…Why Your Business Needs a Mobile-Friendly Website

Nowadays more and more users are finding your website on a smartphone mobile device.

The numbers are steadily increasing and Google is penalizing sites that are not mobile-friendly with a drop in rankings.

Google was the first to implement this into their search algorithm and recently Bing has followed suit with their search results. In short, As Mike Gingerich puts it, “Basically if your site is not easy to use and navigate on a mobile device, your rankings may be going down.”

What are a few of the key factors to becoming mobile-friendly?

Correct font size on a mobile device: Usually 16px or larger.
Change all scrolling to vertical and eliminate horizontal scrolling altogether.
All menu and navigation buttons should be easily found and able to be selected with one finger.
All content should load appropriately and outdated formats (such as Flash) should be updated.

Recently, I finished up a website redesign project for Charleston Uplighting, an up-and-coming small business in Charleston, SC that adds mood enhancing lighting to their client’s special events.

I completely rebuilt the website working closely with Tonia and Rob on creating the specific look and feel they were looking for. With the incorporation of a dynamic slider, vivid colors to accentuate their lighting and classy fonts I was able to create a website they were thrilled with.

They needed my help in the following areas:

Re-design their current website to make it more appealing and showcase their work
Design a logo to reflect their fresh and professional image
Make their website easier to navigate and add social networks for sharing content
Install sliders and a visually appealing them to convey their work to potential clients
Integrate various plugins to improve site functionality

Google Power Search Status: Achieved

Enlightening course I took recently on getting the most out of the searches I enter into Google. Basically, a very good class for anyone that researches or just spends a lot of time on the PC. With my Job, I fall into the latter category.

As with all Google courses it was informative and I recommend it.

Before & After: Eastern Energy Solutions

Recently, I finished up a website redesign project for Eastern Energy Solutions. They are a fast-growing, leading energy contracting & consulting firm in NY State.

They came to me looking to do three things:

1. Update the old .html/flash code to better reflect their fresh and professional image

2. Make their website easier and more appealing to navigate

3. Remove the outdated flash components that weren’t rendering on some mobile devices (increase device compatibility)

This was a rather large project due to the large amount of content and case studies we added to the site.

Golf Courses Reaching Out More With Social Media

Golf courses are finding that reaching out to the new generation of golfers requires speaking their language.

More specifically, engaging with them on Facebook and social media.

If Facebook was around then, Mr. Jones would have been all over it…

This article I came across in PGA Magazine addresses this new need for golf courses to revise their digital strategy.

Here’s a snippet:

Traditionally, golf has been dominated by older, more established players with the time and money to invest in the game. However, there has been a movement in recent years to bring younger Americans into the sport through junior clinics and programs, as well as a variety of new golf equipment and apparel designed specifically for juniors. And with the help of Golf 2.0’s “Drive New Players” strategy, many PGA Professionals are joining the movement to reach outto the next generation of golfers in essence, their future club members-by sponsoring youth events, devoting retail space to junior products and using social media to enter their comfort zone and make golf fun and relevant.

“If you want to engage junior golfers and grow your junior golf program, you have to do what they’re doing. Nowadays, you have to be on Facebook. You have to have a Twitter account,” says Will Reilly, a 20-year PGA Professional who last year joined The PGA of America’s national staff in the newly created position of Junior Golf Development Manager. “Traditionally, golf professionals wanted juniors to come to them. Nowadays, you have to go out and get them because they have so many other things in their life. And you have to reach them on their terms – the way they reach each other.

“Our message is, ‘Embrace the technology.’ If you do that, you will create a buzz about your golf program.”
