“How do I start my own home-based service business?” “What shall we do to start our home-based service business?”

These are the questions asked by my readers in response to my previous post titled “Start Your Home-based Service Business Now And Make Money”

There are considerations before starting any type of business, including a home-based service business. These include the basics, such as:

1. Analyze the demand for service in your community or city as it matches your talent, skills, and marketable know-how. If you want to venture into online, scan the demand of your target customers on the Net.

2. Set up a separate work space at home. This could be as simple as using a spare bedroom or den with a door to keep your work separate. If you rely on the telephone, a separate phone line can be added. When a workshop is needed, consider using a garage or purchasing a large outbuilding.

3). Use on and offline marketing methods to find clients. This includes: viral marketing, newspaper and Yellow Pages ads, flyers and direct mailings, email marketing, article marketing, setting up a website, etc.

4). Create a schedule to divide time between work and family. Balancing both is hard. Scheduling time and sticking to it means more gets done and no one is slighted.

What type of home-based service business that you are going to establish? Again, it depends on the demand of your target customers. Find a need and fill it.

Below are some of the home-business ideas which you can implement, depending on the demand in the community, town or city needing the kinds of services vis-à-vis your aptitude, training, and skills.

1.	Information broker/researcher
2.	Financial planner
3.	Writer
4.	Niche online retailer/eBay seller
5.	Baking
6.	Bed-and-Breakfast proprietor
7.	Childcare
8.	Computer specialist
9.	Gardener
10.	Interior decorator
11.	Photographer
12.	Sewing and alterations
13.	Candle making
14.	Cutflower selling
15.	Transcription services
16.	Handicrafts
17.	Niche newsletter
18.	Herb farming
19.	Party planner
20.	Bookkeeping

Once you have started your home-based service business, it is important that you give it your dedication and commitment to make it grow, expand, and be profitable.

Therefore it must be a kind of business that you enjoy doing so that it will be fun and sustainable, following the revered and famous Chinese philosopher Confucius’ dictum:

“Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

With countless lay-offs, retrenchments and loss of stable income many people are experiencing now, one sure way to get out of the economic rut and survive is to start your own home-based service businesses.

Why home-based service business? Because it requires lower overhead and startup money, making it easier for entrepreneurs with limited funds.

What is a service business?

Service businesses are those that provide help to others. In service business, your product is your service. This can be anything from web-designing, business consulting, accounting and bookkeeping, to managing business accounts.

The basis of a successful service business is one that supplies a need. The old-age adage still holds true: “Find a need and fill it.”

So, in your community or neighborhood, you can start by finding the needs and wants of the people there and then figure out which one you can provide. If you want to serve the borderless community online, you can do so through the internet.

What are the benefits of a home-based service business?

There are several benefits to running a home-based service business. First, you can run the business from your home. Since you already pay electricity, rent or own the home, utilities and car payments, the only thing you need to spend money is the equipment for your business. And, since usually your service business began as a hobby means you already own most of the needed equipment.

Second, a home-based service business requires low overhead and startup costs. The key to keeping the overhead low is taking on only as many projects as you can safely and efficiently handle by yourself.

Options for Home-based service business

As mentioned, you can usually run these service businesses out of your home. Establishing a website for selling your services lowers the overhead even more and maximizes your profit. With the Internet as your potential customer base, the opportunities are endless for marketing and finding clients.

Indeed, a home-based service business is an alternative for people who want to be entrepreneurs without spending a lot in upfront costs. If you have a talent and can meet a need, consider a home-based business, earn money and profit.

I have friends who lost a job that they think offers them the security. I know small business owners who went back to employment because their business does not earn enough to support a family. These are just some of the stories you hear around you. The realities of the financial crisis can struck you when you least expect it.

These people whom I know personally have suffered the unexpected loos of income because they depend on one income stream. They maintained a single job and didn’t have any form of investment. My personal fear of being in their shoes is what keeps me motivated to maintain several side income and keep my day job at the same time. These side jobs are what we call raket in the Philippines. It may be a small business, a freelance job

It’s not a walk at the park but having multiple jobs has several advantages.
1. Provides Extra Income – This is probably the most obvious reason why people keep several jobs. Having a fix income is no longer enough for a person like me who had a taste of the benefits of having additional income.

