What information should you include at the top of your website’s front page?

The “above-the-fold” is the area of a website page you can see without scrolling. This use to be very important when everyone was searching the internet on a desktop.

The above-the-fold area of your website’s front page holds great importance in capturing visitors’ attention and encouraging them to take action. While the concept of above-the-fold has evolved with the rise of various screen sizes and devices, it remains crucial to create an impactful first impression. We will explore the key elements that should be included in the prime real estate of your website’s front page. By strategically placing these elements, you can confirm visitors are in the right place, pique their interest, and provide them with the information they seek.

1 – Confirm they are in the right place

Location – Clearly indicate your business’s location or service area. For local businesses, specifying the geographic region in the headline (H1 title tag) above the fold helps visitors immediately identify if they are in the right place. Example: “Tampa Air Conditioning and Heating” – Instantly communicates your services and service area.

Service/Product – Concisely state what you offer. Highlight your core service or product to ensure visitors understand your business’s primary focus.

2 – Pique their interest in learning more

Points of difference – Clearly articulate why visitors should choose your business. Highlight unique selling points, competitive advantages, or the pain points your business can address. Provide a compelling reason for visitors to explore further. Example: Emphasize exceptional customer service, superior expertise, or innovative solutions.

Solution to a pain point – Highlight the specific solutions or benefits your business provides. Address common problems or challenges faced by your target audience to demonstrate that you can meet their needs effectively.

Trust signals – Include trust signals such as positive customer testimonials or impressive Google reviews. These endorsements build credibility and trust in the minds of your visitors, making them more likely to engage further.

3 – Get them the information they want quickly

Clear Calls to Action (CTAs) – Offer two or three distinct CTAs to guide visitors to the information they are seeking. Consider the primary actions your visitors are likely to take and provide direct links or buttons for easy navigation. For instance, an air conditioning website could have CTAs for repair, replacement, and service options.

Contact Information – Ensure that visitors can easily find your contact details. Display your phone number prominently, especially if you handle emergency calls. Consider providing a contact form for those who prefer to reach out online. Make it effortless for visitors to connect with you.

Tailoring Elements to Your Business:

Consider your unique business characteristics and adjust the above-the-fold elements accordingly. If you operate nationwide, omit specific location information. As a new business, focus on other compelling aspects rather than testimonials or reviews.

Design Considerations:

If you have too many things crammed into the top of the page, a user’s eye doesn’t know what to look at. Clean and uncluttered is key.

To create a visually appealing and engaging above-the-fold area, keep the following in mind:

Avoid Busyness: Do not overcrowd the top of your page with excessive content. A clean and uncluttered design helps users focus on the essential elements.

Encourage Scrolling: Provide a glimpse of the next section to indicate that there is more valuable content below. Mobile users are accustomed to scrolling, so take advantage of this behavior to offer helpful content beyond the initial visible area.

By optimizing the above-the-fold area of your website’s front page, you can captivate visitors, convey your value proposition, and guide them to take desired actions. Evaluate your current elements, consider your target audience, and strive for a clean and uncluttered design that encourages engagement. Remember, the above-the-fold area sets the stage for the user experience, so make it count.

Do you have clear Call to Actions on your website? What is the goal of your website, and how are you directing visitors to this goal? Let’s discuss how you can improve your website’s Call to Actions (CTAs) to effectively guide your visitors towards the desired actions.

Purpose of a CTA (Call to Action)

A CTA encourages your website visitors to take a specific action. That might be anything from buying a product to filling out a form to request some information. CTAs are crucial for converting visitors into customers or leads.

Your CTA should:

Grab attention: Use eye-catching design elements such as contrasting colors, bold fonts, or compelling visuals to make your CTA stand out on the page.

Clearly communicate the value proposition: Tell the user what they will get when they click the button. Use persuasive language that highlights the benefits or rewards they will receive by taking the desired action.

Guide the user to the next step: Your CTA should lead visitors to the next step in the sales funnel or customer journey. Whether it’s making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or downloading an ebook, ensure that the CTA aligns with your overall business goals.

