Life is indeed a roller coaster ride.One day you are depressed and frustrated at not being selected for a company,and suddenly, when you have realised that its going to be a struggle for survival,you get 'dream' offers for an internship and a job in a span of seven days!!!!

Finally after all the excitement,joy and satisfaction of being recruited in top notch companies(Ge Healthcare and Deloitte),it was D-day,my first day as an intern.
More often than not as an intern you expect to be put to test from the word go.But here(GE) it was different.No strict emphasis on following the working hours,but what really is important is to finish your assigned task on time and to the best of your ability and this is what it should be like!!

In no time it was the end of Jan and an enjoyable one month at work but more importantly-salary time.

Out of all the things that I have longed for till date,this truly was something special,something to cherish for a lifetime-My First Salary.

But as luck would have it,this fortunately or unfortunately coincided with my 21st birthday,as a result of which almost half of it was spent on parties in just a couple of weeks.However,the joy of throwing a party for your friends and family is worth the expenditure incurred.I guess the first salary should infact be a reason to celebrate.No sense in living like a school child once you have started earning!!!

Now,almost the end of Feb and guess what its salary time.Well,this time it would be used more judiciously but no compromising on partying,however keeping my future in mind savings are indeed the order of the day-little whatever it may be.

Google sheds Beta-Tag........finally

Well if you dont understand what the Beta tag really is,here what it means:A product with beta label on it implies that while the product is still in its testing phase it is good enough for public use,so any faults were to be excused.

Beta versions, which are sandwiched between internal "alpha" versions and final "release" versions, however have a lifespan of weeks or months at the most.

But was Gmail different? Released on April 1, 2004, it was still in beta five years millions of users later.

Finallty on July 7,2009 Gmail shed the beta label, signaling that Google considered the product to be fully fledged. Google is also removing the beta label from Calendar, Docs and Talk, three other applications that are part of a package of online software called Google Apps.

So why the wait? The official answer doesn’t entirely clarify things.

"Obviously we haven’t had a consistent set of policies or definitions around beta," Matthew Glotzbach, a director of product management at Google, said in an interview. Glotzbach said that different teams at Google had different criteria for what beta meant, and that Google felt a need to standardize those. "It was time to address the issue and bring the products out of beta," he said.

Practically speaking, the change will mean little to Gmail’s millions of users. But it could help the company’s efforts to get the paid version of Google Apps adopted inside big companies, where Google is trying to compete with rival offerings from Microsoft and others. Corporate technology managers tend to shy away from beta products, and Google wants to remove any barriers to adoption that it can.

That makes me wonder whether the Beta tag had some other meaning for Google????

SAMSUNG LED TV...
Im truly impressed by the new Samsung LED TV.The picture quality really amazes you.Compared to the LCD,the LED is miles ahead.With its 170 degree viewing angle and mind boggling contrast ratio,this is truly the future of television.
Though the OLED hasnt been launched yet in India,it promises a lot.

Sony' OLED however launched worldwide seems to be the new show stopper. The stated contrast ratio for the new Sony OLED TV is 1,000,000:1 compared with the highest stated contrast for an LCD of 10,000:1. While both of these contrast figures are unrealistic for actual calibrated TV viewing, they are an indicator of just how superior OLED is in this category. Since there is no backlighting required for OLED TVs, it is easy to obtain deep black levels by limiting conductivity to the emissive organic compounds. This allows for deep rich black levels. Just as plasma technology the OLED display will use less power as less light is needed. White and bright colors will require the most power, thus to produce bright whites more current will flow through to the emissive organic compounds. LCD (liquid crystal diode) displays, by contrast, utilize electric charges to twist and untwist liquid crystals, which causes them to block light and, hence, emit blacks. The higher the voltage passing through the liquid crystals in a given pixel, the more fully those crystals untwist and effectively block light - all of which makes these pixels darker. As opposed to plasma, LCD TVs use the most power when displaying a very dark or black image. This is a difficult process, and despite recent improvements in LCD black levels, only the best LCD televisions (like those produced by Sharp and Sony) have managed to topple the 1000:1 contrast ratio barrier. Recent improvements have brought LCD displays up to the level of plasma. The one continual drawback here for LCD is off axis viewing, when black levels consistently drop.

