Authorities in Malaysia detained 300 members of the Ahmadiyah Muslim Community, including 12 leaders and organizers, during a raid on a religious event in the state of Sabah, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) confirmed.

The joint operation, conducted by the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) and police, targeted a gathering associated with the Ahmadiyah Qadiani sect. The event, part of the group’s 32nd Regional Jalsa Salana, was held from May 29 to 31 at the SM Lok Yuk School Hall in Kota Kinabalu, following a tip-off from the public on May 28.

According to Acting Kota Kinabalu Police Chief Supt. Syed Lot Syed Abdul Rahman, the program was linked to teachings declared deviant by the Sabah State Fatwa Council in 2007. “The Ahmadiyah Qadiani sect has been deemed misleading and contrary to Islamic doctrine and is prohibited under local religious law,” Syed Lot said in a media statement.

Authorities seized 24 banners featuring the sect’s founder, 200 books, program documents, attendance lists, and additional materials connected to the event. “The case is being investigated under Sections 52(1), 52A, and 102 of the Sabah Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1995,” Syed Lot added.

The detained individuals were brought to the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters for documentation and further investigation by JHEAINS. They were subsequently released on bail under the applicable legal provisions.

Syed Lot urged the public to seek guidance from recognized religious authorities, warning that “strict action will be taken against individuals or groups found to spread teachings that contravene Islamic principles.”

The Malaysian government has faced criticism from international religious freedom advocates for its policies against the Ahmadiyah community, which considers itself Muslim but is viewed as heretical by mainstream Islamic authorities in Malaysia.

The attack occurred at approximately 8:56 p.m. as a pickup truck belonging to the Hifazat-e-Markaz, a private volunteer security force of the community, transported personnel on duty.

According to police reports, suspects fired multiple rounds from 9mm pistols, targeting the vehicle from close range. Two individuals, aged 23 and 39, riding in the rear compartment, sustained serious gunshot injuries. They were immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where they remain in critical condition. Spent bullet casings and other evidence have been recovered from the crime scene.

Ahmadiyya community representatives described this attack as part of a pattern of targeted violence against Ahmadis, who endure systemic discrimination and are frequently subjected to hate-related incidents.

The community representatives claimed the attack to be a deliberate act of intimidation. Charges have been registered under Section 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code for attempted murder and under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. Investigators said the assailants fled the scene on motorcycles and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend them.

Pope Leo XIV marked the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, the Second Vatican Council’s landmark declaration on interfaith relations, by hosting hundreds of religious leaders at the Vatican. The event included an ecumenical prayer service at the Colosseum and cultural celebrations in the Paul VI Audience Hall, emphasizing dialogue, peace, and shared human values. The Pope described Nostra Aetate as a “way of life,” urging leaders to reject prejudice and work together to foster reconciliation and unity across faiths.

Imam Marwan Gill, representing the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community from Argentina and Chile, attended the event alongside a colleague from Italy. The delegation conveyed greetings from the Ahmadiyya spiritual leader, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, and reaffirmed the community’s commitment to interfaith dialogue. Imam Gill praised the Pope’s hospitality and said, “Promoting mutual respect and universal brotherhood is a vital tenet of Islam.”

The Colosseum gathering saw religious leaders light candles as a symbol of their shared commitment to peace, while blue banners bearing the word “peace” in multiple languages waved in the background. Pope Leo called for an end to war and injustice, reminding attendees that prayer and dialogue are powerful tools for transforming the world.

The celebrations concluded with multicultural performances and reflections on Nostra Aetate’s legacy, with Pope Leo reiterating that all religions share a mission to guide humanity toward peace and meaning. “We belong to one human family,” the Pope said, urging leaders to keep hope and love alive in a world often tempted by despair.

Nostra Aetate (“In Our Time”) is the Second Vatican Council’s historic declaration on the Church’s relationship with non-Christian religions. Signed by Pope Paul VI on October 28, 1965, it laid the foundation for interreligious dialogue and mutual understanding. The document emphasized humanity’s shared origin and destiny, the values of other religions, and the importance of respect and collaboration between faiths. Particularly notable is its rejection of antisemitism and its call for dialogue with Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and other world religions to foster peace and fraternity.

In her remarks, Asif emphasized the fundamental connection between education and human dignity. “Education enables people to understand their political rights, participate in decision-making, and hold leaders accountable,” she said. She underscored education as a foundational right that drives societal progress and empowerment.

Asif, who holds a Master’s degree in Cyber Security Engineering, currently manages cybersecurity operations at a major German energy provider. Her professional background, shared in a biography provided to Rabwah Times, reflects her dedication to leveraging education to advance human rights and technological innovation.

Akbar highlighted systemic barriers to education, noting that “the readiness to learn was met not with opportunities, but with obstacles.” She called for the development of flexible education systems designed to meet children where they are, rather than adhering to rigid bureaucratic structures.

Pakistani politician and former federal minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain has sparked a heated debate on religious extremism, highlighting its presence across all communities, including the Ahmadiyya community.

In his tweet, Fawad stated, “Religious extremists, whether Hindu, Muslim, Jew, or Christian, are all the same.” However, he singled out the Ahmadiyya community, alleging their involvement in partition-era violence, particularly in Sialkot. He also referenced their financial support for the All-India Muslim League, writing, “Ahmadis and Ismailis provided the largest funding for the League.”

Fawad’s comments drew mixed reactions, with some members of the Ahmadiyya community acknowledging parts of their history, while others criticized the remarks as inflammatory.

1947 Cable from Nehru to Sir Zafrullah Khan

One Ahmadi social media user highlighted the community’s historical advocacy for stricter blasphemy laws in pre-partition India, tweeting, “Prior to the creation of Pakistan, Ahmadis advocated for stricter blasphemy laws, requesting individuals be allowed to file cases for disrespecting religious figures. Now, Ahmadis find themselves targeted by the very laws they supported. A reminder that laws affecting religious expression must be carefully crafted to protect all communities.”

The same user shared historical government documents alleging Ahmadi involvement in communal violence in East Punjab in 1948 and pointed to their support for Ilm-ud-Din, who killed a book publisher in British India over alleged blasphemy.

Jan 1948 letter to Indian Ambassador

In an earlier tweet from 2014, Fawad had highlighted Ahmadiyya community’s role in shaping Pakistan’s early religious policies, by supporting the Objective Resolution in 1949. He wrote, “Ahmadis played an active role in the Objective Resolution, and Zafarullah Khan was as communal as any Muslim Leaguer.”

The Objective Resolution, a key document in Pakistan’s early constitutional history, is often seen as a turning point that paved the way for religion’s inclusion in politics. Many argue this decision marginalized religious minorities, including the Ahmadis, who were declared non-Muslims under the constitution in 1974.

The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, a bipartisan body of the U.S. House of Representatives, has strongly condemned a violent attack on the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Pakistan and urged the U.S. State Department to take decisive action to protect religious minorities in the country.

The Commission reacted to reports of six Ahmadis being injured when gunmen opened fire at the Bait-ul-Mehdi mosque in Rabwah during Friday prayers. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Commission described the incident as an “appalling attack” and called on the U.S. government to use the tools available under Pakistan’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) to pressure Islamabad into curbing violence against minority groups.