2. Provides a Fall Back – There’s no such thing as job security. So, having several side jobs in addition to a full time job provides alternative employment. One of these side jobs can become full time job in the unfortunate event of losing your day job.

3. An Opportunity to Learn and Hone a New Skill – I have been blogging on the side for almost three years already. Through blogging, I learned how to use Wordpress as a Content Management System (CMS), learned how to host my own domain and learned Wordpress theme customization. These skills that I acquired have also been sourcse of additional income as well.

4. An Opportunity to Network - having multiple jobs allow you to widen your horizon. Like in freelancing, you would oftentimes be dealing with clients on a personal level. If you have earned your client’s trust he will also give you referrals to those in his network and the cycles goes on.

5. Side Jobs Break the Monotony of a Full Time Job – Variety is the spice of life. Having only a full time job will make you miss a lot of opportunities to learn and connect with other people. Haven’t you experience a time in your work wherein you wished you were somewhere else? I have and my side jobs kept me motivated to work since I will be looking forward to doing something else.

As bloggers, we always want our blog to be visible to search engines. I’m sure you have implemented some Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies for your blog in the past.

However, there’s another way of making your blog more accessible to your target audience and that is through submission to web directories. Like the yellow pages, a web directory allows readers to browse through a list of websites listed under different categories. If you are listed in famous directories then your chances of being found is higher compared to those who did not have their blogs listed.

You should be careful in choosing the right category for your blog though. You cannot just randomly select the category. You should be listed in the category of your niche. This way, people who are searching for websites on your niche will easily find you.

The advantage of a web directory over a search engine is that they don’t rely heavily on deep linking. The link given is the link to the homepage of the website. This makes searching easier and the result more targeted.

There are a lot of user friendly and free directories for you to submit your blog. One of the most common directories is Yahoo! Directory. It’s a reliable web directory and and since it’s Yahoo! you can expect it to have thousands of visitors a day. Best of all, it’s free.

Another free web directory is the DMOZ Open Directory Project . It’s like the Wikipedia of websites. It is constructed and maintained by a global community of volunteer editors. Google, AltaVista, and AOL Search are some of the search engines using the Open Directory Project. It claims to be the “largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web.”

Increasing traffic is what we bloggers want therefore we should make use of available venues where we can promote our blogs. We should always seek for more ways to attract more readers and subscribers. Submitting your blog to free web directory will be a big help in achieving this.

(This is a guest post from Eli of Business Sphere. Visit his blog for more business advice.)

Since many blogs just decay and eventually die, and since everyday there are some 175,000 blogs being born, how do you make your blog competitive and stay longer in the blogosphere?

There are six secret ways to make your blog competitive and strong:

1. Specialize. Don’t be content of posting unrelated topics, from travel to photography to food, to Twitter to Facebook to Google Adsense, to the latest celebrity gossips and what have you. I have seen many blogs which are like these, and the owners are wondering why they have no or little traffic and why their ads produce very little revenues. (represented by cost per click or cost per thousand impressions).

Specialize by create your niche. Once you have created a niche for your blog, don’t forget to let your readers and subscribers understand the difference between what you and the competition are offering.

2. Provide quality content posts as perceived by the readers. The quality of your articles is what the readers say it is, and not how you perceive it to be. You may believe that your blog and your posts are the best there are in the blogosphere, but if the people are not reading, then what’s the use?

3. Link up. A good blog has linkages or links with blog directories. The reason is obvious. A blog directory functions like a telephone directory. If your blog is not listed there, chances are people don’t have any idea that you exist.

4. Be unique. Being unique means your blog has distinct qualities that make it stands out from all other blogs. It also means your blog looks different because of its special characteristics. In short, don’t copy the layout of many blogs which look like Christmas trees with ads all around in different shapes and colors, which even results to very slow loading.

5. Be close to your readers. Listen to your readers’ comments and feedbacks, and acting on what you hear. Without the readers your blog has no reason for existence.

6. Become reader-focused. Blog for your readers. It’s your readers who provide you with the traffic, generate your ads revenue by their clicking and reading your ads, and by buying your online store, if you have one.

Implementing these six secret ways, which are actually management and business principles in practice, can make your blog survive and become successful in the blog marketplace.
