Ten (1991) - Pearl Jam

One of the odd things about grunge is that it probably didn't really exist; case in point, Pearl Jam, who were one of the Big Four Seattle grunge bands (Nirvana, Soundgarden, PJ, Alice in Chains), and yet "Alive" unashamedly has a massive hair metal guitar solo, and when you consider that grunge's place in canonical musical history is supposed to be that it killed off hair metal, the fact that ver Jam are standing there filling their hypothetical stadium by pretending to be Guns 'n' Roses, well, it just seems a bit off, doesn't it? But then again remember that (What's the Story) Morning Glory? is closer to Nevermind then it is to anything Britpop and realise that genre in the 1990s was pretty much a crapshoot.

As the FAQ mentions, "if you look at the list of albums I've revoo'd so far you'd be forgiven for thinking music was invented in 1977". At present, for instance, the years 1977, 1978 and 1979 account for 15 albums between them, and all the rest of the 1970s account for, er, 8. And the sole representative of this year, 1976, is Time's Up by Buzzcocks which doesn't really count now does it?

But then what could it be replaced with? The problem is - as those of you who have been watching BBC Four's Top of the Pops repeats will perhaps be aware - 1976 was not one of music's best. But no year is wholly dismal, so here is the first of three views of 1976.
