Examples:

USE – 1 Now

Use the Present Continuous with Normal Verbs to express the idea that something is happening now, at this very moment. It can also be used to show that something is not happening now.

Examples:

You are learning English now.
You are not swimming now.
Are you sleeping?
I am sitting.
I am not standing.
Is he sitting or standing?
They are reading their books.
They are not watching television.
What are you doing?
Why aren't you doing your homework?

USE 2 – Longer Actions in Progress Now

In English, "now" can mean: this second, today, this month, this year, this century, and so on. Sometimes, we use the Present Continuous to say that we are in the process of doing a longer action which is in progress; however, we might not be doing it at this exact second.

Examples: (All of these sentences can be said while eating dinner in a restaurant.)

I am studying to become a doctor.
I am not studying to become a dentist.
I am reading the book Tom Sawyer.
I am not reading any books right now.
Are you working on any special projects at work?
Aren't you teaching at the university now?

USE – 3 Near Future

Sometimes, speakers use the Present Continuous to indicate that something will or will not happen in the near future.

Examples:

I am meeting some friends after work.
I am not going to the party tonight.
Is he visiting his parents next weekend?
Isn't he coming with us tonight?

USE 4 – Repetition and Irritation with "Always"

The Present Continuous with words such as "always" or "constantly" expresses the idea that something irritating or shocking often happens. Notice that the meaning is like Simple Present, but with negative emotion. Remember to put the words "always" or "constantly" between "be" and "verb+ing".

Examples:

She is always coming to class late.
He is constantly talking. I wish he would shut up.
I don't like them because they are always complaining.

REMEMBER Non-Continuous Verbs / Mixed Verbs

It is important to remember that Non-Continuous Verbs cannot be used in any continuous tenses. Also, certain non-continuous meanings for Mixed Verbs cannot be used in continuous tenses. Instead of using Present Continuous with these verbs, you must use Simple Present.

Examples:

She is loving this chocolate ice cream. Not Correct
She loves this chocolate ice cream. Correct

ADVERB PLACEMENT

The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as: always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc.

Examples:

You are still watching TV.

USE 1 – Duration from the Past Until Now

We use the Present Perfect Continuous to show that something started in the past and has continued up until now. "For five minutes," "for two weeks," and "since Tuesday" are all durations which can be used with the Present Perfect Continuous.

Examples:

They have been talking for the last hour.
She has been working at that company for three years.
What have you been doing for the last 30 minutes?
James has been teaching at the university since June.
We have been waiting here for over two hours!
Why has Nancy not been taking her medicine for the last three days?

USE 2 – Recently, Lately

You can also use the Present Perfect Continuous WITHOUT a duration such as "for two weeks." Without the duration, the tense has a more general meaning of "lately." We often use the words "lately" or "recently" to emphasize this meaning.

Examples:

Recently, I have been feeling really tired.
She has been watching too much television lately.
Have you been exercising lately?
Mary has been feeling a little depressed.
Lisa has not been practicing her English.
What have you been doing?

IMPORTANT

Remember that the Present Perfect Continuous has the meaning of "lately" or "recently." If you use the Present Perfect Continuous in a question such as "Have you been feeling alright?", it can suggest that the person looks sick or unhealthy. A question such as "Have you been smoking?" can suggest that you smell the smoke on the person. Using this tense in a question suggests you can see, smell, hear or feel the results of the action. It is possible to insult someone by using this tense incorrectly.

REMEMBER – Non-Continuous Verbs/ Mixed Verbs

It is important to remember that Non-Continuous Verbs cannot be used in any continuous tenses. Also, certain non-continuous meanings for Mixed Verbs cannot be used in continuous tenses. Instead of using Present Perfect Continuous with these verbs, you must use Present Perfect.

Examples:

Sam has been having his car for two years. Not Correct
Sam has had his car for two years. Correct

The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as: always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc.

USE 1 – Unspecified Time Before Now

We use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important. You CANNOT use the Present Perfect with specific time expressions such as: yesterday, one year ago, last week, when I was a child, when I lived in Japan, at that moment, that day, one day, etc. We CAN use the Present Perfect with unspecific expressions such as: ever, never, once, many times, several times, before, so far, already, yet, etc.

Examples:

I have seen that movie twenty times.
I think I have met him once before.
There have been many earthquakes in California.
People have traveled to the Moon.
People have not traveled to Mars.
Have you read the book yet?
Nobody has ever climbed that mountain.
A: Has there ever been a war in the United States? / B: Yes, there has been a war in the United States.

How Do You Actually Use the Present Perfect?