“@StateDept must use powers granted by Pakistan’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern to urge @GovtofPakistan to deter violence against religious minorities,” the Commission tweeted.

The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, which has faced systemic persecution in Pakistan. A 1974 constitutional amendment declared Ahmadis non-Muslims, and subsequent laws have restricted their religious practices. Rights groups, including the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, have repeatedly criticized Pakistan for failing to protect the community from violence and discrimination.

The Commission, established in 2008 with the unanimous consent of the U.S. House of Representatives, promotes and advocates for international human rights as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It collaborates with members of Congress, the executive branch, and civil society organizations to advance bipartisan human rights initiatives.

Chaired by Rep. James P. McGovern (D-MA) and Rep. Christopher H. Smith (R-NJ), the Commission emphasized the importance of U.S. intervention to ensure Pakistan adheres to its constitutional commitment to freedom of religion.

The Lantos Foundation for Human Rights & Justice, an organization that works closely with the Commission, echoed these concerns, describing the attack as part of an escalating pattern of violence against Ahmadis. “Violent attacks on this community continue to escalate, with local and federal authorities doing little to stem the violence and persecution,” the Foundation said in a separate statement on X.

Both groups have called on Pakistan’s government to take immediate action to uphold its obligations to protect religious minorities and prevent further violence.

U.S. lawmakers have condemned the Algerian government for its systematic restrictions on religious freedom, including the persecution of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community. The concerns were outlined in a bipartisan resolution, H. Res. 738, introduced by Representatives French Hill of Arkansas and Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, which calls for greater accountability for nations violating religious rights globally.

The resolution, referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, highlights Algeria’s use of blasphemy laws to prosecute religious minorities, as well as the forced closure of churches and restrictions on non-Muslim worship. Lawmakers expressed particular concern about the treatment of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, which faces systemic harassment and discrimination.

The resolution describes the Algerian government’s actions against the Ahmadiyya Muslim community as “systematic persecution.” Ahmadis are frequently targeted under blasphemy laws and face obstacles in practicing their faith openly. Members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, another minority group, have also been persecuted.

In addition to targeting Ahmadis, the resolution notes that Algeria has forcibly closed Evangelical Protestant churches and imposes restrictions requiring state permission to establish non-Muslim places of worship.

“Algeria’s policies and practices not only violate international human rights standards but also deny basic freedoms to its religious minorities,” the resolution states.

The resolution also highlights Algeria’s tolerance of antisemitism, which restricts the Jewish community’s ability to practice their faith openly. Such actions, according to U.S. lawmakers, further exacerbate the challenges facing religious minorities in the country.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has recommended Algeria for the State Department’s Special Watch List, citing severe violations of religious freedom.

USCIRF praised the bipartisan introduction of H.Res. 738 as a demonstration of the U.S. government’s commitment to protecting religious freedom worldwide. Vice Chair Asif Mahmood emphasized the importance of U.S. engagement with countries on the SWL, noting that many of these nations maintain robust relationships with the United States. “If passed, H.Res. 738 would clarify that the U.S. House of Representatives expects to see not only engagement but progress on FoRB issues,” Mahmood said.

Helen Maguire, the Liberal Democrat MP for Epsom & Ewell, described the attack as the “violent culmination of years of state-sanctioned hate against Ahmadi Muslims.” She called on the Pakistani government to take immediate action, stating, “We must see action from the Government of Pakistan to protect freedom of religion for all.”

Fleur Anderson MP, who represents Putney, Southfields, and Roehampton, also expressed her outrage on social media, sharing:

“Dreadful news that a terrorist opened fire on volunteers after Friday prayers in #Rabwah. I was there myself 1.5 years ago. This is utterly devastating. My solidarity is with the #Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Pakistan must end this persecution and protect its citizens.”

Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon, a current member of the House of Lords and former UK Foreign Minister and Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Preventing Sexual Violence (2017–2024), also condemned the attack. Stressing the importance of protecting religious minorities, he said, “The continued targeting of Ahmadi Muslims goes against every principle of the vision of Qaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah – of freedom of faith and worship.” He urged Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to deliver justice and take immediate steps to safeguard the Ahmadi community.

Siobhain McDonagh MP, a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, added her voice to the condemnation. Sharing the APPG’s statement on social media, she seconded their remarks, which stated:

“Appalled by reports of a terrorist attack on an #Ahmadi Muslim mosque in #Rabwah, #Pakistan following Friday prayers. We urge Pakistani authorities to ensure the safety of all worshippers and end impunity for those who incite or perpetrate hate crimes.”

The Ahmadi Muslim community, declared non-Muslims under Pakistani law, has faced decades of persecution. The attack in Rabwah has underscored concerns highlighted in the USCIRF report, calling on Pakistan to honor its commitments to religious freedom and protect vulnerable minorities.

Humanity First, a global charity founded in the United Kingdom in 1995 by Mirza Tahir Ahmad, the leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, has expanded its relief efforts in Gaza and the West Bank, providing critical aid to struggling communities.

The organization, headquartered in Ramallah for its Gaza and West Bank operations, focuses on addressing poverty, improving healthcare, and supporting education. Humanity First began its work in Palestine in 2016 after obtaining a license from the Palestinian Ministry of Interior. The organization is supported by a dedicated team of volunteers, primarily from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, who contribute their time without receiving salaries.

In Gaza, the organization has launched significant initiatives such as a water supply project to address the acute water shortages caused by damaged infrastructure. The project has provided clean drinking water to communities suffering from the destruction of water networks. Last year alone, Humanity First allocated $1 million to aid Gaza, delivering food parcels, distributing Eid al-Adha Qurbani meat, and offering financial assistance to families affected by poverty and displacement.

In the West Bank, Humanity First has implemented several educational and medical projects. The organization recently supported the Insan Care Clinic in Jiyous, which treated 295 patients in September 2025. The clinic offers general medical consultations, gynecological services, ophthalmology care, and free medications. Humanity First equipped the clinic with essential medical devices and supplies.

During Eid al-Adha, the charity donated eight cattle for sacrifice and distributed the meat to approximately 1,000 families across the West Bank, including in Tulkarm, Nablus, Jenin, Ramallah, Hebron, Salfit, and the Sha’rawiyah region. In Beit Lid, a village hosting 30 displaced families from Tulkarm and Nur Shams refugee camps, Humanity First organized a free medical day, treating 95 patients with the help of volunteer doctors and Dar Al-Shifa Pharmaceutical Company.

The charity has also provided extensive educational support, including hundreds of university scholarships and partial tuition assistance for school students. This month, school bags and stationery were distributed to children from impoverished families in Tulkarm following a request from the local Directorate of Social Development. Over the years, Humanity First has funded projects such as laboratories for the visually impaired at Al-Quds Open University in Gaza, helping address Palestine’s fragile education system.

Governor of Tulkarm, Maj. Gen. Dr. Abdullah Kamil, praised Humanity First’s efforts and highlighted their contributions to social solidarity during difficult times. He noted the charity’s alignment with plans to launch a Charitable Solidarity Fund, which will provide financial assistance to university students and fund other community programs in the region.

