is still simply rain.

So living a life of peace is as simple as making a choice, and then making that choice enough times until it becomes your truth - your only option. Understanding this has certainly impacted me, but there are ripples into other areas of my life including my family and of course my clients.

And the business lesson? Well anyone who has ever worked in a business knows that the owner or CEO either defines or has a massive impact on the culture, performance and general state of health of the business. So the more balanced, peaceful and present they are, the more the business will benefit as a result.

So why is this relevant today of all days? Well today is National R U OK? Day.

The R U OK? Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to encouraging all people to regularly and meaningfully ask “Are you OK?” to support those struggling with life. And isn’t that everyone from time to time?

It’s not always obvious when someone is struggling with life, which is why we need to ask “Are you OK?” throughout the year. So whether you read this email today, tomorrow or next week it doesn’t matter – R U OK? Day should really be every day.

Asking the question is something we can all do to help make a difference. So take the time to ask “Is anything the matter?”, “How are you feeling?” or “Are you OK?” Then just listen to what they’re saying.

It’s not about passing judgement or fixing problems. Instead it’s about letting the other person know they’re not alone and you’re there for them. If the opportunity is there you might also be able to help them find some peace.

There is power in that very simple question - “Are you OK?”

Are you OK? Please let me know…

David

PS – I had really hoped to get this blog done by the middle of the day, but “stuff happens” and it is now into the evening. But that’s OK!

Is authenticity authentic?

Seth Godin wrote a recent blog with this title that really got me thinking.

The essence of what he said is that the only truly authentic version of you is a newborn infant. After that, due to a series of cultural overlays, choices and strategies from you and others about what it takes to succeed in this (your) world, everything you portray to the world is all invented.

Godin is usually right on the money with his observations, but I think this time he has it wrong.

Authenticity lies in your Soul, your Essence, your Seed, your Spirit, your Higher Self - whatever you want to call it. And despite the multiple layers placed upon it by time, environment, upbringing, culture, education, family circumstances etc., it is still there.

Your task is to access it. In fact, that is a key part of the journey you are on called “life”.

In other words, it’s about firstly uncovering that kernel of who you are and what you are here for, and then living a life that supports that Higher Purpose. It’s about uncovering that precious seed that resides in your innermost garden and nurturing it so that it flourishes. It’s about discovering your Soul Goals and bringing those into your everyday life. It’s about aligning your passion, purpose and prowess in that special way that is beneficial for everyone.

Often that can involve a Higher Purpose Business, but that isn’t essential. However, living a Higher Purpose Life is.

On reflection some of the questions that might come up for you could include:

Am I living the life I really, really want - versus the life I am “expected” to lead?

Am I living my true purpose?

Do I feel the way I want to feel?

Is that enough?

Is there really anything else?

Who is it really that is asking these questions?

There are many ways to seek out the answers to these questions - and some of them can take a lifetime. That’s OK by the way, but wouldn’t it be much easier to be able to uncover your answers in an instant of enlightenment?

That’s why the amazing Joanne Antoun & I have combined to bring you an evening of transformation to help you do exactly that. We’ve called it Transform Your Life & Your Business - and that is the promise – that no matter what your circumstances are right now, in just over 3½ hours we will guide you to:

Uncover your soul goals and clarify your purpose

Reclaim and step into your personal power

Feel peace, joy, happiness and contentment right now

Understand how you can manifest your heart’s desires

Start the process of creating a life you love

Here are all the details and the links to reserve a seat:

John Lennon said, “There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance … Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”

I do hope you can join us for what will be a magic experience.
And if you can’t, have fun exploring anyway :)

I’m sure you’ve heard about the fear of missing out or FOMO. It’s where we over consume, overcommit, or generally overdo something because we can’t bear thinking we might miss out on something. It’s like going to a buffet where you appear to have unlimited choice of food. How much do you put on your plate? Do you go back again…and again…until you physically can’t eat any more? Or do you select the things that you think you’d particularly like or want – and in quantities that will satiate you (but no more)?

The over-consumption inherent in FOMO has also been driven by the “conspicuous consumption” seen for many decades now – typified in “keeping up with the Joneses” and the need to have the “latest and greatest” gadgets.

