It did not earn him friends in media, but he rightfully earned our deepest respect.

In a video message, Warrior Chief John Levi and Amy Sock of the Elsipogtog First Nation share a call for solidarity against fracking in New Brunswick.

The Council of Canadians extends its full solidarity with the ongoing protests in New Brunswick. Last Thursday, Atlantic organizer Angela Giles and organizing assistant Ali Vervaeke went to the sacred fire at Highway 126 and met with Warrior Chief John Levi to express our solidarity. Last Friday, Fredericton chapter activist Mark D’Arcy was arrested along with eleven others trying to block the thumper trucks on the highway. The Fredericton chapter have been regularly attending the protests and supporting this cause. An action alert on our website this week generated more than 1200 letters to the province’s Ombudsman calling for a moratorium on fracking in New Brunswick.

My colleague Marie Léger-St-Jean recounted the drama of corruption in Québec in her last blog post. The classic characters took the stage one after the other: puppets, harlequins, Artful Dodgers, Pierrots, and happier clowns. While her post was published yesterday, a new pathetic act was added: the police arrested the mayor of Montreal.

On June 17, the Council of Canadians joined with hundreds of health-care professionals, lawyers, and refugee rights activists to protest the government's discriminatory cuts to health care for refugees.

Last year the government announced that it was making changes to the Interim Federal Health program which would take away all refugees' rights to access even basic health-care services unless they posed a public health risk.

A union representing workers at a Labatt brewery in St. John's has launched a boycott campaign, asking the public to refrain from buying a large number of brands manufactured at the site.

A union representing workers at a Labatt brewery in St. John's has launched a boycott campaign, asking the public to refrain from buying a large number of brands manufactured at the site. About fifty employees (NAPE Local 7004) have been on a legal strike since April, following a brief wildcat strike that was prompted by the company's request for the unionized workers to train their replacements. The request was made days before the expiration date of the workers' collective agreement.