The concept of "unspecified time" can be very confusing to English learners. It is best to associate Present Perfect with the following topics:

TOPIC 1 – Experience

You can use the Present Perfect to describe your experience. It is like saying, "I have the experience of..." You can also use this tense to say that you have never had a certain experience. The Present Perfect is NOT used to describe a specific event.

Examples:

I have been to France.
This sentence means that you have had the experience of being in France. Maybe you have been there once, or several times.
I have been to France three times.
You can add the number of times at the end of the sentence.
I have never been to France.
This sentence means that you have not had the experience of going to France.
I think I have seen that movie before.
He has never traveled by train.
Joan has studied two foreign languages.
A: Have you ever met him? / B: No, I have not met him.

TOPIC 2 – Change Over Time

We often use the Present Perfect to talk about change that has happened over a period of time.

Examples:

You have grown since the last time I saw you.
The government has become more interested in arts education.
Japanese has become one of the most popular courses at the university since the Asian studies program was established.
My English has really improved since I moved to Australia.

TOPIC 3 – Accomplishments

We often use the Present Perfect to list the accomplishments of individuals and humanity. You cannot mention a specific time.

Examples:

Man has walked on the Moon.
Our son has learned how to read.
Doctors have cured many deadly diseases.
Scientists have split the atom.

TOPIC 4 – An Uncompleted Action You Are Expecting

We often use the Present Perfect to say that an action which we expected has not happened. Using the Present Perfect suggests that we are still waiting for the action to happen.

Examples:

James has not finished his homework yet.
Susan hasn't mastered Japanese, but she can communicate.
Bill has still not arrived.
The rain hasn't stopped.

TOPIC 5 – Multiple Actions at Different Times

We also use the Present Perfect to talk about several different actions which have occurred in the past at different times. Present Perfect suggests the process is not complete and more actions are possible.

Examples:

The army has attacked that city five times.
I have had four quizzes and five tests so far this semester.
We have had many major problems while working on this project.
She has talked to several specialists about her problem, but nobody knows why she is sick.

Time Expressions with Present Perfect

When we use the Present Perfect it means that something has happened at some point in our lives before now. Remember, the exact time the action happened is not important.

Sometimes, we want to limit the time we are looking in for an experience. We can do this with expressions such as: in the last week, in the last year, this week, this month, so far, up to now, etc.

Examples:

Have you been to Mexico in the last year?
I have seen that movie six times in the last month.
They have had three tests in the last week.
She graduated from university less than three years ago. She has worked for three different companies so far.
My car has broken down three times this week.

NOTICE

"Last year" and "in the last year" are very different in meaning. "Last year" means the year before now, and it is considered a specific time which requires Simple Past. "In the last year" means from 365 days ago until now. It is not considered a specific time, so it requires Present Perfect.

Examples:

I went to Mexico last year. = I went to Mexico in the calendar year before this one.
I have been to Mexico in the last year. = I have been to Mexico at least once at some point between 365 days ago and now.

USE 2 Duration From the Past Until Now (Non-Continuous Verbs)

With Non-Continuous Verbs and non-continuous uses of Mixed Verbs, we use the Present Perfect to show that something started in the past and has continued up until now. "For five minutes," "for two weeks," and "since Tuesday" are all durations which can be used with the Present Perfect.

Examples:

I have had a cold for two weeks.
She has been in England for six months.
Mary has loved chocolate since she was a little girl.

Although the above use of Present Perfect is normally limited to Non-Continuous Verbs and non-continuous uses of Mixed Verbs, the words "live," "work," "teach," and "study" are sometimes used in this way even though they are NOT Non-Continuous Verbs.

Muitos alunos têm dúvidas sobre a correta pronúncia de determinadas palavras em inglês. Sabemos que em linguística, um fonema é a menor unidade sonora (fonética) de uma língua que estabelece contraste de significado para diferenciar palavras. Por exemplo, a diferença entre as palavras prato e trato, quando faladas, está apenas no primeiro fonema: P na primeira e T na segunda. Os fonemas são classificados em vogais, semivogais e consoantes.

Vogais

Vogal é o fonema produzido pelo ar que, expelido dos pulmões, faz vibrar as cordas vocais e não encontra nenhum obstáculo na sua passagem pelo aparelho fonador. Classificam-se em:

Quanto à intensidade

Vogal tônica: é a vogal onde se encontra o acento principal da palavra.
Vogal subtônica: é a vogal onde se encontra o acento secundário da palavra.
Vogal átona: é uma vogal onde não existe qualquer acento da palavra.

Exemplo: Na palavra automaticamente, o primeiro "a" é a vogal tônica, o segundo "a" é a vogal subtônica, e as demais vogais são átonas.