Following the recent attack on the central Ahmadiyya mosque, Bait-ul-Mahdi, in Rabwah, previously undisclosed details have emerged about threats made against Ahmadi schools in the area by an alleged member of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Mujahid Ahmed, principal of Nasir High School in Darul Yaman, reported receiving threatening text messages on August 5, 2025. According to a police report filed on August 23, the individual claiming to represent the TTP demanded 100 million Pakistani rupees and warned of suicide attacks targeting students and staff if the demands were ignored.

The text messages, sent from an identified phone number, included chilling threats. “If you do not comply, we will attack your schools, and the demand will increase after killing the children,” one message read, according to the report. The threats also mentioned targeting school offices and other properties.

“If you do not comply, you cannot hope for help from any government agency. We will target your schools, offices, and Dar ul Ziafat,” the message read, according to the complaint.

Although the complaint was filed back in August, it was not made public until now. Police registered a case under Section 387 of the Pakistan Penal Code, addressing extortion, and Section 25-D of The Telegraph Act, 1885, for misuse of communication services.

The information comes a day after the October 10th mosque attack, where gunmen opened fire during Friday prayers, one attacker was killed while three others escaped.

Gunmen opened fire outside the main gate of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s central Mosque, “Bait-ul-Mahdi,” in Rabwah’s Gol Bazaar on Friday, according to police and local sources.

Initial reports indicate that four attackers arrived at the scene in a car and began firing indiscriminately at the entrance during Friday prayers. Security personnel stationed outside the worship site confronted the attackers, killing one gunman on the spot, while the remaining three fled.

Weapons and ammunition recovered from the attacker involved in the Rabwah mosque attack.

Police have identified the slain attacker as 37-year-old Sohaib Bin Zaigham, based on his identity documents. Zaigham was a permanent resident of Jampur in Rajanpur district, Sindh province, and was currently living on Ghoray Shah Road in Lahore.

A police officer from Chenab Nagar police station confirmed that a search operation is underway to apprehend the other suspects. “We are working diligently to ensure the safety of the community and to bring the perpetrators to justice,” the officer said.

Some Ahmadi youth performing security duties at the site sustained injuries, but no civilian fatalities were reported, police said.

District Police Officer Abdullah Ahmed and the station house officer of Chenab Nagar police station arrived at the scene to assess the situation. Security forces have since cordoned off the area, and a heavy deployment of law enforcement personnel is in place to maintain order and reassure residents.

The head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who lives in self-exile in London, condemned the attack during his weekly Friday sermon. He criticized the provincial government of Punjab and its chief minister, Maryam Nawaz, for failing to protect Ahmadis.

“The Punjab government and its chief minister are claiming that 100% of crime has been eradicated in Punjab, and that no criminals are left. However, the daily attacks on Ahmadis, who are being martyred, attacked, and whose properties are being burned down — perhaps they do not consider these as crimes,” he said.

Amir Mahmood, spokesperson for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, also condemned the attack, calling it a direct result of the ongoing hate campaign against Ahmadis. “This heinous act is yet another consequence of the relentless incitement to hatred and violence against innocent and peaceful Ahmadis,” Mahmood said.

He urged authorities to take decisive action against those responsible for spreading anti-Ahmadi propaganda through sermons, posters, and social media content.

The Ahmadiyya community in Pakistan has faced decades of severe persecution since being declared non-Muslims by the country’s constitution in 1974. They are legally barred from identifying as Muslims or calling their places of worship mosques.

Abdullah Shafiq, a 23-year-old university student and Ahmadiyya youth group leader, pleaded guilty on Thursday to 16 counts of disseminating, possessing, and producing child abuse material. The offenses, which occurred between October 2024 and March 2025, have led to his suspension from Flinders University and a ban from campus and online classes involving other students and staff.

Despite prosecution attempts to revoke bail, Shafiq was remanded on continuing bail. His defense cited ongoing university exams, medical appointments, and financial obligations, including a significant mortgage, as reasons for bail to be maintained. He is scheduled to appear in the District Court in November for sentencing.

Outside of his university studies, Shafiq was an active member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), a global youth organization affiliated with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Shafiq held the position of Nazim Tabligh, or head of preaching, for AMYA’s Australia chapter, where he was responsible for coordinating outreach and religious education programs. His role involved organizing efforts to spread the teachings of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and engaging with communities across Australia.

Shafiq also volunteered extensively with Humanity First, an international not-for-profit relief agency associated with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. As part of its Adelaide chapter, Shafiq organized a fundraiser in 2024 titled Support the Homeless this Winter—Share Warmth & Spread Hope. Shafiq’s volunteer efforts were highlighted on the fundraiser’s GoFundMe page, which encouraged donors to support the Adelaide chapter’s work. The Australia branches of Humanity First and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community did not respond to requests for comment on Abdullah Shafiq’s involvement in their organizations.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has criticized Pakistan for its ongoing, institutionalized discrimination against the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, according to its September 2025 country update. Pakistan’s Penal Code explicitly prohibits Ahmadis from identifying as Muslims or practicing their faith openly.

The report documents a series of violent attacks against Ahmadis in 2025, including the demolition of three Ahmadi mosques in Punjab within 10 days in February. In April, a mob of 400 gathered in Punjab to attack an Ahmadi mosque and lynched Laeeq Cheema, an Ahmadi man who had been documenting prior attacks on the same mosque. Police arrested 13 suspects in connection with his murder.

The report also highlights other incidents of targeted killings. In March, two Ahmadi men in Karachi were brutally assaulted by a mob during a court appearance, resulting in the death of one, Tahir Mahmood. In Sarghoda, an unidentified gunman killed Sheikh Mahmood, an Ahmadi who had received repeated death threats.

Ahmadis also face systemic harassment. In April, authorities in Punjab excluded Ahmadis from bidding on property auctions, and police registered cases against 42 Ahmadis for allegedly using a home as a place of worship. During Eid celebrations, courts ordered police to prevent Ahmadis from gathering for prayers, with 22 members arrested in Sialkot for allegedly violating these restrictions.

Forced Conversions of Hindus and Christians Persist
The USCIRF report highlights the alarming trend of forced conversions, particularly targeting young Hindu and Christian girls in Sindh and Punjab provinces. These cases often involve abduction, forced conversion to Islam, and coerced marriage to Muslim men, with little to no accountability for the perpetrators.

In June 2025, three Hindu girls and their male cousin were allegedly abducted and forcibly converted by a local teacher in Sindh. In another case that same month, two minor Hindu girls were abducted, converted, and married off, with a court demanding their parents pay a bond of 10 million rupees ($35,000) for their return.

Although Pakistan’s Parliament introduced the Islamabad Capital Territory Child Marriage Restraint Bill in May, criminalizing marriage under the age of 18, the law applies only in Islamabad. The Council of Islamic Ideology condemned the law as “un-Islamic,” undermining its potential to address forced conversions nationwide.

Blasphemy Laws Target Christians and Other Minorities
Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which impose severe penalties including death, remain a key driver of religious persecution, particularly against Christians and other minorities. The USCIRF report reveals that over 750 people were imprisoned on blasphemy charges as of 2024, with new cases continuing to emerge in 2025.

The report documents the case of four men sentenced to death in January 2025 for allegedly sharing blasphemous content through social media. It also highlights the plight of Junaid Hafeez, a university professor arrested on blasphemy charges in 2013. Despite being held in solitary confinement since 2014, his appeal has faced repeated delays.