CTA color

While there is no “best” color to use for CTAs, using consistent colors with your CTA buttons can help create a visual identity for your brand. Consider the following tips when choosing colors:

Contrast: You don’t want your CTA to blend in with your site’s color palette. Use a contrasting color to help it stand out on the page and grab attention. For example, if your color palette is shades of blue, try using green, yellow, or orange for your CTAs.

Consistency: Be consistent and use the same color for all your CTAs. This helps to clearly identify opportunities to click on the page and reinforces your brand’s visual identity.

Using wording to encourage clicks

The wording you use in your CTAs plays a crucial role in encouraging visitors to take action. Tailor your CTA copy to suit the specific action you want visitors to take, and make sure it conveys the value or benefit they will receive by clicking.

Here are some examples of effective CTA copy:

Get my FREE ebook now

Sign up for the course

Subscribe to my newsletter

Start your Free Trial

Learn More about my consulting services

Book an Appointment

Buy Now

Request a FREE ebook

Download Your eBook Now

How many CTAs should I use on a page?

The number of CTAs you should use on a page depends on the purpose of the page and your goal. Here are some guidelines to consider:

One clear CTA
There are situations when focusing on one CTA is best. For example, if you have a page describing the benefits of a product, you probably only want to offer a BUY NOW button on the page. You are convincing them to purchase the product, and you want their next step to be buying it. You can place your CTA button in several places on the page, but you are still offering one “next step” option.

Multiple CTAs
Sometimes you need to give visitors a few choices. However, try not to offer more than 2 or 3 choices. You may have several CTAs because you have several types of visitors on your site or people at different stages of the buying cycle. Some might be ready to buy, and some might need more information. In such cases, make sure the CTAs are clearly differentiated based on the visitor’s needs and stage in the buying process.

What is your Next Step? Where do you want visitors to go?

Consider the 6 stages of the buying process when deciding what type of CTAs to include on a page. Your website should guide visitors through a logical path of pages that end with your goal. Here are the 6 stages of the buying process:

Awareness: The visitor becomes aware of a problem or need.

Research: The visitor gathers information and explores available options.

Consideration: The visitor evaluates different solutions or products.

Decision: The visitor is ready to make a purchase decision.

Purchase: The visitor completes the purchase process.

Post-Purchase: The visitor engages with your product or service after the purchase.

For pages providing detailed information on your product or service (steps #2-#4), your next step may be to send them to a purchase page or a place to schedule a service. Aligning your CTAs with the appropriate stage of the buying process ensures a smooth customer journey.

Button vs Link CTAs

While internal links are important for SEO and navigation purposes, your main CTA should be a button that stands out. Here’s why:

Buttons stand out better: Buttons with clear labels and design elements attract attention and are more likely to be clicked.

Differentiate the main CTA: By using buttons for your primary CTAs, you can visually distinguish them from other internal links on the page. This helps guide visitors toward the desired action.

Things to check with your website Call to Actions

Analyze your website’s CTAs: Ensure that you have a CTA option for each type of visitor on your site, catering to their specific needs and interests.

Use a contrasting color: Make sure your CTAs stand out by using contrasting colors that catch the eye.

Use persuasive wording: Craft compelling copy that encourages users to click the button and clearly conveys the value they will receive.

Determine the right number of CTAs: Avoid overwhelming visitors with too many choices. Strike a balance by providing a sufficient number of CTAs without causing confusion.

Lead visitors to your goal: Ensure that your CTAs guide visitors to the “next step” that aligns with your business goals and the stage of the buying process they are in.

By following these tips and conducting regular assessments of your CTAs, you can optimize their effectiveness in driving user engagement and achieving your website’s objectives. Remember to always analyze the results and test different variations to continuously improve the performance of your CTAs.

Building internal links on your website is an important part of a SEO strategy

Internal links are hyperlinks that link to other pages on your own site. They serve several purposes, such as helping visitors navigate your site, boosting time on site by leading visitors to other relevant content, and directing people to their next step. Additionally, internal links help search engines understand your site’s structure and signal which pages are most important.