However, it does all seem to be catching up in a push to slow the pace of life, get off the treadmill and just simplify the way we live. This new trend is called JOMO – The Joy of Missing Out. It’s all about unplugging from modern life and escaping that modern disease of overwhelm that comes from over-consumption.

JOMO appears to be a move towards more “mindful living” with more and more people actively trying to shut out distractions and focus on the moment. For example, taking a “social media holiday” is becoming more and more prevalent. This is in stark contrast to the need some people have to post every second of their life for all and sundry to see.

Although we embrace technology and all the wonderful things it can do for us, it also has a tendency to not allow us to switch off. Thus we now see many more people taking classes in meditation and mindfulness in their search for peace and to find work-life balance.

It might be a reflection of my stage of life, but I’m absolutely certain that there has also been a big energetic shift that coincided with the lead up to 2012 and now beyond.

JOMO is also related to the new push for authenticity i.e. be yourself and do the things you want to do, when you want to, with whom you want to and not worry what the rest of the world thinks. It’s about living a fulfilled life – and that is different for every single one of us. It’s about enjoying what you’re doing in the here and now and not concerned with being on social media to broadcast it. Neither would you be tracking what everybody else is doing.

Who knows, even the Millenials might catch on and not focus on full-time, real-time connectivity and instant gratification?

And here’s the bonus - as more and more people self-develop and self-actualise there has been a recognition that “off-time” is actually a good business strategy as well!

It’s half past January

I have a very unusual clock on my wall.

It only has one hand.

That hand takes a full twelve months to rotate just once.

It’s an annual clock that tells time in seasons, marking the Equinoxes & Solstices throughout the year.

And so it’s half-past January.

The clock has a name too – it’s called The Present. I purchased it as a prototype via a Kickstarter campaign by Scott Thrift. It’s “all about time” and the idea behind the clock is to remind you to live in the present moment.

Have you ever felt like time is moving too fast? Or perhaps you have trouble being “in the moment” for longer than a few seconds?

The present is the gift we give ourselves.

I didn’t really get what was meant by “living in the present” until an embarrassingly short time ago, despite having been on a self-development journey for some 50-odd years. But now I do, I can’t think of any other way to live.

Sure, we need to learn from the past, but we can’t dwell or live there. And of course we need to plan for the future, but we can’t live there either. We can’t change the past, nor can we pre-determine the future. The only place we can truly live is in the present.

It’s all about mindset.

And that’s why Soul Goals are so critical as a guide for how to live your life. There’s a bit more to it than this, but we can learn from our past where our passions and purpose lie, do a full sensory visualisation of their fulfilment in the future, and then live today exactly as if they were already happening.

If you want to know more about Soul Goals you can download The Quickfire Guide To Creating Soul Goals here with my compliments.

So what do I do on a daily basis to remind myself about living in the present?

At the beginning of this year I started a Happiness Jar. Every morning for the last 6 months, part of my ritual to start the day is to ask what it was that gave me the most joy on the previous day. I write that on a piece of paper, fold it up and place it in my Happiness Jar. At some point in time, maybe at the end of the year or perhaps if I’m feeling a bit blue, I’ll dip into the jar and remind myself of some of the daily pieces of joy that have been present in my life. Interestingly, just seeing the jar filling up makes me happy by itself. In fact I was particularly chuffed when I had to buy a bigger jar because the original one was overflowing!

I also start every day by reminding myself of the answers I have worked out to the questions

Who am I?

Why am I here? &

How do I want to feel today?

These answers help me focus on behaving in alignment with my Soul Goals throughout the day, which means of course that I’m living in the present in alignment with how I have envisioned my future and as taught to me by my past.

So when I look at my clock on the wall and notice that it is half-past January, I am full of gratitude for the experience of having spent the last 6 months being as present as I can.

Hug someone today – anyone! (Hint: It’s good for business)

I really enjoy a good hug. To be truly satisfying it’s got to be a “nestle in, breathe deeply and give a gentle squeeze” type hug. One of those perfunctory “in and out, slap the back” type hugs just doesn’t cut it for me.

I’ve found that most people enjoy my hugs and I enjoy giving them. It’s easy when I’m hugging my wife or my dog – I keep going till they squirm out of it! However, how long is the “right” length hug for friends, children and acquaintances?

