twenty fourteen was a significant year for us. it holds a lot of firsts, memories and growth. i hope i never have a year that doesn't feel like it's propelling me forward and fortunately [2014] did just that.

top ten moments, lessons, gift counting, sanctifying opportunities for growth in no particular order.

1. marriage is so freaking hard, but oh so worth it. sixteen years in with my guy, fourteen in our marriage covenant and every year gets better. we are zero parts perfect, but one hundred parts committed to until death do us part. the most significant part of our marriage is jesus, our second is laughter. randy is ridiculous and i wouldn't change a single thing because laughing with him is my favorite thing to do.

2. we graduated from college! i mean rb did...no but really oh.my.word having a spouse work full time and go to college full time is [NOT] for the faint of heart. BUT holy cow am i [PROUD] of my guy. the guy who hated school, hated reading, graduated early just to get out of school ...and to graduate with me... not only went back to school, did awesome, earned his bachelor's degree, and like a boss landed a great job! did i mention we are discussing returning for a masters? so proud!

3. hawaii. oh yes we did and oh yes we loved it. i have this wanderlust issue and this trip did not help, because i seriously tried to convince randy to move us there. the kids enjoyed it just a tad, too. simply stunning and so many fun and free things to do in nature...we were in heaven, except the whole expensive as heck to live there thing. (if you ever find yourself visiting oahu, i'll give you my must see list.) so many great memories made as a family and with grandparents, a treasured trip indeed.

4. i rocked a weight loss challenge at the beginning of the year. and then promptly got [LAZY]. so lazy. when i started i was stocked to finally feel ready and then after the rush of my success faded and the challenge ended i realized wanting short term results trumped long term success. and that will never get me to my end goal...healthy. [BUT] the challenge did help me become aware of so much. to love myself at any weight, but to fight for the healthiest version of myself. that encouragement feels pretty amazing, and spreading it around like glitter is more fun than receiving it. and most important, that every single day is a new opportunity for a fresh start.

5. volleyball for my girl was so fun and so hard. she made so many friends and learned so much about volleyball, but she also learned what it is to keep a commitment when you want to give up. i had an opportunity to be her advocate while trying to navigate where to let life lessons happen and it was all so hard and so good and i pray she never gives in when the going gets tough, but always always stands up for herself even when it's uncomfortable.

6. this guy. watching him in his element nearly split me in half bursting with pride and falling apart because he is fifteen...how did that happen? he had fantastic coaches who pushed him to be a man with integrity and then a good football player. he shined as quarterback and learned so much about team work. he made so many friends and was mentored by some outstanding young men. my favorite memory was seeing him get choked up at the last game because a friend who he prayed with before every game is graduating and it was his last game.

7. #bday35raok has been a highlight for me personally, but watching my kids get on board has given me so much JOY! my favorite for sure was volunteering at the compassion international sponsorship table at a shane & shanne // phil wickham concert. i loved how they interacted with each person who came up and how it was a tangible opportunity to see how serving can impact generations. [SIXTEEN] kids were sponsored...so exciting. my plan to finish before my birthday was derailed a bit with the busyness of the holidays, but it was an opportunity to let go of expectations and realize that kindness doesn't have an expiration date and should actually be a daily exercise in gratitude.

8. my girl. we are two peas in a pod to the point that we butt heads errrrday. my heart desires so deeply to be the first person she turns to, her safe place, her confidant. i know that requires two things: her own free will and relationship. i made it my mission this year to pursue her heart like never before and do my best to love her well despite both of our very fleshly personalities. i am seeing the wall fall before my eyes and it is such a tender and precious thing to behold. at thirteen she has one foot in adolescence and one inching towards becoming a very independent young woman and i'm doing my very best to bend to the Father's will for her and not my own. i love being her mama.

9. we added a co-op program to our home school curriculum this semester and it has been the best investment to date. the kids are [THRIVING] and making so many friends. between co-op and our amazing friend vena who happens to be their math teacher have saved our home school experience. i love my kids, my kids love me, but: a. mama needs a break from time to time b. i know the limits to my capabilities c. mama needs a break from time to time d. vena is a saint sent from heaven e. mama needs a break from time to time. i am so very thankful that each year is becoming more and more peaceful for the carlisle classroom.

10 a. micah, oh how this sweet nugget has brought us so much joy! i have 'kept' micah for almost three years and we are ever so fond of him. our time together on a daily basis is coming to an end and it is bittersweet...i am looking forward to being able to give more time to the kids and have a more flexible schedule, but he has impacted us greatly and our days will miss his belly laugh and quick quips! we love you buddy!

