Every so often I use the Wayback Machine to dig up my old website www.heavyusker.com from the days before it was taken over by some random Japanese people (fair dos: I stopped paying for the hosting) and I trawl through the old track listings. I thought I would just post them here for convenience and general curiosity of anyone passing through. I used to upload these sessions to live365, one of the first "internet radios" - they were also syndicated by a guy in China of all places - and then in 2003 and 2004 they were live on Radio Círculo 100.4 FM (Madrid).

And so Luca was born.....to the sound of John Coltrane's "My Favourite Things". "My Favourite Things" is one of the most favoured examples of modal jazz, loosely defined as jazz of a certain 'attitude' (and originally derived from a book on music technique). Coltrane still reigns as one of music's heavyweights, a musician who could breathe life into the tried and tested and who touched many by his emotional playing. The much covered "My Favourite Things" highlights the man at his best, the track can be found on deleted vinyl and on re-issued CD, both on Atlantic.

Modal jazz found much favour in Europe and it's danceable style was popular with hip London youth in the late Eighties/early Nineties. In the late Sixties and early Seventies hip European cats danced to tunes on the highly vaunted German MPS album. "Carmell's Black Forest Waltz" by American trumpeter Carmell Jones (and featuring drummer Kenny Clarke) and recorded in Germany's Black Forest region, offers rich, autumnal Bavarian tones to a subtle rousing melody. "Carmell's Black Forest Waltz" is featured on "The Hip Walk" album think second mortgage or alternatively find it on its second home, Gilles Peterson's excellent compilation of rare MPS records "Talkin' Jazz". Two highly sought after UK jazz gems (worth much money on original vinyl) can also be found on Peterson compilations, "Blue Mosque" on the "Worldwide" album (Talkin' Loud), and "Ursula" on the forthcoming "Impressed" , a highly anticipated album of much sought after rare UK jazz. Both tracks are fine examples of vintage, 'quiet hours' jazz and have been adored by London cogensceti for years.

Yuseef Lateef's "Brother John" further echoes the definition of modal jazz as "music with attitude". This moving, spritual piece was recorded as a tribute to John Coltrane and works easily as well on the dancefloor as on the mind. The original album "Club Date" is quite hard to get, but is preferable to the re-issued CD version which offers different tracks to the original issue. CD buyers should check the "Modality" compilation on Impulse instead, which offers a wealth of modal classics. Yuseef Lateef (born William Evans), a learned, religious man who like many Black American musicians converted to Islam in the Sixties, holds particular affection in the jazz world, as does the Impulse label. The track resonates with a spiritual, ethereal feel and leaves a 'warm' glow in the stomach. "Love Theme from Spartacus" evokes a similar mood, and saw Yuseef conjure up the mystery of India through an array of Asian instruments. The track is taken from the album "Eastern Sounds" which features a suitably, moody black and white cover of Yuseef.

Saxophonist Sahib Shihab emigrated from post war America to Europe in 1959, again after converting to Islam. His album "Companionship" is the stuff of legends (even bootleg copies were rare and expensive and a few London record shops were 'raided' by the police in 1995 for stocking them!) and is an extremely sought after and highly priced album. Gaining huge credence with jazz dance DJs in the Eighties, the album is a kinetic mix of loose cannon dancefloor rythms, moving jazz and irresistible grooves. Thankfully Italian label Schema have made the title track available to all on their Sahib Shihab compilation.

At the beginning of November this year in downtown New York, Alice Coltrane (John Coltrane's widow) and her son Ravi took to the stage in the tiny confines of Joe's Public Theatre for a performance of "A Love Supreme". An optimistic crowd stood outside the tiny club, hoping for a ticket or chance to see the legend. They were met with a firm rebuttal by the door staff. A driver in a stationary car pressed play on his CD player and the joyous tones of "My Favourite Things" were heard. All around raised a smile, and for a few minutes the mood was lifted, and life's stresses were forgotten. By coincidence Radio Madrid's Rob Smith became a Dad at roughly the same time. His son Luca was born to the sound of "My Favourite Things".........from New York to Madrid the magic of modality continues.

