RIP, Randy Meisner

According to a post on the official Eagles Facebook page, Randy Meisner has passed away. According to their post, he died on"July 26 in Los Angeles at age 77, due to complications from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease."

This news is devastating not only to his family and friends, but to his fans and the music community at large. Randy Meisner's distinct voice was unlike any other, and he was instrumental in building the band that would become a worldwide phenomenon.

His most famous song "Take It to the Limit" has reached an iconic status that few achieve, but his other contributions such as the poignant "Try and Love Again" and the incendiary "Too Many Hands" enriched the band's albums. Listen to "Outlaw Man" if you want to hear a demonstration of his prowess on the bass guitar. He was a massive asset to the band on both the low and the high end.

His solo career gave him a chance to branch out artistically and work with other songwriters. He showed more range than he had been able to do with the Eagles. When he returned to Poco to record Legacy in 1989, he was able to help them achieve a top 40 hit with the beautiful "Nothing to Hide."

Randy's final appearance with the Eagles was at their Hall of Fame induction in 1997. In his later years, Randy always seemed positive and philosophical about his time with the Eagles and his life in general. While his health may have deteriorated, his sweet spirit did not.

He will be greatly missed.

Condolences to Randy on the loss of his mother

Emilie Meisner, Randy's mother, passed away on Sunday, July 11th at the age of 99. She was a lifetime resident of Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Her obituary can be viewed here. Our condolences go out to Randy and his family. Thanks to Eve for letting us know about this.

Randy appears in "Canyon of Dreams" book

According to LA Weekly, Randy is one of the people listed as appearing in the upcoming book Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and Music of Laurel Canyon Photo Book and History by Harvey Kubernik. Here's the relevant snippet:

Watch Out for Randy Imposter

As some of you may already know, there is a man who impersonates Randy Meisner in an attempt to solicit gifts and money. This man frequents casinos, mostly in the Las Vegas area. If you are approached by this man and he claims to be Randy Meisner, please report him. He is a con man.

Mike A. just happened to catch Randy participating in the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction last week as a celebrity driver, who drove one of the cars onto the auction block. Those with the Speed Channel might be able to catch it on a rerun. It appears they're airing some highlights from the Scottsdale auction tonight (Oct. 20) at 10:00 pm Eastern, but I have no idea if he'll be on there.

Randy and the World Class Rockers's Apr. 6 show

Randy appeared with the World Class Rockers at the Naples Music Festival on Sunday, April 6. The event was a benefit to raise funds for The Garden of Hope and Courage, a memorial garden. You can read more about the show and see some photos (none of Randy, I'm afraid) in The Naples News.

The World Class Rocker site has a new photo of Randy (see small version on left; go to their site to see the photo larger). Nice jacket!

Randy going to Europe in June?

Found this interesting mention in the Reidsville Review:

"[Michael] Ken will tour Europe in June. He said he already has a fan base there; a couple songs from his first two albums, "Livin' On Borrowed Time" and "Somewhere in Carolina," are hitting high on the music charts. He'll have the chance to play with Randy Meisner, who wrote "Take it to the Limit" with the Eagles."

So Randy will be in Europe in June, apparently. I wonder what else he is up to there?
