To be completely honest, Twilight might not have been so bad if the cast were switched up a little.

I'm not entirely invested with most of the characters, so I'm generally fine with the choices. But Robert Pattinson as Edward is just.... D:

And then they had to cast Kristen Stewart as Bella. God, just kill me.

You can probably tell that I've been holding this mini-rant for a year now.

Back to the ranting. It's probably okay if they casted one of them but not the other, but to cast them both is just enormously stupid. Both of them have this sulky mopey mumbly thing going, which makes them both look like emo goth freaks in awkward love all the time. I personally thought Edward was more bright and jovial, more English gentlemanly in a way. Certainly not the slurring drunken mess that Robert Pattinson seems to think is so sexy.

And Bella just sounds like a petulant bitch I want to smack so hard. ARGH.

Now I'll be first to admit that Edward is possibly the hardest role to cast, and till now I can picture no one doing the role, but KRISTEN STEWART FOR BELLA?!

I mean, I would have totally been a fanboy for the Twilight movies if they'd casted Alexis Bledel. She is PERFECT for the role. Bella sounds like a more subdued Rory Gilmore.

And also, CARLISLE. I am so tired of looking at Carlisle! He looks like someone poured wax on him. I mean, Peter Facinelli looks fine normally, but in the movie he looks like plastic surgery gone very wrong. NOT THE FATHER FIGURE I EXPECTED.

Ok rant over. Back to reading Twilight.

My pick!: Top Jpop songs of 2009 (Favorites edition)

I won't lie - I'm the worst Jpop fan this year. Hence this year, this top whatever list is really really hard to compile. To compensate, I've decided to take out all the songs from my favorite artists so that you get better recommendations instead of a really biased list.

(Honestly though, it was because all the following 15 songs made it to my top 30 list, which made it look really lame. I like my lists professional, not just a favoritism game.)

My favorite artists if you didn't know by now are AAA (surprise surprise you haters, I still love them, get off my case already), Hirai Ken (I want to have his babies and drink his bathwater) and the "newcomer" Big Bang (TAEYANG TAEYANG TAEYANG). Hence this list has only songs from these artists. Next week's list will be the actual top Jpop songs list, without any of these artists.

I think I just confused myself.

Anyways, that is not to say these songs are not good, because they are. They're so good that they got into a list of their own. So go listen.

Number 15: AAA - HORIZON

It's a typical AAA feel-good song - memorable melody, uncomplicated vocals, bubbly and happy. Yet there's an element of strange to it that makes it different from other Jpop songs. Or other AAA songs that is. It kind of feels like a nice day out shopping with a few friends - just some lighthearted fun.

Number 14: Big Bang - My Heaven

Part of the reason why this song didn't rank higher is because it came out in Korean before, so it's not exactly the freshest of songs. And even when it came out in Korean, it took me quite a while to get used to it. It's a ballad for sure, but it is very different from the typical Jpop ballad. It's kind of like if you took a ballad and smashed it hard against a dance track and throw in some club beats just for the heck of it. The chorus is really really good though so the song as a whole came out pretty well. It's kind of hard to explain to just listen to it and you'd probably know what I mean.

Number 13: AAA - Wonderful Girls

This was what I wrote when I first reviewed this song:

One of the first impressions I got from this song is that it is very SMAP-esque. SMAP could have been singing this 5 or 6 years ago when they were younger. Relatively safe pop stuff. The kind that the audience claps along to somewhere in the middle of the concert.

And I stand by this still. Being safe is a good thing sometimes, this might be one of the sometimes.

Number 12: Big Bang - Emotion

Cool, chill music for those days when you don't want too much going on. It's strangely sexy to me - a song I can see myself having hot sex too. But that's just me.

Number 11: Big Bang - Follow Me

This song is incredibly catchy. The lyrics are simple and repeated constantly and when you add that to a strong beat you have a party pleaser. Shout along to it, dance the night away with it and you'd be better for it. Do not overuse it though, the repetitiveness of the song is a double-edged sword - it might get boring after a while.

Number 10: Saihuun (AAA) - Break Your name

This was the song that I thought would bring AAA back to being awesome. The preview was very well done, and the choreography was amazing. But it fell slightly short of that expectation in the end. It's still a very decent dance-pop track though, very similar to many other AAA dance tracks so AAA fans will definitely enjoy this one.

