Often my wife Jodi will share with you (our readers) amazing hair care products for women. Products to make your hair more managable, tangle free, shiny and bouncy and soft to touch, which guys like.

However I sometimes feel left out and think… what about us guys? We care about our hair, too. Okay I’m speaking for myself, but men’s hair faces extreme dryness, gets flaky during harsh weather elements and becomes extremely itchy. Men also like to style their hair and make sure we look good to you ladies when we leave the house.

Schwarzkopf Professional Introduces a new line of hair products for men [3D]MENSION just in time for Father’s Day!

Starting May 2012, Schwarzkopf Professional has launched these great products for men, a limited-time [3D]MENSION gift set for father’s.

Whether it’s for your father, uncle, husband or any other special ‘dad’ in your life. This is the perfect gift to give and most likely something he won’t ask for but would love to receive.

3 Professional grooming products so effective, dad won’t want to share them with anyone. I know I told my teen to keep his ‘hands off’ my set because it’s mine!

The Gift Set Includes …

[3D]MENSION Hair & Body Shampoo, 250 ml
Exceedingly refreshing and thanks to its mild formulation equally usable for daily hair washing and as a shower gel.

[3D]MENSION Strong Hold Gel, 150 mL
Extreme hold for those razor-sharp structured styles.

[3D]MENSION Mattifying Cream, 100 mL
For strong looks with lots of structure, tangible volume and extreme matt effects.

My Thoughts …

I love this set. I have thin hair because regrettably, age is setting in. So my wife cuts my hair and keeps it short. I use the Mattifying Cream to add volume and texture when I’m styling my hair. I like that it’s soft and not crunchy. Yes guys don’t like crunchy (not in a woman’s hair) and definitely not in our own. The shampoo is gentle and smells great! Plus I can use it as a 2 in 1 since it’s a shower gel as well. For me that’s a big plus.

The Schwartzkopf Professional limited edition [3D]MENSION Father’s Day Gift Set will be available for a suggested retail price of $33.25 – that’s more than 34% off the regular price of all three products and will be sold at Schwarzkopf Professional partner salons in your area. You can check their website to find a location near you.

For further information please visit www.Facebook.com/SchwarzkopfCanada and tell them Forgetful Dad from Rants Reviews sent you. I don’t do many reviews so I’d appreciate the support.

As part of the #FinishRevolution blogger team, the group of us were offered to attend an information webinar to showcase all that Finish can do and some tips and tricks on using your dishwasher.

I could not attend the webinar, but guess what? I’m still going to share with the information I learned afterwards to help you get the most out of using Finish and your dishwasher to keep your dishes clean!

Here are some things I didn’t know about dishwashers

pots and pans can go in the dishwasher, along stainless steel water bottles. A great thing if you are a hockey mom and hate washing those out with a bottle brush which takes forever.

dishwashers need hot water, at least (120*) degrees to function properly. Good thing we got a new hot water tank this past year.

clustering or nesting dishes in the dishwasher prevents the water from circulating properly and gives poor cleaning performance.

pre-rinsing is not required if you use #Finish products. Good dishwasher detergent will get the job done!

storing your dishwashing detergent under the sink is the worst place to keep it, activating the detergent before it is used in the dishwasher. I always put mine under the sink. Not anymore!

Finish has a ton more tips and facts about using your dishwasher properly. Things you wouldn’t even think of. So be sure to check it out!

How to Load your Dishwasher Properly

Now if you are like me, you think you know how to load your dishwasher properly. I know I did. But I learned a few things and realized I was actually doing quite a bit wrong to affect the cleaning performance and wasn’t maximizing or getting the most out of dishwasher for clean dishes.

make sure you scrape large particles of food, bones, seeds, toothpicks and other hard soils before placing dishes in the racks.

larger and dirtier items are best on the bottom rack to prevent taking up the entire power of the sprayer.

cups and other smaller items, plastic bowls should be placed up top.

cutlery should be put in handle down, except for knives. They should be placed face down to prevent you from cutting yourself. Put spoons, forks and knives together to prevent them from sticking to each other.

extremely soiled dishes place toward the center so they get the full effect of the sprayer to blast them clean.

Use Finish Dishwasher Cleaner once a month to eliminate limescale thereby avoiding blocked spray arms which will reduce your machine’s performance. Remember: a cleaner dishwasher means cleaner dishes!

Giveaway!

