In a world dominated by male deejays...

If you ask the average EDM fan to name at least 10 female deejays on the spot, do you think they would be able to? What about if you ask the professionals in the EDM music industry?

The recent poll results from the SheFM Top 100 SheJays (Female Deejays) has got me thinking about reasons as to why female deejays are not as publicized as male deejays are. The poll itself reveals the names of 100 deejays out of which only two have performed at a highly publicized event, them being Claudia Cazacu and Sophie Sugar, both at ASOT 500 in Den Bosch. That is only 2 out of 40 acts, and if you were to include the entire sets of ASOT 500, that only accounts for 2.9% of the acts being performed by females.

Now I'm not picking on ASOT and its organizers, I'm just using it as one example that actually decided to include female deejays as I remember Armin saying in his previous episodes before Den Bosch that there is a lack of female deejay performers. Well, the poll here shows that the only lack female deejays have is the publicity many male ones receive.

This can mean one of two things, it's either that:

1) Female deejays are less talented than their male counterparts.

OR

2) Female deejays have low to no productions of their own, thus they lack the publicity, trust and support from the EDM music industry.

I don't know about you, but I refuse to believe that names like Juliet Star (who ranks on top of the polls this year and whom I on regular basis listen to her radio show), Lisa Lashes (who performed an awesome EOYC mix that aired on ah.fm) and of the many others in this poll and beyond are any less talented than any of their male counterparts in the world of disk-jockeying.

As listeners and fans of this music genre, I believe it is our responsibility to seek and support such talents in order to prove to the promoters that their talents are in demand. However I also believe that promoters and professionals in the industry have an equal responsibility to seek and support such talents so that they can subject it to us, the fans.

In the end, the more light is shed on this matter, the more attention it will get, and a special thanks should be dedicated to SheFM for promoting such talents.

Here's to hoping that 2012 will witness more of these names on grande acts.I know for one that the deejay holding the top position in this poll will be opening for Above & Beyond at Fluxx in San Diego on January 19 along side Zana, and with acts from Caliparis and Ammixxx.

EDM TOP 10 PICKS FOR 2011

2011 has been an incredible year for electronic music. Like them or not, producers such as Skrillex and David Guetta have helped bring electronic music into mainstream media, and it gives me the feeling that we will start seeing more of it in the coming years as the next generation of popular music. It gives me hope that artists such as Above and Beyond may see more recognition for their sounds because of this.

To be honest, while 2011 has been full of great news for EDM, it has also had a cloud of “doom of gloom” over the trance community. Mind you, I have only been listening to trance and have only been in this community for a little over two years, but compared to 2010, I’ve seen a lot more haters than lovers.

Well, I’m about to feed the haters. My top 10 EDM tracks of this year is not exclusive to trance music. As a note, people who know me also know that I tend to be honest with my opinions. I’m not going to look at a track with rose-colored glasses and support it when I think it’s generic. It’s why I was so happy that, despite lovingGareth Emery‘s stance on electronic music, that the track that he and Ben Gold did, Flash, got little to no attention in the ASOT tune of the year votes (generic sounds are generic, Gareth! More innovation, less of the same please!).

My top 10 is based very simple beliefs: can I recognize the track by listening to it? Do I know who made it? How many times have I listened to it this year? Do I still listen to it, and feel that it’s fresh? Those basic beliefs are the reason for my list. No, I have not heard everything. No, I do not recall everything that I’ve heard. There’s a lot of music out there. I’m sure that I have barely scratched the surface in what I’ve heard, as it’s next to impossible to hear all of it unless you eat, sleep, work, and breathe electronic music.

This is one man’s opinion, and it’s hard to rank a top 10 without feeling like you are snubbing something amazing from your list. If I show you a new track, sweet. If I have you look at an old track with new perspectives, all the sweeter.

With those notes, here is my pick for the top 10 EDM tracks of 2011.