The average length of a hug between two people is approximately 3 seconds. That’s OK – and certainly better than no hug at all - however hardly in the “When will this stop and how do I get away?!?” category.

But here’s the thing…if you can manage to extend a sincere hug for 20 seconds it has an amazing therapeutic effect on the body and mind due to the release of the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin has many benefits in our physical and mental health. Amongst other effects, it is calming and
helps you to relax and feel safe.

Perhaps you remember seeing a video in 2006 of a man who gave away free hugs? I especially remember it because he did it in the Pitt Street Mall in Sydney and it created great controversy. It was called the Free Hugs Campaign and at first it was actually banned by officials until popular protest changed that.

The person behind it all was Juan Mann and his sole mission was to reach out and hug a stranger to put a smile on their face. What we witnessed was the true spirit of humanity as people came together in what can only be described as something awe inspiring and the effects of the Free Hugs Campaign are now felt around the globe. The video has had over 75 ½ million views! (See it and read more about it at http://www.freehugscampaign.org/)

In this age of social-disconnection most all of us lack that simple human touch from another. During some stimulating conversation at a recent Womens Network Australia lunch the topic of networking came up. What was agreed all round is that the all too common practice of collecting as many business cards as possible was a waste of time. What is important are genuine connections & relationships.

And what better way to cement a relationship than with a hug?

$23,000 Business Scholarship Opportunity

In fact 2 blogs ago I wrote about exactly that. The key point I’ve been making is that the only person who should define what success means to you – is you. It’s not about following someone else’s agenda or even the standards that society portrays as necessary for you to be successful (you know – the career, the car, the house, the boat, the travel, the lifestyle etc.)

In recent months this has become more and more clear to me as I do work in the areas of Passion, Purpose and Profits.

This has involved 4 key activities:

1)      Continuing to coach amazing women business owners in building a Higher Purpose Business;

2)      Writing the Quickfire Guide to Soul Goals, the Discovery Manual and Worksheets in collaboration with my client and friend Lauren Jobson;

3) Further development of my unique programme called Aligning Passion, Purpose and Profit; and

4) Doing my very best to live my own words.

It all revolves around uncovering, rediscovering or confirming your passion, purpose, vision and values - because that is where your genius and your magnificence lies.

So where do you find your answers?

It’s found in your truth and your authenticity – your seed DNA.

The clues are found in what you feel compelled to do, where you feel connected and where you feel joy.

And the pathway to these (your Purpose) are your Soul Goals.

With this clarity and focus of vision you can then unlock your magnificence and leverage your definition of success by building a Higher Purpose Life and/or Business around that!

“Life will only make sense; and can only produce long-term happiness, peace and joy when embraced from the perspective of the soul”

Neale Donald Walsch

The Quickfire Guide to Creating Soul Goals was created by Lauren & I because both of us are passionate about helping people to be the best possible versions of themselves and it is a given that the goals that really count are the goals from your Soul.

With over 30 years of collective experience and research distilled inside, it’s a very unique guide - simple, easy to commit to and a very powerful process.

We have decided to offer this as a gift to you because we think that it might resonate with you.

It’s not just a guide on how to create goals from your Soul, but what we hope is an introduction to something much bigger for you - a fulfilling life that revolves around your Higher Purpose.

The Quickfire Guide to Creating Soul Goals will help you to understand in no time at all…

What is a Soul Goal

Why they are so important

How to create your own

Don’t get me wrong - I’m not complaining as we do need the precipitation after the warmest Australian Spring on record (2013) and a hot, dry and above average temperature Summer. This isn’t just my imagination either as you’ll see on the rainfall deficiency graph on the Bureau of Meteorology website.

I just find it interesting that the rain hasn’t come in gentle soaking showers. Instead we seem to end up having steamy days with ultra-high humidity which end in a biblical-like deluge for an hour or two which causes flash flooding, traffic chaos and general disruption. I’m talking 40-80mm of rain in an hour or so! Hang on – I think I’m describing Queensland weather…

My friend has told me that I’m a weather nerd – hmmm, maybe she’s right :)

It’s almost like the heavens have said “Let’s focus on this spot, right here, right now, and we’ll get a lot done in a short time.”

Isn’t that a great word? (i.e. focus) And doesn’t it have some great lessons for us as well?

