Installing Picasa 3.0 in Ubuntu 10.04

Picasa is free photo software from Google. Google had announced the latest version of Picasa 3 to Linux distributions too. As i switched from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 10.04, i feel difficult to organise the pictures and my albums in order,because in Windows 7 i'm greatly fond of using Picasa 3.

Its easiness to integrate with Picasa Web albums are the key features that i admire every time. You can sync your Picasa 3 and Web Albums edits, change your online album settings from Picasa, and delete online albums from Picasa.

Following steps gives you how to install Picasa 3 to Ubuntu :

Remove the existing version of Picasa. Run the following commands,

sudo apt-get remove picasa

Install Picasa 3.0 in Ubuntu:

Import the google key using the following command

wget -q -O – https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add -

$ sudo apt-get update

Then Edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file,

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

After that add the following line to the file,

# Google testing repository

deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ testing non-free

Save and Exit the file.

Update the source list file using the following command

$ sudo apt-get update

Install picasa using the following command:

sudo apt-get install picasa

After successfully installed, run the picasa3.0 from Applications->Graphics->Picasa. So just start sharing and adding your albums organized and keep updated over internet..

Installing TweetDeck on Ubuntu 10.04

Iam really impressed about the new Ubuntu 10.04. Installing Ubuntu Linux in my HP nx7300 laptop was a really thrilling challenge for me. I did it by myself and im using Ubuntu for my developing purposes (esp Rails).

As im active in Twitter and i used TweetDeck in Windows 7, i was struggling to find an application that work same like as TweetDeck.. With little bit googling i find a perfect solution to install TweetDeck to Ubuntu Linux. So im prefering to share with my readers through my blog.

Follow the steps to Install Adobe Air and TweetDeck in your Ubuntu Linux.
Installing Adobe Air On Ubuntu

1.Download the latest version of Adobe Air for Linux from the url given below:
Get Adobe Air.
2.After Downloading place the file named AdobeAIRinstaller.bin in a any newly created folder by you.
3. Right click on the file AdobeAIRinstaller.bin and select properties, now click the permissions tab and check the box which says Allow executing file as program.
4.Copy the file adobeair_linux_al_033108.bin in home folder in ubuntu.

5. now, open terminal and type the following command

chmod +x adobeair_linux_a1_033108.bin

Type this command now to run it to get installed

sudo ./adobeair_linux_a1_033108.bin

This will install adobe air on your Ubuntu Linux, now you can download any adobe air applications including tweetdeck.

Installing TweetDeck On Ubuntu

After Installation of Adobe Air, downlaod tweetdeck from the url below, double click to install it

Download latest Version of tweetdeck from http://tweetdeck.com

Setting up Rails Environment on Windows Vista/XP

Couple months back when I just started programming on Ruby on Rails, I faced so many problems regarding the configuration and all, in my developing machine Vista. I searched so many resources online but didn’t find a suitable one. Now I managed to resolve that problem. So, I would like to share the knowledge to you on how to setup Rails on Windows platform, using Ruby gems, Rails, Mongrel, and MySQL as a part of the stack. I am using windows Vista for my development process, but all the instructions will work in the Windows Xp

too.

1. Installing Ruby: Download and install the latest version of Ruby Installer (currently 1.8.6-27 RC2) from the rubyforge.org website: One-Click Ruby Installer. Leave all the default settings during installations as such. Its important that you install in the ruby path without any spaces in it. (Like C:/Ruby by default).

After the installation go to the command prompt in the system (Start –> Accessories -> Command Prompt), and type the following command:

C:\Users\Mikx>ruby -v

You will find this line of details

ruby 1.8.6 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 287) [i386-mswin32]

2. Updating Ruby Gems: The above installer also install Gems package via the one-click Installation process. May be the Gem installed will be outdate, so in order to avoid such errors, we should update the Gem package. To do so enter the following commands in the command-line:

C:\ Users\Mikx> gem update ––system

C:\Users\Mikx>gem -v 1.3.3

3. Installing Rails: Now its the time to install Rails package. Run the following commands to install Rails package as Ruby Gems.

C:\> gem install rails C:\Users\Mikx> rails -v Rails 2.3.2

In future if you want to upgrade the Rails Gem, just simply run the following commands

C:\Users\Mikx> gem update rails

The basic Rails environment is now installed on your system, and you can skip the following part if you are happy with WEBrick as the web server, SQLite as the database server.
The remaining part of the post covers an alternate Web Server called Mongrel, and MySQL Database.

4. Installing Mongrel: Another most recommended Web Server for Rails development and also for production Server is Mongrel . To install Mongrel Web Server, run the following commands:

C:\Users\Mikx> gem install mongrel

C:\Users\Mikx> gem list mongrel *** LOCAL GEMS *** mongrel (1.1.5)

After installing Mongrel, Rails automatically starts the Mongrel instead of WEBrick web server when you run the Rails applications in development mode.

Download and install the MySQL 5.1 database server. You can safely accept all the default settings of the installation wizard. After MySQL database server is installed, you need to run its configuration wizard to configure the MySQL installation.

One important step during the configuration process is to select a root password(you will need to enter it in the database.yml configuration file of your Rails application).
Now download and install the MySQL GUI tools.

Installing Ruby On Rails on Debian/Ubuntu

After some experience in developing RubyOnRails applications in windows, i came to know that the best environment for rails development is Linux. So i choose to have the Debian version Ubuntu 10.04.

Today i'm going to show you guys how to install Ruby on Rails in Ubuntu 10.04. This can be applied to lower versions also.

Get Ruby

$ sudo apt-get install ruby-full build-essential

Note that ruby-full will install emacs and a slew of other non-essential packages.

You can install all the necessary packages with this command:

$ sudo aptitude install ruby build-essential libopenssl-ruby ruby1.8-dev

To test the installation, type this command in console:

$ ruby -v

It will show up something like this:

ruby 1.8.7 (2010-01-10 patchlevel 249) [i486-linux]

Install RubyGems

To install the Ruby Gems type the following commands in Termainal

$ sudo apt-get install rubygems

Install Rails

Type the following commands...

$ sudo gem install rails

TO check the installation type

rails -v

It will give the installed version number.

Rails 2.3.5.

Install MySQL DB server (optional)

By default, Rails includes the sqlite3 gem and is automatically configured to use it. To use MySQL instead, follow the following steps:

$ sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client
$ sudo apt-get install libmysql-ruby libmysqlclient-dev
$ sudo gem install mysql

Test your Rails installation

To test your Rails installation, generate a new Rails project:

$ rails myrailsapp

If you are using MySQL, use the following command:

$ rails myrailsapp -d mysql
