Lorem Ipsum - All the Facts

Web designers and web programmers must be familiar with these words, lorem ipsum. The words usually used as temporary text put on a website before they are replaced with the correct one. But, do you know where the words come from? I searched through the web and found an article explained the details and the origin as well of the words. So I quoted the article and put it here, in my blog.

What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Where does it come from?
Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.

Why do we use it?
It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Basic Processor Overclocking Guidelines

This tutorial was initially made by my friend, Caesar. He is quite good at tinkering computer hardware. He learned overclocking by joining various overclocking forums on the internet, reading through PC magazines, and of course, self-experimenting his very own old-but-good-enough PC.

So I thought of sharing this tutorial to all of you guys who are interested in overclocking.

Please note that I will only cover the basic guidelines for Processor overclocking. In case you find some difficult terms, I've already provided a simple glossary at the end of this guideline to help you.

So, let's start reading! (^_^)

Here are the steps:

1. Make sure you're not using a laptop/notebook or branded OEM PC.

Please keep in mind that OVERCLOCKING WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY! Now that you understand the risk, you may continue reading...

Laptop / Notebook and Branded OEM PCs are not able to be overclocked because they usually have limited BIOS options and the hardware are less durable than self-built PCs. Though some companies claimed their products can be overclocked, it is still not recommended, because the warranty is usually not valid anymore if the damage is caused by overclocking.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Please collect detailed technical information of your hardware as much as possible to know the limit of your hardware.
Make sure you got a stable electric supply to your PC
Please use "pure power" power supply unit
Make sure you got a decent CPU Cooling Unit, good quality thermal paste, and smooth case airflow

CPU-Z

Please download SpeedFan. This software is used to help you monitors your processor's and overall system's temperature.
Please download Orthos. This software is used to test how stable your overclock settings.
Please go find and get a hold on your motherboard user manual, IT'S IMPORTANT!
Please re-read the text from the beginning, I'm serious... Now let's move on to the next part of this guide...

There two ways in overclocking your processor:

1. BIOS based overclocking. In BIOS based overclocking, you "only" need to fine tune the settings of various variables of your processor in the BIOS' menu.

PROS:
- Higher overclocking possibilities.

CONS:
- Extreme risk of damaging your hardware for inexperienced users.
- Higher difficulties in the overclocking process itself.
- Will void your warranty.

2. Software based overclocking. In software based overclocking, you can easily and safely overclock your processor with the help of various software. Some of today's hardware manufacturer may include their very own version of overclocking software to help inexperienced user in overclocking their hardware.
Since each manufacturers come up with different software, the method to overclock the hardware was different too.
For you who used older hardware that didn't have that kind of software, you can use ClockGen (you can download it here) to help you in overclocking your processor.

PROS:
- Safer and easier way to overclock your hardware.

CONS:
- Limited overclocking possibilities.
- Will still void your warranty.

Please note that I will only cover the BIOS based overclocking method. Why? Because as I already mentioned above, Software based overclocking (especially those that use software included with the hardware you purchased) is different from each other.
While for those who use ClockGen, you will "only" need to "play" with the sliders that control the clock speed frequency of your processor's clock speed frequency.

Here are the steps for BIOS based overclocking:

1. Getting into the BIOS and getting familiar with it:

To get into the BIOS screen menu, press Del button on your keyboard before your PC load the OS. (NOTE: Some BIOS would need different keyboard's key to access the BIOS screen menu, please read the manual of your motherboard)
Now that you're in the BIOS screen menu, please take your time to explore and getting familiar with the various settings' options there. PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE ANY SETTINGS FIRST!