Nota 1: Em alguns idiomas como o chinês não existe o conceito de intensidade da vogal. Em seu lugar, existe o conceito de tom, em que as sílabas são distinguidas pela maneira como são entonadas. Em português, o conceito de "tom" existe quando se diferencia uma pergunta de uma afirmação (ex.: "o açúcar é branco."; "o açúcar é branco?") ou em uma frase exclamativa: "(ex.: "como o açúcar é branco!"). Então percebemos que realmente o açúcar é branco, porque isso é uma parte dos fonemas.

Nota 2: Em nenhuma palavra de até três sílabas existem vogais subtônicas em português. E em algumas preposições, artigos, pronomes e conjunções com uma ou duas sílabas (ex.: por, em, para, um, o, pelo), não existem vogais tônicas.

Quanto ao timbre

Vogais abertas: São as vogais articuladas ao se abrir o máximo a boca. Por exemplo: nas palavras "amora" e "café", todas as vogais são abertas.
Vogais fechadas: São as vogais articuladas ao se abrir o mínimo a boca. Por exemplo: nas palavras "êxodo" e "fôlego", todas as vogais são fechadas.

Alguns gramáticos da língua portuguesa ainda classificam as vogais "e" e "o" na categoria de vogais reduzidas quando são átonas no fim de uma palavra, que em geral são pronunciadas como "i" e "u". Por exemplo, nas palavras "análise" e "camelo".

Quanto ao modo de articulação

Vogais orais: São as vogais pronunciadas completamente através da cavidade oral. Em português, existem de sete a nove vogais orais, de acordo com o dialeto, a saber: "á" [ä], "â" [ɜ̝], "ê" [e], "é" [ɛ], "i" [ɯ̟], "í" [i], "ô" [o], "ó" [ɔ] e "u" [u] (as vogais representadas pelos símbolos [ɯ, ɜ] são comumente representados por [ɨ, ɐ] por sua aproximidade e também por sua semelhança gráfica).
Vogais nasais: São as vogais pronunciadas em que uma parte do ar usado para a pronúncia escapa pela cavidade nasal. Em português, existem cinco vogais nasais. Nas palavras: "maçã", "sempre", "capim", "bondade", e "fundo", os grafemas assinalados em negrito representam vogais nasais. Também são nasais os ditongos "ão", "ãe", "õe" e o ditongo "ui" da palavra "muito".

Quanto ao ponto de articulação

Vogais posteriores: São as vogais pronunciadas com a língua posicionada no fundo da boca, entre o dorso da língua e o véu palatino. Em português, são posteriores as vogais "ô", "ó" e "u".
Vogais anteriores: São as vogais pronunciadas com a língua posicionada na frente da boca entre o dorso da língua e o palato duro. Em português, são anteriores as vogais "ê", "é" e "í".
Vogais centrais: São as vogais pronunciadas com a lingua posicionada no centro da boca. Em português, são centrais as vogais "á", "â", e em alguns dialetos também têm o "i" átono, pronunciado ora central ora quase posterior.

Semivogais

As semivogais são fonemas que não ocupam a posição de núcleo da sílaba, devendo, portanto, associar-se a uma vogal para formarem uma sílaba. Em português, somente os fonemas representados pelas letras "i" e "u" em ditongos e tritongos são considerados semi-vogais. Um ditongo é sempre formado por uma vogal mais uma Semivogal. Quando a semivogal vem antes da vogal, o ditongo é dito "crescente" (como em "jaguar"). Quando a semivogal vem depois, o ditongo é dito "decrescente" (como em "demais"). Nos ditongos "ui" e "iu", uma das letras é sempre considerada vogal e a outra é semivogal. No caso dos tritongos, todos eles são formados por uma vogal intercalada entre duas semivogais.

Consoantes

Consoantes são fonemas assilábicos que se produzem após ultrapassar um obstáculo que se opõe à corrente de ar no aparelho fonador. Estes obstáculos incluem os lábios, os dentes, a língua, o palato, o véu palatino e a úvula.

Quanto ao papel das cordas vocais

Consoantes surdas (ou desvozeadas): São as consoantes pronunciadas sem que as cordas vocais sejam postas em vibração. São surdas as seguintes consoantes em português: f, k, p, c, s, t, x, ch.
Consoantes sonoras (ou vozeadas): São as consoantes pronunciadas com a vibração das cordas vocais. São sonoras as seguintes consoantes em português: b, d, g, j, l, lh, m, n, nh, r, v, z.