10.Raise Your Weapon by Deadmau5

I can feel the hatred from some of you right now for putting this track on a top 10 list primarily dominated by trance music. At first, I hated myself a bit for this one too. After all, I loathe what dubstep is and has become. Limiters being used beyond safe levels for a speaker, all in the name to “melt some bro’s face off”. I mean, come on. Most of dubstep these days is noise.

And yet, for some reason, I return to this track by mainstream sensation Deadmau5 a lot. Why is that?

The word to describe Raise Your Weapon is ‘contrast’. Deadmau5′s old tracks embody that ever-present kick through the first half of Raise Your Weapon, which has a soothing progressive sound. That piano tune which remains present through the track is haunting, along with the voice of Greta Svabo Bech. That classic sound for the first half, which reminds me of many of Deadmau5′s Random Album Title tracks, is a great marriage from old to new. As he does his old sound, it eventually morphs into dubstep, nothing overly obnoxious mind you, and suddenly the vibe and lyrics of the song change drastically, while remaining the same.

The contrast, and the different feelings that come over me as I hear the two very distinct sides of this track, are the reason why I consider this one of the best of the year. From soothing to chilling, cool to hot. That transition from progressive to dub has made it impossible for me to forget this track.

Say what you will about Deadmau5. His production skills are top-notch, and what he pulls off in Raise Your Weapon should be a fine example of that.

9.Cape Town by Leon Boiler

In the name of sounds that break away from the norm, Leon Boiler is one of the producers that comes to mind as someone who does this in trance. Because man, this stuff’s hard. You’re not getting soft, uplifting, sappy trance with this guy. I also get a fair dose of it from local dj and friend Juliet Star, who loves the work that Leon Boiler does.

This track is a big room banger. It doesn’t encourage drifting off into innocent bliss. It’s not going to keep you still. It’s loud, in your face, hard. And awesome. It’s all sorts of awesome. Especially that fade from the kick into the synth, as the sounds begin to come back. It’s like Leon Boiler is slamming me in the face with his studio equipment. And I keep asking for more.

8.Kate by Arty

There’s been a lot of support for Arty’s big adventure into progressive house, with his track Around the World gaining the most popularity. It ended up ranking #21 for the A State of Trance 2011 Tune of the Year list (remember, ASOT is trance and progressive music). That said, while I always enjoy hearing Around the World at clubs and festivals, it is not my favorite work of his this year. Instead, I prefer his summer track Kate, named after his girlfriend.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for the romantic tracks, and that’s what Kate feels like. It feels like a combination of that progressive house sound that I’ve come to love this year from Arty, along with the good elements of cheese that I hear in some trance tracks. It’s sounds are complex, with Arty’s layering of sounds being one of the things I love about his productions. I’m always picking up on new sounds after the first listen. However, unlike Around the World, Kate creates a warming sensation when I hear it. Yes, it’s probably because it was inspired by Arty’s romantics in the title, but the change in pitches, that echoing “oooooooooh” in the background, all of it comes together to create a really positive vibe as it plays.

7.New Vibe by Jaytech

I got a chance to hear Jaytech for the first time at ASOT350 in Los Angeles, and it was there that I was introduced to his style. Since then, and moreso in the last few months, I’ve started to follow his podcasts and work a lot more. Naturally, when I heard New Vibe for the first time, I was looking on Youtube in an effort to loop that track over and over again.

It’s Jaytech’s sound, and while nothing feels truly new from it, it’s his mesh of sounds and instruments that I love and want to emphasize for people who have never heard his music before. For this reason, New Vibe stands out as one of my favorites of his, with the mesh of deep house sounds and groovy use of piano. Volume control is what sells me the most on New Vibe, which fades in and out for sounds, hard to soft with the piano, as sounds are brought out and brought back in again.

6.Electrified by Tate and Diamond featuring Nicolai (Mat Zo Electrified Dub Mix)

Yeesh. What a long title. Do not mistake this one for the Mat Zo remix of Tate and Diamond’s track. He did two, and the electrified dub is far superior. The vocal remix feels too similar in vibe to the original, whereas the Electrified Dub mix takes the electro vibe that comes after the music is pulled away in the original, and amplifies that vibe.