2. Finding the Options and Tuning it:

After you explore the BIOS screen menu, please select the options that contain the settings of your processor's clock speed frequency and processor's voltage. Since there are various different BIOS manufacturers, the name of the mentioned option may different from each other, so please refer to your motherboard user manual.
When you finally found the option to control the processor's clock speed frequency and processor's voltage, we'll first "play" around a bit with the processor's clock speed frequency.
Increase only your processor's clock speed frequency first with 2% increment.
Save the settings you just changed, reboot the PC, and load your OS.
If your OS loaded perfectly, try to run some "heavy" applications (video/audio converters, Photoshop, video/audio editors, etc) or games (not the games built-in from your OS, Flash-based games, or mini games from Gamehouse, PlayFish, etc).
If all of those applications and games run just fine, then we may go back to the first step on this part of "Finding the Options and tuning it"
Keep increasing the increment of your processor's clock speed frequency, until you finally can't load up your OS or until you got problems while running those "heavy" applications and games.
To return to the BIOS menu after the failure, first turn off your PC (by pressing and holding the power button down) and clear the CMOS (please refer to your motherboard user manual on how to reset the CMOS).
Since all of your previously changed settings are now reverted to default, try to set all of the settings to last point where your overclocked system works perfectly.
Now we're getting more serious. It's time to play with the voltage of your processor! Let's increase your processor core voltage by 2.5V at a time while still using the same processor's clock speed frequency settings.
Then repeat steps 4 and 5 again, until you finally can't load up your OS or until you got problems while running those "heavy" applications and games.
If all of those applications and games run just fine, you can increase the increment of your processor's clock speed frequency again. If it fails, go back to step 8 and 9, and try to increase the processor's core voltage by another 2.5V at a time with the same processor's clock speed frequency settings.
When you tune the processor's core voltage, it is necessary for you to load up your OS and run Orthos for at least 3 hours non-stop (for more serious overclocking and to find a rock-solid overclocking settings, run Orthos for a whole week non-stop. No, I'm not joking).
If you got an error or your system stop responding, try to reduce the processor's clock speed frequency along with the processor's core voltage.
Keep running the Orthos until you found the perfectly stable overclock settings.

Those are the basics of processor's overclocking. All you need to do is to increase the processor's clock speed frequency. Once the system fails, increase the processor's core voltage. Again, increase the processor's clock speed frequency. Keep repeating those steps, until you feel satisfied with the speed improvement you've gained and have a rock-solid overclocking performance.

LAST WARNING!!!

- Do this overclocking procedures at your own risk! I will not be liable to any damages resulted because of the overclocking process!

- Remember, these overclocking procedures will ultimately void your warranty!

- Please keep in mind that different PC setup will result in different overclocking possibilities and results.

- Please always refer to your hardware's user manual as it provides essential information that can be useful in this overclocking procedure.

- Please collect detailed technical information of your hardware as much as possible to know the limit of your hardware.

- Please do not overclock your PC for daily usage or run them 24/7.

GLOSSARY

* Overclocking : a method used to force the hardware (which being overclocked) to perform higher than the manufacturers' specification.

* PC : Personal Computer, a desktop form personal computer.

* OEM : Original Equipment Manufacturer, the original manufacturer of a component for a product, which may be resold by another company.

* Pure Power Power Supply Unit : a Power Supply Unit that has the exact wattage as mentioned on it's specification. Example: a power supply unit claims to have 550W of power, if its not a pure power ones, it would probably produce only 350W to 400W of power since the rest of the wattage was converted into heat. While, a pure power power supply unit will have the same exact amount of wattage which is 550W.

* CPU : Central Processing Unit, is the "big box" part of your PC, where all hardware (processor, RAM, VGA Card, etc are installed).

* Thermal Paste : a substance that similar like toothpaste used to transfer heat from your processor surface to your processor cooler.

* Airflow : the condition when a current of air is moving through.

* BIOS : Basic Input/Output System. A basic text based user interface to control and access your installed hardware.

* Clock Speed Frequency : the speed of your processor (in MHz) before it was multiplied by the processor's multiplier. Example: I have the Intel Pentium 4 2.4C HT. Its default core speed is 2.40GHz. This processor has 12 multipliers, so 2.40GHz divided by 12 is 200MHz. That 200MHz is the processor's clock speed frequency.

