City Stickers and Parking Tags

Just a reminder that City Stickers expire at the end of May. City Stickers are required for those who live or work within the Murray city limits. This included students living on-campus and Murray State student workers. Stickers are required for all vehicles, including motorcycles, utilized within the city limits.

Sticker cost is $50 for passenger vehicles and $25 for motorcycles. Stickers may be purchased at 104 N. 5th Street in the City Hall building. Be sure to take the following information with you:

1. Year of Vehicle
2. Make of Vehicle
3. Model of Vehicle
4. License Plate Number

Parking registration for Murray State is also open. You can begin registering online through myGate for your Fall 2013 permits. Employees can begin picking up their tags on July 1st. What Students Need to Know About Canvas

The Canvas Learning Management System will replace Blackboard beginning with Summer 2013 courses starting on May 13th. To access Canvas, go to http://racernet.murraystate.edu and click on the Canvas tab.

How do I get logged in or create a password? We have instructions available. The easiest way is to visit myGate and change your password there.

Can I access my courses now? All summer courses have been created and students have been added to them. You should see them in Canvas under Courses. If you have several or to see Fall courses, click on View All Courses. More details here.

What if I don't know how to use Canvas? Here are some options: visit our Canvas Student Orientation course, search through the Canvas Student Guide, or contact the Helpdesk at (270) 809-2346.

Incomplete Grades in myGate

As faculty prepare to enter spring final grades, we wanted to let you know about some new options instructors have for assigning I (incomplete) grades.

If an instructor enters a grade of I (incomplete) for any student(s) in their roster, they will see a Final Grade pop-up screen asking them for additional information. If your student has earned enough points for a passing grade without submitting any additional work, you have the option of inputting that grade.

Here is an example:
Your student has earned enough points for a C grade at this point in time, but has not submitted all work. The student has discussed with you the option of an incomplete grade. You have agreed to give the student additional time to submit the missing work. If this work is not submitted by the deadline, the student's grade will automatically change to the default grade you entered, after the last day to change an Incomplete Grade.

Canvas is coming! Summer 2013

If you haven't already heard, Murray State will be moving from Blackboard to a new Learning Management System called Canvas beginning with summer courses. Anyone who missed some of the early discussions can see more information at http://campus.murraystate.edu/canvasresources.htm

So what does this mean for you?

Students will be glad to see that Canvas has some great resources for them. You can get login instructions here but remember that students won't be able to login for summer until May 13th. To access a summer course, it must first be published by the instructor. A Quick Start Guide is available from Canvas to help you learn the new system. Canvas also has mobile apps that are free for students for both Android and iOS devices.

Faculty can begin working in Canvas now! ALL courses have been created for Summer and Fall 2013. There is no need to fill out a request form. No More RUN Codes

The Registrar's Office is excited to announce new functionality for Advising Holds in myGate. Previously, students were required to visit their advisor and obtain a RUN code in order to register. Now, advisors have the ability to remove Advising Holds in myGate for their primary advisees.

Here are a few things to note:

Advising Holds are best accessed by clicking on Advisee Listing in the Links Channel on the Teaching/Advising tab in myGate.
Only primary academic advisors are to remove an Advising Hold.
If you remove a hold in error, please contact Kristi Jackson at 809-3762 or kjackson@murraystate.edu.

More About Canvas

If you remember, a few months ago we shared some information about efforts on campus to evaluate a learning management system called Canvas. The original post can be found here. Well, we're back to let you know how it is going and share with you some ways you can learn more.

We are in the middle of a large pilot as we speak with over 60 courses and more than 1,500 students. So far the response has been very positive. If you'd like to hear some of the faculty and student comments, you can view these clips from a lunch meeting we had with pilot faculty last month. And if you haven't read Linda Miller's guest blog post from the Roundabout newsletter, you can read it online here.

So what's next? We continue to seek faculty and student opinion on Canvas. Next week we have several open forum-style meetings scheduled around campus. We invite faculty and students to come, see a demonstration of Canvas, hear from faculty using it now and ask lots of questions. A schedule of meetings is available on our Canvas Resources page.