10 b. another chapter closed and that was my hobby turned side business of sewing and selling vintage items on instagram. i owe so much to so many supportive friends and family who bought, shared and encouraged me along the way, but one special lady gave me a huge push and when i closed i ended up selling over 100 of my clutches, not to mention my other vintage and handmade sales. certainly not the success kate has had, but a [HUGE] accomplishment for me and blessing to our family. it has been such a fun experience, but i am thankful for a husband who encouraged me when i needed it and gently helped me to decide when it was time to lay down the shop to concentrate on the kids and homeschooling. i for one am so thankful to have time for creating for myself and love ones without the pressures of sewing for profit.

[2014] was good to us and we are so thankful for what God has in store for 2015. wishing all our friends and family near and far all the very best as a new year kicks off.

i'm not one to get anxious over turning another year older, but this mary oliver quote has stirred in me a lot this year.

it has provoked an inner dialogue of how to practically apply that to my life. is it a big risk? big plans? calculated or off the cuff? is it out loud or silent? with trembling fear or tears of great joy? i think it's all that and more. so often i feel myself stuck because the steps to get to the end seem so insurmountable that i'm frozen in time, never moving forward, but actually dragging behind. god has made me for so much more. and so, with very little money to press on and a whole lot of heart i dreamed a dream (name that movie) to sprinkle kindness to celebrate 35 years. 35 days to celebrate my 35 years in a hope and prayer that it impacts a ripple effect of love in me, in my kids, in my home, in my community, and beyond. because why dream small when the sky is the limit. so today marks 35 days until my birthday and i will share a list of ways to spread kindness, random acts of kindness (raok) that my family will be taking part in. there is no prize and there are no rules, but i'd love to see you share the journey. i'll be posting my progress on my instagram account and if you take part i'd love to see your snapshots of offering kindness, so be sure to use the hashtag #bday35raok.

hello.

i kind of duck and covered for awhile. this space is for transparency and i needed a bit to balance how to do that with authenticity and grace. life has been good, rich in mercy. life has been hard, thick with change and trials. but today, today is time to talk about thirty.

random picture {thanks hubby for entertaining my silly requests} to celebrate a huge feat for me.

thirty pounds lost!!! last week i was at twenty-two pounds lost and couldn't imagine the victory that lay ahead.

i've committed to a six week weight loss challenge called a little too fluffy by my girls carina and danielle and this is the last week. eek.

i'm a yo-yo. i get pumped to lose weight and it lasts a day, a week at best...with real intention. but this time, something clicked. i've had a lot of people ask me about 'what i'm doing' and so i thought a blog post was the easiest way to do that. i also, want to document my journey...because this is it, the long haul transition to health. and plus also, it was important to get it all out while i had the guts {i'm...gulp...going to talk numbers, as in weight later} before the contest ends because the reality is no matter what happens {cliche or not} i've already won.

the first step was to make a commitment with some short & long term goals. i know that sounds obvious, but i truly would have quit without a commitment and set goals. the accountability of a weekly weigh in has been great and the prize money was a good motivator...especially when a series of unfortunate events started to happen mid contest like our only vehicle dying. those are still great, but once the pounds started to shed, my clothing started to fit loosely and i started to notice things the reward took on new meaning. my goal for the first six weeks during this contest is 32 pounds...i'm TWO away. that feels amazing. my long term goal is 100 pounds by the end of the year, broken down into a 2-3 pound weight loss per week after the contest.

before you mathematicians start calculating and get an idea of how much i do weigh, here are the details. i am 5'7" and i started this journey at 282 pounds. when i first sent in my weight i was blown away. i've tipped the scales at 290 and there was no way i was going to hit 300. so let me back up a little here and talk about how i got to 282 and shed some light on how it feels to be overweight and in my case...obese.

being overweight means you constantly yank at your clothing to make sure everything is covered. being overweight means you make sure to snag a sturdy chair in a group setting so you don't embarrass yourself. being overweight means every clothing you have has food stains because you drip stuff when you are that far from your plate. being overweight means you don't ride the ride, participate in the activity or join in on the fun if there is a possibility your weight will make you look foolish...or worse prevent you from participating. being overweight means your feet and back ache everyday. being overweight means you feel guilty that you are contributing to your poor health that could ultimately rob your family of their mother and wife. i could go on.