Quanto ao modo de articulação

Consoantes oclusivas: São as consoantes pronunciadas fechando-se totalmente o aparelho fonador, sem dar espaço para o ar sair. São oclusivas as seguintes consoantes: p, t, k, b, d, g.
Consoantes fricativas: São as consoantes pronunciadas através de uma corrente de ar que se fricciona em um obstáculo. São fricativas as seguintes consoantes em português: f, j, s, ch, v, z.
Consoantes laterais: São as consoantes pronunciadas ao fazer passar a corrente de ar nos dois cantos da boca ao lado da língua. Em português, são laterais apenas as consoantes "l" e "lh".
Consoantes vibrantes: São as consoantes pronunciadas através da vibração de algum elemento do aparelho fonador, em geral a língua ou o véu palatino. Em português, são vibrantes apenas as duas variedades do "r", como em "carro" e em "caro".
Consoantes nasais: São as consoantes em que o ar sai pelas fossas nasais, em vez da boca. Em português, são nasais as consoantes "m", "n" e "nh".

Quanto ao ponto de articulação

Consoantes bilabiais: São as consoantes pronunciadas com o contato dos dois lábios. Em português, são bilabiais as consoantes: p, b, m.
Consoantes dentais: São as consoantes pronunciadas com a língua entre os dentes. Em português são dentais as consoantes: t, d e n.
Consoantes alveolares: São as consoantes pronunciadas com o contato da língua nos alvéolos dos dentes. Em português, são alveolares as consoantes: s, z, l e o "r" fraco.
Consoantes labiodentais: São as consoantes pronunciadas com o contato dos lábios na arcada superior dos dentes. Em português, são labiodentais as consoantes "f" e "v".
Consoantes palatais: São as consoantes pronunciadas com o contato da língua com o palato. Em português, são palatais as seguintes consoantes: j, ch, lh e nh, e, em alguns dialetos, também as consoantes "t" e "d" antes de "i".
Consoantes retroflexivas: São as consoantes pronunciadas com a língua curvada. Em português, somente alguns dialetos do Brasil têm uma consoante retroflexiva, o chamado "r" caipira.
Consoantes velares: São as consoantes pronunciadas com a parte traseira da língua no véu palatino. Em português, são velares as consoantes: k, g e rr (em alguns dialetos brasileiros).
Consoantes uvulares: São as consoantes pronunciadas através da vibração da úvula. Em português, existem na variedade europeia e no dialeto fluminense; no caso, o "r" forte.
Consoantes glotais: São as consoantes pronunciadas através da vibração da glote. Não há consoantes glotais em português e em praticamente nenhum dos idiomas ocidentais. Exemplos de idiomas com consoantes glotais são o hebraico e o árabe.

Nota: No Brasil, é perceptível a diferença de pronúncia da palavra tia entre pessoas do Rio de Janeiro e Rio Grande do Sul, por exemplo. De modo geral, para os primeiros, a letra "t" é um fonema palatal (pronunciado mais ou menos como "txia", enquanto para os segundos representa um fonema alveolar. Ainda que — assim como em prato e trato — os sons correspondentes à letra t de tia sejam diferentes (isto é, letras iguais e sons diferentes), o fonema é um só, visto que, na língua, não se estabelece distinção de significado ao pronunciar-se /tia/ ou /txia/.

Aprendendo outros idiomas

Diferentes línguas possuem fonemas diferentes, em qualidade e número. Em outras palavras, diferentes línguas fazem uso de matrizes fonológicas diferentes. No início, o aprendiz vai perceber os sons da língua estrangeira como sendo semelhantes aos sons da língua materna. Sem a devida orientação, irá basear sua pronúncia num modelo acústico intermediário entre os sons das duas línguas, ao invés de baseá-la no modelo acústico específico da língua estrangeira, assim como ocorre no aprendizado da língua materna. Em outras palavras, o aprendiz criará e assimilará sua própria versão de matriz fonológica, caracterizando seu "sotaque".

O que diferencia uma vogal da outra, na maioria das línguas, não é a intensidade nem a freqüência, mas o timbre. Diferentes timbres são produzidos pelo posicionamento da língua na boca, que muda a forma da cavidade bucal. Sons vogais variam portanto de forma contínua, podendo ser produzidos por um número praticamente infinito de posições intermediárias da língua dentro da cavidade bucal.

Em línguas menos compactas, com menor ocorrência de palavras monossilábicas e com uma média superior de sílabas por palavra, o número de fonemas não precisa ser tão grande e a diferença entre cada vogal pode ser maior. Este é o caso do espanhol (5 fonemas vogais) e do português (7 fonemas vogais). O inglês, entretanto, é uma língua notadamente econômica no uso de sílabas, compacta, com um grande número de palavras monossilábicas. Isto naturalmente exige um número maior de fonemas vogais para atender a essa maior "demanda" de um sistema com um número reduzido de combinações possíveis.

