From my humble experience as a web developer here are 20 tips that can help to build clean XHTML markup:

1. Use the right doctype

Doctypes should be the very first thing you write in an XHTML Document which instructs the browser how to render the following document correctly.

2. Create your XHTML page structure first then add CSS

It's common practice to start writing both HTML & CSS at the very start. Writing only the page layout markup first then positioning, floating those blocks with CSS has considerably decreased my time markup writing time.

3. Always close your tags

Not closing tags leaves the browser to do so, and your final page may cause strange inconsistencies across browsers.

4. Keep tag names lowercase

HTML is cas insensitive but XHTML recommends to use lowercase for both tags and attributes and all attributes should be quoted (alt="test")

5. Use a reset to eliminate browser inconsistencies such as padding & margin

Browsers have their own default margin and padding for some tags like p, ul, body. Always reset these default margin and padding to avoid inconsistencies across browsers.

6. Never use inline styles

XHTML markup should be kept as simple and minimal as possible and free from any CSS styles.

7. Combine elements h1, h2, h3 {font-family: tahoma, color: #333}

Combining elements makes your CSS rules simple and cleaner.

8. Use shorthand (font instead of font-family & font-size)

Use shorthand properties to instruct more than one rule in a single line.

9. Don’t tag qualify unnecessarily (ul#header)

id is already unique and tag qualifying here is unnecessary.

10. Comment your CSS (/*** BEGIN HEADER ***/ & /*** END HEADER ***/

Break your CSS into logical blocks through comments.

11. Don’t overdo on descendant selectors (html body a {color#000;} is unnecessary)

Descendant selectors further helps to reduce markup, but are very expensive and should be used with care.

12. Use {margin: 0 auto;} to center your layout
13.Don’t write unnecessary markup (<div class=”header-title”><h1>Heading 1</h1></div>)
14. Use Firebug and developer tools in browsers
15. Use position absolute least possible and only where needed

Position absolute is not a solution to layout and should be used only when necessary.

16. Validate continuously your XHTML & CSS

Don't wait for the last minute to validate, validate continuously.

17. Use lists wherever they fit (for navigation, footer, breadcrumbs)

Use lists wherever it's logical to use.

18. Use h1 – h6

Use heading and descendant selectors to format with CSS rather than div with classes for titles.

19. Use fieldsets, labels for forms and give label the “for” attribute

Use appropriate tags for form building.

20. Use Google or your favorite search engine!

Always search for solutions on the Internet to save time.

What's wrong with Telecom now? For the past few weeks I've been experiencing a very low internet quality. I am paying for a 0.5Mb/s connection and at times everything just freezes or goes extremely slow. Here a few connections tests:

An attempt to please God

Why should I as an agnostic bear with a street festival/gathering of a particular group belonging to a religion/sect and be late at wherever I am heading to, because of chantings and dancing of that group on the middle of the road? For someone who still moves around mostly by bus, why should I wait for hours, before my bus arrives at destination for a week once a year, during which some religious group has to make it by foot to some sacred place? Tolerance ...

Ok! I understand that each individual needs to believe in something and feel secured to be doing the right things by adhering to a set of rules, other than constitutional rules; whether Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or Atheism. But to what extent should one tolerate the beliefs of another?

Should a restaurant promoter close his nearly built restaurant because a religious group just found out that they are opening soon next to a plot they own? Because that same religious group intends to build a temple a few meters away from the restaurant, the latter should move even if they are now nearly set to open? If the temple is not yet build on what grounds should the restaurant close? Fearing that your devotees will be affected by the smell of cooked beef (an animal you pray) while coming to the temple you intend to build, the restaurant has to move? If you care so much about your devotees why not build your temple and gather in another location of the island, where neither the smell of beer nor beef would affect your devotees in their attempt to summon God ?

You praise yourself to be non-violent and condemns the killing and slaughtering of animals for the sake of eating. A noble belief in my humble opinion, but unfortunately not a shared belief among everyone. To make your practical non-violent convictions heard, you resort to some other form of violence by crashing through window panes and damage to property? In what way God is supposed to be pleased by your being non-violent to animals through being violent in yet some other ways ?