282 was my starting weight because i let every lie and every hurt and every trial become calories i consumed. a hard day for me looked like soda after soda. a hard night for me looked like me sitting in front of the tv for mind numbing hours until i was hungry for a fourth meal and decided, what the heck let's pick the worst possible thing and eat that.

i also want to be clear, i am an addict. i used food to numb whatever emotion i wanted to forget. food addiction isn't like drugs and alcohol. i can't stop eating, but i can change the way in which i eat and the reasons i choose to eat.

in this journey i have become fascinated with a tv show called my 600 lb life. i get a glimpse into what could have so easily become my life and i sympathize with these people who also let life's pain become the calories that they eat. the most recent show's patient made this statement, "food may hurt you physically, but doesn't hurt you emotionally." exactly. there is some truth to the idea of comfort food. then she said, "life isn't a matter of chance, it's a matter of choice. once you begin to understand that you will begin to live." profound.

i love jesus, but i made food my idol and source of comfort. the weight didn't make me ashamed, how i got to it did. but his mercy is everlasting and he sustained me even when i turned away.

and so i decided if i believed that anything is possible with god, then let's do this. let's do the hard things.

it started with changing what i ate. if god grew it then i can eat it. it's taken discipline, but i'm undoing years and years of bad choices. {those pork rinds are the hubby's...he's on board, with extremely slooooow baby steps.}

it's learning that i can be satisfied with foods that taste good and are good for me...i know rocket science, huh?!

it's deciding that food isn't the celebration, life is. food is to fuel and keep my temple healthy. and it's been fun dabbling with new things and creating different meals. {that's baked acorn squash with a black bean burger & topped with an egg}

and again and again and again...do the hard things. i shared this picture on instagram explaining that i had just finished playing baseball with my family. i have six brothers, who in turn with my only sister and I, have six boys. and they all love baseball. so much so, that we often gather on sunday afternoons to eat & play in my brother's backyard. we have dubbed it 'baseball sunday'. i watch, i do not play...until this day. i have zero skill, but i ran, i hit, i finished. that was a defining moment for me. i participated...and it was awesome.

so how does all that add up to losing thirty pounds? well, i'll share what has worked for me, but i want to be very clear that none of this would have worked for me without choosing to change. very much like any addict it's a daily choice. sometimes it's a minute by minute choice. but it is worth it, because i am worth it.

i love bob harper and have used a lot of these suggestions, but really try to apply the eat berries everyday and a protein at every meal. i added eating an apple and banana everyday as well, since i heard those were good for weight loss too.
i cut out all sodas and have very limited caffeine {i've only had coffee 3-4 times in the last 5 weeks, as opposed to a cup or two daily}, i also cut out all alcohol. basically, i am not going to drink my calories, it isn't worth it to me.
because of that i drink lots of water. i use a 20 oz insulated Starbucks tumbler to keep up with my intake. sometimes it's low at around 40 oz and sometimes i drink 56 oz or more.
to break old habits, i don't eat after 8pm. i've broke this one once in the last 5 weeks.
i eat as little sugar as possible. i haven't let the amounts on my fitness pal throw me since most of my intake is natural, but i have indulged a few times but always in moderation and try to substitute agave and honey where I can.
mid challenge i got...stay in bed for days...sick and it threw me off my work out schedule. it's slowly picking up. prior to that, i tried to exercise everyday. i switch it up a lot. i walk/jog/run on my treadmill, bike on my stationary bike, biked with my son at a nearby track, wii zumba, refit dvds, yoga & pilates dvds.
i try to eat as whole/raw as possible. for example i will cut up 1 cup of berries, 1 apple, 1 bell pepper & a couple of baby carrots for lunch and pair that with either an egg and turkey breakfast sausage or nitrite free lunch meat that has a laughing cow cheese wedge half spread on it and raw spinach inside for a roll up. which means i am still eating processed foods, but i'm trying to be very selective based on nutrients and calories.
raspberry ketone three times daily with meals. i take quite a bit of vitamins as a proactive holistic approach to my health in general so this wasn't hard to add to the mix. dr. oz has spoken highly of it and is part of it's recent popularity.
i use my fitness pal religiously. i haven't adjusted my dinner meal much, but i have worked on disciplining my portion control and added healthier versions of family favorites. i typically start by entering dinner at the beginning of the day {meal planning is essential} to spread out my calories and make choices based on my calorie intake & nutrient goals. it helps to not splurge at snack time, too.
one trick for adding my dinner meals to my fitness pal is using calorie count to calculate the calories since a lot of times i am throwing things together or using a recipe.
motivation and inspiration are big keys to my success. my biggest inspiration has been my amazing sil, laryn. amidst so many obstacles she has kicked weight in the teeth and has already lost SIXTY pounds...to say i am proud of her is an understatement! i also have a beautiful friend marta who along with her equally stunning sisters are passionately sharing the knowledge about health and weight loss on their joint blog, four fit sisters. i highly recommend following them on instagram for daily inspiration and monthly workout goals. diana smith, this girl has no idea how she has motivated me! girlfriend has lost 100 stinking pounds and isn't stopping! she recently shared her starting & current weight and was a big reason why i felt brave enough to do the same. she is a daily source of encouragement...love her & so happy for her success! {catch her sharing her story on the rachel ray show tomorrow!} and this book....made to crave. i've picked it up and put it down several times and just like the time to lose weight was now, so is this book. the perfect companion to shift my focus off food and on the father.
support system. my hubby and kids are my biggest cheerleaders. but, i also have amazing friends and family who are my weekly check in text posse. with this challenge requiring me to weigh weekly, i have made it a habit to send out texts to the posse and i am always encouraged by their excitement and cheers. i truly am so very well loved.