Why are internal links important?

Helps visitors navigate your site

Boosts time on site by leading visitors to other relevant content

Directs people to your “next step”

Helps search engines understand your site’s structure and signals which pages are most important (because there are a lot of links pointing to them)

To effectively build internal links on your website, consider the following tips and best practices:

Use Descriptive Anchor Text

Anchor text is the visible part of the link that users click. Make sure to use anchor text that accurately describes the content of the linked page. For example, instead of using generic phrases like “Click here” or “Learn More,” opt for anchor text that includes relevant keywords or provides a clear idea of what the page is about.
The anchor text in this example is “Purple pony for sale”:

<a href="/purple-pony">Purple pony for sale</a>

Linked Images

If you are using linked images, the image alt tag will be used for the anchor text by search engines.
“Purple Pony for sale” is the anchor text in this example as well.

<a href="https://abc.com/purple-pony"><img src="/purple-pony.jpg" alt="Purple pony for sale"/> </a>

Link Types for SEO Value

Utilize different link types to enhance your SEO efforts. Exact match links use the same keyword phrase as the linked page, while partial match links involve variations or related keywords. It's beneficial to incorporate both types of links to optimize your internal linking strategy.

Avoid Link Types with Little SEO Value

Naked links, which use the actual URL as the anchor text, and generic links like "Click here" should be avoided. These types of links do not provide context to search engines or users about the content they will find when clicking the link. Instead, focus on using descriptive anchor text that aligns with the content/topic of the linked page.

Consider Link Placement

The placement of links within your web pages can affect their perceived importance by search engines. Links in the body of the page, especially in above-fold areas (visible without scrolling), are generally considered stronger than those in the footer or sidebar. Place links where they make sense contextually and provide value to users.

Maintain Relevance

Ensure that the links you include on a page are relevant to the content and topic being discussed. The anchor text should accurately represent the page you are linking to. By maintaining relevance, you enhance the user experience and help search engines understand the context of your website.

Use a Variety of Keyword Phrases

Avoid using the same exact anchor text repeatedly for a specific page. Instead, incorporate several variations of keywords in your anchor text to avoid appearing spammy or suspicious to search engines. This approach also provides a more diverse and natural linking profile.

Mind the Number of Links

While there is no hard and fast rule regarding the number of links per page, it is essential to use them with intention. Avoid filling a page with excessive links that overwhelm visitors. Instead, use internal links to provide additional information on a topic or guide visitors towards your products or services. Focus on guiding visitors towards their end goals, whether it's contacting you, making a purchase, or acquiring more information.

Keep Anchor Text Length Brief

Aim to keep your anchor text as concise as possible. Long anchor text may clutter your content and make it less user-friendly. Focus on using clear and concise phrases that accurately describe the linked page.

Utilize Rich Anchor Text

Rich anchor text incorporates keywords you are targeting to rank for in search results. However, it's crucial to maintain a natural balance and avoid over-optimization. Don't force keywords into your anchor text; instead, ensure it flows naturally within the context of your content.

Use the HTTPS Version of Links

Ensure your internal links use the secure HTTPS version of your website's URLs. By using an SSL certificate and enforcing the HTTPS version, you present a secure and preferred version of your site to both users and search engines. This consistency ensures that all search engine love is directed to your preferred version.

Finding Link Opportunities on Your Website:

You will have pages that only have 1 or 2 internal links and some that have 5-6. Use your best judgement and link to other pages on your site when it makes sense.

If you are using WordPress, you can easily find link opportunities by searching your pages and posts for relevant keywords. Within your WordPress dashboard, navigate to either pages or posts and use the search feature to enter a keyword phrase. Review the search results and identify any opportunities to link to your main content within those pages.

Setting Goals and Taking Action:

Building internal links on your website requires a strategic approach. Set aside dedicated time each week to focus on this task. Evaluate your pages and identify opportunities where internal links can enhance the user experience and improve the structure of your site. By investing time in building internal links, you will improve the overall performance and visibility of your website.

