The Roaming Ear, episode 10: Street Music Manifesto

Victoria Fenner's ideal streetscape includes music.

"Street Music Manifesto" is part of the project Soul of the Street, a project of The Factory Media Arts Centre in Hamilton, about arrival, displacement and transformation on James Street North, the city's oldest street.

Victoria composed five different series of audio pieces for SOS, which were installed in wooden boxes with headphones along the street.

She chose street music as a theme because she wanted listeners to think about streetscapes in other parts of the world to those in North American cities, especially Hamilton.

A Day in the Life of Parliament Hill:

10 am - The Changing of the Guard - because the Queen liked it and so do the tourists

noon - The Protests (because our MPs are on lunch - no point yelling at them when they're in The House yelling at each other)

3:00 - Question Period - when they REALLY yell at each other. Yes, I had some fun with this piece.

"Meeting Place" is part of the Capital Resoundings Suite, an extensive project where I recorded, wrote about, and composed poems from the Ottawa soundscape at the turn of the Millenium.

Thanks to the Region of Ottawa Carleton for their financial support of this project.

Victoria picks her favorite memories from over 20 years as a radio producer and field recording technician. Stories abound.

Her ears are well tuned to hear the world in a surprising way. She doesn't just present the sounds as she hears them. She turns them into documentaries. Most people travel with a camera. Victoria travels with her microphone too. With over 20 years as a radio producer and field recording tech, sound poems and audio portraits of a world alive with sound.

"Growing up in the 50s in a Montreal Jewish community, Israel was frequent topic of conversation on miracles. Sure we sang O Canada, God Save the Queen, played, dated, married and made a living in Canada.

"I start by stepping back, over 50 years. I was growing up in a small French town in Quebec, where we were one of four Jewish families. I doubt if I knew what a Muslim was, but I did know that the Catholic kids would chase me home from school yelling that I’d killed Jesus...." Peter

"Because I was born and grew up in South Africa, I find the story of my past and my identity as a Jew juxtaposed often in quite forceful ways. Universities across Canada regularly host Israel Apartheid week, Jimmy Carter writes a book called “Palestine, Peace or Apartheid”. Let me start with the past.

"The world I inhabited as a child was one not so much of anti-Zionism, but indifference to the notion that Jews needed a homeland, a land that God had decreed belonged to them. In fact there was no God in my world. My parents, immigrants to the US before World War One, victims of pogroms in Russia felt betrayed by this so-called being that had failed them and their people..."

Harvey's Story

"In Hebrew school we would buy stamps to plant a tree in Israel. I could only imagine this somewhat barren life coming to life with the trees that we planted. I often wondered whether when visiting Israel I would fine the forest and my tree with my name inscribed upon its trunk..."
Harvey

We're interested and happy to share other peoples' stories through the Tikkun Toronto website, whether you share our experiences or have completely different ones, whether you're Jewish, Muslim, or other. Share your story on our website. Or email us.