with all that said i'm human and there is some ebb and flow to those rules, i try not to get overwhelmed by them and give myself grace. my main focus has been to get healthy. i am not a doctor {obviously} and i am learning as i go, so if something else works for you then go for it! i wanted an opportunity to share what has been successful for me with the hope that it can help someone else. i will say that for me it was very important not to make this a diet. i don't want to do this for quick results...although it is a perk, but for long term health. my ultimate goal is to prolong my life as long as possible. no one is guaranteed tomorrow, but it was important for me to try my best to ward off ms symptoms and give myself the best chance at a long healthy life. for me and my family.

This. Major conviction for me.

I shared yesterday how I am calling this releasing the words. Funny that is exactly what I need to do.

I help a few ladies from my church lead a small group of the middle school and high school age girls in our church. We are reading Graceful, by Emily Freeman and we recently touched on how we present ourselves to one another. The example of cussing came up and it was a gut check. It's not something I'm especially proud of, but it's an expression of the sin I let into my life. That's not condemnation for you, hear my heart, it is sin for me. Sin I am aware of and have not been able to overcome. And as I thought of that, the verse above was brought to mind. I have it in my home as a reminder of an area I need to seek grace for because I can't do it alone.

There's a nursery rhyme you should remember from growing up...

Sticks and stones

may break my bones

but, words will never hurt me.

Words do hurt.

On an especially trying day of motherhood, the Lord led me to Proverbs 15:1 and I posted this picture on Instagram. I'm pretty sure I posted something about needing it tattooed to my forehead...I elected sharpie on my palm. As my patience dissolves the octave of my voice rises. I could give so many excuses, but they don't eliminate the impact my behavior has on my children's hearts.

I know I will never achieve a sinless life. I know there is grace and forgiveness. I still long for a day when my words are quick to encourage before they are quick to correct. That they are words spoken in kindness and not in anger. That they would be pleasing to the Father in all ways. That this would be the truth of my home:

Yesterday {today...ugh, I digress} I shared this concept of releasing the words. I suppose it isn't quite a concept without an explanation. In a nutshell, I believe I'm "doing" this series wrong. I'm certain I am creating rules for this in my inner dialogue, being my worst critic and all, therefore there are no rules to be doing anything wrong.

I set out to let the Lord speak and he is. I also attempted to not have an opinion about what that looked like and the reality is I am human with sin nature and I had already put God in a box. I was sure that each post would be words gifted from heaven and elegant and life changing and and and. What seems to be happening is more like an extended version of Judy Blume's, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.

If you have ever read this gem, you know the preface of her ongoing dialogue with God. It's more or less and inner commentary of her thoughts, her own narrator if you will. That's a lot like me. I fumble through the day talking to God. My most prized time being in the shower. It seems to be the place I slow enough to breathe. Other times it's through gritted teeth, please Lord let them obey. Or through tears, fresh with worry. Or smiles, thankful for sweet reminders of His nearness. Or on and on. I'm not a bible scholar, but I have a knack for my personal prayer time. It's become my sanity, my stable calm in the storm.

And, so I translate the releasing of the words to mean, are you there God? It's me, Jenni. Instead of me retreating and claiming this to be a dismal failure, I will proceed in writing about how I speak to Him and how He responds. He doesn't bellow back, "I am." Nor does he whisper his presence. He is steady. I feel him all the time inviting me into worship, relationship, into a covenant of grace, hope and mercy. Today He is speaking faithfulness because he is near. He is near for me, for Margaret and for you.

Here again, late...well after I should be in bed. I'm restless. I would love to say I've set the tone with the perfect ambiance of peaceful worship music, a flickering candle and a warm cup of joe. Alas, it is not. It is however, been replaced with the murmur of the television and the knocking of overalls in the dryer. I'd still be here in this place of questions I can't answer and prayers I'm willing with all my might to play out in my favor, so this is as good a place as any to release the words.

That's what I'm calling this...releasing the words, releasing the feelings.

This relationship I keep with the Father is my safe place. When a ripple hits the water and I'm bewildered with the change, He is there. Or so enamored with tranquility I never notice, it's because He is there.