Christians remain especially vulnerable to mob violence triggered by blasphemy accusations. In June, a 72-year-old Christian man, Anwar Kenneth, was released after serving 23 years on blasphemy charges, but others, including two Christian teens acquitted in July, remain at risk of violent reprisals.

The USCIRF calls on Pakistan to repeal its blasphemy laws, end forced conversions, and protect the rights of religious minorities. It also urges the U.S. government to redesignate Pakistan as a “Country of Particular Concern” for its systematic and egregious violations of religious freedom.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sharif expressed his belief that Trump’s leadership and efforts could pave the way for an urgent resolution to the conflict.

“I welcome President Trump’s 20-point plan to ensure an end to the war in Gaza,” Sharif wrote. “I am also convinced that durable peace between the Palestinian people and Israel would be essential in bringing political stability and economic growth to the region.”

The prime minister praised Trump’s readiness to assist in advancing peace efforts, calling the former president’s involvement “extremely important and urgent.”

Sharif also commended the role of Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in facilitating the plan, stating, “I laud President Trump’s leadership and the vital role played by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in bringing an end to this war.”

Reiterating Pakistan’s longstanding position, Sharif underlined the necessity of implementing a two-state solution for lasting peace in the region. “I strongly believe that the implementation of the two-state proposal is essential to ensure lasting peace in the region,” he added.

The statement comes as tensions in Gaza escalate, drawing international calls for a ceasefire and renewed efforts to address the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In Pakistan’s politically charged landscape, the minority Ahmadi community has once again become a scapegoat, with political parties accusing one another of alleged ties to the persecuted group. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) ‘Mission Noor’ campaign has been at the center of this controversy, with leaders leveraging religious sensitivities to discredit opponents.

The campaign, promoted as a peaceful, apolitical movement, encouraged participants to gather with their families on rooftops at 9 p.m., recite the Azaan (Islamic call to prayer), and pray for Pakistan’s salvation. Organizers framed it as an act of spiritual resistance against oppression.

However, allegations of links to the Ahmadi community have dominated the debate, with critics pointing to the campaign’s name—“Mission Noor”—and the chosen date, September 20, which coincides with significant Ahmadi milestones, including the 1948 establishment of Rabwah, their headquarters. Opposition parties accused PTI of aligning with Ahmadis, a group officially declared non-Muslim in Pakistan in 1974 and subjected to systemic marginalization ever since.

Senior PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan openly criticized the campaign’s name and timing, highlighting its alleged connections to Ahmadi history. He noted that the term “Noor” and the date September 20 coincide with significant Ahmadi milestones, including the establishment of their headquarters in Rabwah. His remarks were echoed by other PTI leaders, including Barrister Gohar Khan, who publicly withdrew his support, apologizing to Muslims who may have been offended. “I announce my disassociation from Mission Noor and apologize to those whose hearts were hurt by this matter,” he wrote in a post.

Former President Dr. Arif Alvi, in an effort to clarify his stance and distance himself from the controversy, posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“I deleted the post about giving the Azaan on September 20 at 9 PM because the name and background of this mission are controversial. My belief and commitment have always been clear: we are lovers of the Prophet ﷺ, Khatm-e-Nabuwwat is an essential part of our faith, and we have always been followers of the Madinah state and the Prophetic traditions.”

His statement sought to align himself with mainstream Islamic beliefs and reaffirm his commitment to Khatm-e-Nabuwwat, the belief in the finality of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which remains a central theme in Pakistan’s political discourse. Politicians across party lines frequently invoke this belief to bolster their Islamic credentials and counter allegations of sympathizing with Ahmadis.

Observers caution that controversies like these exacerbate the longstanding persecution of Ahmadis in Pakistan. Already marginalized, the community faces systemic discrimination and violence, and their name is regularly invoked in political battles, further deepening societal divides.

The Pathfinder Interfaith Harmony Initiative (PIHI), a flagship project of the Pathfinder Group, held its first Advisory Council meeting on September 13 at AmaaniBagh, Angoori, Islamabad. Bringing together leaders from Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, and Jewish communities, the event marked a historic step toward fostering interfaith dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence in Pakistan.

The meeting, chaired by Ikram Sehgal, Co-Chairman of the Pathfinder Group, featured discussions on promoting understanding across religious lines. Brig. (Ret.) Mujahid Alam, CEO of the Providentia Books Foundation and CEO Designate of PIHI, highlighted the initiative’s vision of collaboration among Pakistan’s diverse religious communities to address shared challenges and build a harmonious society.

PIHI is the brainchild of 15-year-old Elena Sehgal, a student at Manhattan’s Brearley Girls School, who previously spearheaded a similar initiative in New York. Her efforts inspired the creation of this groundbreaking project in Pakistan.

The Advisory Council comprises 24 members, including six women, representing a wide spectrum of faiths and sects. Among the council are nine Christians, three Sikhs, two Jews, two Hindus, one Parsi, and seven Muslims. Notable members include Dr. Marc H. Siegel and Dr. Linda Zangwill (Jewish representatives), Subhash Chander and Neelum Kumari (Hindu representatives), and MNA Isphanyar M. Bhandara, CEO of Murree Brewery (Parsi representative). Capt. (Ret.) Babar Bernard Massey, a Christian, was appointed Secretary to the Advisory Council.

Attendees remarked on the significance of the meeting, noting it was their first opportunity to engage with individuals from such a broad range of faiths. MNA Isphanyar Bhandara encouraged participants to actively build friendships and learn to coexist respectfully, emphasizing that interfaith harmony is deeply rooted in Pakistan’s history.

With its slogan, “Bridging Faiths, Building Harmony,” PIHI aims to promote peace through dialogue and understanding. This inaugural meeting set the stage for future collaboration and marked a milestone in fostering interfaith unity in the country.

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have signed a landmark Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement, pledging that any aggression against either country will be considered an aggression against both, officials said Sunday.

The pact was finalized during Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s state visit to Riyadh on September 17, following talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at Al-Yamamah Palace. The agreement aims to enhance defense cooperation and strengthen joint deterrence, reflecting a shared commitment to regional security and stability.

“This agreement reinforces the strong bond between our two nations and establishes a unified front against any threats or aggression,” said Prime Minister Sharif, emphasizing the historic partnership between the two countries.

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, allies for nearly eight decades, have deepened their defense and economic ties in recent years. According to a Reuters report, Saudi Arabia views Pakistan, a nuclear-armed nation, as a critical partner in addressing regional security challenges.

The agreement, described as a milestone in bilateral relations, also underscores the two nations’ shared goals of Islamic solidarity and long-standing cooperation. Both leaders agreed to further develop their strategic partnership by building on mutual defense, economic collaboration, and efforts to promote peace in the region.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed Saudi Arabia’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s stability and prosperity. In return, Prime Minister Sharif conveyed his gratitude for the kingdom’s hospitality and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening the relationship.

Muhammad Sharif Odeh, the National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, emphasized the need for unity among good people to confront fanaticism and extremism. “The doors of this convention are open to everyone, regardless of their religion, sect, or origin,” Odeh said. “Together, we can build bridges of understanding and mutual respect.”