It combines house-style music with electro-infused beats, and evolves the original track (also good, by the way) into a new sensation. Mat’s modifications and adjustments move the style more to electro house, and holy hell is it amazing.

5.Zara by Arty

While I had become familiar with Arty’s sound thanks to his remixes (most notably, at the time, his remixes of Back 2 Earth from Cosmic Gate and She Gave Happiness by D-MAD), it was this track that had me following everything Arty was brewing in the studios. I still play this track in my car on an almost daily basis, and had it not been for a certain collaborative track between him and Mat Zo, it would be my favorite track of his this year.

Zara does a lot that I love, most notably its funky beat that leads into the synth, and as the drum kick is pulled back, that beautiful piano loop takes over. And it sets the mood for the entire track. It’s hard for me to imagine a trance track that has a part as uplifting as the synth and piano loop from this song. And that euphoric feeling that comes from the synth doesn’t go away, even as the funkier beat and drum kick are returned into Zara.

4.Memories by Michael Cassette

In a sea of familiar sounds, Michael Cassette stands out as a producer unlike the rest. Not only is his production name awesome, but he also create some amazing electronic music infused with what has now become his calling card: 80s electric. Memories, a track from earlier this year, embodies that sensation of 80s electric. It’s soothing, progressive house music, recognizable as something out of the decade of decadence and yet completely re-invented.

Memories combines elements of the Anjunadeep label with his iconic sound, as it comes out after the first 30 seconds of the original mix. From there on, it’s a groovy marriage of 80s and house music, as the track moves into more euphoric directions as the whistling gets introduced, and as it moves into hypnotizing voice that keeps saying “Do you remember?”. Well, it’s been nearly a year since the track came out, so it’s safe to say that I do indeed remember. And I still love this one.

3.Levels by Avicii

Avicii’s had a big year, as he has propelled himself into the realms of international superstar with some amazing tracks. Levels stands out the most in my mind as an active club mover, and is one of my favorite tracks of his. We’re talking about the original track, by the way. I have the very opposite opinion of Skrillex’s dubstep remix (egads, is it awful; the same damn track with wubba wubba womp as the mix).

Levels has its namesake in the track: different levels of energy, from the opening, to the loud in-your-face sounds that come from its memorable riffs, to the more quiet and soothing vocals, back to the riffs. It’s progressive house that has set the bar for what people expect to hear when they think of the genre. Love it or hate it (in my case, love it), Levels and Avicii’s production work has set the stage for what is big in progressive house, and it’s hard not to give credit where credit is due.

2.Sun and Moon, Thing Called Love, All of Above and Beyond’s Group Therapy Album

I can’t pick a track from Above and Beyond’s latest artist album that I can separate from the rest. Most will go with Sun and Moon, I personally prefer Thing Called Love’s club mix, my favorite track on the album is On My Way To Heaven…but then there’s other gems that are overshadowed from this album, such as Black Room Boy and Every Little Beat.

Group Therapy embodies everything that Above and Beyond represents as their style of music. It’s happy, euphoric trance as they do it best, with inventions and explorations into new sounds. And, like Above and Beyond’s standard fare, it contains some of the best lyrics I’ve heard in the trance genre. If you haven’t picked up this album, do so. It’s worth the money. Above and Beyond never ceases to amaze me with their productions.

1.Rebound by Arty and Mat Zo

As good as the Group Therapy album is, nothing in my mind is remotely close to topping the best track I heard this year: Rebound.

Arty and Mat Zo were two producers I started following a lot more closely going into the new year. Both were responsible for some great originals and some killer remixes, and when I saw these two names together for one track, I knew that I was in for a treat. And man, what a track it is. This is trance as it evolves. Heavy bass, killer beats, uplifting synth, and a drop that floors me to this day months after the track’s release.