My friends at #Finish have been so generous with their products and information during this entire campaign. Now they are sharing the love. One lucky Canadian reader of Rants Reviews will get 2 boxes of Finish Quantum!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

We have a had a blast being part of this great campaign. We love #Finish and are grateful to have been a part of the #FinishRevolution.

As a guy, entering a contest to win a big screen television, a nice computer or something I can drive, now that is what gets my heart racing. And, usually when it comes to stuff about moms, mom blogging, talking about being a mom. I am quick to hand over the reigns to my wife (Jodi) and let her blog about it. But not this time…

When I learned that Walmart was starting a possibly life-changing program here in Canada, I had to sign up and get involved not just as a dad who appreciates his wife, but as a husband who wanted to talk about what kind of mother my wife is. This was my chance and I wasn’t letting it go by, especially since we don’t often get opportunities to celebrate the moms in our life.

So What’s The Mom of the Year Award?

The Mom of the Year Award is to help celebrate and recognize the huge contribution moms make as role models to their families and within their communities. The award will become an annual program to celebrate all that Mom does and what is truly important to her.

Nominations start Mother’s Day (May 13) through to July 8th, 2012. You can submit your nominations to www.momoftheyear.ca. Nominations can come from daughters, sons, family members, friends, colleagues or community members.

Eight finalists will be selected and notified in mid – August and treated to an award celebration weekend (something all moms need) in September. The Mom of the Year recipient will receive $10,000 for personal use and $100,000 to put toward the charity of their choice. The remaining seven finalists will each get $10,000 for personal use and $10,000 for the charity of their choice.

I don’t know about you but that’s wicked, cool! Talk about life changing.

Why Walmart Rocks This Program

I think it’s great there is more than 1 winner. There are so many incredible women (moms) out there to choose from and although it will be difficult to choose just 1 (with 7 other finalists) it’s still great that Walmart is giving extra chances to celebrate moms and all they do.

The moms are going to be judged by Mom Ambassadors in the selection committee which include: Karine Ewart (Today’s Parent Editor-in-chief, Shelley Broader (President & CEO, Walmart Canada), Natalie Choquette (Soprano Opera Singer), Hayley Wickenheiser (Professional Hockey Player and Olympic Gold Medalist) and Emma Fox (Senior Vice-President Marketing, Walmart Canada).

This contest is NOT a voting contest (which is something I think) is absolutely fantastic. I think voting contests based on how many friends you have and not your true accomplishments aren’t cool. I think this gives deserving moms the best chance to win and I think Walmart is incredible for giving this opportunity to allow moms to shine!

Which leads me to my Nomination…

Okay I can’t really nominate my wife (because we blog) together and I was chosen to help spread the word about this amazing campaign and it breaks the rules, which bums me out a little because I would truly jump thinking of how $10,000 would change our lives and our boys lives. Some things are worth more than money, like family and love and friendship. If I could nominate my wife though I would.

She’s patient (so patient) and loves with her entire heart, always showing her emotions in such a beautiful and honest way. I know my boys benefit from seeing not only her strength but her weaknesses as well, as she is always true to who she is.

Jodi deals with our son Trace who was recently diagnosed with early onset bipolar disorder, and he’s only six, along with sensory disorder. Jodi is bipolar and she is so careful, teaching Trace to open up about his feelings and deal with them. She says she wants to give him the chances she never got in having a mental illness of her own.

The boys are a few years apart, 7 to be exact and so there is always tension in our house. I forget everything due to a motorcycle accident which I sustained when I was 18, so I have a brain injury. I go to sleep every night and forget the events from the day before. I forget things like: telling my wife I love her, birthdays, anniversaries, memories and moments we’ve built and shared as a family. I can only imagine the lonliness my wife endures in being with me. Yet she’s with me, each and every day, always telling me how loved I am, how incredible I am. There is a lot for Jodi deal with and sometimes, being boys, we forget mom and that she has needs too.

Jodi keeps our family going.

She is the rock.

She has a voice and isn’t afraid to use.

She often uses humor to quell things, allowing us to see and accept ourselves in a way that is refreshing and rare.

God she makes me laugh. The way she does a victory dance when she beats either I or the boys at something because she is the only the girl and often feels like the odd man out.

I love so many things about my wife.

I love that I met her online.

I love that she saved me from a life of loneliness.

I love that she showed me I am worth more than I thought, and made me want to be a better man, husband and father.

I love the way she looks at the boys when she watches them play, and the twinkle she gets when they do something silly. She truly appreciates their individuality.