I am not advocating against any particular religion or sect, but taking as example a recent local event to show my concern about unreasonable practice of religion, and invasion on others freedom!

After much reluctance I've decided to get back to an old dwelling of mine, my studio on blogger. It took me some days dusting here and there, to make it a home finally, hope visitors gonna like it. I've added a real studio room which I hope to update soon with 2011 paintings and a new doormat (my banner).

Some years back I started this blog, in the hope that it would help me make up with the transition from leaving university and getting started with a job. On a Friday 13 here I am again posting after such a long absence.

Today is 1.5 years time that am working in the web field, and I must say a well chosen field for me. I learnt and still learning a lot of stuffs, 1.5 years spent to learning the basics of web site development with moments of victory and some other times defeats. Some moments ago I was saying to myself how good it would have been if could review those 1.5 years, and came to the conclusion that it was not too late.

Finally I've been able to download last outing pix to my pc from cam. It's not really a matter of lack of time but mere laziness i shall say. Well taking into consideration the fact that I've been very busy with interviews and so on lately, it can also be a lack of time as well. here they are (I have a little .. huh big 1 for waves and seascapes ... when I considered myself as an artist back at 18 I used to paint lots of waves, seascapes, n harbor views). First we went to chouxfleur then we went to blue bay beach.

Report as Spam

The Spam filters of many mail service providers lately "laisse a desirer" as we say. After asking a couple of friends around me, I found that it is common for many of us to open our mail box and find these spam mails able to bypass the filters in place. Most of us delete them and very few report these mails as spam.

Some of these mails often come with an attachment thats most of us guess it lright as being a virus.

Some don't even contain any message attached like telling you to download the attachment (and sometimes they do contain very funny messages).

I personally often try to download these attachment, and till now all were blocked by the virus scan of my mail service. But today when I tried I was very surprised to find that one of these attachments did make through the virus scan as well.

After some thought I said maybe its no virus after all. it had the "pdf" extension. But nonetheless. I did not download it ^_^

Power Supply Thing

Today's been one of the most awkward, weird situations of my recent life. It's now a couple of weeks that the power supply of my pc showing signs of failure and all I'd hoped was it to last until I get a new job and fix it. But this morning when I tried to boot my fan would not even rotate an inch. I went to university without fleet saving in ogame :( (... hopefully did not get crashed.)

When I came home tried once more to boot but in vain. What would I gonna do without a pc connected to the Internet ??? No ogame, no msn, no chat, no surfing from here and there ...

I removed the power supply opened it to see if by chance I could (actually I knew I would not understand anything inside it), and after some minutes speculating at it I put it back connected my motherboard and my hard disk and tried to boot and guess what it worked. I don't know how but since it booted I did not shut down ^_^, hopefully tomorrow my friend will get me a new power supply, this one getting too unstable now. Before it was only a few occasional unexpected power down, but now its threatening not to power on for long period of times ..

Cisco Presentation

Today i went to a conference on career prospects by Cisco. At first it sounded great and the idea of it being held at caudan waterfront was quite ravishing i should say. But in the end was not so great. They compared Cisco to UoM (a professional course to university education) which in my opinion was far fetched and unconceivable. I mean we all know about these crash courses and has nothing to do with University education. If one wishes to learn one brand in particular, he is welcomed to follow such a course as the many available today. But University is teaching concepts that can be used in as many brands (tools) one wishes to ...

The organization of the presentation itself was not so great. Was on a haphazard basis, any1 talking at any time as when he had something to say. The presenters lacked in terms of communication skills and arguments, except for 1 presenter. After the presentation i guess it's clear that no crash course teaches communication skills and presentation skills, things that only comes as a bundle with a University Course ^-^

Its the story of Su Jinduo and Su Jinpeng, brother and sister, that alerted the Chinese authority of the scandal. The boy along with another boy managed to escape and reach home.