* Voltage : the amount of electricity given to specific part of hardware in order to make the mentioned hardware works.

* OS : Operating System. A GUI based system where you can use various programs and games, performs various tasks, transfers data, etc conveniently.

* GUI : Graphical User Interface. A method of interface that combines graphics and texts to help the users interact with the system/program.

* CMOS : Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor, is an integrated electronic circuit that controls all components of the motherboard.

That's the end of the processor overclocking guideline, hope it could be useful for you.

Recently I've been addicted to a new online First Person Shooter game called Point Blank. I'm addicted to the game because it reminds me of the glorious Counter Strike which I played when in junior high school. Today I'd like to give you a glimpse of the game. We all know that the Indonesian gamers community is getting bored with Counter Strike which is aged more than 10 years and long being a first person shooter game. Introduction

Usually in FPS online game there are two sides facing each other. In Point Blank, they are CT Force and Free Rebels.

CT Force

Due to more extensive conflict with the immigrants, the government established a special organization to confront the terrorists, there are 30 selected elite troops carrying out the mission.

The increasing number of terrorist organizations called Free Rebels has made the government sends out its best troops to join and changed its name to CT-Force (Counter Terrorist Force).

Those criminal actions are developed to a well-organized movement called Free Rebels. The goal is to dominate the entire drugs trade and weapons in all over the world and to create fear for the community.

The University of Indonesia has been developing a new information system called Hotspot UI. Hotspot UI is a wireless network system that allows users to connect to the internet 24/7 through a mobile computer such as laptop or PDA in all the University of Indonesia coverage areas without any charge. The main objective of this new service is to give facilitation for all members of the university to gain access to the university main network service and the University Integrated Network service (JUITA) whenever and wherever, instantly, easy, and simple.

Hotspot UI can be accessed from some areas around the campus in Depok. The hotspot UI coverage areas include the office of the University Head (7 spots), Faculty of Economy (10 spots), Faculty of Social and Political Science (5 spots), Economical Post-Graduate Program (3 spots), Faculty of Psychology (9 spots), Faculty of Computer Science (7 spots), Faculty of Law (5 spots), mosque (5 spots), Faculty of Social Health (7 spots), Faculty of Nursing (5 spots), Faculty of Math and Science (5 spots), Central Library (4 spots), and Faculty of Humanities (3 spots). The status of all coverage areas is active and usable.

Hotspot UI uses a Wi-Fi device to transmit and receive radio signal on frequency 2.4 Ghz and 5.4 Ghz. Hotspot UI enables data to be sent in high speeds ranging from 11 to 54 mb/s. This is known as broadband connection because a vast amount of data can be sent quickly. No wonder if most students use it to download their favorite movies, songs, and games instead of searching some information for their projects.

However, the security system of this hotspot UI is slightly weak since it is a brand new technology and needs to be more developed. It is possible for you to distract the wireless traffic internet connection by using your PDA in some certain radius of the area and infect some viruses to the whole computers. Timun Mas - A Folktale from Central Java

A long time ago, there was a farmer couple. They were living in a village near a forest. They lived happily, but their life would be much much hppier if they had any children. They hadn’t had any children yet for more than 20 years of their marriage. Every day they prayed to the God for a child.

One day a giant passed their home. He heard what they were praying. The giant then gave them a cucumber seed.

“Plant this modified-cucumber-seed, when it is ripe, eat the golden cucumber and do a “WooHoo” at full moon night. Then you’ll get a daughter,” said the giant.

“Thank you, Giant,” replied the couple.

“But in one condition, in her 17th birthday, you must give her to me,” said the Giant.