Em sistemas fonológicos com um grande número de fonemas vogais, a diferença entre cada um tende a ser mínima, o que exige uma maior acuidade auditiva de parte dos falantes dessa língua tanto no reconhecimento quanto na produção oral. O problema é agravado pelo fato de que não existem delimitações claras e precisas entre vogais. No estudo da fonologia, a descrição e a classificação das consoantes é muito mais fácil. Um som pode ser uma oclusiva ou uma fricativa, mas dificilmente poderá ser classificado como algo intermediário. É perfeitamente possível, entretanto, produzir sons intermediários entre uma vogal alta e uma média. Portanto, este talvez seja o maior e mais persistente problema não apenas para estudantes de inglês como língua estrangeira que falam português ou espanhol como língua materna, mas para todos aqueles cujas línguas não possuem um número tão grande de vogais dentro do espectro vocálico quanto o inglês. O número de vogais com relevância fonêmica em uma língua é portanto um fator determinante do grau de dificuldade em se obter proficiência oral e uma boa pronúncia.

Portanto, quanto maior for o número de vogais de uma determinada língua, tanto menor e mais sutil será a diferença entre elas. Desta forma, torna-se muito difícil manter uma distinção clara entre vogais dentro de um inventário tão repleto de fonemas (como no inglês) e, ao mesmo tempo, produzido por um aparelho articulatório tão limitado. Em primeiro lugar, este é um problema que afeta a assimilação da língua materna, fazendo com que a criança leve mais tempo até conseguir distinguir todas as vogais. Em segundo lugar, e com maior insistência, o estudante de língua estrangeira será afetado, principalmente quando a língua materna tiver um número de vogais menor do que o número de vogais da língua estrangeira. Da mesma forma que falantes nativos de espanhol exibem uma notória dificuldade em distinguir as vogais do português nas palavras pê e pé, vô e vó, também nós que temos o português como língua materna, temos dificuldades evidentes em distinguir determinadas vogais do inglês.

Erros comuns

Estes são provavelmente os erros mais comuns com as vogais do inglês de estudantes cuja língua materna é português.

A) O primeiro problema, e talvez o mais evidente deles, ocorre na área das vogais anteriores altas. Os fonemas /iy/ e /I/ do inglês muito provavelmente serão percebidos e reproduzidos como /i/ do português, neutralizando portanto o único contraste entre palavras como:

beach /biytsh/ - bitch /bItsh/
bead /biyd/ - bid /bId/
beat /biyt/ - bit /bIt/
cheap /tshiyp/ - chip /tshIp/
eat /iyt/ - it /It/
feel /fiyl/ - fill /fIl/
feet /fiyt/ - fit /fIt/
green /griyn/ - grin /grIn/
heat /hiyt/ - hit /hIt/
heel /hiyl/ - hill /hIl/
lead /liyd/ - lid /lId/
leap /liyp/ - lip /lIp/
least /liyst/ - list /lIst/

Uma vez que os fonemas /iy/ e /I/ do inglês têm uma carga funcional muito ampla, isto é, ocorrem com muita freqüência como único elemento diferenciador, qualquer neutralização nesta área pode representar um sério problema.

B) Outro problema de provável ocorrência situa-se na área dos fonemas /æ/ e /e/ do inglês. Ambos serão percebidos como /é/ do português, cuja posição de articulação é intermediária, um pouco mais próxima de /e/ do que de /æ/. Este desvio neutraliza o contraste entre palavras como:

bed /bed/ - bad /bæd/
beg /beg/ - bag /bæg/
dead /ded/ - dad /dæd/
end /end/ - and /ænd/
flesh /flesh/ - flash /flæsh/
gem /dzhem/ - jam /dzhæm/
guess /ges/ - gas /gæs/
head /hed/ - had /hæd/

C) A vogal média-central neutra /ə/ do inglês, especialmente quando tônica, não têm equivalente em português, o que significa possibilidade de erro fonológico em palavras como but /bət/ e rubber/'rəbər/. Também a forma reduzida e atônica deste fonema, denominada "xevá" ou "xuá", (de alta ocorrência no inglês), representa uma notória dificuldade mesmo a longo prazo. Isto porque no português vogais atônicas não são reduzidas e neutralizadas como em inglês. É muito provável que o aluno brasileiro venha a ser influenciado pela ortografia neste caso. A palavra photographer, por exemplo, poderá vir a ser pronunciada/fô'tógrafêr/ em vez do correto /fə'tagrəfər/.