Number 9: Hirai Ken - Furusa Saiida

When you first hear this track, you will think I have gone out of my mind for putting this song in this list. But trust me, give it a few tries before judging it. I don't know what it is really, perhaps the bellydancing ethnic cracktasticness of it all is what makes it so epic to me. Curious yet? GO LISTEN. I can guarantee the chorus will be stuck in your head for a long time to come, whether you like it or not.

Number 8: AAA - Jamboree!!

BRIGHT AND HAPPY! YAY! And we all know AAA does happy well. They have freaking sparkles coming out of their asses or something. This is downright sugary pop so you can be assured that you'll feel happier after listening to this (or irritated greatly, if you're not into this kind of thing). It's one of the safer AAA songs to be honest, but it holds its own.

Number 7: AAA - Summer Revolution

The girl's one-third of the triple-A side triple A single (HAHA I am so funny) Break Down. I've been told it sounds like TRF but to me it sounds like GIRL NEXT DOOR done right. Very electronic stuff without too much vocoded vocals. Power pop if you may, this song has the girls in their element and is one of the best (if not the best) girls-only song AAA has ever come out with.

Number 6: Big Bang - Top of the World

Another strong Big Bang club-ish song, the oddly emotional chorus is what makes the song. And whoever sang "it's getting hot" made me very hot. Yum. Made up of mostly electronic beats and very little of anything else, Big Bang's vocals are surprisingly not altered too much so it's a good show of their vocal prowess as well. It's not overly upbeat or depressing so it's the perfect song to chill to without getting your mood down.

Number 5: Big Bang - Bringing You Love

Electronically altered voices and beats give this midtempo number a distinct Big Bang feel to it.

Number 4: Big Bang - Koe wo Kikasete

It's smooth, has lots of buildup to an epic chorus. It's the perfect winter song - sentimental, sad, ballady, emotional and all sorts of lovey-dovey things. It's bittersweet and like the perfect romance that wasn't meant to be. Go listen and feel like you're in love. With 5 impossibly good-looking guys.

Number 3: Big Bang - Ora Yeah!

I think I fell in love with this song right from the start - T.O.P's quirky rap paved the way for a really fun song. Usual Big Bang stuff to be expected - catchy beat, repetitive simple easy-to-follow lyrics, lots of spunk and attitude. Overall awesomeness.

Number 2: Hirai Ken - Boku wa Kimi ni Koi wo Suru

The meaning of this song is essentially "I will fall in love with you". Can you see why I love this yet?

This is such an epic song because it is so impossibly dramatic and sad - like all good Hirai Ken ballads are. The PV for this song had him shouting and singing from a mountaintop, that should give you an idea of how dramatic this song is.

But really, when it comes down to it, the song is simple and sweet and yet so heartbreakingly sad. It talks of a really selfless love so yeah, don't blame me for being such a mushy pile of goo when talking about this song.

Search for the translation of this song on Youtube. Then you will know what the hell I'm blabbering about.

Number 1: Big Bang - GARA GARA GO!!

I've yet to meet anyone who hates this song. You may not like it at first, but trust me, you WILL fall deeply in love with it. A little electronica, a little house, a little dance, a little techno, a little pop and out comes one very epic song. The beat is brisk and very rapid, perfect if you need some cheering up without having to resort to the ghey of bubblegum pop. Classic Big Bang shoutouts like "oh eh oh!" and "B-I-G to the BANG" adds so much fun to an otherwise very macho-sexy song.

I can't rave enough about this song, you'd just have to take my word for it and just go listen to this.

I'll mostly be reviewing English language movies, with the occasional Chinese/Korean/Japanese movie. So no, it's not another Japanese-media blog, it's a whole new thing.

The format of ROS will be kept as neat and minimal as possible, not too gimmicky. The synopses will be brief so as not to spoil the movie for readers yet give you a good enough idea on what the movie is about.

Basically what I set out to do with this blog is just give frank reviews from a very layman perspective. Many times, I read movie reviews only to not understand a single shit the entire thing was trying to say and I don't understand what warranted a good or bad review for the movie. With this blog, I'll try to make it feel like asking a friend about the movie. Although maybe that friend is a little bitchy at times.