Remember, an effective internal linking strategy not only benefits your SEO efforts but also provides a smoother and more informative user experience.

Reducing the number of fields on a form can drastically improve your conversion rate.

When it comes to website forms, simplicity is key. A long form with too many fields can overwhelm visitors and discourage them from completing the process. In fact, studies have shown that reducing the number of form fields can lead to higher conversion rates. In this article, we will explore the importance of keeping forms concise and provide practical tips to improve the forms on your website.

Consider the following points when evaluating your form fields:

The Impact of Asking Too Many Questions

Forms on your site serve various purposes, such as lead generation, newsletter sign-ups, or contact inquiries. However, bombarding visitors with an excessive number of questions can be counterproductive. It creates a perception that filling out the form requires too much effort, leading to higher abandonment rates.

Asking for Unnecessary Personal Information
When designing your forms, it’s important to consider the type and amount of personal information you request from users. For example, asking for phone numbers might make visitors uncomfortable, as they fear potential harassment or unsolicited calls. Therefore, it’s crucial to question the necessity of each field. If you’re solely interested in growing your newsletter, omitting the phone number field may be a wise choice.

Studies Support Short Forms
Numerous studies have confirmed that shorter forms tend to yield better conversion rates. By reducing the number of fields, you decrease the perceived effort required from users, making it more likely for them to complete the form. Remember, your goal is to minimize friction and streamline the user experience.

Reducing Friction with Simplicity
Throughout the sales funnel on your website, your aim should be to simplify the user journey and minimize friction. While you might be tempted to include additional questions such as “How did you find us?”, it’s often unnecessary. Instead, consider asking such questions during the initial contact with the prospect, allowing for a more personalized conversation.

It’s important to acknowledge the potential leads you might be losing due to unnecessary information collection. Imagine yourself in the shoes of a user who abandons a form due to a required phone number field. By critically evaluating the forms on your site, you can optimize them for better conversion rates.

Ensuring Form Functionality

Apart from the number of fields, it’s crucial to ensure that your forms are working properly. Here are some steps to take:

Test the Form Yourself
Submit a test form and check if you receive the confirmation email. If you’re using WordPress, many form plugins provide a green “Email was sent” notification to confirm successful submission. Should an error occur, this will help you identify the issue and rectify it promptly.

Possible Reasons for Form Failure if using WordPress
Several factors can lead to form submission failure. Consider the following possibilities:

Outdated Form Plugin: Ensure that your form plugin is up to date. Regularly updating plugins is essential for maintaining their functionality.

SMTP Plugin Configuration: If you use an SMTP plugin to send WordPress emails through a third-party service like Gmail, changing your Gmail account password can disrupt the functionality. Verify the configuration to ensure proper functioning.

“From” Email Address: WordPress prefers “Send From” email addresses that match your domain. If the email address doesn’t align with your website URL, it might cause issues. It doesn’t have to be a real email, so you can always use noreply@yourdomain.com.

Check Spam or Junk Folders: Sometimes, emails from form submissions can end up in spam or junk folders. Ensure you regularly check these folders and whitelist the email address to prevent this.

Contact Hosting Company: If none of the above solutions work, contact your hosting company to inquire about any potential mail server issues.

Time To Evaluate Your Forms
Now that you understand the importance of reducing form fields and ensuring their functionality, it’s time to complete your assignment:

Review Your Forms
Thoroughly analyze the forms on your website. Determine if you can reduce the information you are collecting without sacrificing your objectives. Look for opportunities to streamline and simplify the form fields.

Identify Critical Fields
Identify the essential fields necessary to accomplish your goals. Focus on capturing vital information, such as email, name, and any other key details relevant to your specific needs.

Test Form Submission

Submit a test form and verify that you receive the confirmation email. Check for any errors or issues that may hinder the form’s functionality.

By implementing these steps, you can optimize your website forms to improve user experience, increase conversions, and effectively capture valuable leads. Remember, simplicity and functionality are key factors in creating successful online forms.

