3 Fun Things to do Today on Google

Like me if you are a frequent google user you must have seen that now google is doing some interesting and fun things regularly. We see new “Google Doodles” (those interesting images and graphics that appears on google homepage in place of normal google logo) more often. Some other fun stuff is also there that is not so obvious.

Here go try these 3 interesting things I guess you will enjoy:

1. Let it Snow:

Go to google and search for the phrase “Let it snow” you will see some interesting thing happening on the screen. Snow will start to fall from the screen top and after a few seconds frost will appear on your screen that covers the whole screen. You can wipe the frost with your cursor. Or you can click on the defrost button to clear it all at once.

2. Hanukkah:

Google is celebrating hanukkah this festive season. If you search for the term “Hanukkah” you will see a band of star appear below the search bar. I know this is not that interesting but still its something google is trying to spread joy of festive season.

3. Google Gravity:

Google gravity is a special experiment that is really interesting to see and I am confident that you are going to enjoy it very much.

Go to Google.com and type “Google gravity” in the search box and hit “I’m Feeling lucky” button. If you are using google instant like me then after searching go to the first search result. You will see the power of earth’s gravity and the falling sky

Last thing you should to do is to hit the facebook Like button in the floating bar in the side so your friends can enjoy this too

Youtube Video Publishing

I was seeing a lot of bloggers are making youtube videos to promote their blogs and websites. I thought of doing the same and made my first youtube video.

I used windows movie maker to make this video. You can downlowd it from windows live. This tool comes for free and it comes with functions to make basic video with pictures, other videos and music files. You can not use much of imagination while using windows movie maker. With windows movie maker you can publish your videos directly to youtube, facebook and some other sites. Download windows movie maker here.

Update: I have found this great service animoto lot easier to use and with lots of bells and whistles. I definitely suggest you make videos with animoto rather then windows movie maker. Animoto’s lite version that is free, Plus version costs 5$ per month or 30$ per year and a Pro version costs 39$ per month and 249$ per month. Sign up for lite version now and look if you need more functions or not.

How to Make your Windows Boot Faster

Its really frustrating if it takes a long time for our computer to boot.

When you install windows first it starts in no time but later it slows up with usage.

Why?

Its because of the applications and program we install during our usage. These applications and services also start during windows startup and the extra time these programs takes also add up in the windows startup time. If you can trim the list of programs and services then you windows will start faster.

Now the good news!

There is one software that has made it too easy to tune your computer boot faster. This software is easy to use and you are not required to know a lot of technical tricks. I used this software and decreased my windows boot time from 2.15 min to 1.00 min. This program is known as Soluto. You can know more about it on its website www.soluto.com and download it for free.

After you install Soluto it will make a list of programs that are starting during the boot and sort them under following 3 types:

1. No Brainer: These programs are usually not required at startup and should remove them.

2. Potentially removable: These programs can be removed provided you know what these programs do and you need them or not.

3. Required: These programs are essential for windows. I suggest do not touch them.

You will have following options for these programs:

1. Pause: If you choose this option the program you have selected will be removed from windows startup.

2. Delay: This option will not remove the application but will make it start after the windows boot has completed and your computer is idle.

When you hover your mouse over the application it will show the time in seconds the program takes while startup.

After you have made the required changes you can restart your computer and observe the faster boot time.

History of Mobile OS

This time I got this question about Android Os. So here is what I explained.

As we use windows operating system(OS) on our PCs, mobile phone works on various OS. This OS thing is the big difference between Smartphones(Nokia N73) and feature phone(Nokia 3315).

Symbian foundation developed Symbian OS for mobile phone and this was the fist advanced OS for mobile phones. Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and other manufacturer used it on their phones. You may have used it on Nokia 6600, 6630, N70, N72, N73, N95-98, E series etc.. etc..

Apple launched first version of iPhone in January 2007. It was way ahead of Symbian and other OS present at that time. This phone made every other OS look like a decade old in front of it. Any manufacturer had nothing to show to public in comparison to Apple’s iOS. iOS evolved through different versions and latest is iOS 4.0. Actually its first time it is called as iOS. We were calling it iPhone Os until now.

Now here came Google’s Android to rescue

In Nov 2007 Google announced Android OS for mobile phones. It was just the piece of technology that was able to challenge iOS. The mind blowing thing with this OS was that this OS is free to use(open source) by anyone that can make hardware to support this OS.

In Feb 2009 came first phone carrying Android OS 1.1 from American telecom company T-mobile called T-mobile G-1.

Than came android 1.5( codename cupcake)

1.6 (Donut) This version currently powers my Samsung Galaxy.

2.0/2.1(Eclair)

2.2(froyo)-this one latest in production phones

Future release will be called “Gingerbread” and then next one will be “Honeycomb”.