The couple wanted a child so much that they agreed without thinking first. The next day, the farmer couple planted the cucumber seed on their backyard. Each day they took care of the growing plant so carefully. A few months later, a golden cucumber grew from the plant. The cucumber was getting heavier and bigger each day. When it was ripe, they picked it. Cautiously they ate the cucumber and how surprised they were when they found it worked. The wife was pregnant. After nine months, she delivered a beautiful baby. They were so happy. They named the baby Timun Mas (Eng: Golden Cucumber).

Years were passing by and Timun Mas had grown into a beautiful girl. Her parents were very happy. But their happiness turned to fear when her 17th birthday came. The giant returned to ask for their promise. He was going to take Timun Mas away. The farmer tried to be calm.

“Just a moment, please. Timun Mas is playing. My wife will call her over,” he said.

Then the farmer came to his daughter.

“My child, as your father, I have done the most unforgivable mistake in the whole of my life by making an agreement with a giant,” he said. “I must give you to him when you are 17. Forgive me, my child.”

“It’s not all your fault, daddy. You don’t have to worry. I’ll be just fine.” Timun Mas calms her father.

So the father gave his lovely daughter to the giant. But before he gave her to the giant, the father asked the giant what he will do to Timun Mas.

“I will make her as my lunch!” said the giant.

“Why do you eat humans? There are lots of foods that you can eat instead of human. You can eat fruits or vegetables if you want,” said the father sadly.

“No, I will eat her. You have promised that you will give your child to me, haven’t you? It’s none of your business what I’m going to do to your child,” said the giant angrily.

The couple was very sad about her leaving. But they didn’t want the giant to eat Timun Mas. Then the father gave Timun Mas a little bag.

“Keep this with you. This will help you from the giant.”

Meanwhile, the giant had been waiting for too long. He became impatient. But finally, the couple gave Timun Mas to the giant.

On the way back home, the giant suddenly felt so compassion for the kindness and integrity showed by the farmer couple. He then disposed of his intention for eating Timun Mas and asked her to teach him how to eat fruits and vegetables. Then Timun Mas taught the giant how to eat fruits and vegetables.

“Before you can eat them, you have to plant them or find them in the forest. But be very careful, because not all fruits and vegetables are eatable.” said Timun Mas. “After you get them, you can directly eat them or you can have them cooked. If you want them cooked, you have to mix them with other food or spices. I have some spices if you want. I got it from my father right before you took me,” explained Timun Mas. “It’s called salt. You can get it from the sea water. It tastes salty. And this is shrimp pasta which can make your food yummier,” Timun Mas continued.

“OK, I get it, what else?” asked the giant.

“Come here, I’ll show you this highly seasoned and spiced vegetable, which is called chilly. What do you think?” said Timun Mas.

“Hmm…red color and it is quite long. I think I can find it in the forest,” the giant responded. “Hey Timun Mas, what else you have got in your little bag?” asked the giant.

“Only one more item, it is cucumber. You have already known it, haven’t you? Hey giant, why don’t we go to my house and cook some food for you to eat. My parents have lots of spices and food to be cooked,” said Timun Mas.

“That sounds a good idea. Let’s go! What are you waiting for?” The Giant replied excitedly.

The farmer couple was very surprised of what they saw because their lovely daughter was still alive. But, they were a little bit confused because Timun Mas came to the house with the giant.

“Timun Mas, we are so missing you! Thank God you are okay. But how come this giant…” the mother was puzzled.

“Relax mom, this giant has repented his sins and never eat human anymore. He wants to try to eat fruits and vegetables…and flesh form the livestock,” Timun Mas explained.

After tasting Timun Mas cook, the giant felt very pleased and decided to live with the family to help the father on the farm in order to get another delicious food cooked by Timun Mas. After coming back from the farm, Timun Mas always prepare the food for one more family member, the giant. From then on, Timun Mas and her family lived happily with the giant as their new family member.

Then the sun rose slowly from behind the mountain...

It was very beautiful...

The most beautiful sun we had ever seen...