Midterm Grades

Teaching/Advising Tab Updates

Programmers and the Registrar's Office have been busy adding updates to our myGate system this spring. Last week we told you about consolidated credentials. This week we want to tell you about some updates to the Teaching/Advising tab for faculty and advisors. If you haven't logged in to myGate in a while, this is what you can expect to see on the Teaching/Advising tab:

Cleaner interface with timely announcements
Improved student search to include search by M#
Easier access to Overrides, Degree Audits & Test Scores
Expanded Grade History to include midterm grades and grade changes
More accurate Advisee Listings with lots of quick-access links

Most of these changes were a result of great feedback from faculty and advisors across campus. We love your feedback and have even created an email address where you can send your ideas. Consolidated Credentials

myGate added something new this week - the option for users to use a tool to "consolidate" their credentials. Have you tried it yet?

We've been working toward a consolidated username and password at Murray State for some time and this is only the first step. In this release, we hope users will take advantage of the option to have a single password. At the same time, we've kept the option for users to set their passwords individually. We are calling this a "soft roll-out" because it gives users a chance to try something new on their timeline when they feel most comfortable.

There are some things to consider before you choose to consolidate your passwords. We've created a list of common questions to help you decide what option is best for you. New Collaborate Feature - Convert Recordings

Got a class that uses Collaborate and want to listen to recordings on your mobile device? Need to get your course recordings in MP4 format?

Collaborate now offers users the option to download class recordings in MP3 or MP4 format. Just open your Blackboard class and locate the appropriate recording. Did You Miss the Emergency Alert?

With the recent storm warnings and weather situations, we wanted to remind everyone that you can sign-up for Emergency Alert Notifications delivered as a text message to your phone. Did you sign-up but didn't receive an alert during the latest warnings? You may have missed an important step in the sign-up process. Check out these instructions for more information.

Did you know Murray State offers Emergency Mobile Alerts to its employees and students? If you have a phone capable of receiving SMS text messages, you can sign-up!

With so many new faces on campus, we thought we should run this blog post again as a reminder to get signed up. By signing up for emergency mobile alerts, users will receive a text message to their personal phones in the event of a campus emergency. Alerts will only be sent for emergency notification. Events that would trigger an alert would include a tornado, fire on campus or other life-threatening situation.

So, how do you sign-up? Glad you asked. Sign-up is only available in myGate. Log in to your myGate account and go to the Home tab. A box called Mobile Alerts is available. Enter your mobile number and click submit.

You are almost done, but there is one more step...within 24 hours you will receive a text message asking you to confirm that you want to receive emergency notifications. YOU MUST RESPOND WITH "Y" TO THE MESSAGE. If you don't respond, you will not receive any mobile alerts from Murray State.

New Blackboard Feature!

Now that our upgrade to Blackboard SP10 is complete, we wanted to take a moment to show you one of the new features now available in the system - Video Everywhere!

Video Everywhere is a feature of the Content Editor that controls a user's webcam. Users can record a video on the fly using a webcam and have it seamlessly embedded in course materials, interactions, and feedback through the Content Editor. Users can also reuse recorded videos by choosing from one's own "library" of videos. The videos are stored privately in YouTube, using your RacerMail/Google account.

Getting Started with Spring 2013

Welcome back, students! If you haven't marked your calendar yet, classes start on Monday! Here are a few things you need to remember as we kick-off a new semester.

Network Accounts Have Been Reset - All student accounts were reset on Thursday, January 10th. There are two ways to reset your account: 1) Log in to myGate from home and reset your password on the Home tab 2) Log in to a campus computer with username - murray, password - racers and access myGate to reset your password. More instructions are available here.

Resident Students Must Register with Bradford - Personal computers, gaming devices and tablets that are using the ResNet network in the dorms must pass anti-virus and anti-spyware certification through the Bradford System. Make sure your anti-virus/anti-spyware software is updated and you've reset your Network password before you try to connect to the internet in the dorms.

Confirm Your Class Schedule - Students can locate scheduled classes on the Academics tab in myGate. Here are some instructions.

Check Blackboard for Classes - Remember, some instructors DO NOT use Blackboard. Some instructors may not make their courses available until the first day of class. To access Blackboard, log in at https://blackboard.murraystate.edu with your myGate username and Blackboard password. If you've forgotten your password, click on the Forgot Your Password link and fill-out option #2 only. Once you submit, an email will be sent to your @murraystate.edu email account with reset instructions. Blackboard Upgrade Coming Soon!

