Jennie Villanueva: On Starting-up Pandera Bakeshop

Jennie has been working in a corporate setting with combined experiences in sales, journalism, marketing, training, and events management, for more than 25 years now. But it was during the time of pandemic that she finally decided to turn her baking passion into a profitable business. She started learning how to bake after her daughter was born in 2013. Right about the same time, she resigned from her stint as a News writer at RPN 9 to concentrate on her small business and on being a first-time mom.

She is the woman behind Pandera Bakeshop. Pandera is coined from the word ‘panadera’ which, in English, translates to ‘baker.’

Motherhood inspired Jennie to try and become the best version of herself in every way for her daughter. From handpicking fresh fruits and vegetables in the groceries and organic markets to food preparations, and baking and making nutritious snacks for her little girl. She became preoccupied with browsing recipe books, and watching cooking and baking shows on the television, and surfing the internet for some interesting bread pastries and cake recipes. “I bake at least twice a week, for personal consumption, and almost every day when there were orders from customers. I also see to it that when I bake something new, I let a couple of friends and family try it first, to get first-hand feedback from them,” she says.

Since I learned how to bake pandesal, you would seldom see me buy bread from groceries or bakeshops. I love how the aroma of freshly baked pandesal gives a very welcoming feeling to our home. That’s why I would rather bake it myself,” she adds. As the demand grew, she finally transitioned into turning her passion into a pandemic business, accomplishing her branding and registration in a matter of 5 days.

What took her so long to finally decide to put up her Pandera business? “I didn’t have the luxury of time to get into formal training, being a full-time mom, it was my personal choice to and a joint decision by Cassey’s dad and me to make the business a secondary priority while Cassey is still in her crucial development years. But now that she’s growing up, it is giving me more time to finally focus on the business we started,” Jennie added.

She also explains that starting a business requires full commitment. Once you start it, there’s no turning back. Thanks to the cloud business ideas there is a low barrier to entry and relatively cheaper startup costs. “I don’t have that much money to waste on a trial and error business, I’d rather be slow but sure, than be all out then fail,” she quipped. This is the reason why Pandera has not officially jumped from her home kitchen to an actual take-out bakeshop. Her cloud-business has profited in the past 3 years, even without an actual store, and has consistently paid its dues and taxes, but unlike other businesses, she feels that her funds are not yet enough to put up a full-blown store, and she does not believe in relying on business loans or getting an investor just to get a business started.

“I’ve seen a lot of start-up food businesses fail, this is why I am being very careful. It may seem slow, how my business is going now, and a lot of my friends and family members are upfront with me in suggesting I should take the risk. But, my instincts say I’d rather not. I may be a bit slow but there is movement, and I can see myself getting closer to my goal each day,” she explained.

The long-awaited Deutsches Afrikakorps, with their arsenal of mobile, mechanized weaponry and vehicles, has arrived. The Afrika Korps was infamous for their prowess in the North African deserts, and they made their debut in both single-player and multiplayer.

The Afrikakorps is the game's most radical and unconventional army. It will appeal to players who like to play aggressively and keep the pressure on the enemy, benefiting greatly from the synergy between its specialized infantry and armored vehicle roster. The Half-track can be used by Afrikakorps players to quickly deploy troops in response to new threats or to sustain the offensive, while the versatile Panzer III is the army's workhorse tank. The Armored Reserves system allows the terrifying Tiger Tank and other heavily armored options to be deployed. The Afrikakorps had to rely on their vehicle-towing capabilities in the harsh deserts of North Africa to reposition their anti-tank Flak 36 88mm cannon or repair damaged tanks.

Let your creative juices flow by exploring a new hobby. This 2022, I got myself into journaling both physically (using planners) and digitally (using Notion). I tried knitting but I guess that hobby isn't for me. This 2023, I want to read more books and plant. A new hobby will definitely keep us distracted especially if we need to reduce time facing our computers and phones.

Decluttering

Maybe it's now time to declutter your closet. Choose which clothes you want to wear and you can either give the excess clothes to charity, or to relatives or you can make an income from it by doing a garage sale together with the other home items that you think you won't need.

Financial Budgeting

With the inflation and rising necessities but the salary remaining the same, our allowance allocation usually is not being followed hence resulting in a messy budgeting situation. You can try a budget planning calculator online to help you have a rundown of the things you need to consider for budget planning.

Stay Healthy

We highly suggest doing a yearly general check-up. If you have an HMO, you can ask them if it's possible for you to avail of a general check-up. This will help you to know what things you need to do or what food you need to avoid. Staying healthy is not about going to the gym and eating healthy food. You need to know your body's whole condition as well.

Pre-pandemic, I remembered that we had already tried to check in at Astrotel Novaliches and I think it was way back in 2018. Now that I am living one ride away from Novaliches, I always saw this particular branch, and seeing what's inside this specific budget hotel made me realize that it's been taken care of because the room quality is still excellent. We recently went back to Astrotel Novaliches and let me tour you to one of their budget rooms.

Astrotel is one of the known budget hotels that we usually saw in different city locations. One of the oldest branches is their Novaliches branch which is located at the heart of Novaliches Bayan. Astrotel Novaliches is fully operational and follows the pandemic protocols.

Room Features

We stayed in one of their rooms, particularly in their Manilyn Monroe room. I love that it is spacious and the TV + aircon were well-maintained. The WiFi connection for this particular room was fast.

Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothbrush), 2 sets of slippers, and 2 bottles of water are provided for the guests to use.

Amenities

Astrotel Novaliches have parking spaces available good for both motorcycles and cars. If you need food, you can order their GALAXYlog which you can avail of at any time of the day. Of course, there are smaller, bigger and more themed rooms available and I hope that there would be another time that we can try them.