I am shocked, utterly shocked, that this track was not the listener’s pick for tune of the year for A State of Trance. It takes what people love about trance, adds the Arty and Mat Zo touch to it, and reinvents what the genre is capable of. No track has come close to doing that for the trance genre this year. Not one. Rebound will hold a special place in my heart as not only the best track I have heard this year, but as one of the best tracks I’ve heard. Ever.

And there you have it! My pick for the top 10 tracks I’ve heard in electronic music this year. Given me preference for trance and progressive music, it shouldn’t be surprising that the list primarily consists of those two genres, but there are still a few curve-balls on there that I can appreciate (oh hi there Raise Your Weapon) as electronic music done well. It’s been a solid year of EDM, even as the culture has even more music to wade through than ever before, and it’s bound to pick up even more in 2012!

Born and raised in the Bronx, NY. Amor-E always enjoyed music. By the age of 7 he started to learn the guitar. As time went by, he learned to play more instruments (ie...Drums, Bass, Keyboard). Amor-E ventured through the different genres of rock thru out my High school years and early 20's.

Amor-E always sort of digged EDM (Electronic Dance Music) until about a little bit over a year ago when he became obsessed. Trance really blew him away, like nothing before. It made him feel like he has a soul again.

Now all Amor-E wants is to put in his 2 cents into this fantastic scene of music by composing himself and DJing Sets Live & pre-recorded.

Opinion piece on young producer's trance in 2011

It was the middle of the afternoon. Wanting to take my eyes off of what I was working on, I clicked over to Facebook and saw an update from Mat Zo's Facebook page. He mentioned a new track, Frequency Flyer. Interested, I popped up the Anjunabeats Youtube page and began listening. My ears were bombarded with a beautiful blend of sounds. A groovy intro, great synth, and some touches of disco/electro sounds made famous by Daft Punk led to what I thought a great track. It was a setup I was familiar with from Mat's previous tracks, a groovy bass-driven first half that leads into the trancey uplifting synth halfway in. I enjoyed it, and thought that many others would love it too.

Except, of course, for a lot of trance fans who filled the comments of that Youtube video with complaints about this “not being trance”.

“Not being trance” has not been an uncommon complain in the past, but it is has become something I've seen more this year in response to the latest sounds from younger producers. Let me give you a sample of these comments:

“This has nothing to do with trance its house”
“I just miss stuff from mat zo like the lost or aurus ,,, pisses me off that he's making cheap music right now”
“wtf is going on with anjuna? it's more housy, than trancy!"

There are a lot more. But the community certainly isn't exclusive to this thought. There are plenty of people in the other camp who also like this track. But it's something I've been noticing more and more of as the younger producers for trance music have begun to blend genres together in their latest tracks. Even Mat Zo and Arty's latest collaboration, which is still unnamed but has been dropped at a few shows in September, is getting similar critique.

My question to people who do not like these tracks, or care less about them simply because it is not the trance you are familiar with, is this. “Why do you care so much about the exact label?”

If a track is good, and it has elements you like, then why are you so willing to hate on an artist just because he is blending his or her sounds between genres? It's not like these complaints were nonexistent in the past, but they are becoming more and more commonplace in today's music scene, particularly from the trance community. And the most popular complaint is always, “This isn't trance”.

There are some basic rules that trance music typically follows, but if it still follows a few of these rules, or borrows elements from what typically defines trance music, then is it really “not trance”? For Mat Zo's Frequency Flyer, he is indeed following a familiar rules, from the time signature, to the drum kick fade away into synth, to the drop back into a drum kick beat. Compare it to his other, “trancier” tracks and you'll hear that the formula is still similar. The sounds, however, are what have changed, as he and many other artists seek to blend what sounds good out of the other genres as well.

Blending the genres of EDM is also one thing new Djs have been very proud of too. Gareth Emery, in his interview with the United States Trance Movement which you can find here, talks about this as a response to one of the questions in the interview. Here is his answer.

“I don’t really consider music so much in terms of genres, it’s all electronic music to me. And I think the more the barriers come down between the genres, the better that is. In my most recent US tour I’ve played trance, house, dubstep, techno, and the amazing thing is the crowds respond really well to this. I guess I am known as a bit of a maverick so I can get away with it, but it’s really encouraging and very positive for the scene.”

