A trip to his ancestral home of Nicaragua inspired him to explore the traditions of South American music: Peru, Columbia and Argentina, but filtered through a post-modern sensibility so that Cumbia rubs up against hip-hop and ska. "La Verdad" is the stand-out track, but there is a consistent brilliance to much of it. I sense the impact of Sting & The Police was huge on Latin America. That pop-reggae sound is different from say Toots & the Maytals' speedy style, but is lighter than the Wailers. "What am I doing?" adds swelling Memphis horns to the opening reggae groove, then at mid-point kicks it up to double-time for a ska rave with trombone. It's a short album, half an hour long, with two bonus tracks that are a second take of "Asuncion," and an unplugged version of "What am I doing?"

Here's the link: http://www.muzikifan.com/

News and Ramblings...

<creativeCommons:license>http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/</creativeCommons:license>

Marcelo E. This third release from Cuchata brings a fresh new sound and a new path for the band founder Marcelo E. Quinonez. Cuchata's new album "Amor, Cambio, Y La Verdad drops July 6th 2010 on ITunes, Emusic and Amazon"

Cuchata’s original compositions can rarely be classified into one genre. Integrating Afro-Latin traditions with modern elements of Rock, Hip-Hop, Dub, Ska and Afro-Beat, to create the hybridized sound that Cuchata is known for. The inspiration for Cuchata came from a pilgrimage to Marcelo E. Quinonez’s ancestral home of Nicaragua in 1999. Mesmerized by the musical heritage of the country, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Marcelo formed the band Cuchata. The first release “Cuchata” churns together influences spanning the Latin American diasporas. Taking hints from the musical traditions of Nicaragua, Peru, Cuba, Columbia, and Argentina and fluidly mixing them into one cohesive sound. After several years of travel, and exposure to more cultures Marcelo became disenchanted with the idea of a single culture, and began to embrace multiple cultures for their unique musical influences. Cuchata’s second album “Sangre Mixto”, showed the diversity of the band’s style, and Marcelo’s talent in creating a unique musical flow. It was a departure from the acoustic trio sound of the first release, introducing electric guitar and brass as well as experimenting with English lyrics. “Sangre Mixto” is gracefully put together and serves as a perfect example of how a band can both fit into a genre and at the same time challenge it. Cuchata’s music has been licensed for commercials, television shows, and feature films. Leading to Marcelo taking on new challenges and actively pursuing a career in film and television music as well as lending his talents to produce new artists. Early successes down this path included scoring an award winning short films such as “Saddam 17” and “Help Wanted”.

With Cuchata’s newest release entitled “Amor, Cambio, Y La Verdad” we see Marcelo’s composing and writing talents focused and stripped down. “This album is more of me than any of my past musical compositions have been. It deals with concepts I had never really expressed before, and that are deeply personal. This album is about love and growth,” says Marcelo. The track “La Verdad” explores the truth of love, and how it’s the one thing that matters always. While the tracks “What am I doing” and “Losing it all” showcases not only a smooth departure from the “Latin” genre, but Marcelo’s seamless ability to jump from Cumbia, to Ska, to Hip-Hop. Pouring his heart and soul into this release Marcelo plays the majority of the instruments on each track, writing and performing parts for bass, guitar, keys and vocals. He’s also invited many talented guests to help in creating this new and trans-formative sound. “The truth of the matter is that I am a hybrid. I myself am a product of many cultures and influences. To deny any aspect of that would be to deny a part of who I am. I swore to honor all my parts in this album, regardless of people’s expectations.”
With this album, Marcelo has elevated Cuchata to genre bending status and made a record that will speak to people universally about the themes of life and love that captivate us all, regardless of language, culture or tradition.

Band Website: http://www.cuchata.com

News and Ramblings...

<creativeCommons:license>http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/</creativeCommons:license>

Marcelo E. It will be fun and memorable, both are good things!

2) Want to hear and download some tracks off the forthcoming Cuchata disk "Amor, Cambio, Y La Verdad"
Listen/Download the first track off the album here: Ritual http://soundcloud.com/elegguaproductions/01-ritual-cuchata-2010
Listen to track five off the album here: http://soundcloud.com/elegguaproductions/05-la-verdad

Did we mention it was free?

We are shooting for a June release, so stay tuned for updates

3) Have you seen the new Cuchata site? If not go there now and bask in the glory. We like to think of it really as a Cuchata portal. Here is where the portal exists: http://www.cuchata.com

4)OK Peeps want to hear Cuchata on the small screen and large screen? OK well if you happen to be in Los Angeles in May you can check out the film Mercy on May 3rd at The Egyptian Theatre! Here is the info: http://genart.org/screeningseries/los-angeles-premiere-mercy#

Also look for some Cuchata tracks on MTV TR3's The Yearbook Chronicles. They used a bunch of Cuchata music in this series and we're very proud: Check it out here:http://www.mtvtr3s.com/ontv/dyn/yearbook_chronicles/series.jhtml

5) Where can you find yourself a huge heaping dose of Cuchata on the interwebs (I know it's a played out term, but I like the sound of it)? Here:

http://www.twitter.com/cuchata
http://www.myspace.com/cuchata
http://www.reverbnation.com/cuchata
http://www.cuchata.bandcamp.com (you can stream the whole Cuchata library there!)
http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/group.php?gid=289604485531&ref=search&sid=526981259.1680771886..1

OK adios for now

Respeto y Amor!!!
News and Ramblings...