Every big manufacturer Like Samsung, Motorola, HTC, Sony Ericsson , Dell, and many more jumped into the bandwagon and started making Android phones. You must have seen the latest Samsung Galaxy S phone’s ads in TV, yes that’s an android phone.

In between all these new technology advances Nokia took one ridiculous step and purchased Symbian OS in 2008 and made it open source. No one other than Nokia wanted to use it now.

The latest Nokia phone N8 will be carrying Symbian’s latest version that they call Symbian^3. Every Technology Guru has declared N8 as Hardware masterpiece but Software failure. It just cant stand in front of iOS or Android for a sec.

Now Nokia themselves have realized their mistake and have started investing in a new OS called MeeGo along with Intel for their upcoming phones. Nokia knows its in trouble because of Symbian.

The best part about android and iPhone is that every Android phone comes with an inbuilt android marketplace and iPhone with iTunes. Android market place has close to 100,000 Application and games that you can download and install directly on your phone with few click of button( oops..few taps on the screen) and iOS has around 3 times more apps and games. 80% of these apps are free to download and use.

Other big player in market is Research In Motion(RIM). RIM is manufacturer of Blackberry phones. They are making these phones rich in communication abilities since 1996. They are also struggling to combat iOS and Android. They recently announced new version blackberry OS 6.0.

Palm pre is another player but they have not been able to make their place in this mobile OS war. Recently they have been acquired by HP.

Windows phones have been around for a long time but they were not able to attract much of traction as they were considered buisness phones but they were not good as Blackberry for business purpose. They have recently announced Windows mobile 7.

Samsung released Bada operating system and Samsung wave mobile with this OS. I don’t think no one knows about this OS other that samsung itself. Do you wanna know?

Faster Server

Many of you sent me email as this blog was down for couple of days. This was because I was using shared hosting and the large amount of visitor this blog and my other blogs and forum were attracting was far more than the shared server can handle so the server came down.

As soon as the loyal readers of this and my other blogs started complaining about the slow loading speed or complete stoppage of services I worked quickly and moved this blog to a VPS ( Virtual Private Server).

Selecting a nice server provider requires doing some deep studies or you can end up purchasing a server that can lead to more headache. Doing the study took few more hours but we are Up and Running again and you can also see the huge improvement in the page loading speed.

You may want to know what server provider I am using now. This blog is on ServInt.com VPS.

As I was doing the study I stressed a lot on the the quality of support the server provider is offering and I noticed all of the users of Servint gave them thumbs up. After purchasing the server I have few email conversation with support and I always got their replies within minutes of creating a ticked. Looks good till now.

Who signed up on facebook because of you

For a long period I have been on facebook and I have forgotten how I first reached facebook. I dont remember who invited me to facebook or I myself typed the web address.

Like me most of you might also have forgotten but now facebook has started giving some detail description about the invites.

If you would like to know who all have joined Facebook because of you, go here.
If you would like to see a list of all people whom you have invited to join Facebook but they are yet to accept your invitation, go here.
If you like to know who in your friends circle has brought the maximum number of people to Facebook so far, go to facebook.com/impact.

You can also send invites to friends to whom you have previously invited but the invitation was not accepted or stayed unnoticed.

Which Web Browser you use?

Most of the people use a single web browser for their all online activities but as a webmaster I need to check my websites in all the major browsers available for compatibility testing. Not just for compatibility testing these browser also help in some way or other so I can work more efficiently.

At present I have following browsers:

In these I like Google Chrome the most because it is much faster than other browsers. I don’t have to wait for it to start as it starts in a flash and also page rendering is speed is also far better than other browsers.

I use Mozilla Firefox as my second browser to browse my second google account and also because it has so much cool plugins that helps a lot.

Third Browser I use is Apple safari as it is most used browser on Mac computers and it cannot be overlooked.

Opera Browser is other browser I use because it sync with opera mini browser that I use on my mobile phone. If I find any site that I feel useful when browsing the web on my mobile phone then I bookmark it to see it later on my laptop.

Microsoft Internet explorer is rarely used by me as I don’t like it at all.

Flock Browser is for my social networking needs. It is a special browser built to manage all social networks you use with lesser work.

Other browsers are just for testing purpose.

I wrote about making a to do list. I use google notepad to take notes whenever I am online but when I was offline I was using my nokia phone to make to do entries as it has a nice built in To do application but the problem with making to do entries in mobile phone is that I just forget about these entries because I am too much habitual of taking mobile everywhere and it doesn’t triggers any thought as I am trying to do something new.

So I decided to do it the old fashioned way by keeping a small pocked diary with me all the time and taking notes whenever I get some new idea. As the diary is new it provokes the feeling of doing new thing and its human nature that we are too much interested in new things.

Lets see how it turns out to be.