This safe place doesn't keep me from feeling the hurts from words spoken or wounds from relationships broken or the discourse left behind from lies believed.

In all of it, the truth is I am loved. I am valued. I am worthy, whether someone else sees that or not.

I love the show Parenthood.

I fell in love with the series Brothers and Sisters by way of re-runs.

Both remind me of my family. This zany cast of characters with big personalities and big voices scrambling to do the best they can. The lot of them equal part failing miserably to smashing success all with the appropriate combination of comedic relief and dramatic suspense.

Good television.

At least I think so.

One could dissect the shoddy parenting, life choices, boisterous family gatherings and the insanely nosy thread they all share. But no one could deny the passion they share to love one another deeply.

I come from a big family and I married into a big family. It's a bit of a zoo. Finding a voice can be a challenge. Growing up my aspirations were to be an actress...the theatrical version not the on screen variety. I loved preparing for a role, losing myself in the storyline. The closing curtain was bittersweet, the culmination of hard work and the end to another pocket of time. Time that I was able to become someone else. See life through another lens.

Once I tried out for a Jewish role in a concentration camp. The role would be incredibly challenging, but I was motivated so I would have an excuse to shave my head. I was a senior in high school. My seasoned and level headed Director cast me as a Nazi guard. Not quite a year later, I would find myself in my college freshman theater class and I was practicing a scene were I was to kiss my partner. I was engaged to be married and pregnant. I dropped the class.

One year, very different perspectives. I don't regret dropping my class. In fact, I'm glad I did. But, somewhere along the way I laid down my passion to pursue motherhood and being a wife. I never felt I was giving one up for another, but in a blur you look back and 15 years has passed. It makes you pause to examine your life. To compare your teenage aspirations to your adult goals. And what I find and know to be true is that I am exactly where I should be. What I also have discovered is that I lost a little of my brave. The part of me that was fearless and thought I was unstoppable.

So what does being brave have to do with the show Parenthood? I watched the season premiere last week and was struck by the scene shared by the character Christina who was recently given a clean bill of health after being diagnosed with cancer and her friend, Gwen who also has cancer and has relapsed. Christina is contemplating helping a local politician run for mayor. Indecisive about her decision, Gwen offers this advice to Christina, "Don't wait, don't wait for anything. If this is something you want to do, you need to do it. If there's anything 'this' taught us, it's that there's no waiting. This is not the dress rehearsal, this is it."

Profound.

As a wife and mother in the thick of homeschooling two teenagers it's easy for me to think God can't use me. That he didn't prepare me for such a time is this. Maybe his plan isn't for me to be an actress, but I don't need some grand standing call on my life to be brave. And I surely don't need one to obey, follow and be used by God.

I know this post is a jumbled mess of words. So am I. I feel all the feelings all the time and they bounce around in my mind fighting to get out. But what I'm trying to convey is that being open to be used by the Lord is the easy part (for me anyway), the go and gets tough with the follow through. So, I'm going to pray for the brave. It's already in me because He is in me. Let's do it, let's be brave together.

I sat tonight pondering the day, asking the Father to speak. I thought surely this would be easier and yet no topic materialized. When I prayed over what 31 Days would look like for me, I clearly wanted a shift in my heart when this time came to a close. Keeping with the idea that it takes 30 days to make a habit, I wanted to give myself to this 'experiment' as authentically as possible and let the Lord speak...uninhibited by my flesh. And so I sat, not wanting to throw words together but persevere in patience.

When still nothing came to mind I went to the bookshelf that holds among it the bible that belonged to my paternal Great Great Great Grandmother and thumbed through for inspiration. I found a newspaper clipping bookmarking Ezekiel. So I pulled out my Life Application Study Bible and read through the preface of what the book of Ezekiel covers.

I loved this:

Restoration: Ezekiel consoles the people by telling them that the day will come when God will restore those who turn from sin. God will be their King and shepherd. He will give his people a new heart to worship him, and he will establish a new government and a new temple.

The certainty of restoration encourages believers in times of trial. But we must be faithful to God because we love him, not merely in our future benefits.

The part that left an impression on me was the second excerpt. The certainty of restoration encourages believers in times of trial. But we must be faithful to God because we love him, not merely in our future benefits. I was reminded of the time I spent discussing today's Jesus Calling devotional with the kids. Today's topic Come to Me closed with, "What I want is to be their hiding place -- and yours. Let Me heal your hurts and give you a quiet place for your soul to rest. Come to Me, and I will give you rest." We read the listed scriptures, finishing with Matthew 11:28.

