Cars compete on (closed) public roads or off-road areas run on a point-to-point format where participants and their co-drivers "rally" to a set of points, leaving in regular intervals from start points.

A rally is typically conducted over a number of "special stages" of any terrain, which entrants are often allowed to scout beforehand at reduced speeds compiling detailed shorthand descriptions of the track or road as they go. These detailed descriptions are known as "pace notes." During the actual rally, the co-driver reads the pace notes aloud (using an in-helmet intercom system) to the driver, enabling them to complete each stage as quickly as possible. Competition is based on lowest total elapsed time over the course of an event's special stages, including penalties.

The top series is the World Rally Championship (WRC), but there also regional championships and many countries have their own national championships. Some famous rallies include the Monte Carlo Rally, Rally Argentina, Rally Finland and Rally GB. Another famous event (actually best described as a "rally raid") is the Paris-Dakar Rally. There are also many smaller, club level, categories of rallies which are popular with amateurs, making up the "grass roots" of motor sports. Cars at this level may not comply fully with the requirements of group A or group N homologation. Rallying is the most widely used motor sport around the world as it can race on any circuit type. As well as the WRC other major rally events include the British Rally Championship, Intercontinental Rally Challenge, African Rally Championship, Asia-Pacific Rally Championship and endurance rally events like the Dakar Rally.

Mekong Melody wins the 2010 Dance Smartly Stakes

July 18, 2010

On Sunday afternoon, a field of 6 older fillies and mares went 1 1/8 miles around one turn of Woodbine's E.P. Taylor Turf Course in the $300,000 Dance Smartly Stakes (G2). Gallorette Handicap (G3) and New York Stakes (G2) third place finisher Ave was sent off as the 6-5 favorite over 3-1 second choice Points of Grace, fourth in the Nassau Stakes (G2) at Woodbine last out, and 7-2 third choice Gypsy's Warning, off a win in the Eatontown Handicap (G3) at Monmouth Park in May.

Jockey Jim McAleney sent First Circle to the lead soon after the start, and she set early fractions of 24.05, 46.27, and 1:09.15 while being pressed by Points of Grace along the hedge and 6-1 Mekong Melody to her outside. On the far turn, First Circle tired badly and faded to finish last, as Mekong Melody moved up to take over the lead, opening up a 1 length advantage in mid stretch through 1 mile in 1:33.23. Favorite Ave, who raced in fifth early just 2 lengths back, came out wide for the drive to launch an all-out drive for the finish, but the photo determined that Mekong Melody held her off by a nose in 1:46.09 over firm going. It was another length back to Points of Grace third.

Rachel Alexandra wins the 2010 Lady's Secret Stakes

July 24, 2010

2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra faced 6 other fillies and mares on Saturday in the $400,000 Lady's Secret Stakes at Monmouth Park. An announced crowd of 12,859 was on hand, artificially inflated by "spinners" there for the Rachel Alexandra T-shirt giveaway, under sunny skies and temperatures in the high 90's with high humidity. Rachel Alexandra was sent off as the 1-10 favorite in this 1 1/8 mile main track feature, off her win at Churchill Downs in the Fleur de Lis Stakes (G2), over 8-1 Queen Martha, an allowance winner last out, and 12-1 Stage Trick, third in the Obeah Stakes (G3) at Delaware.

Rachel Alexandra sat just a length behind and to her outside, while Stage Trick stalked the front pair in third. On the far turn Rachel Alexandra eased on past Queen Martha, taking over the lead at the 1/4 pole. Through the stretch, Rachel Alexandra pulled away to win by 3 lengths at the line, completing the 1 1/8 mile trip in 1:49.78 over the fast track. A field of 7 Canadian-foaled 3-year-olds contested this 1 3/16 mile main track feature under sunny skies with temperatures in the 70's. Queen's Plate winner Big Red Mike was sent off as the 9-10 favorite off 2 straight stakes wins starting with the Plate Trial. The first race ever organized was on April 28, 1887 by the chief editor of Paris publication Le Vélocipède, Monsieur Fossier. It ran 2 kilometers from Neuilly Bridge to the Bois de Boulogne. It was won by Georges Bouton of the De Dion-Bouton company, in a car he had constructed with Albert, the Comte de Dion, but as he was the only competitor to show up it is rather difficult to call it a race. Paris-Rouen. World's first motor-race, Georges Lemaître classified 1st in his Peugeot 3hp

On July 22, 1894, the Parisian magazine Le Petit Journal organised what is considered to be the world's first car race from Paris to Rouen. Sporting events were a tried and tested form of publicity stunt and circulation booster. Pierre Giffard, the paper's editor, promoted it as a Competition for Horeseless Carriages (Concours des Voitures sans Chevaux) that were not dangerous, easy to drive, and cheap during the journey. Thus it blurred the distinctions between a reliability trial, a general event and a race, but the main prize was for the first across the finish line in Rouen. 102 people paid the 10 franc entrance fee.

69 cars started the 50 km (31 mi) selection event that would show which entrants would be allowed to start the main event, the 127 km (79 mi) race from Paris to Rouen. The entrants ranged from serious manufacturers like Peugeot, Panhard or De Dion to amateur owners, and only 25 were selected for the main race.

The race started from Porte Maillot and went through the Bois de Boulogne. Count Jules-Albert de Dion was first into Rouen after 6 hours and 48 minutes at an average speed of 19 km/h. He finished 3’30” ahead of Georges Lemaître (Peugeot), followed by Doriot (Peugeot) at 16’30”, René Panhard (Panhard) at 33’30’’ and Émile Levassor (Panhard) at 55’30”. The official winners were Peugeot and Panhard as cars were judged on their speed, handling and safety characteristics, and De Dion's steam car needed a stoker which was forbidden.

RACE

Welcome to my site ......
"its about Race"