"How was the movie?"
"Oh it kinda sucked but you know, the effects were cool and all and the lead actress was hot even though her boobs looked really fake in that one scene."

I've always believed that simpler terms get more meaning across.

There will be two regular sections in every review, which is the Verdict and the Worth Watching For. Verdict is my overall, one-line take on the movie. Worth Watching For are the parts or elements in the movie that I think makes the movie worth watching. It could be a huge reason, such as the best effects ever, or it could be something really small, like a tune which a character sings in a part of the movie.

Either way, I hope I can review movies such that it isn't daunting for my readers. I'm going to do reviews the right way.

Q4R #024: Questions I don't understand.

So I'm still around.

There's been a lot of shocking things that have happened in my life that have affected me somewhat (you would know if you followed me on Twitter) so please forgive me if I'm not inclined to blog as of late.

Anyways, from time to time, I receive strange questions that I really really don't understand. That makes me suspect that my readers are on crack. Which would explain why you guys read my blog.

So here are some questions that really make me go "WTF" but I'll still answer them anyways because I love you guys so. :D

feelings on cheese? ._.

What I don't get about this question is how it affects you after knowing my opinion on cheese. I mean, so what if I hate it? So what if I love it? So what if the stringy-ness of hot cheese reminds me of some other substance? So what if I want to take a piece of swiss cheese and stick my dick in it?

Which I don't by the way. *coughs*

So anyways, yes I love cheese. Cheese when added to virtually any western food instantly makes those food so so so much better. I hope you'll sleep better with that knowledge.

Well apparently, cheap dresses are a bigger consideration than voices. So yes why not. Misako steps back and lets Chiaki with the slightly better dresses sing and ruin the group even more with her really raw vocals. I'm sure that's going to help.

But now that I've heard more songs and watched more videos, I've decided that yes, I DO like them.

Anyways, I just woke up this morning and decided I wanted to cook myself some carbonara! I'd already bought the ingredients prior in another shopping trip with mom so all there was to do was to get off my lazy ass and cook it.

And if you're wondering, yes, this recipe is so easy that even a blind monkey could do it.

Make sure you read carefully all the way through before using this recipe. I left a lot of post-notes, with lessons learned.

The ingredients I used (to serve 2) are:

200g of streaky bacon and 5 hot dog franks, chopped up into huge chunks.

250g of linguine.

1 can of button mushrooms.

These that I got from the supermarket were pre-sliced, so it saves you tons of time! It said "pieces and stems" on the can so I suppose you just have to look out for that.

Around 50g of parmesan cheese.

4 eggs, with one yolk separated. You should use 6 eggs and separate 2 yolks if you're serving 2.

So here we go!

Step 1: Cook the linguine.

To a pot of boiling water, add some oil. The packaging for the linguine said it didn't require oil, which sounds strange to me so I added a tablespoon or two just in case.

Also, Nigella Lawson (who is the queen of cooking, so whatever she says must make sense somehow) said that you should add as much salt to the boiling pasta as there is salt in the Mediterranean sea. That probably means quite a lot of salt, so I dumped in two hearty tablespoonfuls of salt. You should only add this after the water comes to a bubbly boil and you've put in the linguine. This way you won't have to wait as long for the water to boil initially.

Step 2: Cook the bacon.

While that is cooking, cook the bacon in about 2 tablespoonfuls of oil. Make sure to let it cook through till the fat is dissolved slightly and the edges are a little brown.

Step 3: Add mushrooms and hot dog franks.

To that, you add the hot dogs and button mushrooms. These don't require much cooking so just let them sit in there and absorb some of that bacon juice.

I know carbonara is not supposed to have mushrooms nor hot dogs, but I like my food that way. You can skip these if you want.

And crap. Right now when I'm typing this post only do I realize that I forgot to take one photo. So anyways.

Step 4: Beat the eggs and mix in cheese.

JUST IMAGINE OKAY.

Beat the eggs (not the yolks that you've separated) and to that you add the parmesan cheese. Don't worry too much if the cheese doesn't melt, it'll do that later on in another step.

Step 5: Drain the cooked pasta.