D) Brasileiros encontrarão dificuldade para distinguir entre os sons de /a/ e /o/ do inglês. Na maioria das vezes /a/ será percebido como /ó/ do português. Este problema é agravado pelo fato de que o fonema /a/ do inglês é muitas vezes representado na ortografia pela letra “o”, a qual freqüentemente corresponde, em português, a /ó/, como na palavra pó. Sendo /ó/ do português muito parecido com /o/ do inglês, como por exemplo na palavra law, haverá possibilidade de erro fonológico, como nos seguintes exemplos:

E) Outra área de notória dificuldade para brasileiros é a das vogais posteriores altas. O fonema/u/ do português tem uma posição de articulação intermediária e conseqüentemente um som exatamente intermediário entre /U/ e /uw/ do inglês. O resultado disto é que estes fonemas serão percebidos e reproduzidos como /u/, neutralizando portanto o único contraste entre palavras como:

Como pronunciar o sufixo "_ed" do passado dos verbos regulares

Existem três formas de pronúncia para o “_ed”, que podem ser definidas por regras:

Sempre que a pronúncia do verbo no infinitivo terminar em vogal ou consoante sonora, a pronúncia do sufixo "_ed" será /d/. Verbos terminados em som de l – n – m – r – b – v – g – w – y – z e terminados em ditongos têm o som de ed com a pronúncia de /d/, sendo que a pronúncia final da sílaba faz vibrar as cordas vocais.

Obs.: Para perceber a vibração das cordas vocais coloque a mão sobre a garganta, mas tomem cuidado, visto que podem acabar cometendo erros ao utilizarem este método. Atenham-se às regras mais gerais e deixem a técnica da vibração das cordas vocais como uma forma de consulta rápida, quando assim for necessário.

Tecnicamente, diz-se que existe um fonema /t/ no inglês, representado pelo grafema "t" (representação gráfica), que pode ser pronunciado como diferentes "alofones", que são sons alternativos, representados por símbolos entre colchetes como [t], [ɾ] e [tʰ] no Alfabeto Fonético Internacional.

É como no português, em que o "r" é pronunciado de formas diferentes, como em "carro" e "arara", ou nas pronúncias "caipira" (o "r" enrolado ou retroflexo), carioca e nordestina (na garganta) e na sulista (onde o "rr" é algumas vezes pronunciado com vibração da língua no céu da boca), mas é sempre compreendido como "r" ou "rr".

Tentei sintetizar a pronúncia do "r inglês" com algumas regras:

*** Regra 1 ***

Quando o fonema do inglês /t/, ou o fonema /d/, está entre vogais, pode ser pronunciada como o nosso "r" da palavra "arara" (som representado por [ɾ]) *, mas somente em alguns dialetos. Isso se chama "flapping" ou "tapping", e são os americanos e australianos que geralmente pronunciam assim, não os ingleses. Exemplos: eating, water, better, etc.

O mesmo fenômeno pode ocorrer quando o fonema está entre vogal+N ou vogal+L e uma outra vogal, como nas palavras "older", "internet" (o primeiro t somente), "butter", "barter", "faculty", etc.

Em todos esses casos, os ingleses (e a maioria dos outros países que falam inglês) geralmente falam o /d/ e o /t/ de forma muito parecido com que nós falamos. Dizem que a língua toca uma posição levemente diferente, mas isso não é muito importante...

*** Regra 2 ***

Quando aparece no início da frase, o /t/, assim como o /p/ e o /k/, apresenta "aspiração", ou seja, um leve sopro de ar. Alguns professores de inglês recomendam colocar uma folha de papel em pé na frente da boca e dizer alguma palavra que começa com /t/, como "time"; se a folha se mexer, está correto; se não, tem que praticar mais. Esse "t aspirado" é representado como [tʰ]. Exemplos: time, try, team, to, too, two, etc.

Alguns brasileiros confundem o som do "to" (que é igual a "too" e "two") com "tchu" (ou seja, com o "t" pronunciado como o "tch" de "tchau"). Mas não é bem assim! O "t" é um "t" mesmo, mas é pronunciado com a língua mais encostada na parte de trás dos dentes e com aspiração.

Com o /d/, essa regra 2 não se aplica. Ou seja, ele nunca é pronunciado aspirado. Se você pronunciar o /t/, o /p/ e o /k/ sem aspiração, eles podem ser entendidos como /d/, /b/ ou /g/. Por exemplo, se você pronuncia "time" sem o "sopro", os nativos podem confundir com "dime". Ou confundir "pig" com "big".