Named after the Italian civil engineer and economist Vilfredo Pareto, The Pareto Distribution – more commonly known as the Pareto Principle - is a probability distribution used in the description of social, scientific, geophysical, actuarial, and many other types of observable phenomena. For example, in business 80% of the output comes from 20% of the input, 20% of the staff do 80% of the work, 20% of the sales will yield 80% of the profit, and so on. So the lesson is to focus on the 20%!

The Ancient Chinese Philosophy of Wu Xing teaches us a great deal about energy management, ease and effectiveness by simply focussing activities of similar energy together. (Blaze, Earth, Steel, Water and Wood energies correspond to people, organising, clearing, source and creative activities)

And when we group or batch work of a similar nature together, this focus allows you to build momentum and “get in the groove”, the “zone” or “flow”. For example, in a manufacturing environment it can help minimise changeovers. Or if you are preparing invoices, doing them all at the same time is an efficient way to go.

I also love that the word FOCUS is an acronym for Follow One Course Until Successful!

The principle of focus is from where my concept for Fire Hose Sessions came.

Have you ever seen a fire hose that is spraying water all over the place because it isn’t being held everything gets a bit wet but not much is achieved?

However when the fire hose is directed at one point the concentrated spray soaks the object of attention very quickly.

Well that’s what a Fire Hose Session is all about. I help you hold the hose and concentrate attention on your burning issue of the moment - making a very real difference in an incredibly short period of time. Please get in touch if you’d like to know more.

Meanwhile, back to my rain radar :)

It is very personal...

I’m not sure if you were in the loop or not but yesterday was International Happiness Day.

This is one of the newer “International Days” (and there are quite a few of them!) being only 2 years old. It was proclaimed by the United Nations to recognise the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world, as well as the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives.

What I really loved was the message from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

“Happiness may have different meanings for different people. But we can all agree that it means working to end conflict, poverty and other unfortunate conditions in which so many of our fellow human beings live.”

Isn’t that great? Official recognition that happiness is personal! It seems so obvious really, but how often have you allowed your happiness to be determined by what other people think?

It’s the same with success – it is also personal. Rather than being defined by what your family, your friends, the media or broader society thinks it should be for you, you have the right to determine what success means for you.

And this is where it gets really interesting…

How do you know what success really means for you when at one end of the scale you’ve been indoctrinated or brainwashed, and at the other end of the scale influenced or biased towards everything you’ve ever seen or heard, largely on mainstream media, press and social media?

The answer lies within, not without. It lies inside your passions and your purpose, both of which are housed inside you – in your heart and in your soul.

So the simple secret in finding out what success means for you is to uncover your Soul Goals.

How do you do that? The answer to that is coming very soon…

It’s World Voice Day on 16th April – so why should you care?

If you’ve ever fully lost your voice or perhaps had a cold that has severely restricted your vocal use, you’ll know just how frustrating it is to function in your everyday life when you can’t make a sound. We use our voices to communicate with each other, to laugh, cry, sing and even scream. There isn’t really much you do in your daily life that doesn’t involve the use of your voice in some way shape or form. And all of this comes from a tiny organ about the size of a stamp.

I have been accused in the past of being paranoid about keeping my distance from people with obviously contagious ailments that could affect my voice. It’s true – I even carry a spare face mask in the “emergency kit” in my bag. But this is perfectly understandable because as a presenter, facilitator, coach and singer etc., my voice is one of my main tools of the trade and a key asset. (I also carry a spare green tea teabag, multi-coloured pen, nail clippers and band-aid in case you were wondering!)

Now whilst World Voice Day is focussed on raising our awareness to the importance of having a physically healthy voice, it did also make me think about our metaphoric voice - in other words, our purpose, our mission, our destiny, our calling, our genius, our life’s work or our legacy. These are all embraced in something I have described recently as our Soul Goals.

We all have an audience - whether this is a small audience such as your family or your company, a bigger audience such as your community or your country, or an enormous audience such as the world. What determines your audience will be your Soul Goals.

Your Soul Goals are unlikely to be money or possessions. They may be things you want to do. Almost certainly they will incorporate the person you want to be. One thing is for sure though, you will be called to them – by your Heart, your Soul, your Spirit Guides, your Higher Self, your God, the Universe…

If you listen you will hear. The problem is most of us don’t listen - or we haven’t been taught how! Or can we even hear it anyway?