I love the way she shouts at me when she figures something geek out on the computer and how excited she gets about blogging. I love the way she loves us.

I love it when she gets angry, how animated her face gets, how passionate she gets when people get hurt for no reason and how she truly cares for others, always wearing her heart on her sleeve.

It’s a fear every parent thinks about. What exactly is my child up to online? With so many social media outlets for our kids to peruse through, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google + along with text messages, cell phones and various others. It’s hard to keep track on what our kids are doing. The sharing of information has become so mainstream and extremely scary, and can often leave a parent feeling helpless.

As a mom of 2 boys, one a teenager, I have always tried to keep up with my son’s social circles. It’s my job to protect my son from online predators but also from other things like cyber-bullying and keep his personal information private.

However, It’s hard keeping tabs on all my son’s friends because many of the friends he has in his circles are for gaming only. He doesn’t talk them, or even know some of them. With the way gaming is setup online, adding friends is an important part of playing. That’s why we love uKnowKids!

uKnowKids Tracks social networking activity for Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, smartphone calls, texts, and emails. Parents can filter data in many different ways, providing real-time email or text notifications of risky behaviour, Geo-tracking via smartphones to know your child’s whereabouts and keep tabs on your kids online activity, storing it all in one convenient location.

One of my favorite features about uKnowKids is that I can participate in the online community which is made up of other parents with worries over the online dangers for kids. As a bonus I can also set it up to receive daily emails to help me keep track, so that my son doesn’t land in the pitfalls of improper online communications.

There is an Essential account which is free for use to monitor your child’s activity online, comments and friends on Facebook. Plus a Premier account for only $9.95 per month with more features: including notifications and GPS tracking.

I hate trying anything new, especially if it’s something good for me, like vitamins. Maybe because I also hate taking vitamins, even though I know they are good for me. They are like horse pills, hard to swallow and taste awful. And anytime I’ve tried any type of chew or chocolaty treat, I cringe. Usually a chalky taste is left in my mouth, the product is gross or tastes nothing like it advertises and does not give me what I need. I was pleasantly surprised with Swiss Natural’s New Chocolate Fudge Brownie Calcium Chews.

Who is Swiss Natural?

Why is Calcium Important to Us?

Swiss Natural‘s® new product Chocolate Fudge Brownie Calcium Soft Chews are fantastic! I have tasted other chews and products and like I said, they are usually chalky and taste horrible. Swiss Natural‘s® Chocolate Fudge Brownie Calcium Soft Chews taste great! And if you are like me (with a picky eater) at home, then you know how hard it is to get kids to consume their daily intake of fruits and veggies, providing the Calcium their young bodies need in order to stay strong and healthy.

What you Need to know about Swiss Naturals Chocolate Fudge Brownie Chews

I’d like to thank Swiss Naturals for allowing our family to try these out. I am definitely going to make sure these are on our grocery list, since everyone loved the taste of them so much and they provide my kids and myself the Calcium supplements we need to stay fit and strong.

When it comes to my iPhone, I’m very particular about my apps. I only have 16gigs of space, and music is a must for me, along with my social media apps to keep me blogging and connected to the world which are just a must. Not to mention the games for Trace since he steals about 60% of the time on the phone. So with space limited, I choose wisely when it comes to apps that get the job done.

My favorite iPhone apps on my phone

Voxer – is my number one favorite iPhone app. It’s a walkie talkie device and I love it! I can vox my friends in K-town, our friends on the island Steph and Troy, my friend Laura while camping in the states, and my bff Jenny Benny while she’s at work bored. No phoning, you can text, share photos and link to your Facebook friends. You can even have group voxes which is so cool no matter where anyone is. Just hold and talk and have a conversation with your friends. Best of all it’s free! It’s available for the iPhone and the Android market so it doesn’t matter what phone you have. Get voxing today!

Canpages – The best directory ever to look up information. You can type in your doctors office, restaurans, shopping centers, individual stores in your area and Canpages will not only pull up the details, location, maps, store hours, phone number and addresses. You can add the info right to your iPhone contacts so you have it easily at hand next time you need it!

Hootsuite – Combine Twitter, Facebook Fan pages, Facebook personal Page and Four Square into one sharing app. With Hootsuite, a Canadian run company by the way, this app lets you cross share your status updates to Twitter and other platforms without having to log in to each one. It’s user interface is easy and you can add streams for those Twitter Parties you wish to attend.

