Several studies have proven that all-Christmas radio can be an effective subliminal way to tell people "Get Your Christmas Shopping Done!" (this is also the reason many stores' "Muzak"-type systems go all-Christmas for about a month prior to and including December 24th).

This year, however, the ecomony is wobbly. Some are predicting that Christmas-season (day after Thanksgiving through December 24th) retail sales will actually decline this year compared to last (even before inflation), due more to the weak ecomony than the fact that thanks to the calendar, there are five fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year than last. (An article quoting a couple of experts predicting a decline in year-to-year Holiday sales can be found at http://money.cnn.com/2008/10/03/news/economy/creditsqueeze_r etail/index.htm?postversion=2008100312)

What does this have to do with radio??

Plenty.

Given that most music-formatted stations get most of their revenue from retail advertisers, I forsee pressure from retail advertisers and their agencies for those stations going all-Christmas to do so earlier this year, and even for those stations that don't go all-Christmas to play more Christmas music this year.

While I don't forsee the number of all-Christmas stations actually going up, what I do think will happen is that many stations that do go all-Christmas will start substantially earlier this year to please what for many of them is their dominant advertising category.

One reason: A terrible Christmas season may lead to a wrenching shakeout in retailing, with the end result being that there will fewer retail chains this time next year, which could mean far fewer ad dollars from retailers going to radio. And with radio so dependent on retail advertisers, it could mean big problems for radio.

Last year, only a handful of stations (including two in Salt Lake City) went all-Christmas as early as November 1st. This year, I wouldn't be surprised if over a hundred do it that day.

That's why I loved Sunny so much; it featured AC back when AC music was good. AC stations today are doing what they can with the product available to them, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

Guess Mr. Lee is afraid 97.5 might take a few points from his empire. Signal wise B has the clear advantage but I dont know going Northeast, where CBS-FM startes to give them some problems, that area is far enough from the actual rating metro, it might not mean anything. Does anyone here know if 97.5 gets out further Northeast than the B.....With this event happening what if someone went after OGL, would CBS get nuts like Jerry, I was always told in radio competiion is the best for the listener....the B and OGL have had it too good for so long with no actual direct competition. Would BEN go Classic Gold if they have a few bad books...GM would be the clear fly in the ointment for the established powerhouses...