<creativeCommons:license>http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/</creativeCommons:license>

Marcelo E. (To be released at our 3/13 and 3/18 events.)

Because you can’t listen to Cuchata without wanting to know more about them, we’re bringing you an exclusive interview with Cuchata frontman Marcelo Quiñonez. Thanks, Marcelo!

1) Finish this sentence: Without my coffee, I wouldn’t be able to… function normally. Though I do occasionally go without for short periods of time, which is never fun. By the way Liga Masiva coffee is freaking amazing! That’s coming from a very well seasoned coffee person. I did spend 10 years living in Seattle, and I actually owned my own coffee house in San Luis Obispo California, so I know a thing or two about coffee…Great stuff from you guys!

2) Other than Cuchata, what music do you listen to during an afternoon coffee break? I’m listening to the new album by Nneka right now and I listen to a lot of Hip-Hop as well. Coffee break favorites include: Fela Kuti, any sort of Cumbia or Chicha music (Psychedelic Cumbias from the Amazon), Kings of Leon too!

3) How does your Nicaraguan heritage/ancestry come out in your music? I think it plays a strong role in my lyrical subject matter. Nicaragua is a very political place, we talk politics a lot around the dinner table, during work, etc… I tend to be motivated lyrically by politics, not just governmental politics but philosophical and emotional politics as well. You’ll find a lot of traditional Nicaraguan music whose entire subject matter revolves around expressing political ideology… that has influenced me the most I would say.

I’m also very inspired by native and aboriginal philosophy and the perspective of indigenous peoples from around the world. You will find references to indigenous myths and ideology in a lot of my songs.

4) Item you can’t live without: My guitar!

5) Where can people find Cuchata online and in the world? Well you can always go to the official Cuchata site, or our myspace site. We’ve got hard-core hip-hop heads, classic music connoisseurs, Bachata mamis, and even your odd Dave Mathews fan.

Our partnership with band Cuchata and musical visionary Marcelo Quiñonez, though, may just satisfy everyone.

Why? Because Cuchata’s original compositions can rarely be classified into one genre. This danceable but conscious music integrates Afro- Latin traditions with modern elements of Rock, Hip-Hop, Dub, Ska and Afro-Beat, to create the hybridized sound that Cuchata is known for.

Cuchata is teaming up with Liga Masiva on the videos that we’re releasing to the world on March 13 and March 18 and which will be available online after that. We’re proud and honored to merge some of their songs with the powerful imagery and words of Liga Masiva farmers, roaster, and coffee-drinkers.

Stay tuned tomorrow for an exclusive interview with Cuchata frontman Marcelo Quiñonez on coffee, politics, and the one item he can’t live without.

¡Pa’lante Cuchata!

News and Ramblings...

<creativeCommons:license>http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/</creativeCommons:license>

Marcelo E. Well it's very close to being done finally! We are just waiting on some final tweaks of the artwork and we will send out to be manufactured and to Itunes, Amazon, etc....

I'm very excited about this album as it has been a very personal and intimate process for me. This is the first Cuchata album where I play the majority of the instruments, and this album I have brought in a whole new group of musicians to help out. I will be posting more updates shortly, like official release date and such. It should be done and release at the end of April. Stay tuned here for some more sneak peeks at the album as well as some free download codes as well!
Supergracias Gente!!!
News and Ramblings...

<creativeCommons:license>http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/</creativeCommons:license>

1 more reason why I no longer participate in religion

I woke up today and read the news as I always do. Not sure why I torture myself with the news, but I do and I'm OK with it. This morning I came across this story:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/mar/04/vatican-gay-sex-scandal

This story didn't really surprise me, but it did make me think about something.

Why would anyone believe in this organization?

I asked myself this question numerous times and asked my friends and family, and no one had an answer? Even when I asked Catholics about this (most of which didn't even know the story existed) they had no answer. One answered this way "I pray to God not the Vatican". To which I asked "so why call yourself a Catholic then?". I got no answer to that. It just makes me think how many of us here on this planet blindly believe what we are told simply because we fear the consequences of questioning the norm or the status quot. Is that really anyway to live and experience life?
Not for me!
News and Ramblings...

<creativeCommons:license>http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/</creativeCommons:license>

Marcelo E.