While the devotional pointed to seeking Him in times of trials, I took a slightly different approach. In retrospect the approach my heart is dealing with. We discussed how easy it is as believers for us to rush to the Father in times of unrest. We pursue his face with petitions of how to change a situation, heal a body, to bring restoration, and the list flows deep from there. But we are called to a relationship in all the ebbs and flows of life. He is the source of life in all things.

The parallel of these coming together stung. The reference to be faithful to the Father in all days and in all ways, not just in times of benefit. To come with our burdens, yes but also with our joys. To come with our brokenness, but also with a restored heart of thanksgiving. How easy, how complacent I can become in seeking out the Father's healing for my laundry list of woes and yet in the time of wholeness I drift.

As I contemplated it all I starred at these books filled with wisdom and smiled at their origin.

One that spans generations with it's weathered cover and family lineage scrawled inside. One that shares sweet moments with my babes, discovering the Lord's truth together. One that my groom gave me with my forever name imprinted on it. One loving selected by my biggest of big brothers.

The Lord gave me a tangible moment to show my unbelieving eyes that he sees me. I needed the reminder of the love that surrounds me when I want to give root to the lies the enemy plants. The truth is I am a joy counter. I seek beauty and count it joy, but I also absorb pain and wallow in it too. The later beckons me to lay it at the Father's feet, but in the fullness of joy I should also rejoice.

And so I will continue to count joys, strive not to give way to lies, and in all ways give thanks to glory and goodness of God.

Joining in with the 31 Days is a stretch for me. When I started writing several years ago it was a way to record memories, a place to share my thoughts, a place to file away the days. Fast forward and it has been a journey of those things and more, but yet I don't have much to show for that. Limited knowledge of code and some silly errors on my part and a good deal of my writing is floating away in cyberspace. Other pieces through the years are places only my heart knows....be it the incredible friendships forged through baring your heart on the interwebs or the stories too tender too share. All that to say, sweet Jessi shared her choice to join the 31 Day bloggers and I knew it was time to get back to writing. In that moment that I knew I should join the thought, "word of God speak" popped into my mind. As I processed that as a topic, the song of the same name by Mercy Me was brought to my mind.

The beginning lyrics convey exactly what I will be writing about...inadvertently what God is speaking to me.

I'm finding myself at a loss for words
And the funny thing is it's okay
The last thing I need is to be heard
But to hear what You would say

I first shared of my 31 Day topic on Instagram, sharing that most recently I have been vacant from this place due to some trials I have endured in the last few years. Heartache is more like it. I am not a victim, because for as mush as I have endured I have been responsible for my own misjudgements, careless words, unforgiveness, the list is long. In this time away I have lamented, I have prayed, I have called on the Father and I have wept. And, so I want to practice even more intentionality and in turn transparency with 31 Days of letting the Lord speak. I intend to wait on him, to seek his face and share the journey. I have no idea what that will look like. Maybe a quote, a scripture, a song, a blog post will be shared and how it spoke to me...maybe something entirely different. What I do know is I am expectant. He is trustworthy to give my burdens to and he is worthy to lavish my praise on. Yes, word of God speak.

Celebrating Carter {FIVE years post transplant} and a Giveaway!

I haven't blogged since Carter's fifth birthday and here I am again almost a year later to celebrate his 5th year post transplant. Five years seems like an eternity when we talk about our sweet Carter and his amazing journey.

He is an incredibly smart and a spunky cutie pie and we can't imagine our family without him. This day is such a precious reminder of how fleeting time is and how incredibly fragile life is. Our family will be indebted to the family who so bravely chose to give life in the face of loss.

I can't imagine the thoughts racing through Sean and Chelle's minds in those many many many days in the hospital. The prayers begging God to spare Carter. The tears flowing for the umpteenth time. The gnawing feeling of the unknown with each conversation they had with medical personnel.

Seeing this sweet picture on his first day of kindergarten was surely a hallelujah moment! I'm so proud of Sean and Chelle for never expecting anything less than the best for Carter and then fighting for it. They have consistently shown me that love is just as much a part of the healing process as medicine.

Chelle has a beautiful gift for capturing Carter's sweet personality in every picture she shoots. His smile quite literally lights up a room! Oh we are thankful for this precious nugget! I'm so thankful he has had so many opportunities to live life to it's very fullest!

While he was in the hospital I took this picture and felt the Lord highlight the verse Isaiah 58:11. It is one I have prayed over and over since. As with Carter's fight into this world and in the first few year's of his life, each day is a gift and each day isn't guaranteed to be without complication. As I post this he is fresh out of the hospital from a bout of pneumonia and pink eye.

Carter is our real life superhero. He never stops smiling. He never stops reminding us of his zest for life. He never lets us give up on miracles.