In an interview with Bokra.net, Odeh addressed the difficult global and local circumstances, particularly after the events of October 7, 2025, referencing the rise in racism and extremism within Israeli society. “The conditions are very difficult, both globally and locally, and there is a state of anxiety and fear among people,” Odeh said.

He added that the convention included discussions with experts on extremism, including one focused on Israeli right-wing radicalism. Religious leaders were also present to propose potential solutions.

“These gatherings are essential to remove fear, anxiety, and unrest,” Odeh said. “They allow us to engage in dialogue and find common ground. We live together—in workplaces, schools, universities, hospitals, and pharmacies. We are part of this society.”

Odeh also stressed the importance of unity within the Arab community. “Our Arab society is bleeding. Leaders and communities must come together. Unity impacts families, communities, villages, and cities, and provides a strong foundation to face challenges.”

In Israel and the Palestinian territories, the Ahmadiyya population is estimated at over 2,000 individuals, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA. Of these, approximately 1,500 reside in Kababir, 30 in the West Bank, and 50 in the Gaza Strip.

In 2005, Sheikh Ahmed Shubash, the grand mufti of Palestine, issued a fatwa declaring the Ahmadiyya faith un-Islamic, describing its beliefs as “misguided” and “corrupt.”

Following the recent investigation into the distribution of child pornography by Usman Ahmad, a teacher at Nusrat Jehan Academy (NJA) in Rabwah, new allegations have surfaced accusing him of years of abuse against students under his care.

In an exclusive interview with Rabwah Times, a former student, who asked to remain anonymous, described witnessing horrific acts of abuse committed by Ahmad. The witness claims that dozens of students were victimized during the few months they were enrolled in Ahmad’s class, suggesting that the total number of victims could be in the hundreds. Ahmad has been teaching at NJA since at least 2011.

According to the former student, Ahmad used his position as a teacher to groom children, primarily targeting students in the 6th and 7th grades, who were around 11 to 13 years old. The witness alleged that Ahmad encouraged these students to attend private tuition sessions at his home in the Dar-ul-Rehmat neighborhood of Rabwah.

“He made himself out to be a friend, a cool uncle,” the witness said. “He would offer tips for exams, including paper questions in advance, as an incentive to attend his private tuition sessions.”

The witness further alleged that Ahmad also used his role as a badminton coach to inappropriately touch students during evening practice sessions.

The witness also implicated another teacher, referred to as “Sir A,” in the abuse. While the witness claimed Sir A was not actively involved in all incidents, he was reportedly close friends with Ahmad and occasionally participated in the abuse.

The most shocking allegations involve trips to a farmhouse near Rabwah, where Ahmad and Sir A would take students. According to the witness, “They would take turns abusing the kids during these day trips. It was like a planned event.”

The witness stated that they reported Ahmad’s behavior to the NJA principal and other school authorities, but no action was taken. “He preyed on kids who were too young to understand what was happening and too afraid to speak up,” the witness said.

Rabwah Times contacted both Nazarat Taleem and Nusrat Jehan Academy for a statement, but neither has responded so far.

Based on the witness’s account, Ahmad may have tutored approximately 10–20 students per year, they personally saw at least 4 to 8 students being abused by Ahmad. Based on this account, over his 14-year tenure at NJA, the number of victims could range from 56 to 112.

The witness described horrific details of the abuse, many of which are too graphic to publish for readers. “He was a demonic person who destroyed the lives of children,” the witness stated.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested Ahmad for his involvement in the creation and distribution of child pornography. However, his alleged accomplice, Sir A, has not yet been included in the investigation. As of now, there has been no confirmation that Ahmad or his alleged accomplice have been fired from their positions at Nusrat Jehan Academy.

Authorities in Jhelum have detained Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza, a prominent religious scholar, under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance for 30 days and later booked him on blasphemy charges, police and district officials confirmed.

The cleric, who resides in Machine Mohallah of Jhelum city and has a significant online following with over 3.1 million YouTube subscribers, was apprehended following allegations of making controversial remarks during an interview that went viral on social media.

Jhelum Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Meesam Abbas and District Police Officer Ahmed Mohiyuddin told local media that Mirza was taken into custody under Section 3 of the MPO ordinance. This provision allows authorities to detain individuals who pose a threat to public safety or order.

Shortly after his detention, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Jhelum City Police Station under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which carries the death penalty for derogatory remarks against the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The FIR also invoked Section 11 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, which criminalizes the dissemination of content that incites sectarian hatred.

The complainant alleged that Mirza had made blasphemous remarks and misinterpreted Surah al-Nisa during the viral interview, which was also uploaded to his YouTube channel. The Qur’an-O-Sunnat Research Academy, a center run by Mirza, was reportedly shut down by the police as part of the investigation.

Mirza is no stranger to controversy. In 2023, he was accused of insulting the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and downplaying the non-Muslim status of Ahmadis, though those charges were eventually dropped. In 2020, he was arrested for allegedly making derogatory remarks against religious figures but was later released on bail.

The cleric has also survived an assassination attempt in 2021 at a religious academy. The suspect was arrested, and a case of attempted murder was filed.

Blasphemy laws in Pakistan remain a sensitive issue, often criticized for their misuse and the potential for inciting violence.

The case against Mirza has drawn significant attention, with no further details released about his arrest or potential court proceedings. Authorities have yet to comment on whether additional action will be taken.

The intimate marriage of Pakistani singer Aima Baig to Zain Ahmad, founder of the fashion label Rastah, has sparked conversations about interfaith unions and Ahmadi identity in Pakistan, where the Ahmadiyya community faces systemic discrimination and societal restrictions.

Zain Ahmad, born and raised in an Ahmadi household, tied the knot with Baig in an intimate Nikah ceremony in Canada. The announcement, accompanied by heartfelt photos and captions on Instagram, was met with widespread support from fans and celebrities alike. However, among Ahmadis, the marriage is being hailed as a groundbreaking step, challenging long-standing traditions and taboos.

Marriage Breaking Barriers

Ahmadis, a minority religious group in Pakistan, face significant legal and social restrictions, including limitations on their religious practices and personal freedoms. Historically, Ahmadi youth have been required to seek community permission to marry individuals of other sects, be it Sunni, Shia, or other faiths.

“This is refreshing to see,” said a Rabwah resident and Ahmadi youth. “A successful marriage is more important than the faith of the person. A genuine connection matters more than marrying someone solely based on religion, which can lead to failed relationships and single-parent situations.”

Zain’s marriage to a pop star like Aima Baig is seen as a trendsetter for Ahmadi youth, offering a glimpse of freedom in choosing life partners. For many in Rabwah, this is the first modern-day marriage of someone they can relate to—a union defying odds and societal norms.

Ahmadi Rights Advocate

Zain Ahmad has long been vocal about Ahmadi rights. In 2014, he criticized Pakistani cleric Tahir Ashrafi in a tweet for making “false accusations” against Ahmadi beliefs, standing against the widespread misinformation targeting his community.

Despite systemic discrimination, Zain has maintained ties to Rabwah, where his extended family resides. He continues to visit and celebrate Eid with the community, even as Pakistan imposes increasing restrictions on Ahmadi religious practices.