A long time ago when jazz wasn’t “nice” but dangerous British musicians were putting out cutting edge records; not necessarily to great acclaim but working dancefloors into a frenzy and stretching the genre of jazz a little further. At the time their American counterparts received most of the glory, but with time an appreciation of British jazz grew. The records ‘matured’ the deep basslines resonated a little harder, the drums thundered with a funkier edge and something like pianists Michael Garrick Trio’s “First Born” just sounded sweeter to the taste. Gilles Peterson recently put together a compilation called "Impressed" which highlights this musical period, two tracks from that album "First Born" and "Jaipor" are featured here.

Michael Garrick is one of the finest pianists to emerge from Britain.His records are relevant today as they were thirty odd years ago and are highly in demand (and commanding huge prices to match). The formation of a credible British jazz force in the Sixties (though not recognised by the critics or public then) was largely due to him. When Ronnie Scotts was newly opened he was given an ‘artistic key’ to play whatever he wanted. Thus started a residency of many, many weeks at the world famous club.

Garrick was friendly with Jamaican emigree Joe Harriott, who was an early pioneer of Indo-jazz fusions, a good few years ahead of his musical contemporaries. Harriot took a more laidback, and ‘relaxed’ approach to the coupling of India and jazz than some of the more frenetic fusions from across the Atlantic. “Jaipor” is the sweet smell of incense on a crisp, morning in the beauty of an Indian town or village, and adds to the large influential work Harriot did in bringing the two types of music together. When in the early Nineties Talvin Singh and his tablatronics (tablas fed through a mic) rocked clubland those in the known acknowledged that Harriot had moved similar waters decades earlier.

Strata East was a label started in the early Seventies in America by muscians for musicians. Its goal was to spread spiritual, uplifting music without any commercial pressures. The label has become highly collectable over the years, with it’s slightly out there, celestial grooves finding favour with modern club afficiandos. Brother Ah recorded for the legendary label as well as being a member of Sun Ra’s highly influential Arkestra. “Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child” was originally privately released on his own Divine Recs. A sparse, emotitive piece, which still holds the grip of the listener several minutes after listening.

Dee Dee Bridgewater’s version of the classic Stylistics tune“People Make The World Go Round” is one of many, many versions of the song covered by artists as diverse as Milt Jackson and the Innerzone Orchestra. Dee Dee has been recording for many years, and after a period of absence in the Eighties and relocation to Paris, is still vowing international audiences. The track is taken from the much sought after “Afro Blue” album which includes her husband Cecil on trumpet. The track spells “power jazz”, a dulcet warm , deep bassline allows Dee Dee’s magical vocals to sit nicely on top, earmarked by an engaging turn on piano.

Seventy five years old, six foot seven and a leading authority on Afro-centric learning Brooklyn born Randy Weston has been recording for many years releasing over forty albums. Held in particalular esteem by young jazz kids, Weston’s slow, ‘marching’ piano, and sombre horns echo humid, sweat soaked evenings in balmy New Orleans underneath the welcome shade of immense Afro-American history. "in Memory Of" is taken from the 1973 album “Tanjah” which features a host of luminaries including bassist extraordinaire Ron Carter.

Mal Waldron’s “Portrait of a Young Mother” is from the 1958 album “Sounds” and resonates with a dark, ethereal emotion and haunting piano.

Dan Sicilian covers Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” with some tasty jazz samples and slightly off key vocals. The song has been popular with jazz heads for a while, there is a very soulful live version on Nirvana's “MTV Unplugged” and a swinging jazz version by guitarist Charlie Hunter on his debut Blue Note CD “Bing, Bing, Bing.”

N'awlins: Sho' nuff

Let's dip for an hour into the distinctive sound of New Orleans rhythm and blues, from its origins in traditional mardi gras jazz and its evolution into the 60s funk sound of Allen Toussaint and the Meters. The city that invented jazz at the turn of the 20th century has a good claim to have invented funk and rock and roll as well. And then there's the infectious sound of mardi gras carnival parades.

Despite being at the heart of the Deep South, New Orleans managed to maintain a remarkable level of racial integration - at least in music. The melding of Cajun, Creole, African, Caribbean and European traditions in a city that loves to party has produced a line of legendary performers to rival any other city in the United States. Buddy Bolden, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew, Little Richard, the Neville Brothers, Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, Lee Dorsey, Eddie Bo, Dr John and Wynton Marsalis are just a start.