In recent months, producers such as Gareth Emery, Mat Zo, Arty, Avicii, and many others have been moving their music forward with this belief in mind. Just listen to their new stuff and it becomes really clear. And the result is fresh, original sounds that do not follow and specific genre, and are not interchangeable with other tracks of the same genre. They are unique, playing off of sounds that these producers have become famous for while breaking into new territory in an effort to unite lovers for electronic music, and not just trance or house or dubstep.

The electronic music scene is moving forward as a whole. The blending between house and trance have been some of the biggest changes in EDM this year, something more frequently heard on the big trance radio shows such as A State of Trance. I'd like to ask you that, before you label something as “not trance”, consider that being “not trance” can be a good thing. It can lead to the evolution of the music that we love. The music that has brought so many friends from afar together, and has ignited so much love in this community.

Don't place so much emphasis on these labels. Emphasize instead what good comes from the evolution of electronic music as a whole.

Review| Johnny Zana – 110 Degrees in San Diego

Johnny Antezana moved to San Diego from Arizona earlier this year, and has quickly become a fixture in the San Diego music scene. He has been a photographer for Eventvibe, he’s opened as a DJ for big names such as Victor Dinaire and Aly and Fila, and now he’s moved into the world of music production. His first track, 110 Degrees in San Diego, shows promise of what’s to come.

110 Degrees in San Diego is a groovy trance track that combines deep sounds and echoes with sharp notes. The combination is an edgy but calm sound. It’s stimulating while relaxing, a good representation of San Diego in the summer. As the track progresses, things get louder, more sounds get added, and it eventually reaches a drop after a long build-up that will have your body moving to the beat. The drop from the soothing build-up to the louder sounds parallels nicely to the title: things in San Diego are are calming, but as it gets hotter during the summer, life can get a lot more fun.

An electro remix is due out soon for 110 Degrees in San Diego, compliments of Slynkee, and it takes things to another level of groovy. After hearing it this past week at the Onyx Room in San Diego. I’m looking forward to its official release. The crowd response at the club was loud, and it has a unique sound from the original that makes it stand out.

Johnny’s been working hard on his music production, and his first track demonstrates his talent and experience in the trance and progressive scene. We’ll see what the future holds for him, and what kinds of sounds his future releases will have.

Being an avid Trance lover since 1999, I'm always searching for amazing new sounds. One of my goals in life is to see all the great DJs/Producers perform that I really enjoy. There is so much amazing talent in this world and I will always be searching for someone new and unique.

My goal with my new radio show and podcast is to search for newer and less known Trance & Progressive artists. I have had the pleasure of seeing and hearing most of the Big Named Artists over the years and now it's time to move onto the new talented artists of the future.

So for my first episode I wanted to have on one of my favorite Trance DJs/Producers, Danny Chen.

I met Danny Chen around January 2010 in the #trancefamily irc chat room. This is also how I met the #trancefamily. I was bored one evening and searching through the various chat rooms on the mixxnet irc server. I stumbled across one called #trancefamily. It sounded like there might be some nice trance lovers in this chat room, so I joined.

Danny Chen was the moderator of the #trancefamily irc chat room and he also ran trancefamily.net at the time. He was very popular with all of the #trancefamily spinning for hours upon hours with his legendary Zombie Sessions. Danny had also made many mashups, some spectacular year mixes and a few remixes.

Last year around the time of ASOT450, Danny Chen produced his first Original Track, 'Oceanside' using Ableton Live. Being a new artist, it is very difficult to get your first track signed. I saw such great potential in Danny, he was only 21 years old at the time and an amazing DJ and a fabulous new producer.I told Danny, let me help you, you are so amazing and I see a great future in you. So I began sending out some of Danny's mashups to some big DJs for him. Tydi played his Good Dream Right back mashup on his show twice. I also secured Danny a couple radio shows on 1mix.co.uk and ETN.fm.