Your Soul’s voice starts off quite subtle with whispers and suggestions, but if you ignore it the voice has to get louder and louder. And if you ignore it altogether it may end up hitting you over the head with a piece of metaphoric 4 x 2 plank. These are the things you end up calling your biggest “life lessons”.

Often you will hear the message from your Soul but then override it with what you think you “should” do. These thoughts are generally based on someone else’s values which you have adopted for some reason or another. It might even have it’s origins in the subconscious parental programming you received when you were an infant.

Or perhaps you have allowed your Ego’s voice to be louder than your Soul’s voice? This is so easy to do in a scientific world where the power of your mind or intellect is more important than the messages from our feelings or intuition. Thankfully this is changing!

Let me give you a couple of concrete examples of this. Your Soul doesn’t wants to stop hanging out with the friend you’ve known for twenty years, but your Ego says that you just have to – and you end up resenting the person and the time. Or your intuition tells you not to do business with a certain person but your mind justifies why you should – and it turns out badly.

I have found that the secret lies in being authentic and truthful to yourself. It lies in uncovering what is the true spirit of your work. So how do you do this? The answer to that is too long for this short blog, but you could start by looking at the following questions:

What makes you come alive and reminds you of who you are?

What do you love to talk about, learn about, and/or teach others about?

What makes you feel great about yourself?

What are you doing when your heart sings?

What topic would your TED talk be on?

As JV Crum said:

“By paying attention to what is in your heart – the authentic ways you want to help others, then expressing these in your business purpose – you will not only make a powerful difference, you will create your highest profits.”

BHAGs and MPOGs

I was driving into the city and traffic being what it was, we were crawling along. I happened to look out the side window and saw the name of the street we were passing – Beehag Avenue. Even though I have driven that way many, many times before it was the first time I’d noticed the name.

My thoughts went straight to the concept of BHAG – a Big Hairy Audacious Goal. Do just about any goal setting programme and you’ll be encouraged to set a BHAG. Why? Because the Big Hairy Audacious Goal is literally magic.

The BHAG serves to inspire you. This is much, much more than motivation. The BHAG is linked to your soul, your higher purpose, your reason for existence. It allows you to overcome obstacles like procrastination, fear and overwhelm. It allows you to persevere when others would quit. To get up off the floor just one more time when you’ve been knocked over by your circumstances. It gives you your big “why?” and in this perspective your “why?” is much more important than the “how?”

Coincidentally I recently came across the concept of an MPOGS – a Monumental Project Of Great Significance - in a blog by Alexandra Franzen. I just loved it because it is also very much aligned to Soul Goals. An MPOGS is defined as a project that:

-       You can really sink your teeth into;

-       Will dramatically improve a lot of people’s lives;

-       Will force you to grow and stretch;

- Will leave a legacy of which you can be deeply proud.

Whilst a BHAG or MPOGS might not be the same as your purpose or your mission, it really should be on purpose or on mission to be truly inspirational. Motivation is great, but inspiration will give you energy whilst you stay up late and/or get up early.

I’m inspired by helping people – most especially women – to uncover (or rediscover) their passion, purpose, vision and values and building a Higher Purpose Business based on that. So naturally my MPOGS revolves around that too – it’s about bringing soul to business and business to soul.

What’s your BHAG or MPOGS?

How to Achieve Your Best

Achieving your best is a personal thing. In the same way that success for you really should be defined by your lifestyle, family, financial and other goals – rather than what society says success “should” be – being “your best” works the same way. And from a work perspective this applies whether we are considering being your best in your business or someone else’s business.

We know that measuring success simply by material possessions isn’t very holistic. Clearly there are other very personal things like health, happiness, peace and love that count as much or more.

And if we fall into the trap of defining “achieving your best” as how close we can get to being the “perfect” man or woman” i.e. being the perfect provider, parent, carer, partner, friend or even global change agent, we go down the same slippery slope of unrealistic standards and expectations (cue Superman or Superwoman Syndrome).

So what is the secret to achieving your best when it is so different for everyone? I think Leonardo da Vinci was on to something when he said “Make your work to be in keeping with your purpose.”