And so we celebrate this incredible boy today! Our family is scheduled to enjoy a balloon release and cupcakes in honor of our amazing Carter Bear and hope you will join in the fun! {What The Baby Books Don't Tell You} A Guest Post at Life ReArranged

When Jeanett first asked me to write this post I thought she was cray cray. ME? The girl who hasn't blogged since...ahem December? And then I heard a small voice say, yes You. You have something to impart to other Moms. And then another voice began to argue with that voice. A back and forth discounting worth and wisdom. It's a game I like to play. It's called talk yourself out of anything that temps the boundaries of your comfort zone. I purposefully have yet to read the other contributions, because I knew I would lament about whether or not I measured up to these other Moms. Moms who I've journeyed with for years. Some knowingly some unknowingly. I've mourned with, prayed for, laughed til I cried, jumped with joy, all the while carrying them in my heart.

So as I pondered this concept Jeannett proposed, What The Baby Books Don't Tell You, my first thought was oh no what in the world do I talk about.....I never read those books. You see my husband and I were welcomed into parenthood by a beautiful baby boy as teenagers and unmarried. He 18 and I 20, were young and in love and barely able to manage a check book. Okay let's be honest, we couldn't do that, so why in the heck were we bringing another human being into this world? What I've learned over the last twelve years of mothering is His plan is greater no matter the decisions we make to muck it up. He is good, all the time, no matter what.

I am lame at this whole blog thing. I think I ~~mentioned~~ admitted before that I write posts in my head that never make it here. So here it goes...a little ramble to catch you up on my craziness.

A few weeks ago I caught myself a cold and it kinda threw me into a tailspin. I feel good more days than bad, but that reminder that my immune system is a bit of a crap shoot, well it uh sucks frankly. I'm a bit of a whiny baby when I don't feel good, to my hubs anyway, so he is quick to remind me that I need to do a better job taking care of myself. Like taking those vitamins that keep me feeling amazing...when I take them. Or that exercise that will help make that reality of swinging on the porch swing at eighty a reality...when I do it.

Which leads me to this. I'm fat. Not big boned or I haven't lost the baby weight, just good ole fat. I am not a fan. Unfortunately, I have zero will power to make it a priority to shed this excess baggage that reminds me of my inability to complete anything. I start and stop most every new idea, fad, etc that seems right in the moment. But, those moments are fleeting and I want to figure this out for good. So I started reading Made To Crave, by Lysa TerKeurst after being encouraged by my sweet friend Erin. And wouldn't you know it a local friend, Stephanie had the video and offered to go through it with me. I'm gleaning a lot and pray God captures my heart for more of Him and less of this crap I keep putting in my body. I also started working out to a Wii Zumba game. Whoa nelly, I am getting my Cumbia on. I may not be sporting a bikini anytime soon, but one day I'm gonna run trails with my hubby and like it. {Don't tell him that goal, because he may just pester me to death about it.}

I had my first show for my shop a few weeks ago. Whoever said we are our own worst critic was so right. I did okay. I made some money, but it wasn't quite what I had in mind. I had a hard time comparing what my family gave up for me being a crazy lady the weeks prior, all the work my Hubs put into my booth display, the late nights, etc to the outcome itself. So, I've wrestled a bit. I love my little shop to pour out my creative giftings that God has placed on me, but I'd be lying if I didn't covet a little success. I'm not sure I would ever want this to become a job, but I'm really having to dig deep to find balance. I have another show coming up next weekend, so I'll let you know if time and experience heals a bruised ego.

Homeschool is losing a little bit of luster in our home. I feel like I'm almost being blasphemous with that statement. I love it, as in the idea of it and the ability to be home, but it is hard. Hard to draw the line between Mommy and teacher, work and play, being a scatterbrain and being the sole person responsible {Randy helps, but you know what I mean} for my children's education. The truth is they both struggle in a few areas of learning, one more than the other and most days I feel terribly guilty that keeping them home will prove to be more of a detriment to their education. In the end, I know that this is my calling in life. I truly feel led to educate my children in the home. What I do now is dig deep, say no when I need to, set boundaries, and pray. Any pointers?

Church. Oh that is a whooper of a topic for us. We left our last church after almost six years there...two years ago. God called us home to have church, be the church, do church. And we obeyed. I personally mourned, for awhile...like a long while. It was crazy hard. No wounds to make us leave, just the good ole Holy Spirit saying do it. The last two years have been lonely. Leaving somewhere that feels like home to not knowing the first thing about what a home church looked like for us was a paradigm shift. A lot has come from leaving. Mostly growth, but along with it growing pains. Pains that exposed some wounds we didn't realize were there and pains from judgment from others and from ourselves. BUT, we serve a God who wrote the book on redemption and we recently joined a home church group that we can't get knit into fast enough. We love it. The kids love it. We are experiencing community again in a fresh new way. In a way that is breathing new life into us and we are so very happy.