It hailed us with its bright-orange color and rounded shape...

When the first time it came up, we felt a warm breeze pulled gently at our hair and everywhere there was the scent of fart...

I stopped breath and stared at my friend...

He then laughed out loud and ran away from me...

I could not put up with his behavior, so I ran after him and all of a sudden we fell down to a vale, the vale of darkness...

We almost went to meet our maker if there were no trees around us...

I didn’t know how, but we could get to the top again, sitting on a gigantic rock...

It was like standing on top of the world...

And then, we saw a flock of birds flying through us...

Their sounds were so melodious...

We almost over slept listening to their sound...

But unexpectedly, one of the birds dropped its droppings to my friend’s head...

He was very furious but could do nothing...

Pervaded in overtiredness and fatigue, we didn’t realize that the sun was gone...

According to the grapevine, the sun was above our head indicated that it was already afternoon...

So, we went down the mountain and back to our hotel happily...

M-Learning for Students - Is It Possible?

You might still remember of a TV commercial telling the story of a man going back home on foot because he missed his last bus. In the story, the man looks very calm and not too worries about the bus when he takes out his mobile phone, puts on the headset, plays some songs from the phone, and walks down the street whistling cheerfully. “I love missing the last bus home…,” he said.

Imagine when we have a different situation. A student suddenly, one day, is not able to attend classes for sick or other important reasons. Yet, he is not too restless about the lessons left behind. He just grasps his mobile phone, learning the left lessons through video streaming or video calling, downloading available learning applications in the form of java, flash, or 3GP application, and doing other teaching-learning process via his mobile phone. It probably gives a futuristic impression overmuch, but such things are possible to be done at present time since technologies are more advance currently. Mobile phones in this day and age are equipped with the capability to connect to the internet, to play and record audio, video, and picture or photo, and to run software applications such as Java, Symbian, Flash, and so forth. In addition, the development of 3G technology gives a faster data transfer with better quality and, of course, less expensive tariff. Thus, the above story is not just an overrated thought anymore considering all the advance technology that we have nowadays.

When the information and technology, internet in particular, rapidly developed, the educational sector starts to build up a new method of teaching-learning process on computer-based which later known as e-learning (electronic learning). With e-learning, a student can access materials or lessons from the internet, make a topic in a forum to be discussed together, or ask for tutor from people around the world. However, for most Indonesian people, internet is still considered as an article of luxury and not all people could gain access to it. Therefore, e-learning in Indonesia is somewhat difficult to be adopted and utilized.

It is a fact that the presence of mobile phone technology in society gives an opportunity to develop a new way of teaching-learning process considering the large number of students using mobile phone and the more sophisticated technology integrated in the mobile phone itself. A few years back, the utilization of mobile phone is still limited to be used for communication and entertainment. But now, many researchers are focused on developing the mobile phone as a tool of studying which is later known as m-learning. M-learning (mobile learning) offers many advantages for students. They can browse and pick one of the lessons they want to learn “anywhere and anytime,” and it is very cheap, even cheaper than the cost to go to school. Students should not be worried anymore about the mobile phone restrictiveness such as small screen, memory capacity, and input/output media because they can now be overcome with the advance technology we have nowadays.

Even though m-learning promises many advantages, it also has some shortcomings to be considered by the developers. Muh. Tamimuddin, a mobile application programmer and educational practitioner wrote in his blog that the variety of platforms applied in mobile phones requires the developers to develop one system which provides compatibility and interoperability. He also said that the developers must design and create school materials specifically for m-learning instead of derived from e-learning.

However, with all the advantages and weaknesses, the using of m-learning to help students in their studies will be inevitable in the next few years. They will be able to study anything, anywhere, and anytime using their mobile phone. No wonder if there will be a TV commercial telling a story of a student missing his class session and catch up his left lessons by making use of his mobile phone. Showing his big smile, he said: “I love missing my class session.”