In every person is planted the seed and the capability to make a difference. This seed is your purpose, mission, calling, genius or life’s work… And when you say yes to your calling and start taking the appropriate action, you attract the resources so you can keep doing it.

There is a revolution happening right now – the “Greed is Good” mantra of Gordon Gecko is now very hollow. There is a definite shift in global consciousness and awareness - away from greed, win/lose competition and accumulating for accumulation’s sake towards authenticity, integrity, compassion, connection and being of service. Everyone is part of this shift, some more conscious of it than others.

Within this context work stops being “work” and becomes simply the way you want to spend your time. It inspires you, gets you up earlier and keeps you up later because it revolves around your personal values and aspirations. It also tends to be the place where you exhibit your genius. It frees you up to work on the areas of weakness that are holding you back and it also helps you play to your strengths so you can work in your sweet spot - to get into flow. This is the place where you can achieve your best.

And working at your heart’s desire, at the best you have to give, will often be your greatest source of profitability - financial, emotional and spiritual. How much more personal can you get?

Here are my Top 3 specific strategies to be your best:

Resist the urge to be a “Superperson” and trying to live up to someone else’s unrealistic standards.

Keep a holistic attitude about being your best and about success. It’s all very personal. If in doubt, see #1 again.

Invest in your growth. Get a mentor / coach / advisor, ideally someone who understands you but is also different from you. Also look for people who are further down the same track that you can learn from, model and be inspired by. Remember, the definition of a blind spot is that you can’t see it! Having someone to show you the way really helps.

(When I say at our place it obviously wasn’t just our place but it does sound more dramatic that way!)

My wife and I both heard lots of things rattling and flapping through the night, but we didn’t hear the big bang some time in the early morning. The wind had caught the big canopy umbrella and lifted it out of its slot so it toppled and fell on to the glass-topped outdoor table. The table subsequently shattered into a million bits…

On the grass!

OK, so I wasn’t happy about the table. And the umbrella wasn’t in too good shape either. But to have that amount of glass sitting on the grass was a bit of a disaster. It was a bit like this except the table was about twice the size. And did I mention it was on the grass?

So it had to be cleaned up as soon as possible. We can wear shoes but the dog can’t.

There were some big chunks (which tended to crumble when touched) but mostly tiny bits from the safety glass, sinking into the too long grass. I thought briefly about using the mower to pick it all up but quickly ruled that out as not my smartest idea ever.

It was a huge task and somewhat daunting, so I decided to start at edges and pick up small sections at a time. It was slow going but as I worked away I started to think about the task in relation to other big challenges – such as building a business. The parallels were very interesting:

I worked slowly and carefully, not looking at whole situation (which was somewhat demoralising), just the section in front of me. But I knew why I was doing it and what I was aiming for so that kept me quite motivated (GOALS).

I had a small cup into which I placed the pieces I had picked up. (Did I mention they were small and there were about a million of them?) With each full cup I got a strange sense of satisfaction at having achieved something tangible (MILESTONES).

Occasionally I’d look up and see what had been achieved and was pleasantly surprised (REVIEW).

I had to work in a position that wasn’t the most comfortable (kneeling) and I got small cuts on a reasonably regular basis. So I was sure to take breaks when I felt myself getting a bit careless or tired, avoiding the risk of doing too much damage (RISK MITIGATION).

Eventually I was able to get some support from my son in the large task which made it so much easier (TEAMWORK).

Finally we brought the vacuum cleaner to the party and literally sucked up the glass fragments. (I’m sure it wasn’t the best for the vacuum but I figured it was used to picking up dirt anyway). That way we were able to really move things along and make it easier to get all the tiny bits (TECHNOLOGY).

I love how there are business and life lessons all around us :-)

Over the Christmas break I decided to start a business…

Every January and February I hear the words “over the Christmas break I decided to start a business.” And whilst it makes my heart sing to see the enthusiasm of new entrepreneurs, I also have some trepidation.

Many people start a business for exactly the right reason. These include a burning desire to create their own “thing”, needing more flexibility (especially with the kids now at school), being sick of working for a boss, having a million dollar idea or simply wanting to make the world a better place. Sometimes it’s that someone has said “You’re really good at that – you should go into business.”