THE OLED ADVANTAGE: OLED TV is clearly superior in this category. LCD TV manufacturers have made great improvements in black levels and in many cases have managed to match the contrast ratio of plasma displays. However, often even when black levels seem excellent on LCDs the dark matter detail suffers. We do not anticipate this problem with OLED, but it still remains to be seen.

TRY BING SEARCH...

The software giant Microsoft has fired a fresh salvo in its war with search giant Google. The company's revamped search engine called Bing aims to do to Google Search, what Google's Chrome aimed to do to Microsoft's Internet Explorer: weaken the dominance.

At stake for both the technology giants is the growing web advertising pie. Incidentally, this is not Microsoft's first attempt to thwart Google's Internet dominance. In the past too, the company has made many not-so-successful attempts to shake Google's Internet hegemony.

However, Bing shows promise feels analysts. The search engine traffic figures for the first few weeks too are positive. Here we present to you how the two stand vis-a-vis each other in features, appearance and many other counts.

Bing: Bing brings a colourful user interface for users. It has a side panel bar that displays search with related and history links relevant to users' search terms. The serach engine features a different background image everyday. The search engine comes with a set of related services, including Bing Travel, Cashback and Maps for Enterprise. Bing focuses on four key vertical areas: making a purchase decision (Shopping), planning a trip (Travel), researching a health condition (Health) or finding a local business (Local).

Google: Google for long sports a cleaner and simpler looks. The search engine displays stark white page with a search box. The upper left corner of Google home page links to other Google services including email, Maps, Orkut and images.

Bing: Some of the new features in Bing vis-a-vis Google include getting directions to locations with only one mouse click, and the ability to hover over a search result to see more information, without having to open a new link. The 'decision engine' promises to make things like buying a digital camera, booking a flight or searching for a restaurant easier by serving up results based on similar previous searches. Bing also has some other little-known but useful features of its old search engine. These include, smart motion preview, photos on the home page, Bing 411, Bing Mobile and Local Business Centre.

Google: Google recently introduced new features in its search engines to attract users, making Microsoft's task even harder. The Explore Google Search page displays 16 different Google search features including Movie Times, weather, dictionary, calculator, stock quotes to name a few.

Bing: Internet security experts warned that Bing gives users easy access to pornographic material. It is possible for anyone, of any age, to view explicit pornographic videos without even leaving the search engine. Bing has a "autoplay" tool that lets users preview videos simply by hovering a mouse over them. The tool may become a liability because users can have easy access to porn videos on Bing, and not have to log on to one of the porn websites.

However, recently Microsoft said that it has adjusted its search engine to make it easier to filter out porn. Also, the search engine doesn’t return any result on the keyword `sex' from India. However, if you tell the search engine that you’re from USA, or any one of the European countries (users can easily change country without even logging in), several links are returned.

Google: Google too seems quite porn-friendly as the search engine throws huge number of links for the keywords porn or sex. The search giant too displays pages from India.

Bing: Microsoft grabbed 12.1 per cent of US Internet searches for the week June 8-12, according to data released by industry tracker comScore. That is up from 11.3 per cent in the June 1-5 period -- the week in which Bing was launched -- and up from 9.1 per cent the week before that.

Google: In May, Google got solid 65 per cent of US searches. As for comparison, in May, Yahoo had 20.1 per cent and Microsoft had 8 per cent share.

Offline Gmail

Web-based email is great because you can check it from any computer, but there's one little catch: it's inherently limited by your internet connection. From public WiFi to smartphones equipped with 3G, from mobile broadband cards to fledgling in-flight wireless on airplanes, Internet access is becoming more and more ubiquitous -- but there are still times when you can't access your webmail because of an unreliable or unavailable connection.

Today we're starting to roll out an experimental feature in Gmail Labs that should help fill in those gaps: offline Gmail. So even if you're offline, you can open your web browser, go to gmail.com, and get to your mail just like you're used to.