In the music industry, it's one of those things, where you have to be in the right place at the right time. A few productions later, my friend Cristina was over at my house spinning on my livestream channel for some of the #trancefamily. Joanna invited Ruben de Ronde to tune in and Cristina played Ruben some of Danny's tracks. The next thing you know, Danny Chen was signed to his first label, Statement!, doing a fabulous remix of 'Ruden de Ronde - Forever In Our Hearts'.

Since then Danny Chen has produced several amazing tunes for Statement!, Armada, Black Hole Recordings, LW Recordings and We Stand Alone. His tracks have also been featured on a couple compiliations of Big Trance Artists including 'ATB – The DJ™6 - In The Mix Vol.1' and 'Andy Moor - Breaking The Silence Volume 2'.

Needless to say I am so happy I met such an amazing person as Danny Chen and I am so proud of his success so far. He is definitely one artist I will always believe in and continue to support through his musical journey.

Tiësto announces today that he’s planning to close out his much anticipated “Club Life College Invasion Tour” with a massive show at Los Angeles’ Home Depot Stadium on Saturday, October 8. Home of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA, Home Depot Stadium has a capacity of 26,000; making Tiësto’s performance the largest single headline DJ show in US history.

“Tiësto’s Club Life College Invasion Tour” is the largest dance music tour to ever hit the American college market. Tiësto will headline the three-week tour this fall with stops at campuses across the United States. College markets include Madison, Wisconsin; Ypislanti, Michigan; Syracuse, New York; Amherst, Massachusetts; Kingston, Rhode Island; Norfolk, Virginia; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; Tallahassee, Florida; Athens, Georgia; Gainesville, Florida; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Austin, Texas; San Diego, California; Fresno, California; Avila Beach, California and Los Angeles, California.

In conjunction with the college tour, Tiësto is launching two unparalleled contests for his fans. The first is a remix contest offering fans the chance to remix Tiësto’s brand new track “Work Hard, Play Hard.” The winning remix will be released on Tiësto’s own Musical Freedom label and the winner will have a chance to open for Tiësto during the College Invasion Tour. To celebrate turning an amazing 8 years old, Crystal Clouds will be taking over the airwaves at ETN.FM once more in August for a massive 120 hour celebration of trance & progressive music.

Featuring loads of fantastic DJs the event is set to start at 10:00 (GMT) on the 26th of August and continue until the 31st of August 2011.

The anniversary event has grown year on year and this time around will be no different.

A huge variety of resident and guest DJs will be producing some great mixes and in typical Crystal Clouds fashion some of the DJs will also be putting on the type of XXL sets that everybody enjoys and remember for years to come.

The 2011 headline mix comes from Ferry Tayle, who last year compiled an amazing 10 hour mix for Crystal Clouds. This year Ferry has decided to one-up himself by going for a staggering 12 hour mix. Although it is difficult to verify it, this could be the longest trance based DJ set ever to have been broadcast over the airwaves. It will be a mix that should not be missed and one that is sure to remain in your collection for years to come.

Other XXL sets come from the likes of Rob Evans who will be performing a massive 5 hour set, new resident Lazarus who will be doing one of his legendary 4 hour sets and DJ Jerom who will be creating a 4 hour mix of his unique take on trance.

And as if this wasn't enough XXL carnage - residents Manuel Le Saux, BlueHawk, Angel Ace and Acues will be doing 3 hour mixes each too.

Other than these XXL sets, Crystal Clouds has also picked the finest trance talent to create a variety of 1 hour and 2 hour mixes. These include the likes of Aly & Fila, Jorn van Deynhoven, Nitrous Oxide, Activa, Akira Kayosa, Jon O'Bir, Ronny K, Arnej, Coll & Tolland, Fast Distance, Andrew Bennett, Sied van Riel, Sebastian Brandt, Paul Miller, Sequentia and many many more!

Quite simply - the quality of the DJs performing for the Crystal Clouds 8th Birthday is overwhelming.