*** Regra 3 ***

Quando está no fim das palavras, ou antes de consoantes, muitas vezes o /t/ é pronunciado com um "golpe de glote". Isso significa que você não "solta" o t, apenas o articula e dá um pequeno estalo na garganta. Esse estalo é aquele som que você faz quando nega algo dizendo hã-hã. Se você tentar pronunciar a palavra "habitat" ou "Etna" com o "t mudo", sem pronunciar um "i" depois do "t" (ou seja, sem dizer "habitáti" ou "étina"), vai ficar igual ao /t/ inglês nessa condição. Exemplos: football, "at noon", etc.

*** Regra 4 ***

O "th", na maioria das vezes, é um dígrafo, ou seja, duas letras que representam apenas um som. O fonema que ele representa não é mais o /t/, e sim o /θ/ (representado por "teta" porque é o som que essa letra tem no Grego). Esse som é pronunciado com a língua entre os dentes na maioria dos dialetos. Em algumas palavras, como em "the", "those", "together", etc., parece-se com um "d" ou um "z" pronunciado com a língua entre os dentes (embora muitos brasileiros pensem que é simplesmente um "d", por não terem familiaridade com o fonema). Em outras, como em "thin", "everything", etc., parece-se com um "t" ou um "s" pronunciado com a língua entre os dentes.

Esses sons são iguais à pronúncia do "s" e do "z" das pessoas que têm um problema de dicção conhecido como "língua presa" ("lisp", em inglês), que o vocalista do grupo Raça Negra apresentava, por exemplo. Em alguns dialetos de negros do Sul dos EUA, o "th" é pronunciado como /t/ e /d/ mesmo. No dialeto "cockney", dos trabalhadores de Londres, o "th" é frequentemente pronunciado como /f/ ou /v/ (everything=everyfing). Mas, em geral, ele não tem som de "f" não. Brasileiro pensa que tem porque não está acostumado com o fonema original, e o entende como "f".

Em algumas raras palavras composta, como "pothole", o "th" não é um dígrafo. A pronúncia deve ser "pot hole", ou seja, é como se as palavras "pot" e "hole" estivessem separadas.

English verb phrases give information of different kinds. Verb phrases indicate: tense, which gives information about time, e.g. I speak (present tense) versus I spoke (past tense); aspect, which gives information about the speaker’s perspective on time, e.g. I spoke (simple aspect) versus I was speaking (progressive aspect); voice, whether active (e.g. She destroyed it) or passive (e.g. It was destroyed), which gives information about agents and recipients of verb processes.

This article deals with contrasts between the different tenses (present and past), and the different aspects (progressive and perfect).

Progressive (also known as continuous) aspect is formed with auxiliary verb be + the -ing participle of a lexical verb.

Perfect aspect is formed with auxiliary verb have + the -ed participle form of a lexical verb.

Although English does not have a future tense, the term ‘future’ is often used to refer to modal and aspect combinations, such as ‘future perfect’ (e.g. I will have studied for three hours by the time I finish.) or ‘future progressive’ (She will be arriving tomorrow.).

Tense and aspect are combined in the verb phrase. The tense is shown on the first verb in the verb phrase (unless it is a modal). All subsequent verbs have non-tensed forms (-ing participle, -ed participle, or infinitive). A verb phrase may include both aspects, progressive and perfect.

- Examples of aspect in present and past tense

Tense

English verbs can show two tenses, present and past. Examples are given in the table overleaf.

The marking of tense on irregular verbs often involves internal sound changes (e.g. sit–sat, speak–spoke).

Present tenses are mostly concerned with talking about present time, and past tenses are mostly concerned with talking about past time.

The present tense forms are also used to talk about other kinds of time, especially the future. Present tense forms can also refer to the past. This is particularly true of narratives, where past events may be recounted partly or wholly in the present tense (for example, jokes are often told entirely in present tense). This is sometimes referred to as the ‘historic present’. Examples of present tense forms with future and past reference are given in the table below.

The past tense forms are also used to refer to present time, especially for reasons of politeness or indirectness. This is because the past tense distances an event from the present, and distancing an event can make it more indirect. Examples are given in the table below.

As can be seen in the table above, past tense may combine with progressive aspect (we were wondering/we were wanting) to further emphasise politeness, indirectness or tentativeness.

Aspect and meaning

Aspect refers to the speaker’s/writer’s perspective on the time of an event. In English, aspect is concerned mainly with how the speaker perceives the duration of events, and how different events relate to one another in time. An event may be referred to in different ways, even though the point in time when it occurs may be unchanged. For example, the same event in the past can be referred to by either the past simple or the present perfect, depending on the speaker’s perception of the importance or relevance of an event:

A: They’ve sold their house there, you know.