If your website is built on WordPress, you can easily find and fix broken links by utilizing a broken link checker plugin. Here’s how you can do it:

Access your WordPress dashboard and navigate to Plugins > Add New.

Search for a reputable broken link checker plugin. One popular option is the “Broken Link Checker” plugin developed by WPMU DEV.

Before installing a plugin, ensure that it meets certain criteria:
1 – The plugin should be frequently updated to ensure compatibility with the latest version of WordPress and to address any security concerns.
2 – It should be compatible with your specific version of WordPress.

Look for plugins that have a significant number of positive reviews and satisfied users. This indicates its reliability and effectiveness.

Once you have chosen and installed the plugin, you can access it by going to Tools > Broken Links from your WordPress dashboard.

Give the plugin some time to scan and check the links on your website. This process may take a while, especially if your website has a large number of links.

After the scan is complete, navigate to the “Broken” tab to view any broken links that were detected.

For each broken link, you have several options:

Unlink the broken link from the page, which removes the hyperlink but keeps the anchor text intact.

Edit the URL and replace it with the correct one.

Dismiss the broken link, indicating that it should be ignored.

It’s worth noting that the plugin may flag YouTube video links as broken. In such cases, you can safely dismiss them as they are not actual broken links.

Fixing Redirects and Cleaning Up Broken Links

Apart from identifying broken links, it’s essential to clean up any redirects and ensure they are pointing to the correct URLs.

Follow these steps to fix redirects and clean up broken links:

Access the “Redirect” tab within the broken link checker plugin.

Click on the redirect link, which will open the new URL in a separate tab.

Copy the new URL and return to the broken links page.

Edit the broken link and replace it with the correct URL.

Redirects often occur when you or another website changes the page name or when sites transition from HTTP to HTTPS. Although redirects are not technically considered broken links, it’s good practice to clean them up as well to maintain the overall health of your website.

Receive Email Notifications for Broken Links

To stay on top of broken links, you can configure the broken link checker plugin to send you email notifications whenever it detects any broken links. This allows you to address the issues promptly. Alternatively, if you prefer not to keep the plugin running continuously, you can uninstall and reinstall it periodically to check for broken links. It’s recommended to perform these checks monthly or at least quarterly to ensure your website remains in good technical shape.

Finding broken links on sites that DO NOT use WordPress

If your website is not built on WordPress, you can still identify broken links by using online tools designed for this purpose. One such tool is www.deadlinkchecker.com.
Follow these steps to find broken links on non-WordPress websites:

Visit www.deadlinkchecker.com or a similar service.

Enter your website’s URL and click the “check” button.

Depending on the size of your site, the checking process may take some time. Use this opportunity to take a break or grab a cup of coffee.

Once the check is complete, the tool will generate a report listing all the 404 errors (broken links) it found.

While using external tools may not be as convenient as using a WordPress plugin, they still provide an effective means to locate broken links on your website.

Preventing Future Broken Links

After finding and fixing broken links on your website, it’s essential to take preventive measures to avoid their occurrence in the future. While you can’t control broken links on external websites, you can certainly prevent 404 errors on your own site.

When changing the page slug (the URL address of a page) for a published page, set up a redirect from the old page name to the new one. This ensures that visitors who click on the old link are seamlessly redirected to the correct page.

Redirection plugins, such as “Redirection” by John Godley for WordPress, can help you manage redirects efficiently.

Install a redirection plugin from Plugins > Add New in your WordPress dashboard.

Activate the plugin and complete the setup process.

Access the redirection page from Tools > Redirection in your WordPress dashboard.

Add new redirects by specifying the old and new page URLs and clicking “Add Redirect.”

Redirects should be considered a temporary fix, as search engines usually update the links fairly quickly. If you notice that old links are still receiving clicks even after adding redirects, you should investigate their source. The broken link checker will identify redirects in the “redirects” tab, allowing you to fix the link with the correct URL.

What does a redirect do?