It is reported that as many as 1000 children were sold to work in brick kilns. Others kidnapped and forced to work as much as 14hr a day n sleep on bricks.

pff .. lets hope so . Yesterday was my final year project presentation, and hopefully the ultimate stepping stone to my degree. In my opinion I did good, but nonetheless apprehension's there :( .. First did my presentation then did the demo of my software. Compared to what i heard about my friends presentations my seems to be better but we never know. All i hope is get a good degree not fall from where I am actually. I did not do much effort this year. I just relaxed. Then in the last few weeks of the second semester I did a big effort come out of a very long sleep n do my software n report of almost 100 pages. So me not getting the best of results in what i do good ( code writing ) won't be at all a surprise :) ..
Now i need to find my self a job. What a big word .. start working .. bye bye internet 24hr / 7 days :( ... bye bye ogame ... aaaaaaaa ... no launching of fleet n raiding, how will i possibly overcome that ??? huh

Saint Seiya Heaven

Saint Seiya is back ... after defeating Hades Seiya is now wounded and lies motionless on a wheel chair and being taken care by Saori. Athena makes a deal with her older sister Artemis to restore Seiya's physical condition and give Artemis supremacy on the Santuary.

The Gods are more than irritated by how Athena's Saints fought the Gods and now Athena 's Saints will now have to fight against the divine punishment of the Gods. The Gold Saints souls are to lament eternally, while Seiya and his friends fight for the earth against Artemis now in control of the Sanctuary.

I watched the opening movie, should say was really nice, with the appearance of two new Gods Artemis and Apollo. Nice fights as well and the way Athena is depicted is mind blowing, when her blood drips and fall in water, nice effects. The story also sounds nice, hope the succeeding episodes will be nice too ...

Dear Blog,
I know been a log time since I'd logged in to post something. Well now exams are over blogging is again one of my top most concerns. Well, one must agree blogging is really a nice way to spend time, actually it makes some one more knowledgeable, to find interesting topics to post. Write good, present things good and bring in some personal touch to the topic in question. All should blog, share how you live your live on a day to day basis, share photos, funny videos and still much more.

Yes was saying that exams are finally over, let's hope and cross fingers my last at UoM ^_^ .. yes my final yr gonna b over soon. Have only to present my final yr project, have the results out, if all ok grab my degree, n set foot in a yet new phase of my life ... work. Dunno how it gonna be at all, I do wanna earn money .. hehe ... and buy what I want, upgrade my pc is one project, cable tv is yet another .. :) .. already have adsl (which was 1 of my project as soon as i start working but thx to my sister ... lol ) ... what else gonna do as i start working ? huh ! lots of other stuffs for sure will come

This post is dedicated to the 130 millions young girls and woman who are already victim of this barbarian practice and to the 2 million of small girls who might be victim of it in the mere future.

I think there is nothing to debate about it, in my opinion its just a barbaric act and there is no justification what so ever to support this practice. It should be a human right that each and every individual has the right to sexual pleasure and none should dictate the sexual life of someone else. Am Bored

Tomorrow I have a test and today is a perfect day for surfing the net instead of revising...err ... I have already printed all notes I need and all I have to do is getting started with my revision but I can't. Here I am sitting n blogging, surfing, grabbing sound n clips from the internet. It may sound strange but for some time now i don't revise for my test and exams as much as I did and ought to. Dunno why... huh actually i do no; loads of reasons maybe because am a little bit tired and fed up after 3 years of my course, it has always been like that, at the very end that i get all the bored feelings. Just a few months left to get my degree and already feeling uneasy and bored. Exams a fortnight away now, I really should get to revising now.

I nearly ended up sitting for my higher school twice because of my bored feelings when exams are near. The whole year I worked hard (well quite hard), I mean I did my level best and now when its only a matter of days and all shall be over, just that very last effort i can't :( ... Now its even worst, consciously I know that I will get through it as I did in the past, hence I don't find any fear to revise. And knowing that I will get through I don't find any motivations as well.

Enough of self introspection for the moment ^_^' gonna have a warm shower n get to some work now.