On Thursday, January 10th, we will be upgrading our Blackboard system. This will be the Service Pack 10 update for those who are counting. The plan is to take the system down on Thursday afternoon after winter-term grades run. The upgrade is only scheduled to take a few hours so there is a good chance it will be back up on Thursday night or Friday morning at the latest.

So what can EVERYONE expect to see in this new version?

New Navigation - User's will see a new navigation menu in the upper-right corner of the myBlackboard page. Pictured here, this menu provides one-click access to courses, settings, help and notifications. In addition, Action Links next to the home icon inside each course allows users to switch quickly from course-to-course.

Content Editor Updates - Adding content just got easier. The content editor has improved pasting from Microsoft Word, a new mathML equation editor, Video Everywhere for embedding and recording webcam audio/video and improved integration with YouTube.

Interactive Calendar - The calendar has been completely redesigned to be more user-friendly. Assignments created by instructors automatically appear on the calendar. Due dates can be changed directly on the calendar with drag-n-drop functionality. Users can also subscribe to calendar events through an iCal feed.

Collaborate Goes Mobile - Participants can now join Blackboard Collaborate sessions from any iOS mobile device or tablet.

Just for FACULTY....

Clickable Rubrics - New interactivity means with just a click you can grade assignments and provide feedback. This will be a real time-saver.

Automatic Re-Grading - Test questions and answers can be edited, dropped or re-valued directly from the test canvas. All submitted tests will be regraded and information updated automatically.

Other Enhancements - A new roll-over interface creates a cleaner look. Icons will appears as needed when you roll-over items on the pages. Course copy and export areas now include a time-saving "select all" option and several new reports are available for student progress.

Unplug before you leave!

Even though you will most likely be away from campus over the holiday break, there are some simple ways you can help reduce energy use here on campus.

What you can do:
Empty, defrost, and unplug your refrigerators.
Turn off all lights.
Unplug all TVs, DVD players, computers, printers, space heaters, etc.
Make sure all exterior windows are closed and firmly latched.

If you have special conditions that require the temperatures in your area to be above 50° F, please notify Facilities Management by calling 4291.

With your help we will be able to reduce the amount of energy the university consumes while also saving our natural resources.

Calendar Dates

It is the final week of classes already, and we can't believe how quickly the semester has passed. We've put down some frequently asked questions about the end of the semester.

When are my final exams? See the Fall Final Exam Schedule online.

Where can I find my final grades? Grades will be available in myGate on Tuesday, December 18th. Here are some instructions for viewing grades: http://support.murraystate.edu/knowledgemanager/questions.php?questionid=146 Faculty must submit grades on or before Monday, December 17th.

When will offices be closed? Campus offices will close beginning on Wednesday, December 19th. Offices will reopen on Wednesday, January 2nd.

Evaluating Canvas

Have you heard anyone talking about Canvas on campus? Canvas is an LMS system that has gotten a lot of interest from other higher-ed institutions and at national conferences we attend. Here's some information we'd like to share.

What is an LMS? LMS stands for Learning Management System. Any software application or web-based technology that we use in the planning, delivery or assessment of the learning process could be considered an LMS. Blackboard is the current LMS in use at Murray State.

What is Canvas? Canvas is an LMS product from a company called Instructure. Their help guides explain a lot about how the product works. http://guides.instructure.com/

Why are we talking about another LMS when we already have one? We are always keeping our eye out for products and services that offer our faculty and students things they need or may be asking for. For several years, Blackboard has been, in our opinion, the best option available. As this new product, Canvas, is gaining popularity we feel it only responsible to investigate its merits and options. No doubt on this campus we could find many people that love Blackboard. But we also know we have many that are very vocal about their interest in something they feel would be better. We'd like a chance to let faculty and students look at the options and give us feedback.

What are the main differences between Blackboard and Canvas? Blackboard and Canvas share many features that almost all LMS products have. One of the biggest differences in Blackboard and Canvas deals with updates to the product. Blackboard releases major software updates a few times a year that require downtime to implement, usually when we have a break in classes at Christmas or in the summer. Canvas releases incremental changes every other Saturday that do not require system downtime.