Restrictions on Ahmadis During Eid

This year, Amnesty International reported that Ahmadis were prohibited from celebrating Eid-ul-Adha in several districts across Pakistan. Affidavits required them to refrain from purchasing animals or performing the customary sacrificial rites. Violations carried fines of up to PKR 500,000 ($1,765) or legal sanctions.

In some areas, district commissioners issued notices directing police to prevent Ahmadis from offering Eid prayers, often at the behest of extremist groups like Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). Preventive detention orders were also issued to stop Ahmadis from participating in Eid activities.

An Ahmadi in Chiniot was reportedly detained for attempting to purchase a sacrificial animal, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the community.

They are meeting with prominent members of Congress, accompanied by Dr. Asif Mahmood, a U.S.-based physician and human rights advocate.

Khan, who was ousted from office in 2022, is currently serving a 14-year sentence on charges widely criticized as politically motivated. His sons are urging U.S. lawmakers to intervene in what they describe as an erosion of democracy and judicial independence in Pakistan. Their efforts have included meetings with Reps. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), and other key figures on Capitol Hill.

“We are here to ask for your support in ensuring the release of our father and the countless others who have been unjustly imprisoned in Pakistan for their political beliefs,” Kasim Khan said during a meeting, according to social media posts.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, met with the Khan brothers and expressed concerns about the political situation in Pakistan. “I am concerned to hear that Khan remains isolated from his family, friends, attorneys, and doctors. His sons also shared that his physical health may be deteriorating.,” Sherman said in a tweet after his meeting with the Khan family.

Rep. Joe Wilson, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia, also met with the family. He later tweeted, “Grateful to meet Sulaiman Isa Khan and Kasim Khan to discuss their father. Free Imran Khan.”

The brothers are accompanied by Dr. Asif Mahmood, a U.S.-based physician and human rights advocate, who has played a key role in organizing the meetings. Mahmood, a commissioner with the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), has a history of advocacy, including helping to organize a landmark 2012 visit to Capitol Hill by Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the spiritual leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

The Khan brothers’ visit also included engagements with members of the Pakistani diaspora in the U.S., where they emphasized the importance of international pressure on Pakistan’s government. Sajjad Burki, the president of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) USA, has been coordinating many of these efforts and shared updates of the meetings on social media.

Khan, a former cricket star turned politician, remains one of Pakistan’s most popular leaders. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has faced widespread arrests and harassment since his removal from office.

The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission convened Tuesday to examine Pakistan’s intensifying political repression, with testimony from human rights advocates and international experts. Witnesses highlighted the persecution of religious minorities, particularly Ahmadis, and the ongoing crackdown on supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Commission convened was led by Co-Chairs Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Rep. James P. McGovern (D-Mass.), to examine Pakistan’s intensifying political repression. The hearing also featured remarks from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.), and Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.).

Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, an advisor to Imran Khan, detailed the systematic erosion of judicial independence and democratic norms since Khan’s ousting in 2022. “What we have witnessed, and continue to witness, is a calculated effort to crush democratic will and erase the political influence of the most popular leader in Pakistan’s history,” Bukhari said. He described a wave of arrests targeting PTI supporters, with thousands imprisoned, including Khan himself, who is serving a cumulative 27-year sentence on politically motivated charges. Bukhari also highlighted the extrajudicial killings of PTI workers and the harassment of their families.

Bukhari called on Congress to condemn the February 2024 elections as illegitimate and demand the immediate release of Khan and other political prisoners. “Imran Khan remains the single most significant democratic voice in Pakistan,” he said, warning that Pakistan’s democratic future hangs in the balance.

The hearing also highlighted the plight of Ahmadis, a religious minority often targeted under Pakistan’s discriminatory blasphemy laws. Ben Linden, Amnesty International’s Advocacy Director for Europe and Central Asia, testified that Ahmadis face increasing harassment and violence. “In 2024 alone, 344 new cases were opened following blasphemy allegations,” Linden said. Three Ahmadis have been killed since April in apparent targeted attacks, and local authorities have arrested others, including children, outside places of worship.

Ahmadi worshippers in some areas were forced to sign affidavits promising not to perform Eid prayers or rituals, Linden said. “These institutions should be protecting the rights of religious minorities, not attacking those rights,” he added.

Linden called for immediate action from the U.S. Congress. Recommendations included pressuring Pakistan to repeal blasphemy laws, release detained Ahmadis, and restore protections for political prisoners.

The U.S. State Department and human rights organizations have condemned Pakistan’s escalating human rights abuses, with bipartisan Congressional efforts underway to address the crisis. Lawmakers are considering targeted sanctions against Pakistani officials involved in these abuses.

The hearing underscored the urgency of the situation. “Pakistan’s success matters enormously, not only for its people but for regional stability,” Linden said. “The world cannot look away.”

The decomposed bodies of a young Pakistani couple were discovered last week in the desert region of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, about 15 kilometers from the India-Pakistan border. Authorities suspect the pair succumbed to extreme heat and dehydration after illegally crossing into India.

According to Jaisalmer police, the deceased were identified as 17-year-old Ravi Kumar and his 15-year-old wife, Shanti Bai. Identification documents and a phone with a Pakistani SIM card found near the bodies helped confirm their identities. The couple hailed from Ghotki district in Pakistan’s Sindh province.

Police Superintendent Sudhir Chaudhary said a man’s body was found under a tree wearing a blue kurta and trousers, while the woman’s body was located 50 feet away, dressed in a yellow traditional outfit. Both bodies were reportedly discovered face-down, and initial investigations suggest they had been dead for 8 to 10 days before being found.

The couple’s journey to India followed a domestic dispute. According to Latif Laghari, a journalist from their hometown, a quarrel over irrigating a rice crop led Ravi to leave his family home with his wife on a motorcycle. It was later revealed that the couple aimed to reunite with relatives living in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

Family members said Ravi had previously applied for an Indian visa but was denied. Rajasthan-based activists working with Pakistani Hindu migrants mentioned that the couple likely crossed the border on foot. Extreme temperatures in the region, reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), combined with a lack of water sources, are believed to have caused their deaths before they could reach a populated area. The couple’s last rites were performed in Jaisalmer with the help of local relatives.

The conservative Iranian newspaper Kayhan has claimed that software developed in India and used in Iran contains backdoors that allow sensitive data to be transmitted to Israel in real time. The report alleges that these programs, widely used in both governmental and private sectors, compromise national security by leaking critical information such as national registries, passport data, and airport systems.

According to Kayhan, investigations revealed that Indian programmers connected through Elon Musk’s Starlink network have facilitated this alleged breach. The newspaper also reported that some software used in Iran’s military and civilian sectors may have compromised equipment functionality and allowed remote operations through hidden backdoors in the systems. Similar software is reportedly in use across Gulf countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait, leading to concerns about regional surveillance.

The Kayhan report described this revelation as a “major crisis” for Gulf nations, alleging that Israel has leveraged these backdoors to monitor the movement of individuals in the region. Despite these claims, the Iranian publication noted that the Indian government has not issued any official response.

Kayhan is one of Iran’s oldest and most influential conservative newspapers, often reflecting the views of the country’s hardliners. It has a history of publishing controversial allegations and is considered closely aligned with the Iranian government.

