Recent migrant worker fatalities under investigation

The cause of death of two Jamaican migrant agriculture workers who died on Friday, September 10, at a Grey County Ontario farm is still under investigation. The chief liaison officer in the Jamaica Liaison Service (JLS) in Toronto would only describe it as a "job-related accident."

The two men, aged 36 and 44, were working at the Filsinger's Organic Foods apple orchard and processing facility in Ayton, Ontario -- about 70 kilometers south of Owen Sound.

Provincial police and the Ontario Ministry of Labour are conducting an investigation.

Part one of a three-part interview. Our guests are Eddie Huesca of Fuerza/Puwersa (a migrant justice advocacy group); Drew Garvie of Young Communist League-Guelph; and Ryan White, a Toronto-based employment lawyer. They talk about the implications surrounding the recent re-imposition of visa requirements on people of Mexican and Czech-Roma descent. These requirements were implemented to specifically target individuals seeking refugee status in Canada and are intended to block the large flow of Mexicans and Czech-Roma people into Canada.

In response to these recent raids that have occurred under the public's noses, there have been many mass public actions throughout Canada denouncing these dehumanizing attacks on racialized working-poor (im)migrant communities, including in Guelph, ON. Fuerza/Puwersa organized a potluck dinner and panel on April 30, 2009 in Downtown Guelph. This "Status for All!" May Day Dinner event featured speakers from several different associations including Janet McLaughlin (researcher on migration and instructor at the University of Guelph), Marco Luciano (coordinator with Migrante Ontario), Craig Fortier (organizer with No One Is Illegal-Toronto), and Benny Quay (International Student Advisor, University of Guelph).

Community members and allies from throughout Southern Ontario have been occupying the Hanlon Creek Business Park (HCBP) development site in the south end of Guelph since 27 July 2009, halting preliminary developments of the planned 675-acre corporate industrial development.

The occupation serves to prevent one of the last Old Growth Forests in Guelph (for example, there exists the Victoria & Wild Goose Woods in The Arboretum at the University of Guelph which are Old Growth Forests --Yup! They’ve never been clear cut, thank god), not to mention in Southern Ontario, and the lands surrounding it from being forever damaged by commercial and industrial development.