I'm sure I'm leaving gobs and gobs out. Some I'm sure you are thankful for, and the rest well if I don't start somewhere I won't start. Do you have something you have put down that brings your life joy? I encourage you to start again, and let the joy breath new life.

I spend most of my days at home...homeschooling, homemaking, because I tend to be a bit of a home body. I love my life, I love that my husband's hard work and God's blessing allows me to work in the home.

But...ya'll i can get a tad stir crazy. As such, I may or may not stalk my mailbox until the mailmen delivers. Our mailman must be on vacation because all last week homeboy dropped the mail off around dinner time and we usually get it at lunch. Normally {yeah right} I wouldn't mind, but I was expecting some goodies instead of the boring bill and junk promo promising me a million smackers in exchange for buying Cat magazines. {I kid, I kid. Cats are cool. For you.}

When my pal, Jess raved about Mat Kearney and getting to meet him {yo!} I started listening to his music and homeboy is kinda amazing! I however, rarely buy a CD, so when One2One Network offered his CD, Young Love to review I was all over that like white on rice {be jealous of my wittiness}!

I love his rustic, soulful voice paired with catchy melodies. One of my favorite things about this album is he leaves you wanting more, you can't help but love every song because it is lyrically and musically married perfectly. I pretty much keep it my purse to transfer in and out of the car so the hubs doesn't take off with it to work. Sad, but seriously that good. Here's my favorite track:

One of the things I love about blogging is the community to support handmade business'. I love finding a new treasure I've been searching for or a shop I have never heard of. Both are true of Life At The Table. Kris Hansen has a really adorable blog where she shares her heart and life. She is truly talented and has some amazing pieces {and prices} in her shop. I was so excited to stumble across her shop because I have been pinning away trying to find a quality reusable set of sandwich bags in cute fabrics. Life At The Table, definitely fit the bill. I was SO happy when her handmade happiness made it's way to Texas by way of Oregon! I can't recommend her enough...and her reusable lunch totes and bags are ADORABLE!

You made your Daddy and I work harder at loving each other and Jesus. Our love for you made us face every hurdle with courage.

Bubba I love how you love with your whole heart and are sensitive, just like Daddy! I love that you wait for me to get dressed every day just so you can say I look pretty (no matter what I'm wearing or look like!).

I love that you have talked about serving your country as a soldier since you were a little boy. And when you aren't mesmerized with that you would be content to spread the gospel and remind me we need to every chance you can get.

Motherhood is a gift. I truly love being a Momma and couldn't ask for a better job. However,

Days that feel like they can swallow you whole. On those days I try my best to press into the Father's word, maybe a girlfriend's shoulder, and sometimes beautiful bits of wisdom pour out of the hearts of the inspiring Mothers I journey with in this blogging community. I'm a big girl, that's not news to most of you. I haven't always been overweight, but as the babies came so did the pounds. And as the babies grew, so did Momma. Not exactly the plan, but soon it was effecting my health and not at all manageable. I have an amazing husband who loves me and has never made me feel less than beautiful, but when he suggested the Paleo Diet...I knew it was time. Researching it we found it would actually help me with my Multiple Sclerosis too. That is what you call win win folks.

We spent the weekend ramping up, by eating or tossing the food on the no no list. Picking me out a sweet new set of wheels and rocking helmet to match for some family style exercise. Stocking up on fruits and nuts, and portioning out our approved snackage. Making sure all our vitamins were well stocked. Replacing the batteries in the food scale. Weighing ourselves for a starting weigh in. Locating a food diary and prayer, prayer, and some more prayer. Did I mention prayer?

Funny enough today was a breeze on the diet front. No caffeine withdrawal headaches yet, although I did allow myself a cup of tea with 2 teaspoons of raw sugar. And that pic in the right corner was my monster lunch that was super delicious and filling...that one shocked me! {I cheated a little with the veggies, so the fresh produce we had on hand wouldn't go to waste.} Randy was super cute, calling frequently to check up on me and encourage me. I am super proud of us. I am CRAZY proud of myself! The closest I have ever been to dieting is fasting and I am no champion of that feat either.

I may not be sharing stats and Biggest Loser photo ops, but I will be sure to keep you in the loop of my success...because I WILL succeed!

I'm also sharing a pretty vulnerable post here, on why my kiddos told me I cuss more. Yeah not my finest moment, but that truth is leading me to Jesus and that is exactly where I want to be.
