Out of site is out of mind. When family comes into town, I can't help but to eat the cookies they place on the table before me. But if I don't see them, I don't think about them.

And financially speaking, the more you exercise, the greater your chance of avoiding diabetes etc. is. My dad has to check his sugar daily and it keeps me running.

Is Working Two Jobs Worth It? / Comment:

I think it's worth it if you have to make ends meet, and you should definitely work as much as you can when you're still young and single. Let everyone else party it up - the party never ends. You can just do more when you get older and catch up. If you happen to have a family later, it's important to balance things and be there for them.

The best thing you can do to teach your child about money is to let them work for the things they want. You'll need to show them just how long they need to work in order to afford that movie, dinner or new toy.

When they ask you how they can make more, encourage them to keep working, abandon the things they don't really need, and tie in the lesson of education and how it can increase their chances of making more.

I was uninsured for a while, and it sucks because I consciously avoided doing a lot of sports and other things that I would have otherwise enjoyed to the fullest. These days it's all about taking calculated risks when you don't have insurance.

Some good numbers in the article. I didn't know that the uninsured numbers were so high, and that the 20-something age group had such a voice.

Good post. I graduated with 10 great friends in middle school. 4 of us went to great private schools, 3 went to a great charter school, 2 went to public school, and 1 is being home-schooled. Of us who went to private schools, we are at Carnegie Mellon, RPI, Middlebury and Bard, those who went to charter school are going to MIT, Wesleyan and Williams. Unfortunately my friends' public school burnt them out so badly one left early and the other barely survived. They, and my home-schooled friend, are all at community college--it is a world class opportunity for them to fall in love with school again (something community colleges can focus on more than big 4-years). They are living at home, getting the credits they need, and they will be able to transfer into the UC system ahead.

Good deal, and a great way to make up for a cruddy public school experience.

It's hard for a lot of younger American workers today especially because universities and colleges have lowered many of their requirements and expectations. BA/BS is not what is was 10 years ago. I remember when a doctorate was only required for teaching and the few who wanted the distinction - these days, it seems like the only thing that can set you apart.

These days it's tough for grads to be able to land a dream job right out of college unless they're in the top 1%, get lucky or have connections. With so much competition out there, especially from laid-off veterans, it may take a little longer but will be worth it in the end.

I'm of the opinion that prices will continue to drop and you should wait it out. This is my reasoning. If you miss out on a true bottom, you'll pay a little more buying on the way up, but it'll still be an upward trend where you can enjoy home appreciation versus depreciation. Makes sense to me.

A well-balanced and objective article. I agree that true creativity is stunted by working in groups. Many of the best theories in any subject were created by the thinkings of one man or a team.

Try it out yourself if you don't believe it. At a party or group, bring up the subject of what would be a great new business idea and how you should market it. Everyone will have ideas, and most of them probably won't work.

I think the best point you made in the article was that you should buy a pre-owned new car. You'll be able to avoid the initial depreciation hit and still have a pretty much brand new vehicle to drive around. The new car smell won't go away after a few thousand miles, and you also won't have to deal with the break-in period and early maintenance some new cars require.

People should get over the ego and just get a gently used car.

Great article that clearly explains the costs associated with NOT having health insurance. People who are unemployed are also more likely to go out and do crazy things because they "don't have to work Monday."

An increase in risky behavior and lots of time off will make the likelihood of you getting seriously injured a lot higher. A friend of mine recently cut his COBRA because it was too expensive - he broke his wrist recently skateboarding. Now he knows that the COBRA was actually insignificant to what he'll have to pay out of pocket.

I have a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from an Australian university. I'm now doing a Diploma of Accounting through the Australian equivalent of a community college. My main criteria were (a) a course that teaches book-keeping and (b) did not require class attendance. The Open Learning (work at own pace at home) course I'm doing meets those criteria. It's also cheaper than a Bachelor of Commerce from a uni (although I might do that later).

That's a great post. I was a community college graduate, while my brother went straight to UCLA. We both ended up with diplomas from the same school, but my costs were significantly less.

I hear a lot of kids say that's it's good to get away due to parents, getting the college experience, etc. I don't buy it. You have much more fun (and the monetary resources to do it) when you're older.

College is and will always be a great financial investment, but there are things you can do along the way to minimize your exposure to too much debt.

Argh, this $250 check has been the carrot they've been hanging in front of me for a while. BTW, in my account it says it's still available. Will it disappear at the end of June?

From website: F2538	$250 Chase Freedom Cash Check	200.00	In Stock

I was using Chase exclusively for gas, groceries, and restaurants. Without the 3% bonus, there is nothing keeping me from using my other, higher-limit card.

It's really wrong for them to change these terms after promising at signup. I will not trust long-run Chase promotions again.

To save money on coffee, I usually bring my coffee mug—the one that keeps my coffee warm for more than an hour— with me to Starbucks, which saves a few cents every time.

Great article! One other thing to note is that you should add in auto insurance and repair/maintenance factors into your auto budget to see what you can really afford. This way, you'll be able to see the true cost of vehicle ownership and avoid a vehicle repo.
