It started with an idea and now its finished! Isn't this a great way to kick start a meal. The progression after the top cut outs were fused on was to sew them onto the background with a light batting underneath and then cut it away. Next I layered another light batting between the top and a background and quilted it. Can you see the extra depth that double bat layer under the flowers and leaves give it. It feels so rich and firm. Then I thought I would audition some plates on it to see how I liked the size. Perfect, as it works well with the regular sized dinner plates and the bit smaller ones. Next I put a border on it and took a photo on the DR table. Its a perfect 13 x 19 inches in size and now I am picturing others to go around the table.

I have a little photography club meeting tomorrow, Its brown bag, and I might take my place mat for my lunch!

Not Your Mothers Place Mat

OK I am starting a new project and just have to tell you about it.

Its NOT YOUR MOTHERS PLACE MAT. A couple weeks ago I was trying to unpack some of my quit stuff from our move and ran across some of my ufo's and laid them on the DR table to re-evaluate. They were so pretty I kept thinking what great place mats they would be, but not so detailed due to wear etc.

Yesterday I dug out some fabric, made a pattern on the freezer paper and set to work with a rough design for a place mat, and at first I decided I would chuck it and quit but I got interrupted. When I came back a few hours later "to chuck the project", I decided to put it on the DR table and take another look and I loved it! Now that must have been a mini burn out on the excitement of the idea - yes? It just has not taken on character yet with extra threads and quilting but when I stood back and looked at it, I was happy.

We sold our house and bought another one in Durant Oklahoma so quilting
has been quiet here. I have gotten my Jacobean blocks sewn but with
all the boxing and packing that project needs to become a UFO for
now. I did order before the sale of the ranch this pattern of Maggie
Walkers "The Blue Collection" but I am doing mine with creams as
background and pomegranate, purples and greens with oranges. Its
coming out amazing with the more pottery look for the pots. All
the squares for the blocks are sewn and ready to work with the back
basting for the needle turn applique. I will post photos soon I hope!
I also found a set of LOTS which is short for Ladies Of The Sea a
pattern by Susan Garman of ships in baltimore style. I do not plan to
do that quilt like the pattern either but hope to take the ships and
make blocks to hang on the wall. The fabric stretched over wood
frames I think will make an impressive wall display. But I may change
my mind before I get to that project. In the mean time, the sewing
machine is packed and escrow to close Dec 22. Should be a wild
and interesting December.

Goldfish, Slice of Life Finished!

Gold fish are so fascinating with all the shapes and colors they come in so it was especially fun to create this tapestry of some fancy goldfish in an aquatic setting. The size is 18 inches wide by 41 inches long. Its done on an ombre graduated fabric with the applique plants and fish done in batik fabrics. Raw Edge applique technique with faux trapunto for extra lift and dimension of the fish and plants. To see more on the construction just go back a few posts to see more. I just love how bright and cheery this is and hope you all like it too! Enjoy...
I used 3 different color of threads for the quilting and I wish the photos showed the dimension of the picture which is raised above the background with the faux trapunto. This is just sitting at 15 inches wide without the border and it so eye catching with all the various colors on that background fabric. I have been wanting to do this for quite some time. One day I ran across this small background fabric and I knew immediately what it would be used for. Just have the little border to finish now. I love these slice's of life! Now at the bottom I have posted the finshed tapestry which measures 14 1/2 inches x 36 inches.

Well, I hated the color for the fan coral so cut another piece of fabric, this is better, plus more rocks, shells and more coral. It all seems so flat without the quilting and thread work and its pretty darn busy. Looking at my photos it is about right, as things do look quite camouflaged and dense.

More and more is added, seaweed and kelp at the bottom. Its a bit awkward putting the small long pieces under and over each other but this seems to really give a good feel of movement and dimension.

Cancer Survivor #3 finished!

