Here’s recent news from the Manila radio ministry we help lead. This is a pic from the big launch party for the new theedge.ph megablog. It was a gala event!

CBN covered it, as well as a number of Christian bloggers. Plus, friends of the edge showed up at the studios to party! We have 2 DJ’s spinning that night: one from London and another from Manila. The entire event was webcast for four hours on the live video stream. Congrats to Owie and Rory for their diligence and truly hard work in launching a world-class blog to drive the ministries main web presence. Check out the site at theedge.ph

After a year of waiting on the Lord his pastor told him about a conversation he had had with me that week about my burden to start Christian youth radio for the Philippines. From the moment we met we both knew this would be a great partnership. With Ron’s experience and the support of UCB International, we promptly launched The Edge Radio in a small room at the seminary. Gradually the ministry grew into its own truly cool studios and became a national network with high power FM’s, publishing and netcasting. This year UCB Philippines celebrated its 5th anniversary and launched a new website.

We are so proud to have Ron and Joyce with us this week at MediaLight to share their years of experience in radio broadcasting. Rock on!

Today the Sun, even at high noon is totally blocked. Can’t even tell where it is in the sky (see the last photo).

No, it’s not cloud cover, its the smoke from slash and burn farmers just over the border in Myanmar (Burma) 50 miles away. Their mountains are ablaze as a way of clearing the land for Spring planting of small crops. So much smog! Asthmatics beware.

Brooke joined Travis as a fire blower and did six sets of fire tricks in the night’s program. Here she makes quite an impact on a little girl standing with her mom. If you have never seen anyone do this up close it is quite impressive. Paul Richardson said that the definition of an event is “when you cause a traffic problem and people call the cops because cars are parked everywhere.” We weren’t quite there but we did have one lane of the street blocked with the crowd we were able to gather.

He unleashed creativity in the students and helped raise their competence and confidence. Under his oversight students completed a 12 minute institutional video for Family Learning Center school to help them raise the funds they need for their new buildings.

Then the students flew solo and produced two TV commercials for local businesses with no help. Most of them had never touched a camera before coming to school. Both commercials really show how far their skills have developed in only seven weeks.

Paul, thanks for your humor, your transparency and your belief in the talents of the students. See ya next session!

He wobbled a bit but made it without too much damage. Not long afterward I could sit in the shade and watch him charging down the hill enjoying the rush and the speed.

That’s pretty much where we are with our MediaLight students now. In the first week my main message was: “Do NOT drop these cameras!” But now we don’t worry about those things. These kids know what they are doing and can be trusted. Their skill is growing with every project. Click here for Sherry’s photos of the last two weeks.