It tells search engine crawlers “Hey this page has a new address” so they can update the link if it was indexed

Visitors that click the old link are seamlessly redirected to the correct page

Remember that while search engines don’t penalize websites for 404 errors, it’s crucial to minimize them to provide a positive user experience. By regularly finding and fixing broken links, you can enhance your website’s functionality, improve user satisfaction, and maintain a healthy online presence.

Having clear and intuitive website navigation is crucial for website visitors to easily find the information they are looking for. A well-structured navigation system enhances user experience and increases the likelihood of visitors staying on your website longer. Here are some additional tips to make it easier for website visitors to find what they’re looking for:

How can we make it easier for website visitors to find what they’re looking for?

Limit the Number of Tabs

Minimize the number of top-level tabs in your navigation bar. Having too many options can overwhelm visitors and make it difficult for them to locate specific information. Focus on the most important and frequently accessed sections of your website, such as Home, About, Services or Products, Testimonials, Blog, and Contact.

Organize Subcategories

If you have a large amount of content or a variety of services, use dropdown menus or subcategories to organize related pages under the appropriate tab. This helps avoid cluttering the navigation bar and allows visitors to navigate to specific sections more efficiently.

Use Descriptive Labels

Ensure that the labels used for each navigation tab are clear, descriptive, and easily understood by visitors. Instead of generic terms, consider using specific labels that accurately represent the content or purpose of each section.

Prioritize User Experience:

Put yourself in the shoes of a first-time visitor and evaluate the navigation bar’s usability. Is there a clear path to the information they are seeking within a few seconds? Is the organization logical and intuitive? Make adjustments based on user feedback and behavior analysis to enhance the user experience.

Optimize for Mobile

With the rise in mobile device usage, it’s crucial to ensure that your navigation bar is mobile-friendly and responsive. Test its functionality and appearance on various screen sizes to ensure smooth navigation for mobile visitors.

Make your contact information easy to find

It’s important to have a clear way for people to get in contact with you. Include your contact page as the last item in the navigation.

Using resource pages

If you have a lot of content on your website, using resource pages that link out to your important content might be a solution that works for you. That is a better choice than cramming in too many pages in a drop down menu.

Regularly Review and Refine Your Navigation Menu

Continuously monitor and analyze user behavior to identify any navigation issues or areas for improvement. Regularly review your navigation bar’s performance and make necessary adjustments to enhance usability.

Is there a clear path to the information they are looking for? You want to get them to the information they seek in 2-3 seconds or they will leave.

If you have several types of visitors, is there a clear path for each type?

How are your top level tabs? Are they organized in a logical way based on what you are offering?

Do you have 10 pages in your drop down? Could you instead offer a resource page and link to them from there?

Do you have a clear way for them to contact you (via email, phone or form)?

By focusing on these principles, you can create a clear and user-friendly website navigation bar that enables visitors to find the information they need efficiently, improving their overall experience on your website.

Logged into your YouTube channel recently?

If you uploaded a video in the past few days, you might have noticed 2 new settings you have to set before publishing (located in the audience section).

Also there is a notification across the top of the screen with a short cut to the settings you should set for your channel to let YouTube know about your audience to comply with COPPA.

What is COPPA?

The Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act, more commonly known as COPPA, is a law dealing with how websites, apps, and other online operators collect data and personal information from kids under the age of 13.

The law has been around, so why is YouTube making changes now? A $170 Million fine tends to do that.

I don’t make content for kids so why should I care?

Google does have an algorithm that will flag content it thinks is targeting kids. If you don’t have the right settings, you could find yourself in a bit of trouble.

The solution is easy if you are a business and are not targeting kids with your content. Simply login to your YouTube channel and set your audience settings to the appropriate setting. I don’t make videos for kids, so I set my entire channel to the No option. If you have some that are and some that aren’t, you will want to choose the 3rd option and set them individually vs setting a channel-wide setting. You know your channel, so only you can decide how to set those settings. It is going to depend on your content.

If you do have content for kids, well things just got complicated. The following video from YouTube does a good job explaining what to expect and how to decide if your content is for kids.