Once the pasta is done, drain it! Pour about 1/3 to 1/2 a cup of starchy water (from the boiled pasta) to your egg/cheese mixture and give it a good stir. This will help make it more solid or something. You're supposed to cook the pasta till it's al dente, which I have no idea how soft it is. So just cook the pasta till however soft you'd like it (as you can see, mine is pretty hard because I like it that way) and you're good. Who needs to listen to those chefs anyways!

Step 6: Add pasta to cooking ingredients.

Throw the drained pasta into your pan of cooking ingredients and toss it around. To make sure the ingredients are not clumped in a corner you know? Common sense stuff.

Step 7: Add cooked pasta/ingredients to egg cheese mixture.

Once that is more or less done, pour the hot pasta and ingredients into a huge bowl with the egg and cheese mixture. Quickly stir it around to mix the sauce with the pasta well. The eggs might cook if you do this too slowly. See the white specks in the picture? They're the melting cheese. YUM.

Step 8: Add yolk to finished carbonara.

As the step says, add the yolk to the carbonara. Just in case you don't even know this, the yolk is supposed to sit in the center of the bowl/plate.

And there you have it! Carbonara!

Yes I know it looks good. Stop drooling. It tastes really decent too! For a first try at least. :D

Post-eating notes (VERY IMPORTANT SO YOU MUST READ.)

Step 1: Nigella Lawson lied. Or for carbonara at least. The bacon itself will already be salty enough so adding salt to your pasta will just make the whole thing really strong. Which is fine if you're me, but generally I'd advise against it. Just add a teaspoon or two of salt to get it going.

Step 2: Honestly, too much bacon. In fact, too much ingredients. To serve 2, you'd probably need 100g of bacon, 3 hot dog franks and half a can of button mushrooms. You could otherwise be generous and add 150g of bacon, then skip the hot dogs and mushrooms altogether.

Step 4: Parmesan, unlike mozzarella, does not do well if abused and overused. I'm guessing 40g of parmesan should be fine if you reduce the bacon.

And this is the heart-stopping part: 4 eggs is NOT enough for 2 people. Traditional carbonara would ask for cream, but that is just too tricky for me so instead, you might want to up the eggs to 6 and separate 2 yolks for topping later.

Step 5: Do not add that much starchy water to your mixture. LOL. Add about a quarter cup will do.

I really don't think anyone should take my advice when it comes to cooking, but if you really do try this out, let me know how it goes! Please don't sue me if you die of food poisoning or something. Oh and as you should have already figured out, this recipe is really unsuitable for children because of the non-fully-cooked eggs.

And then once I've given up on them, they release a single with decent sales (Break Down with 49k+ sold), Urata comes out with decent hair (finally), they released an Uchiwa at a-nation '09 (something I've ALWAYS wanted as an AAA good) and they release a calendar that is bright and colorful (which you guys should know by now that I LOVE) which has this page in it:

Also, AAA has miraculously managed to appear on an upcoming episode of Music Station, something I was convinced would never happen in my lifetime.

Ok so I've probably held off on giving my opinion on this for too long (though this is the "latest" issue of the lot).

I really don't understand Korean netizens. Firstly they give him loads of shit about an issue that is SO SO SO OLD.

Which is fine of course, if that's the way you want to play it. OF COURSE the guy would feel compelled to leave his group right?

So he fulfills their wishes in leaving the group (and heck, even leaving Korea) and then they go ballistic and say "nuuu we want you back".

Make up your fucking mind bitches.

Think about the whole situation from HIS point of view. If you said something horrible about the country you're currently residing in (and are insanely popular in) and the WHOLE COUNTRY knows about what you think of them, wouldn't you want to get away from it all as well?

I mean, how can one live life with weird looks every single day. Everyone's going to know what you once thought of them in the distant past. And even if they don't give it much thought, I think I would be real paranoid and start becoming overly cautious and wary of the people around me. Which is not a way to live at all.

Basically it means that Korea is a place where he would feel terrible in now.

Top 30 Jpop / Kpop songs 2009: Nominate!

We've finally entered the last quarter of the year and it's time to prepare for those end-of-year lists we bloggers like to do so much.

I did a top 30 Jpop songs list last year and I'm definitely hoping to get one up this year too. Of course, with my newfound Kpop fandom, there will be a top 30 Kpop songs list as well!