Blackboard at our campus is hosted on our servers by a third-party hosting service. Canvas is a cloud-hosted product similar to the way our RacerMail is managed.

Who is using Canvas? Instructure's website has reviews from a few of their 200+ customers. If you click on the school logo you can see a little bit about how they became Canvas schools. http://www.instructure.com/reviews-higher-education

With just three weeks until Thanksgiving (gasp!), we thought we'd throw out some important dates coming your way.

November 4th: Daylight Savings Time Ends. Don't forget to set your clocks back 1 hour. The time actually changes at 2 a.m. but most of us here in the office change ours before we go to bed on Saturday night. Enjoy that extra hour of sleep!

It is quick and easy to update your personal information in myGate. You'll find options for updating your billing, mailing and diploma addresses as well as your emergency contact info and marital status. If you've had some changes in your life recently or you just want to double-check your info, you can do it all from myGate.

Employees should go to the Employee tab in myGate. Students will update their info on the Academics tab. You'll find a link to change your Personal Information by clicking on the link titled, "Click here to log in to Self-Service Banner in the Self-Service Banner channel. There are lots of opportunities for students and employees on-campus when it comes to your health. Here are just a few:

Wellness Center - Take advantage of exercise equipment, fitness classes and pool access at the Susan E. Bauernfeind Student Recreation and Wellness Center. All you need to use the Wellness Center is your student ID. A calendar listing of classes is available on their website here.

Sports - Intramural sports is a great way to stay active and relieve stress. Forms and deadlines for fall sports are available on the Campus Recreation website.

Mental Health - Adjusting to changes in college life can be stressful. Homesickness, anxiety and relationship issues are often part of the college experience. Our campus Counseling Center is a great place to visit if you or someone you know is struggling with these or other issues. Contact information is available online.

Free Health Fair - Racer Wellness will host a Health Fair for employees and their spouses on October 17th from 7:30am - 12:30pm in the Curris Center Large Ballroom. Those participating in the blood draw for total cholesterol should fast 12 hours. Other tests include hearing screening, diabetes screening, DermaScan, bone density and more.

Helpdesk Top Calls

We've been getting lots of calls this week to the Helpdesk. We thought we'd share what we've been hearing in case it might be troubling you too. Here's what users on campus are struggling with this week:

Can't Access My Blackboard Course. - Blackboard courses are created "unavailable" to students to give faculty time to make sure their materials are ready before students enter the course. This means each instructor must make their course available in order for students to be able to access it. If you know your instructor is using Blackboard but you can't access it, please contact the instructor to make sure they are using Blackboard and that it is available. Instructions for making courses available can be found in our Support Site.

I'm Only Seeing Announcements in my Blackboard Course. - Students who are not able to see the navigation buttons in their courses have probably collapsed the left-side menu by accident. To correct this, please follow these instructions.

I'm Scheduling This Week, What Do I Do? - Before you can schedule for classes, you will need to contact your advisor and get a RUN code. This code will be required when you schedule for classes. How do I set-up my accounts? - Users at Murray State have access to the Network (MSUNET2k), the myGate campus portal, RacerMail email and the Blackboard Learning Management System. All of these systems use the same username but all have different passwords. All of the passwords for these accounts can be managed on the Home tab in myGate. Emergency Alerts Available

Did you know Murray State offers Emergency Mobile Alerts to its employees and students? If you have a phone capable of receiving SMS text messages, you can sign-up!

With so many new faces on campus, we thought we should run this blog post again as a reminder to get signed up. By signing up for emergency mobile alerts, users will receive a text message to their personal phones in the event of a campus emergency. Alerts will only be sent for emergency notification. Events that would trigger an alert would include a tornado, fire on campus or other life-threatening situation.

So, how do you sign-up? Glad you asked. Sign-up is only available in myGate. Log in to your myGate account and go to the Home tab. A box called Mobile Alerts is available. Enter your mobile number and click submit.

You are almost done, but there is one more step...within 24 hours you will receive a text message asking you to confirm that you want to receive emergency notifications. YOU MUST RESPOND WITH "Y" TO THE MESSAGE. If you don't respond, you will not receive any mobile alerts from Murray State.

How do you know you are signed up? We have a test of our emergency systems coming up soon. In September, there will be a fall quarterly test of the system. Mobile alerts will also be tested during this time.