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), emphasized Sunday that followers of all religions in Pakistan are equal citizens with full constitutional rights. Speaking at an event in Karachi, he stressed that national unity is built on equality and harmony.

“The Constitution guarantees equal rights to all citizens, and no individual or group has the authority to declare jihad. This is solely the prerogative of the state,” Lt. Gen. Chaudhry said.

Addressing representatives from various religious communities and social circles, he condemned discrimination based on ethnicity, language, or religion, calling it ignorance. “If we remain united, no force can defeat us,” he added.

During the interaction, participants expressed their solidarity with the armed forces and lauded the military’s efforts to foster interfaith harmony and national unity.

Lt. Gen. Chaudhry also accused India of sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan, noting that the military is countering such threats with modern warfare strategies. His remarks follow last month’s military conflict between Pakistan and India, which included cross-border strikes and resulted in the deaths of 40 civilians and 13 military personnel in Pakistan.

Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos during the conflict, downing six Indian fighter jets, including three Rafales. The 87-hour confrontation ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on May 10.

Participants at the Karachi event called for the continuation of such engagements to strengthen interfaith dialogue and understanding.

The alleged conversion of three Hindu sisters and their male cousin to Islam in Sindh’s Sanghar district has triggered an outcry from the local Hindu community, who claim the conversions were coerced and orchestrated.

The incident came to light on Wednesday when the four individuals — including minors aged 13 and 16 — left their home without informing their families. By the evening, they released video messages claiming they had willingly embraced Islam. However, their parents and community leaders have alleged foul play, accusing a local teacher of brainwashing and abducting the siblings.

“My son is only 13 years old and cannot understand religion,” said Hunain Kumar’s mother during an emotional press conference. She directly appealed to Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for action, urging him to help recover her child. “I want my son back,” she cried.

The mothers of the sisters said they were distraught over losing all three daughters at once. “Khaskheli has taken all of them,” one mother said, referring to the accused, identified as Farhan Khaskheli, a local computer teacher.

The Hindu Panchayat, a community leadership body, has labeled the case as not just a family tragedy but a communal crisis. “These girls are not just daughters of Hindus — they are daughters of Sindh,” said Rajesh Kumar, head of the Panchayat. He questioned whether the minors were mature enough to make such a life-altering decision and called for stricter legal protections for religious minorities.

Three minor Hindu girls and a minor boy were abducted from Shahdadpur. It has been reported that the children were converted to Islam, as videos circulating on social media claim their conversion. 1/2 pic.twitter.com/JqbLE8qQWx

According to police, the accused suspect has been arrested, and the minors have been recovered. However, the Hindu community remains unconvinced, demanding further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the conversions.

Sindh has long faced criticism for recurring incidents of forced conversions, particularly of young Hindu girls, which rights groups say are often carried out under the guise of voluntary acceptance of Islam. Critics argue that poverty, lack of legal safeguards, and societal pressures leave minorities vulnerable to exploitation.

The case has reignited calls for legislative reforms to address forced conversions. Activists and community leaders have urged the government to pass pending bills aimed at criminalizing the practice and ensuring the protection of minority rights.

Local police have registered a first information report (FIR) based on the parents’ complaints, and Sanghar SSP Ghulam Nabi Keerio has assured the Hindu Panchayat of swift action.

This incident has once again raised questions about the safety and rights of minority communities in Pakistan, as well as the urgent need for reforms to prevent such occurrences in the future.

In a passionate speech during the fifth day of the Senate’s budget session on June 18, 2025, Senator Pervez Rasheed condemned the alleged police investigation of an elderly woman’s religious beliefs during Eid-ul-Adha, calling it a gross violation of human dignity and constitutional rights.

Rasheed referred to a video showing the woman being interrogated by authorities in her own home. “In what state is authority given where an individual has to answer as to where the sacrificial meat in their home came from, and what was the faith of the individual who sent it—or the faith of the one who received it?” Rasheed asked.

He described how the woman was reportedly questioned about her belief in the finality of prophethood, the source of the meat in her home, and whether her son-in-law was an Ahmadi. She was further asked if she had given or received meat from an Ahmadi family and was made to recite the Kalima under oath to prove her truthfulness.

A woman is being harassed by police only because they suspect she’s an Ahmadi. They’re forcing her to recite the Kalima and declare she isn’t Ahmadi, and demanding proof she did Qurbani on Eid.

“Yet here we question the faith instead of looking into giving the sacrificial meat to the poor and needy,” Rasheed stated. He criticized the hardships faced by religious minorities, saying,

“The individuals who have different beliefs and are in the minority, whose beliefs differ from the majority, go through all these hardships. Their worship places are not safe, their homes are not safe, they are in danger, they are falsely implicated and spend years in prison, and sometimes they are killed.”

Rasheed called on Parliament to take decisive action to protect the rights of all citizens.

“We should take an oath today that this Parliament abolish all the laws which are used as an excuse to limit the freedoms of Pakistanis. Let’s strive for a Pakistan where each citizen living in this country would consider it their own—where they won’t be defined by their language, geography, or faith but only as a Pakistani citizen. They should belong to Pakistan, and Pakistan should belong to them,” he declared.

The senator’s speech has reignited debates on religious freedom and minority rights in Pakistan, with activists urging the government to address systemic discrimination and ensure equal treatment for all citizens under the constitution.

The Government of Pakistan has announced its formal recommendation of U.S. President Donald J. Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his decisive diplomatic intervention during the 2025 India-Pakistan crisis. Pakistani officials praised Trump’s leadership in de-escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations, calling his efforts a testament to his commitment to global peace.

The crisis erupted following what Pakistan described as “unprovoked and unlawful” aggression by India, which it said violated Pakistan’s sovereignty and resulted in civilian casualties, including women and children. In response, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, a military operation aimed at defending its territory while avoiding harm to civilians. The conflict threatened to spiral into a broader confrontation until Trump’s intervention helped secure a ceasefire.

“At a moment of heightened regional turbulence, President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship,” the Pakistani government said in a statement, crediting his diplomacy with averting a catastrophic conflict that could have endangered millions in South Asia and beyond.

This is an example tweet text. June 20, 2025

The statement also highlighted Trump’s ongoing offers to mediate on the long-standing Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which Pakistan considers central to regional instability. Islamabad emphasized that peace in South Asia is contingent on resolving the Kashmir issue in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Pakistani officials lauded Trump’s efforts as part of his legacy of pragmatic diplomacy and peace-building, pointing to his broader contributions to resolving conflicts. They expressed hope that his leadership would continue to foster stability, particularly amid global crises, including the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza and the escalating tensions involving Iran.

The nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize underscores Pakistan’s recognition of Trump’s role as a peacemaker and his commitment to conflict resolution through dialogue. Whether the U.S. president will receive the prestigious prize will be decided by the Nobel Committee in 2026.

The United Nations on Thursday issued a grave warning about the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, citing the growing humanitarian toll as missile strikes and drone attacks enter their second week. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for “maximum restraint” and urged both sides to adhere to international humanitarian law.

“The widescale, continuing attacks by Israel across Iran, and the missile and drone strikes launched in response by Iran, are inflicting severe human rights and humanitarian impacts on civilians, and risk setting the whole region ablaze,” Türk said in a statement. He called for a return to negotiations to end the violence.