Mardi Gras Mambo was recorded in 1954 by the Hawkettes, a high school band led by Art Neville who would go on to form the Meters, the rhythm combo that was as central to the Allen Toussaint's New Orleans sound as Booker T and the MGs were for the Memphis sound of the Stax label. Next up are two versions of the carnival parade anthem Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The first is by piano legend Professor Longhair and the second by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

The Wild Magnolias were the first New Orleans Indian band to cut records. Their number tells of how mardi gras big chiefs would make an elaborately crafted and colourful new suit for carnival. Another marching band, the Rebirth Brass Band team up with former James Brown sideman Maceo Parker to give a mardi gras make-over to Joe Zawinul's Grammy-winning soul-jazz standard Mercy, Mercy Mercy. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band return to the party with the title track of their album Voodoo.

Get Out Of My Life Woman was first recorded by Lee Dorsey and contains one of the most widely sampled drum breaks of all time. In a turntable sequence from the Soulful Fruit LP, Rob Swift of the X-Men hip hop collective cuts up several different versions of the track.

German-based brass band the Mardi Gras BB cut up samples from New York's World Famous Supreme Team (as featured in Malcom McClaren's Duck Rock LP) into their down and dirty jam Psychoflute. Gentelmen June Gardner, one of the pillars of New Orleans drumming, shows of his skills in an ode to the soul food side-dish Mustard Greens. Jocomo is the original 1954 version of the mardi gras standard Iko Iko, which would be a 1960s hit for New Orleans teen harmony trio the Dixie Cups and in the 1980s for the UK's Belle Stars.

Hey Pocky A-Way is one of the Meter's top dancefloor movers, from the Rejuvenation album. The next few of tracks are a selection of the huge number of outstanding funk tracks to come out of the Crescent City. Cosimo Matassa's owned the only recording studio at the height of the New Orleans soul era and this brought about a remarkable level of quality output. Some of these tracks are featured here and a whole lot of others have been dug out of the vaults and reissued by London's Soul Jazz record label on their two-volume New Orleans Funk compilations. For a year or so lucky Londoners were able to dance all night to these three-minute masterpieces at the now defunct and sorely-missed Saturday Night Fish Fry monthlies at The Fringe club in Vauxhall.

Reuben Bell's ultra-rare 7" Super Jock - an ode to a kick-ass DJ - was made famous by its inclusion in DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist's cult Brainfreeze live shows. Barefootin' by Robert Parker was a New Orleans million-seller, and two tracks by Betty Harris showcase the huge talents of a massively underrated diva equally at home with a soulful ballad as a up-tempo groover like Mean Man. The complete Betty Harris recordings 1963-69 were reissued in 1998 by the UK's Westside label as Soul Perfection Plus.

its been three years since i did a new podcast... and took something tragic to get me back to my music - the passing away of a friend of mine, neil suddes, at the age of just 41. neil was a huge influence on me musically, if not in many other ways. there is nothing i can do to bring him back - its still hard to believe - but i can at least honour his memory. this podcast is dedicated to him but it sounds more like a celebration of his life.

where the hell have i been all this time...?

i've hardly been down to the basement for months now. there are two reasons for this... ironically enough, the first is that i thought after having done a podcast for over two years i should at least own an ipod, so i bought myself an ipod touch. and, guess what, i've discovered that it is great being able to listen to music everywhere: in the car, in the gym, even in the swimming pool! i've actually started to buy digital music instead of vinyl... is this the end of an era?

more significantly, i've taken up running. i've even got my playlists organized to be at exactly the right tempo for my steps... i recently ran in the madrid half marathon and managed to raise some money for voces: you can see for yourself here. of course all this training takes away time when i could be doing podcasts.

keep bugging me and i will get on to do another podcast real soon now, i promise!

i was lucky enough to go to a very exciting event last night, the first concert organised by "voces", a new NGO based in spain, whose aims are to raise awareness (and money) for worthy causes (check http://www.voces.org.es/). they've managed to get support from the most famous and most promising musicians and actors that spain has to offer so its no surprise that the concert was completely sold out (12,000 people!). the musicians seemed to be enjoying it as much as the audience. drop me an email if you are interested in more details.

