What is ParaGard you might be asking me, well I will try to explain it as best as I can and I have also posted a picture of what it looks like to help. The ParaGard is a flexible polyethylene T shaped device which half of it has copper wire wrapped around it, and there is an internet rumor going around that the copper wire is actually nickel wire coated with copper. I haven’t had time to call the company and find out if this is true or not, but I am leaning more toward untrue since it’s in no one of the literature about the ParaGard and my doctor didn’t mention it. Not saying that things don’t get overlooked but I’m not going to throw my hat into the ring on the debate until I do more research. Got off track for a moment, anyways the ParaGard is placed into the uterus through the cervical canal by the tube it is incased in. Your gynecologist then deploys it and usually will ask you to come in a few weeks later to check placement. The copper is supposed to make for a hostile environment for sperm and if an egg does end up fertilized it’s not supposed to be able to implant. The ParaGard can stay in for up to 10 years and fertility is restored once the ParaGard is removed. It’s a super quick experience, but it is also a super painful one. Some women say that having it inserted was akin to the beginning of labor pains, I’ve never had labor pains but I can say it was the most intense cramping I’d experienced, and the pain staid for about two days with some spotting. After that things seemed well, my period didn’t really change though the cramps were more pronounced.

About four months into having the ParaGard I went through some stress. I had quit my temp job, moved to a new town, and went through rejection after rejection in trying to find a job, oh and the condo flooded. The pain started and wouldn’t really go away, and then the bleeding wouldn’t stop. In two in a half months I had only four bleed free days. The advice I got from the doctor was take three ibuprofen a day until symptoms disappeared. At that point my mood, sleep, and daily life was being interrupted. Do to the pain and just the inconvenience of a prolonged period I was in permanent PMS mode, which didn’t end once everything settled down so I had no choice but to go ahead and get the ParaGard removed.