The lovely heirloom has come full circle from idea to design to finished quilt tapestry. The finished size with border ended up being 35 1/2 inches x 42 inches, a perfect size for a wall hanging. This is the first Boston Terrier I have ever worked on and she certainly has a personality all her own. A bit prissy among the flowers and ribbons, do you think she wonders if they are taking away her spotlight!
The Dog now has a chest and pink
ribbons are set in the background. The long
stems were added with the flower tops. As
I assemble the parts and fuse them to my
teflon sheet I can then peel off a big section
(as you can see me holding a flower top in
my hand) and place it under the tracing
paper template. Finally the last is fused
in place and I get to see the QT pinned to
the wall. Next to begin quilting the
applique pieces. This should take
is a 4 time breast cancer survivor with her little
boston terrier "Baby" included. These photos
are a WIP (work in progress) and shows the
little 8x10 I am using for my color reference,
my giant cartoon, the tracing paper layer
to help place the pieces and the face of
Baby laying on the fabric.
flowers and all the pink ribbons standing
on their fat loops or the word survivor
that floats above and among it all. Stay tuned
for more wip!
the Pond One thing I just love is the Ombre or
graduated fabric I chose for this piece.
The faux trapunto really enhances
the dimension of the tapestry.
Its offered over at Timeless Dog Studio
on the purchase of this piece.
using some light batting underneath. This I will tear
away to give a faux trapunto effect when I add
another layer of batting and sandwich with the
back. Right now I am auditioning the skinny
slice of pond life with a lovely batik fabric that
seems to really showcase this well. I will
add the last bit when its finished and offer it for
sale on etsy.
The last section will be added in the next couple days!

Its interesting to see how this background is enhancing the pattern.
Quilting this should be a blast!
This is a free style applique with fake trapunto under the dogs so they have extra dimension. The measurement is 22 x 35 inches. I have just the right area to put it! The full layout can be seen on the previous blog post. Enjoy!
This is very different than anything else I have done but I really think the back ground fabric dictated the direction of this layout. I love the way it feels like dusk is coming on and the dogs are still competing. As most of us know in the dog world we often are just under the wire as evening settles in as the field finishes. I will add more as this progresses. So if you happen to get a chance to enter the AKC National Lure Coursing trial in TX this year in December this could be yours.

Audition of fabrics

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; My idea is to give it a bit of bling with a Laurel Birch effect (with luck), and then add foliage around it at some point.

The Winner Will Receive This Quilt

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I am not allowed to change it so this makes
creating something vertical hanging a bit
of a challenge. I could put some writing above and below the running hounds or its been suggested
rabbits around it but I can not get a visual in my mind yet. So its still being contemplated...Sigh. The NLCC
will be hosting the American Kennel Club's National Coursing event in Texas this year in the cold month of December so I feel like I have a bit of time yet, but not much! I envision a rabbit master with a score book and a pen standing tall behind these dogs in a cartoon sort of way. Maybe the letters for the club made to look like the ground they are running on. What a hard commission this is.
This project was really an escape into my art while the world was crashing around me and alot of pain from my fibro and osteoarthritus. Many breaks to walk away and come back to work taking me through the cold winter and freezing temps into spring and light. Enjoy.

Pileated Woodpeckers

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; So many birds to choose from. I thought the Pileated Woodpeckers would be fun with their squabbling over territory and grapes. The first picture here is just the quilt top finished with all the pieces fused in place. Later I will begin to sew in detail of the feathers and leaves with their veins and foliage detail.

Here is a close up of the bird on the left. I had a hard time collecting lots of different hues of blacks and greys but with the thread work when quilting that will all become more defined.

This bird on the right was the first head I did, as I worked from the top down to the bottom of the tails and grape leaves. This is what painting with fabric is like.

This is a crop of the quilt top as it probably will be close to how it will look once it has a slim border. The height is about 36 inches and should be a handsome wall hanging. I hope to finish it sometime in March of 2011.

Goldie the Goldfish

Goldie has been a long time waiting for fabric to meet pattern. Susan Carlson who has inspired me to think outside the box has this pattern on her website. It is not numbered but its easy and fun to make tracing the pattern onto the fabric to fill in the spaces. I actually did a lot of this fish with fusible webbing and the head and gills with cut scraps and glue. The edges of this fish were left unglued so scraps of cut fabric could be slid under the fish and glued down, and this created for me, lots of images of refracted water where a goldfish might live.

Once I squared up my design I cut with my scallop rotary cutter some edging which I glued as a border. Yep, I glued it and I gotta say, for this piece it looks perfect. The cut edges for the background stick out and are not totally stitched down which was a bit odd for me, but with it finished I actually like the effect. I guess this is because I did not get enough glue on them, but they are all stitched and its all random quilting with Sulky clear thread.
My finished size is 14x30 inches and the pattern is now in the finishing stage as well. The fusing and placement were not that difficult if you are an experienced applique person and this finished up rather fast. The flowers and the cloth the vase sit on can be open to interpretation and variations could be stunning.
   Enjoy!