The conflict has claimed hundreds of lives and caused widespread destruction. Iranian officials report at least 224 deaths, though human rights groups say the toll is likely higher. In Israel, 24 people have been killed, and over 840 have been injured. Civilian infrastructure has been heavily damaged, and evacuation warnings in Tehran have caused panic, leading to fuel shortages and hours-long traffic jams.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) expressed concern over displacement within Iran and across its borders. “Iran has long hosted the largest Afghan refugee population in the world. Now, its own people are experiencing devastation and fear,” UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch said. He urged neighboring countries to offer protection to those fleeing violence and adhere to the principle of non-refoulement.

The conflict is triggering regional instability, with reports of missile launches from Yemen toward Israel and rising tensions involving armed groups in Iraq. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that the escalation is adding pressure to a region already grappling with humanitarian challenges, reduced funding, and limited operational capacity.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire, urging both sides to “step back from the brink” to prevent further suffering and displacement. As the violence intensifies, humanitarian agencies are struggling to meet the needs of affected populations, underscoring the urgent need for de-escalation.

Pakistan is preparing contingency plans to secure oil imports via pipelines from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in case the Strait of Hormuz is closed due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, officials said Thursday.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which about 20% of the world’s crude oil passes, could be blocked if the conflict escalates into a broader war. Pakistani officials are exploring alternative routes to ensure steady oil supplies and avoid disruptions to the country’s energy needs.

“Pakistan could use Saudi Arabia’s East-West Crude Oil Pipeline and the UAE’s Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline to bypass the Strait of Hormuz,” a government official said, referring to the pipelines that transport oil to safer ports away from the waterway.

Officials assured there is no immediate threat of higher oil prices for Pakistan, as negotiations with global suppliers are ongoing to stabilize prices and ensure smooth deliveries. Additionally, Pakistan is exploring new oil storage options, including repurposing abandoned power plants, which could store up to one million barrels of furnace oil.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a high-level committee, led by Finance Minister Aurangzeb, to monitor the Israel-Iran conflict and its potential impact on global oil markets. “The government is committed to ensuring energy security and will take all necessary steps to protect the country’s interests,” a spokesperson said.

The strikes, focused on North Waziristan near the Afghan border, aim to curb the resurgence of militant groups like Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Military officials said drones have been instrumental in eliminating high-value targets while reducing risks to ground forces. In a recent operation, drones struck a hideout in the Shawal Valley, killing at least five suspected militants linked to cross-border attacks.

Local residents reported hearing drones and seeing compounds destroyed in the strikes. Analysts view the campaign as a shift toward precision tactics, reflecting Pakistan’s growing indigenous drone capabilities.

The TTP has increased attacks in the region, including a suicide bombing earlier this month that killed 12 soldiers. Pakistan’s government defended the strikes as necessary for national security but promised to minimize civilian harm.

The escalation has drawn concern from human rights groups and the international community, warning of potential civilian casualties and broader instability in the fragile border areas.

Pakistan on Friday called for restraint and dialogue during an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting convened to address escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and retaliatory attacks on Israeli cities.

Pakistan’s UN Ambassador, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, condemned Israel’s actions as “provocative and destabilizing,” warning that such aggression poses a grave threat to regional peace. Ahmad reaffirmed Iran’s right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter and criticized what he described as Israel’s “pattern of unilateral militarism” in the Middle East.

“These attacks, carried out amidst ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic resolution to Iran’s nuclear program, are morally reprehensible and contrary to international norms,” Ahmad said. He urged the Security Council to hold Israel accountable and to support diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions.

The emergency session followed Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, including the Natanz enrichment site, which reportedly killed several Iranian officials, nuclear scientists, and civilians. Iran responded with ballistic missile strikes on Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv, exacerbating fears of a broader regional conflict.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo warned the Council of the risks of further escalation, calling for maximum restraint and emphasizing the importance of diplomacy. “A peaceful resolution through negotiations remains the best path to ensuring stability and preventing a greater conflagration,” she said.

Pakistan’s ambassador echoed the call for diplomacy, urging all parties to prioritize dialogue over conflict. “This Council must act decisively to prevent further escalation and deny Israel the impunity to operate outside the bounds of international law,” Ahmad said.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi also briefed the Council, raising concerns about the safety of targeted nuclear facilities. Grossi warned that attacks on such sites could have catastrophic global consequences and offered the IAEA’s support to ensure nuclear safety and security.

The United States defended Israel’s actions, describing them as necessary for self-defense, while reiterating its commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Russia, however, condemned the strikes as a violation of international law and warned of the potential for a “large-scale nuclear catastrophe.”

Pakistan has long maintained close ties with Iran and has consistently advocated for peaceful resolutions to conflicts in the Middle East. Ahmad’s comments reinforced Pakistan’s commitment to regional stability and opposition to unilateral military actions.

As tensions rise, the Security Council remains divided on how to respond, with Pakistan and other nations emphasizing the need for restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts.

A PIA spokesperson confirmed that a special flight was dispatched to Mashhad, a northeastern Iranian city, to evacuate Pakistani pilgrims and other citizens affected by the deteriorating security situation in the region.

The repatriation efforts come amid heightened fears of potential fallout from the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, which has raised security concerns and disrupted travel across the Middle East.

According to PIA officials, the special flight transported 216 passengers from Mashhad to Lahore. The airline plans to continue operations to facilitate the return of remaining Pakistani citizens in the coming days.

Authorities in Pakistan have assured families of stranded individuals that measures are being taken to provide safe transport back to the country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating efforts with Iranian officials to ensure the smooth evacuation of Pakistani nationals.

The conflict, which has seen heightened rhetoric and military activity, has prompted several countries to issue travel advisories and organize evacuation plans for their citizens in the region.

PIA has urged passengers to stay in touch with its helpline for updates on flight schedules and further instructions.

A Punjab government agency is facing criticism after excluding members of the Ahmadiyya community from participating in an upcoming auction for residential and commercial plots, including in Chenabnagar, the community’s headquarters.

The Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA) published the advertisement on April 17, explicitly stating that only Muslims are eligible to bid for 17 plots in Jhang, Chiniot, Shorkot, and Chenabnagar. The advertisement also warned that any bids submitted by Ahmadis would be canceled, and their deposits would not be refunded if their identity was later discovered.

The move has drawn backlash from human rights activists, legal experts, and minority rights groups, who argue that the policy violates Pakistan’s constitutional guarantee of equality. Critics say the exclusion of Ahmadis reflects increasing institutionalized discrimination against the community, which has faced decades of persecution in Pakistan.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and other groups have called for the immediate removal of the discriminatory clause, stating that it contradicts both the country’s Constitution and international treaties. Observers say such policies deepen religious divisions and further marginalize minority groups.

Despite the backlash, neither PHATA officials nor the Punjab government have issued any response. PHATA Director General Sikandar Zeeshan has not been available for comment on the matter.

The Ahmadiyya community, which identifies as Muslim but is legally classified as non-Muslim in Pakistan, has faced systemic persecution, including restrictions on worship and economic opportunities. This latest move is being seen as an alarming escalation of discrimination at the official level.