We have all heard the advice that “you should focus on what you are good at doing”. This is pretty sound and I have no issue with it – however there is more…

In addition to doing what you are good at there should be an overlap with what you love. I’ve seen way too many people who are extremely good at something and so pursue that as a vocation or a business, but end up hating it because it doesn’t light them up. For example, I know a great accountant who’d love to be a property developer and a restaurant manager who’d love to be a naturopath. My favourite though is the Monty Python “Vocational Guidance Counsellor” take on it – see it here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMOmB1q8W4Y

For these people their lives only begin after work.

Even more significantly, the intersection of what you do well and what you love is invariably your passion - and may even be your purpose. Working at your passion and purpose is truly inspiring and a prerequisite if you want a successful business.

But there is even more…

Even if you are absolutely brilliant at whatever it is, passion and purpose alone are not enough. The world must also need what it is you do or make. Without that you’ll end up with a garage full of stuff that no one wants.

Or even worse – you’ve done your research and established a genuine need, only to find out that the world won’t pay for it! And without this you certainly don’t have a business.

For example, I don’t know about you, but on the odd occasion when I make an egg sandwich, I’ve been frustrated at being unable to line up the egg slices with the edge of the sliced bread. So when I came across the boiled egg squarer (that produces cube-shaped boiled eggs) I was definitely tempted – but not that tempted to buy one.

You could say the same for Pet Rocks (popular in the 1970’s). What a great idea, but who really needs a pet rock? What products do you have lying around that you saw a great need for at the time but in hindsight really wish you hadn’t bought? Let me know and I’ll publish a list so we can all laugh with each other…

So yes, build a business around your passion and your purpose, but also make sure to do the research to establish both a need and a want.

Have a great week,

David

PS - Just to confirm, no, I don’t have boiled egg squarer, though I do have lots of other “useful” junk! But that’s the subject of another blog :)

PPS – Over Christmas I successfully beta tested a brand new programme I have developed called Aligning Passion Purpose & Profits. It’s perfect for uncovering or rediscovering your passion and purpose, and helping you to clarify how that can be channeled into your version of a successful business and life. Give me a call or you can get more info herehttp://bit.ly/1inJ3rQ

It makes sense to spend some time observing our blessings with gratitude and also listening to the messages life sent us during the year – else we end up repeating the same things next year!

It also makes sense to visualise how you would like the ensuing year to unfold. Call it goal setting, planning or dreaming – if you don’t determine where you want to go, you probably won’t get anywhere near there.

One of the best focussing tools I’ve used for the last few years is called Word of The Year (WoTY).

This is not the Word of The Year we see in various social press that is used to describe the year that was. Rather, it is a word you determine at the beginning of the year to help you keep focussed on what is important to you.

You may have a WoTY for business and one for personal, or you may combine both areas of your life. It may be an action word or possibly a qualitative descriptor. Some examples are:

GROWTH ENERGY PEACE HEALTH

COURAGE LOVE FINISH BALANCE

ACTION RELEASE PURPOSE PASSION

SALES TEAMWORK PROFITABILITY SERVICE

As much as I see tremendous value from this concept and having used it successfully for 3 years at least, in reflecting on my WoTY for next year I realised that there is also a trap with this. Specifically, that you can potentially hang on to your WoTY for too long.

For example, say your WoTY was “RELEASE”. This is a good strategy i.e. you may need to let go of some old things in order to make room for the new. However, if you were to keep focussing your energy on the things you wanted to release for too long, you would actually attract more of what it was you wanted to let go!

All the learning around manifestation of desires that I have done in recent years says that you should focus on what you want with full sensory and emotional commitment. What will hold you back from creating something new will be the process of continually “taking score” of where you are at right now.

So perhaps the solution for some people is to is have a “Word of the Quarter” or a quarterly theme instead of something that lasts a full 12 months. Or to set a review period for your WoTY to make sure it is providing you with what you need and want.

When you choose your WoTY be sure to let your intuition guide you, allowing you subconscious to have input and not to over rationalise it. Choosing your Word of The Year should be very inspiring and can also be tremendous fun. And at the very least it is very focussing.

I’d love to know what word you choose. Please post a quick comment below let me know.

I wish you and your extended family a happy, healthy and abundant holiday season, as well as a 2014 where you can align your passion, your purpose and your profits.