Once you turn on this feature, Gmail uses Gears to download a local cache of your mail. As long as you're connected to the network, that cache is synchronized with Gmail's servers. When you lose your connection, Gmail automatically switches to offline mode, and uses the data stored on your computer's hard drive instead of the information sent across the network. You can read messages, star and label them, and do all of the things you're used to doing while reading your webmail online. Any messages you send while offline will be placed in your outbox and automatically sent the next time Gmail detects a connection. And if you're on an unreliable or slow connection (like when you're "borrowing" your neighbor's wireless), you can choose to use "flaky connection mode," which is somewhere in between: it uses the local cache as if you were disconnected, but still synchronizes your mail with the server in the background. Our goal is to provide nearly the same browser-based Gmail experience whether you're using the data cached on your computer or talking directly to the server.

iGoogle (formerly Google Personalized Homepage and Google IG), a service of Google, is a customizable AJAX-based startpage or personal web portal much like Netvibes, Pageflakes, My Yahoo!, MySurfPad and Windows Live Personalized Experience. It was originally launched in May 2005. Its features include the capability to add web feeds and Google Gadgets (similar to those available on Google Desktop).

iGoogle gadgets interact with the user and utilize the Google Gadgets API. Some gadgets developed for Google Desktop can also be used within iGoogle. The Google Gadgets API is public and allows anyone to develop a gadget for any need.

Google also allows all users to create a special gadget that does not require the use of the Gadgets API. The gadgets are designed to be shared with friends and family. The special gadgets must be created using an online wizard and must be of one of the following types:

"Framed Photo" – displays a series of photos.
"GoogleGram" – creation of special daily messages.
"Daily Me" – displays user's current mood and feelings.
"Free Form" – allows the user to input text and an image of their choice.
"YouTube Channel" – displays videos from a YouTube channel.
"Personal List" – allows the user to create a list of items.
"Countdown" – countdown timer.
In early 2009, iGoogle released a "chat" box at the side of the home page. It allows Gmail users to chat from their homepage without going to gmail.com

READ ALL ABOUT IT...

After our hectic journey we finally arrived at Bangalore and were welcomed with a heavy downpour.We were then led to our suites where we were put up along with other teams.After a long night testing our application and other finer details,it was D-Day the final stage of the Google Product Prodigy competetion.12 teams from the top colleges in India fighting it out.

On our arrival at Google office,we were thrilled to bits.Just the experience of being there was worth the journey.Once inside the campus what fascinates you the most is the work culture at Google.What the employees love they say is the food there.Be it the vast expanse of breakfast to start the day,the inumerable snacks available throughout the day(refrigerator packed with refreshments,stacks of chips,coffee shakes,burgers,puffs.......the list is endless)or the wonderful lunch ,you are only spoilt for choice.You can see its effect on the employees!!!And didnt I enjoy myself-you bet I did.

Besides all that,we had a lot of fun filled knowledge gaining seminars by some of the employees throughout the day.

After a good lunch,well it was time for the grand finale.We were excited and at the same time a bit nervous.But once everything started off ,we gained confidence and thankfully everthing went off well.Our application was well appreciated.

As a competitor,you are always anxiously awaiting the results.Well,at the fag end of the day with all the teams exhausted to say the least,it was time for the award distribution.We were nervous but confident of doing well.

After all the suspense,we were declared the 2nd Runer-Up.I can thank my stars for that!!
Credit however must be given to my teammate Rahul Sanghi who helped initiate the whole thing and all those who helped us develop our application 'Distress Call Management(DCM)'.

To wrap up the day and the competetion itself we were taken to the Bowling Alley to chill out and were later treated to a sumptuous dinner.

The Google adventure was indeed an important milestone in my life and the experience will never be forgotten.

Well with every reward comes even more effort,thats what ive learnt!!!
We were very excited after getting selected as finalists for the Google Product Prodigy 09,but developing our desired product required constant effort and the ability to innovate 24x7.
However after all that,we're finally done and are eagerly awaiting the final presentation at Google Bangalore on 20th April.
Hope our efforts pay off!!!!!!!
