Mas os elementos naturais fizeram um grande estrago: apanhados por uma terrível tempestade de areia, sem nenhuma visibilidade, quarenta competidores ficaram perdidos. Felizmente todos foram salvos em quatro dias. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Estes pequenos episódios, entretanto, serviram para reforçar a lenda do Dakar e a grandiosa vitória de Hubert Auriol, que ganhou a etapa no deserto do Ténéré com mais de uma hora de vantagem para os outros competidores com uma moto BMW. Na categoria carros, a vitória ficou com a dupla Ickx/Brasseur (Mercedes).