B: Oh have they. Where have they gone?

A: Oh she’s a bit fed up really. They sold the house because he wants a job up north.

The speaker uses perfect aspect (have sold) to announce the news of the house sale (a typical use of the present perfect to mark ‘newsworthiness’) but then uses the past simple (sold) when expanding on the details, even though both verbs refer to the same event.

The choice of aspect may also reflect an emphasis on whether an event was long-lasting or just a point in time. It may also reflect whether it is to be seen as temporary or permanent, whether it is/was already in progress when something else happened, whether it is generally or always the case, whether it happens regularly, etc.

English has two aspects: progressive (sometimes called continuous) aspect and perfect aspect.

Os verbos no simple present são empregados para indicar uma ação habitual, que ocorre no momento em que é enunciada. Normalmente aparece após expressões de tempo como when, as soon as, before e after. Alguns advérbios de frequência também funcionam como indicadores do simple present, tais como always, generally, seldom, often, usually, frequently, every day, all the time.

Afirmativa: Sujeito + Infinitivo (sem to). Para he, she, it ocorre acréscimo de –s, –es ou –ies.

I drink (Eu bebo)
He drinks. (Ele bebe)

Negativa: Sujeito + Do/Does + Not + Verbo principal no infinitivo (sem to). Para he, she, it usa-se does; para as demais usa-se do.

I do not drink = I don’t drink. (Eu não bebo)
He does not drink = He doesn’t drink. (Ele não bebe)

Interrogativa: Do/Does + Sujeito + Verbo no infinitivo (sem to)

Do I drink? (Eu bebo?)
Does he drink? (Ele bebe?)

Exemplos:

Brazil often wins the world cup. (O Brasil frequentemente vence a copa do mundo.)
I always see my girlfriend. (Eu sempre vejo minha namorada.)
The stars always shine in the dark sky. (As estrelas sempre brilham no céu escuro.)

Podemos usar o Simple Present para afirmar ou negar uma opinião, algo que acreditamos ser verdadeiro ou não.

You look great in this dress.
I don't think it's a good idea to lie.
Italians eat lots of pasta.
In Canada, the houses are not made of bricks.

O Simple Present pode também transmitir a idéia de que algo está acontecendo ou não no presente momento, ou uma condição em geral.

I don't have a car.
He is at home now.
We need help with our homework.

Atenção: Não use o verbo auxiliar "to do" com o verbo "to be". Inverta o sujeito e o verbo para a forma interrogativa e acrescente "not" para a forma negativa.

I am not sad.

Going to - Future

O futuro, além da forma will, também pode ser expresso pela forma be going to. Para utilizá-la, é necessário conjugar o verbo to be de acordo com a pessoa a que o verbo se refere e acrescentar o verbo principal no infinitivo.

be (conjugado) + going to + verbo principal

O be going to pode ser usado para:

Falar de planos que foram feitos com antecedência. Ex: I'm going to buy a car next month. (Eu vou comprar um carro mês que vem).

Fazer previsões num futuro próximo. Ex: I think it's going to rain. (Eu acho que vai chover).

Também pode ser usado com a palavra probably (provavelmente) Ex: I probably going to talk with her. (Eu provavelmente vou falar com ela).

Atenção: Embora a combinação entre going to e o verbo to go seja possível, ela deve ser evitada. Como alternativa utiliza-se o present continuous.

Em vez de: I'm going to go to my home. (Eu vou ir pra minha casa).
Usa-se: I'm going to my home. (Eu vou pra minha casa ou eu estou indo pra minha casa).

O futuro com o be going to tem as seguintes formas:

Will Future

O Will Future ou Simple Future é uma das formas mais comuns e fáceis de expressar o tempo futuro na língua inglesa. Para formar uma oração no Will Future, basta colocar o verbo auxiliar antes do verbo principal.

Ex: I will follow you. = Eu te seguirei.

Ex: I will dance with you. = Eu dançarei com você.

Na maioria das vezes, o “will” é utilizado na forma contrata, ou seja, abreviada.

Ex: I’ll get the money. = Eu darei o dinheiro.

Para fazermos uma oração no simple future, porém na forma interrogativa, apenas colocamos o “will” antes do sujeito.

Ex: Will you join us tonight? = Você se juntará a nós esta noite?

Para usarmos a forma negativa, colocamos o “not” após o verbo auxiliar “will”.

Ex: I think I will not travel. = Eu acho que não viajarei.

NOTAS:

O verbo auxiliar did não possui nenhum significado em particular, mas a sua utilização é necessária tanto na negativa como na interrogativa.
O tempo verbal past simple estabelece uma relação somente com o passado.