So here's where you guys come in. Honestly, I've not been paying as much attention as I'd like (and by that I mean constant refreshes at Jpopsuki for new stuff and stalking Oricon for new music) to Jpop and hence I have a feeling that I've missed out a TON of good stuff. So, I would like you guys to recommend me some music that you think I would like or that deserves to be on the list.

[Guidelines]

As always, I love cracktastic pop. If the song is insanely happy and cheery, then I'd be likely to love it.
Otherwise, it would be good if you could recommend me songs with a very strong melody line (the basic rule of thumb is if you can hum the song without sounding like a retard, then it's good).
Please only recommend songs that were releases in 2009 January onwards. I don't care if it was released in the last week of December and it charted all the way till March or whatever. If it's not released in 2009, it shouldn't be on this list.
Please only recommend Jpop songs. I don't need help with Kpop, and am not interested in all the other stuff.
Generally avoid recommending Jrock, because I don't really like it anyways. Milder stuff such as GLAY and L'Arc~en~ciel might be okay.
Please only recommend SONGS, not SINGLES or ALBUMS.
Please include the title of the song, followed by the singer of the song. If possible, do give me a Youtube link as well! :D
The song you've recommended might not get on the list, so please be understanding.
Please do not recommend me songs from: AAA, Hirai Ken, Koda Kumi, Hamasaki Ayumi, AKB48, Big Bang or Tegomasu. I've heard their stuff already. :D

As you can see, I'm answering all these questions REEEEALLY late, which I'm so sorry for. D:

But back on topic. My first impression of them were that they were uglier than your typical Kpop girl group. However, I still looked forward to their debut because G-Dragon was rumored to be the producer for their song "FIRE" or something like that.

BUT! The first time I saw their dress sense I went headtable headtable headtable repeatedly in a futile attempt to try and get rid of that colorful explosive diarrhea out of my head.

Yes you can go bang your heads against a hard surface now.

I don't really know them very well, so as I always do, I'd compare personalities with a group I'm more familiar with. In this case, I'm going to use Big Bang. Deal with it.

[Park Bom is Seungri]

Both of them seem like attention whores for some reason, and most of the time I see them they're acting cute in one way or another. Also, it seems that both of them sounds stuffy-nosed when they sing live.

[Minzy is Daesung]

Constantly made fun of for her "countryside" looks, she's like a more subdued version of Daesung. Maybe it'll take a variety show or two to get her to loosen up a bit.

Oh, and both of them sing well too. Maybe it the kind of face that projects the kind of voice.

[Dara is Taeyang]

She's constantly SO polite and she looks the best amongst the 2NE1 girls, so I guess that makes her Taeyang. She's also always politically correct, another trait of Taeyang's. *shrugs* She's also easily my favorite member, although this is based on a purely superficial basis.

[CL is .... G-Dragon?]

I have no idea. G-Dragon is definitely more crazy than she is. But both of them are the leaders of their groups, so... it sort of links?

He's honestly hit-or-miss for me. Generally he gets something right, then screws up something else. Let's take a few examples...

See, in the first picture he generally looks okay except for the weird eyeliner and dead rat on his head. I think the top/scarf would work with some other hat.

But then he goes change into the mess of a T-shirt. Now don't get me wrong, the mess is not with the 'FUCK YOU' and '69' and 'I ♥ SEX', the mess is actually with the leopard print AND how faded it looks.

Like, how old is this T-shirt anyways?

I honestly like the jumpsuit and all the crazy accessories, it looks really fun and bright and all, but we would all agree he looks like a mad scientist in this photo.

The problem really lies with the hair (it's not a bad style, but it simply does not go well with this outfit) and the fact that he wore a shirt-and-tie. If you switch those out for something else, it'd probably look better. And less crazy-chemical-fetishist.

And see, he CAN look good. All white ensemble and big watch and all that, it's really fresh and airy, which makes him looks like the young guy he is. Admittedly this is one of his older photos, but still.

Comments on GD's new look? It looks as if the inspiration came from Death Note.

Firstly, he's honestly one of the VERY few Asians who can carry off platinum blonde without looking like a total douchebag. It's probably because of his very androgynous features and fair skin. *shrugs*

I like the hair, that's for sure.

