Let me get this out of the way:

Yes, this report comes from Al Jazeera, deal with it.

I wanted to get that out of the way in case someone thinks that the source of the video is supposed to mean something. It doesn’t. It’s a good report on something that I think is relevant.

What about the Chinese in Dakar?

The video looks at the effect that a large influx of Chinese immigrants is having on Dakar, Senegal. The locals are claiming that Senegal is being made into an economic colony of China, and they are none too pleased.

The locals feel that their way of doing business is being threatened by the Chinese and their “cheaper, faster, more” mentality.

I see something completely different. I see a nimble competitor coming in to a market and satisfying the customer’s needs better than the local businesses had been.

One thing that strikes me, is the difference in perception between the Chinese and the Senegalese business people. The Chinese see Senegal as a land of opportunity, where the water is clean, the fish are plentiful etc. The Senegalese business people, see poverty and recession.

There’s a point where a Senegalese business man points out that he sells quality shoes, imported from Italy, that last forever. Whereas the Chinese shoe stores sell cheap Chinese made shoes that don’t last. I think he’s missing the point.

Yes, quality is important, but repeat buyers are more important. Consumers may only buy 1 pair of good shoes a year, but they’ll buy 5 or 6 pairs of cheap “utilitarian” shoes every year.

What do you think?

Are the Chinese destroying the local Senegalese economy, or are they just better at selling what consumers want to buy?

You shouldn’t be able to get away with hate anywhere. You shouldn’t be a demagogue. You should clearly state your intentions when you want to get elected into office.

I like that she opposes reviewing the 14th amendment, and I don’t necessarily disagree about police checking immigration status of suspects, provided they check EVERYONE’S status.

I don’t like her hints of demagoguery.

What else have you got GOP? Seems like all you have are potential demagogues and racists. Not that you’re much different from the Democrats in that respect.

Can some party just throw me a bone?

I like how this article addresses this issue. At times, I struggle with the idea of whether I’m a “journalist” or not.

It used to be, that only people that were published in a magazine, or a newspaper were “real” journalists. The rest of us were just “wannabees” or “not good enough to get a job writing for the paper” or the second rung plain and simple “bloggers.”

Bottom line, I keep a “journal” which makes me a by default makes me a “journalist.” The thing is, that it’s more complicated than that.

I like how the article explores the question of “acts of journalism” and whether or not something has “journalistic value.” I’ll be the first to admit that I hardly ever commit “acts of journalism” and that most of my stuff has little to no “journalistic value” but does that really make it any less important?

What do you think?

Amplify’d from www.salon.com

If you’re a creator of media, and most of us are these days in one way or another, what should I call you?

Why do I ask? I’m finishing up a new book, called “Mediactive,” to be published this fall. My primary goals are to persuade people to become much more active users, not passive consumers, of media. Part of this is what we’ve traditionally called “media literacy” — among other things, applying critical thinking to what we consume. And because we are all becoming creators in the Digital Age, it also means we need to apply some basic principles so people will trust what we say (assuming we want to be trusted).

One of my dilemmas has been what to call these new trusted media creators. In the era of scarcity, when there were relatively few outlets, many of them were called “journalists.”

This isn’t only my problem, and it’s more than just semantics. Asking the question in the right way has real-world impacts. So-called shield laws, for example, aim to protect whistle-blowers and the journalists whom they tell about government or corporate wrongdoing. Some states specify who counts as a journalist, which leaves out a huge range of people who effectively practice journalism nowadays; it also encourages a pernicious, back-door licensing of journalists. The right approach, if we need shield laws at all, is to protect acts of journalism.

As digital media become ubiquitous and more and more of us communicate and collaborate online, every person is capable of doing something that has journalistic value. Quite reasonably, relatively few of these folks imagine themselves as journalists, and they’d laugh if you called them one.

Suppose you spot a couple of items online that you want me and other people interested in, say, folk music to see. You forward the links, along with short excerpts and a brief comment explaining why these items are worthwhile, to a mail list. If I tell you, “That was an act of journalism: You curated, aggregated, wrote commentary and created meta-data,” your response, appropriately, will be, “Huh? I was just forwarding some links.”

You can never have too many friends … except maybe on Facebook.

In a lawsuit filed against the world’s largest social network, Maryland resident Karen Beth Young claims Facebook disabled her account the day after she launched a page asking users to join her in petitioning Facebook to raise its 5,000-friend limit.

According to the complaint filed last month, Young joined the site in February 2010, launching a personal profile as well as two pages inspired by both her mother and sister’s battles with breast cancer, “Cancer Forum” and “Cartesian Plane for the Cure.”
Through these pages, Young “started to establish some very sincere relationships. Albeit online, they were genuine and heartfelt,” the complaint reads.

Young’s personal profile soon reached Facebook’s 5,000-friend limit, leading her to launch a public figure page, which has no friend limit, but “does not offer many warmer, interpersonal features.” Hence, the petition page — though whether that’s the catalyst for Young’s Facebook banishment is unclear.