Experience

- For this particular room, sad to say there is a very limited amount of power socket available. It is located in the TV area and I guess I'm glad that the available desk is high so we were able to plug our device.

- As mentioned above, I'm surprised that this particular branch is clean despite being one of the oldest branches. Kudos to everyone behind maintaining Astrotel Novaliches.

- I am also happy to see the staff as they all welcoming and you can feel that it is genuine.

Since the pandemic restriction eased out a bit, person-to-person meetings and traveling to other places are back to their new normal course. Companies and organizations can hold company meetings and events again and one of the most significant factors to consider is choosing the right venue. Recently, we visited Capuchin Retreat Center, which is a suitable venue for such big gatherings.

Located in San Sebastian, Lipa City, Batangas, Capuchin Retreat Center is a big, closed area surrounded by luscious local plants and trees. Inside the whole area is the location of Our Lady of Lourdes Seminary and the actual retreat center.

Capuchin Retreat Center can accommodate up to 300 persons. There are different types of rooms available such as single rooms, twin-sharing rooms, triads which can occupy up to 3 persons inside, and rooms with bunk beds. Some rooms are air-conditioned but some are not but fret not the room is well-ventilated and the wall fan really helps the good flow of air inside the room.

We stayed in one of the rooms on the first floor. Our room is good for 3 people (2 single beds and one roll-up bed). Clean sheets and blankets are provided per room.

There's a mini closet, dresser, and a really good amount of plugs inside the room. A clean toilet with a shower is also inside the room.

Aside from the room, you can also rent their conference hall which is good for meetings, events, and other activities. Meals and snacks are aplenty and are located at their spacious canteen. Be sure not to miss the Barako coffee that they serve.

Since Capuchin Retreat Center is a place where you can see priests and nuns around, it is highly recommended to practice the best behavior. The whole place is clean so please avoid littering. They also implement the lights-off rule by 10PM to help save electricity and there should not be people loitering around by that time.

I enjoyed roaming around during day time. There are a lot of things to enjoy inside the retreat center.

Soul Hackers 2 takes place in a near-future metropolis where humans and demons dwell in secret, with certain humans forming pacts with demons to become Devil Summoners. Aion, a higher artificial intelligence that formed within cyberspace, predicts a world-ending calamity delivered by an entity known as the Great One during the game's introduction. Aion displays two aspects of themselves, Ringo and Figue, as persons to infiltrate the human world and save mankind as a key to avoiding the coming of the Great One.

Our First Impression

Excellent art style. Everything seems pretty nice, from the people to the settings, the demons, the visual effects, and so on. Whatever is going on screen, the colors truly jump and seem lively. Not only are the character models crisp and expressive, but they also move really well. I have no complaints about the presentation of Soul Hackers 2.

The dungeon crawling is quite tiresome. The dungeons are primarily made up of bare-bones passageways that you must sprint straight through to reach the next battle or plot event. There are few differences in scenery - mostly just halls that you sprint straight through.

Time-traveling to different timelines and fighting the kaiju to save towers/terminals are vital factors for this game. Basically, you need to both read the story per character and do battles to be able to unlock more characters and story chapters.

At first, players might get confused about the non-linear story-telling but as you play more, you will discover that everything is connected to each other. There's a term and event database inside the game that players can get back and repeat in case they missed some important details.

My Family’s Homeownership Story

I didn't know that there's a branch of Astrotel located at a bustling place like Divisoria. It's an amazing feeling to be able to unwind after doing your holiday shopping. And also, I didn't know that Astrotel has such a cozy room like their VIP room! Let me tour you around the newest Astrotel branch here in Manila.

Astrotel is one of the known budget hotels that we usually saw in different city locations. And just recently, they opened their Divisoria branch which is located on the 3rd floor of Fiesta Shopping Plaza Building. Near the popular 168 Mall and Tutuban Center. Astrotel Divisoria is fully operational and follows the pandemic protocols.

We stayed at their VIP room and to our surprise, it's spacious, it's cozy and the big windows definitely gave another amazing feeling that we didn't expect to experience at Astrotel.

Room Features

As you entered the room, you'll be welcomed with a spacious room and big Smart TV. It has a dining area as well plus the hotel toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothbrush). Pillows are definitely fluffy which is a big thumbs up for me.

Enjoy watching the busy street of Divisoria by moving the curtains aside. The VIP room has huge windows and is perfect for the 5-star hotel room feels.

In need of food? Astrotel has GALAXYLog meals where you can avail yourself of at any time of the day. Galaxylog meals to choose from are Hotsilog, Tocilog, Longsilog. They also have sandwiches available. For drinks, there are 2 complimentary bottles of water available per soon. You can still order bottled water in case you need more. Canned soft drinks and coffee are available as well.

Of course, there are other themed rooms available as well. Themed-rooms are a popular type of rooms by Astrotel and Divisoria branch definitely will not miss having these rooms.

Experience

- Since the VIP room that we stayed in is located alongside the road, you can hear the noise outside. If you are bothered with this, you can let them know to stay in a room on a different side.

- As per writing, the hotel room isn't done yet so we are expecting to have a bidet faucet inside the room rather than using tissues.

- I really enjoyed the bed and the pillows. It is one of the few things I usually check when staying in hotels like this and as I mentioned, a big thumbs up.

I can definitely recommend staying here at Astrotel Divisoria especially since I usually get tired easily when there are too many people around plus it's a good place to stay over the night after shopping. Its location can be accessed easily as well since it's located near the popular shopping places in Divisoria. And since it's still new, you can feel how "fresh" the hotel feels and it adds to the experience as well.