so montenegro was great! in no small part this was due to a musical oasis in the old part of budva, called casper (where i was deejaying, of course!) but what really made it was our fantastic host and owner of casper, marko. he made me feel like i was the only one deejaying there out of the 10 or so deejays on the lineup, such was his attention to every detail. i'd also like to give a big thanks to nebojsa (who organised the whole thing) and his lovely wife jelena. i was also lucky enough to meet up with another good serbian friend, zjelko (from cosmic sounds) who was in belgrade when we were there. the only disappointing aspect was that quantic cancelled at the last minute (and i had the honour of filling in for him, as you can see it was sweaty work!). the three sessions i did have all been recorded - i will send a copy to the first ten people to email me asking for one!

i would love to hear from anyone who came along to world peace soul jazz all those years ago in oxford... it was started by a couple of friends of mine - john cusins and chris swales - then i got involved... those were the days - popping down to london to jam records in the trocadero (RIP) and getting vip treatment from ollie... and being able to play anything as long as it was good... giving away free food so we could dodge the esoteric uk licensing laws and keep going until midnight(!) on a sunday. we even had tom from groove armada as a guest dj (in 1992!).

i've been waiting for this moment for over 6 years... and it has always eluded me. to be able to watch the bbc in spain the size of the satelite dish needed has always just been out of reach - just as i was getting used to the cost (and the size) the signal would move to another satelite and the dish would have to be even bigger and uglier (latest was 2 metres diameter!). so i'd pretty much given up hope.

now this is not an advertisment, just that i am very grateful to the person who put me on to this gadget (and to my brother who has it in his house, sapping his internet upload bandwidth) and i think it might be of interest to some of you international peeps! its called a slingbox and the idea is that you leave it connected to a tv aerial and the internet in your country of choice. then you can log on to it via the internet from anywhere in the world and watch your beloved home tv. although after so many years i'm beginning to realise how crap a lot of it is... i still miss it though!!

(disclaimer: i'm talking about differences between men and women ON AVERAGE, not about all men and women)

lately, i've noticed more and more girls who are passionately into their music. and i have my theory that the internet, itunes and online social networks like myspace have gone some way to level the playing field.

what do i mean? i think that men tend to collect music more than women but are not necessarily more or less passionate about listening to it. and faced with a collector with an encyclopaedic knowledge of records it can be a bit intimidating...

for example, in my experience of deejaying (and of course this may be conditioned on how good or bad looking i am), all the requests i have had from guys have been of the type "have you got such and such track by such and such" and from girls more like "can you play something that we all know"? i think that it is easier (in general) for a guy to go up to a deejay and ask for a request... the girls that come up tend to be more drunk by the time they start asking. the same thing goes for specialist record shops (just make a count of how many guys to girls there are on average) which has a more far reaching effect...

so, my point is that, behind the anonymity of your computer screen and with the ease of finding and downloading related music that you like on the internet, i wonder whether this has balanced out this social bias and left us just with those who are passionate about music and those who are not so passionate (be they men or women).

as you can see, the word is spreading - slowly, but surely... its great to think that about the 130 people a day who currently listen to these shows, people from all over the world. people jogging in central park, librarians tuning in while they are busy cataloging, etc. people from every conceivable country (in the last hour i have hits from the US, from japan, from the dominican republic, from france, italy, the netherlands, the UK, germany and, of course, spain). i know it sounds corny, but all i really care about is getting this music HEARD. if i have an ulterior motive, it is just to make sure that more music like this is MADE. so, if you like these shows, please spread the word... its not to everybody's taste but i KNOW there are more of you out there...

watch (at least) the first two minutes of this... it's spot on. what i find amazing is that deejaying with jazz records is so "mainstream" in the uk that it's made its way into a tv comedy...

i was chuffed just now to see that the 12" i did on hitop records with the remix of cesar mariano's "futebol de bar" was just sold from japan to hong kong on ebay for $20! i told hitop we should have pressed some more of them... :-)
