1:30AM. - Neon blue lights on a rooftop bar where I find myself nursing a whiskey and coke.
It's the kind of cramped space where you introduce yourself by asking
"do people actually dance here, or do we just stand around?"
They're medical interns, she with the short hair, petite build and tiny black dress,
he with his blazer, jeans, and chuck taylors.
Two celebrities join the party, and some in the crowd are starstruck.
The interns are not impressed.
They see celebrities all the time, they say.
In the emergency rooms, but that they're not allowed to talk about that.
This is their last week in town, before heading home.
Here, they're interns.
At home, they'll be the closest thing their town would have to real doctors,
and they dread the responsibility.
Silently, we agree to stand around together
in a place where standing around together is all you can really do.
They'll see the celebrities again, maybe in an emergency room.
But they're not allowed to talk about that.
Those are my neighbor's dogs in the background

7:30 AM. - “Stuck in traffic” has become my unofficial life mantra.
Thoughts being hastily written onto my mobile phone.
Typographical errors abound.
Luckily, they don’t matter as much in an internal monologue.
There’s 18% power left, and my charging cable is missing.
Still, I write.
I guess you could say I’m a risk-taker.
A few days ago, I found myself hiking up a mountain.
Great feats of achievement for a man who
Has known nothing else of the local landscape aside from shopping malls and secret cafes.
9 peaks, 38 thousand steps, 9 miles, and 3800 calories are not enough
To convey the exhilaration, fear, and trust that forms between ill-prepared men
Who are doing their best not to slip and fall off the side of a mountain.
Spending 8 to 12 hours a day sitting on a desk at work has prepared us for this adventure,
in the same way that evolution has prepared the manatee for survival in the African Savannah.
Still, I survived a mountain.
Perhaps the manatee might survive the Savannah.

3:33AM. - A police barricade in the middle of the road
Is keeping me from getting home for an hour of sleep,
Before a shower and work again tomorrow.
A dead body in a car, feet dangling out the open door.
The blood is still dripping from one of the legs.
The police let me through eventually.
A piece of paper on the ground calls to my attention, a weird kind of poetry.
You meet the right woman and suddenly you can't eat
Can't sleep - you're losing weight and have no energy
The doctors tell you it's the insomnia, malnutrition and diabetes,
But you tell them it's true love

It's after midnight, and I find myself Awake.
The night is silent, save for the low rumble of the fan next to me, and the occasional airplane flying overhead.
Tomorrow is a few hours away. Tomorrow is a coffee shop on a side-street, where early in the morning you'll see ad agency women with big backpacks and 6-inch heels on the way to work.
But right now, I have to contend with my own listlessness, and how it feels.
It's annoying. A ball of frustration bordering on fury.
That I am no longer me, that somehow the me that was fine and well is somewhere else, at another's beck and call.
And I hate that. I built me. Nothing and nobody else should get to take it away, play with it, and return it how they will.
I am mine, and every day I will fight for me until it's true again.

4:30 p.m. - At a cemetery looking up at the sky.
A talk with a friend that's both real and imagined.
We are taking turns taking photos of the sky.
Communication is complex. Complicated.
Even if the message is simple it is easily misunderstood
when you have to read between the in betweens of lines.
We try to figure out what shapes of the clouds look like.
Surprisingly no jokes about the zombies despite our location.
I'm trying to fill a void in me that has started sapping me of joy. Of purpose.
Trying to find something to bring me back to life.
Fitting location I suppose.
We are sitting on the grass.
We're not supposed to but by the time they find out it's time to leave anyway.

The urge to write grips me.
She likes the funny ones. The ones who make her laugh and feel alive and forget about tomorrow.
He's in love with lost causes and the tragic beauty of things that cannot be.
This story practically writes itself.
A movie cliche written down letter for letter.
Somehow they meet.
She's different.
He's different.
They meet again.
And again.
She just came from a bad breakup.
So did he.
They'll be friends until they're no longer friends.
Awkward kissing leads to an awkward relationship.
Eventually it all falls apart.
Her life takes her somewhere else.
He couldn't keep it together.
And then aliens invade and everybody dies.
The end.
Romantic wasn't it?

1:05 p.m. - Waiting on a meeting right after lunch.
I like to make up stories about the people around me.
He wears skinny jeans, red crocodile skin boots, zip up.
He's a writer, or he thinks he is.
Last thing he published was a poem about the tragedy of the indigenous
and the encroaching doom of globalized culture.
Every few months he tries to grow a beard only to realize that he can’t.
Rinse. Repeat.
She has black hair with green highlights that are in tone with her pink skirt.
Glasses and tattoos on her fingers that spell out “get back”.
Her story is that she has a perfectly normal family that she tells no one about.
She tells people they live in another country.
She doesn't need this job.
She's doing it so she doesn't get bored.
That part is true.
The one in the corner is laughing a little too loudly.
Louder than the others.
When he talks he makes sure to establish eye contact with everyone at the table, a second too long.
Perhaps its forced.
Inside he's an introvert putting on the airs of an extrovert.
Later he'll be tired.
Later he'll find a safe place and rest.

5:43 AM - To call this a road would be a gross exaggeration.
A flattened dirt path just wide enough for vehicles to pass.
A tour van heading out of town with people
who are little more than extended acquaintances from work.
A karaoke machine serves as an ice breaker as we pass around songbooks.
Echo set to max.
We used to be stuck in the same room together.
Now we’re stuck in the same van.
A vacation with strangers.
Together, we are alone and vice versa.
Suffering an itinerary packed with so much value,
there’s little more to do than get out, take a photo, and get back in.
Next, photos with sand dunes.
I remember the van more than the destination.
That’s what I paid for.
Memories of a van and photos for Facebook.
I was here. Look, I’m smiling.
3 days of small talk and a thousand selfies.
The hotel does not have a photo.
It's dark, dank, and haunted.
Ignore the growing stains in the ceiling.
The random scratches at night.
The blood in the cabinet.
I’d prefer the safety of the van.
The van is home.
The van is life.

The number of vacant seats measured by the space between our knees.
Passengers sitting back to back on what is effectively a newspaper on the floor.
Somehow, there’s always room for one more passenger.
In this proximity, nothing is really private.
I’m watching a breakup occur via text message.
I’d look away if there was room to turn my head.
He’s tired. she’s tired. I’m tired.
3 hours of sleep leads to the hazy ins and outs of clear thought.
Each one a fragmented part of a whole.
Sweat trickles down my back, a line of moisture rapidly cooling in the night wind.
Enveloped in darkness.
Faces illuminated by devices.
And here we are entertaining ourselves watching others live their lives through a screen.
My knees are digging into someone’s ribs.
There’s room for one more passenger.