OMG. GD'S HEARTBREAKER IS SOME SEXY SHIT! Y/Y?
Hey Raid, G-dragon from Big Bang's solo album was leaked! Have you given it a listen yet? What do you think?

Sigh, ok I guess I have to do another review again, but a much shorter version. Let's do it my normal way: good, bad and so-so.

[Good songs]

"A boy" has a very interesting melody, but the pitch makes you cringe at times (especially during the bridge). You'll get used to it after a few listens though. A not-too-showy start to a very showy album.

"Heartbreaker" is a thumping club/dance/pop track that's bound to make you want move your body a little. Some people might get turned off by the autotune (or whatever you call that thing that makes his voice synth-y) but I personally think it's a very good tool to hide the flaws in his voice. G-Dragon is not a strong singer per se, but with this vocoder (am I using the wrong word again?) thing, it makes his voice phenomenal.

"Breathe" continues in the same vein as "Heartbreaker", except it's slightly less upbeat. Think of it like this: "Heartbreaker" is when you're in the club, and "Breathe" is the after-club sex that you have.

The lyrics are mightily suggestive too - "I know you want it baby... You and me hardcore, let's do it some more... Till you say no more... I can't breathe".

Don't you love it already?

"Gossip Man", like many of the other good songs on the album, has a very distinct beat that you can follow easily. It also has a rather decent chorus with a strong melody. I didn't much fancy the veteran singer featured in this song, but I can't complain much I guess. It's really not good enough to be a good song, but it's much better than just so-so, so I had to put it here.

"Korean Dream" is my favorite track on the album, and I swear it's not because of Taeyang's involvement in this song. The song with it's catchy as heck tune and shoutable lyrics ("Eh oh eh oh!" and "One two step and Turn left to the right below shut Ladies (yeah) and gentlemen (huh)") makes it a great party track. There's so much fun to be had with this song, and you'll know why when you take a listen to it.

[So-so]

"Hello" is mainly Dara (from 2NE1) singing, with G-Dragon rapping. Therefore, the whole song is made up mostly of rapping with Dara singing minimally (sad really). It's not exactly a catchy song, and kind of feels like a filler song. Dara doesn't sing enough for this to be a romantic duet or something either, unless this duet is of a narcissistic male and his really unimportant girlfriend. While it's not a bad song, it just doesn't stand out enough for me to care too much about it.

"The Leaders" is really just hip-hop and rapping, which is not really my thing. The opening with the "wassup, wassup, wassup wassup wassup" held so much potential to make this a fun song, but it eventually fell flat. There were some cute parts ("Gee gee gee gee Baby baby baby, GD GD Bang it Bang it Bang it") but those just weren't enough to make this song epic.

Besides, CL rapping "the one and only best female" makes me roll my eyes.

[Bad songs]

"Butterfly" is a weaker number because G-Dragon is trying for forlorn and sad or something equally rubbishy in this song. G-Dragon can do angsty, emo, angry and happy, but not sad and sentimental. It just turns out cheesy and all I want to do is ask him to just shut up and stop whining already.

And besides, he's required to sing without the help of any effects shielding his voice. The music is also very minimalistic, which exhibits his flaws for all to see.

"She's Gone" is... well. I guess the fact that I don't even remember how the song is like is testament to what I think of it. It's just basically macho screamy stuff which would be great for those angry days. Other than that, it's just really... testosterone-overloaded noise. How inspiring.

"1 year station" is a neither here nor there song. It's trying to be upbeat, yet has a mid-tempo melody, yet has mad rapid rapping scattered here and there and basically it just sounds a little messy to me. The singing doesn't help much either, he sounds gay in here. Or constipated. Or both.

Oh oh, and if you're asking about the music video for "Heartbreaker", then yes it's fucking sexy. It propelled him from "strange eccentric friend" to "fuckable" in my list. A major improvement I would say. Go watch it if you haven't already.

I'm always slightly hesitant to comment on plagiarism issues because, let's face it, is anything even original these days? Everything is inspired by something else, and with so much music in the market these days, is it any wonder that two songs happen to sound the same?

But anyways, he might have, he might not have. I really don't care. All I care is whether the song is nice (it is) and whether the music video is nice (also is). Why should I have to care so much as to who owns the song anyways? So that I know who exactly deserves to get my money when I buy the album? Whatever for, sheesh.