Facebook’s opaque boilerplate e-mails to Young, filed within the complaint surfaced by Forbes (via tech law professor Eric Goldman) provide little insight. In the complaint, Young “alleges breach of contract, violation of her constitutional rights, and violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act — Young has bipolar disorder.”

Unsatisfied with the written responses she received, and unable to raise anyone on the phone, Young drove from Maryland to Facebook headquarters in California where she says she was told by an employee, “Oh, people have driven farther than you, from Canada.” Once there, Young said her account was reinstated, but again shut down by the time she drove back across the country and home.

I love this article. I have to admit, every time I link to, or say something nice about an Alex Jones article or site, I always feel like my name is getting added to a watch list somewhere.

I love the part where the author says:

the return of the Neo-con faction is in an all out assault against the foundations of our country, the two things which make the United States of America unique in the world, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I also really like that he calls SB1070 “Arizona’s racial profiling law” which is one of the names that I’ve been calling that law. The other name I like to use is “Jim Crow 2.0.”

I’m glad to see I’m not the only person that noticed the assault by the neocons on the constitution. Hopefully more people will become aware of the neocon’s true agenda.

In the past few weeks, amidst the consequences of the of the Gulf Coast oil catastrophe, the storming and murder of unarmed aid activists in the aid flotilla by Israeli commandos, and the continuing financial crises that have mounted from sub-primes to a full fledged sovereign debt crisis that’s wiping out countries, an innocuous religious center has taken the attention of the country away in a manner reminiscent of the worst of the McCarthy era. The outright demagoguery, vilifying, and demonization has taken to the airwaves, television, and the Internet in a manner which no longer alarms the astute, but demolishes the foundation of what makes us Americans via a new, publicly visible referendum.

I’m not going to address the constitutionality 1 of the New York City (NYC) Sufi Islamic community center, nor am I going to rebuff the demagogues with the facts2 pertaining to the Sufi3 Muslims, Sufi Imam Rauf4, or about the positive contribution of this community to NYC and our country5 before the well known islamaphobe and incendiary Pamela Geller7 turned a community center with a pool, basketball court, and culinary center,6 into a divisive political football. The reason why is because so many other brilliant, intelligent, well read and researched writers have already written about this. In addition, in a willfully ignorant populace that distinguishes between Catholic, Protestant, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Christian Scientist, Mormon and Jehovah’s witness as different, yet in a hypocritical double standard, refuses to acknowledge that Islam, just like Christianity, is composed of vastly differing sects with the same breadth and scope in variety of views, like Sunni, Shia, Sufi, Ahmadiyya, Wahabbist and Salafi, among others, it makes no sense to beleager this point on those who choose ignorance. Besides, other’s are doing a better job of this than I can.

I am going to expose the brilliant tactics that the Neo-con co-opted republican and Tea Party, which I’ll refer to as Neo-cons 2.0, is employing to avenge their policy defeat in the presidential elections of 2008, highlight their opportunism to enforce a neo-fascist agenda, and reveal their primary goal: the destruction of the Constitution and Bill of Rights via public referendum displays, because those two documents block their efforts to create a fascist state to advance their Project for a New American Century, the Pax America Imperium.

By now, the politically astute recognize that the Neo-cons chose the Constitution as its target for destruction, because a democratic republic is at odds with a worldwide military Imperium.8 A public assault on the first amendment on the freedom of speech and religious expression via the issue of the Sufi community center in NYC creates a visible public referendum on the first amendment. This is the danger of this issue. Along those lines, proposed mosques and Islamic community centers all across the country, none of whom have any connection, at all, to terrorism, or even the Wahabbist sect9, a sect which is the primary source for extremism, are under fire, attack, terrorism, and harassment as in the case of the recent bombing of a Florida mosque, while the mainstream media silence presents their overt stance and, I might add, collusion with the Neo-con agenda. 10, 11

In addition, the Arizona racial profiling law, and the efforts by multiple states across the country12 to put these exact same laws into practice, is an attack against amendments four and fourteen regarding search without a warrant, and breach of civil rights. And finally there’s the attack on the fourteenth amendment, against a native born American’s right to citizenship. 13

It’s a cultural war with military, civil, and worldwide implications, and at its core, it’s a nationalist, fascist, trotskyite war against the foundations of America. It’s nationalism only for those who fit in the definition of what an elite, fluidly changing, biased group describes as “American.” It’s a Trotskyite war, for a revolution against the Constitution, and for forced revolution against all peoples worldwide, via the generous use of military power and coercion, where the ends justifies the means, to force American “values” at the point of a gun, but mostly to maintain and extend American corporate interests.8

In short, the return of the Neo-con faction is in an all out assault against the foundations of our country, the two things which make the United States of America unique in the world, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These two documents are all that separates us from every other two bit nation in the world. This is what makes us Americans, and it’s under attack, not just by the Neo-cons, senators and representatives of the right wing, but by an unruly, functionally illiterate, and emotionally unstable mob that won’t stop to think and reason.