Slacker Radio – When it comes to music I like a radio station that provides me with everything. Slack does that and they even offer subscription services at a good price which gives you lyrics to the songs you want plus the ability to download your favorite genre right to your phone so you can listen offline without incurring data charges. Slack rocks!

Crackle – Movie for free! I’m surprised at how many people don’t know about Crackle. Unlike Netflix, Crackle is a free app that streams movies you can watch. They are older movies but entertaining enough to keep you busy. Some of the titles include: Big Daddy, Knight’s Tale, First Strike, and various others.

Better Homes Recipes – I love this app! Not only can you find absolutely cool, healthy and unique recipes. You can add your favorites to a list, plus create a shopping list from the recipes so you know exactly what to buy for what dish you are making when you go out. All in one app. It’s one of the better recipe ones out there.

Lose it! – If you are trying to get healthy like I am, losing weight is a difficult task. You start by entering your current weight, your goal weight and your height, and how many lbs you want to lose per week. The app calculates your calorie intake and you can add and track the foods you’ve eaten throughout the day, along with your exercise. Plus anyone else on the app can be added as a friend and more. It’s a great way to help you get and stay healthy!

These are just a few of the apps I love to use on a regular basis. With new apps coming out every day, having the iPhone is tons of fun!

I recently read an article by my friend Cheryl who shared her opinions in a somewhat hilarious fashion by writing a letter Dear Hands Free Mama… based on the article she read online about how too many parents utilize their cell phones and ignore their children and it got me thinking about a few things that were not mentioned.

Although Hands Free Mama talks a good talk and shares her point of view on making more parents aware of how cell phones and technology can imped personal relationships, which we all know they can. Some of the article was just not feasible in my opinion in how parents use their phones and how they shouldn’t.

*Keep your phone turned on at all times of the day. Allow the rings, beeps, and buzzes to interrupt your child midsentence; always let the caller take priority. – Hands Free Mama

I see nothing wrong with keeping our phones on all day long. We live in a computerized world, where online communications are becoming the brink of marketing, business and yes blogging both corporate and personal and devices are used in order to do jobs we must. Children must learn that interruptions happen, it’s a fact of life. It’s like saying your boss calls so they aren’t important your child is more important. As parents we love our children but boundaries need to be set, and children need to understand there is a time and place for everything.

*Decide the app you’re playing is more important than throwing the ball in the yard with your kids. Even better, yell at them to leave you alone while you play your game. – Hands Free Mama

I have done this. I’m sorry but I have. My kids play outside, I play with them, we have family time, and quality engagements. But when I am doing something and my kids become demanding for my attention. I will tell them to wait until I am finished what I am doing, and then I am all theirs. I do not drop everything I am doing to cater to my kids. If that makes me a bad mother then so be it. But sometimes I just need time for myself with everything on my plate.

*Lose your temper with your child when he “bothers” you while you are interacting with your hand-held electronic device. – Hands Free Mama

Again I do not agree with this. If I am engaged on the phone and my child interrupts me. My answer to them is simple. The answer is no unless you wait until I am off the phone so we can communicate. I refuse to allow my children to dictate what I choose to do as a parent.

Now a lot of what Hands Free Mama is talking about is crucial to building relationships and having others be more aware of their technology interactions. It’s important as parents I agree to spend time (quality) time with our kids. But it’s also up to us to decide how to do that.

When I was a kid my dad used to tell us to shut up when he was watching hockey. Sure I felt unloved at the moment, I hadn’t seen him in days. He drove cab and worked hard. As kids we don’t always empathize with our parents or even understand their justifications for taking care of themselves over us sometimes.

As an adult my dad is one of my best friends. He was a good father. I was loved. And those few moments when he got angry or didn’t give me the full attention I wanted, led me to being a strong independent adult who grew up knowing she was loved not spoiled.

I think we live in a society where many of the kids today are not mindful or respectful of boundaries. That many people feel we should cater to them, drop everything we are doing, support their every endeavour, and hang on their every word. This has led to a generation of Entitled Teens who feel the world owes them something. – Jodi Shaw

Finding Some Balance

If you really want to find balance in parenting and technology here are some tips you can do that don’t require you to turn off your phones, drop your every task and give in to every moment your child wants you to. Just some basic ideas. Essentially though your time is yours. Not mine!

No devices at dinner. We get a basket and when it’s dinner or even when we have friends over for drinks. Everyone puts their phones in the basket and gets it when they leave. You are there to engage and communicate with one another. Our friends love this idea and so do our kids. Their friends think it’s cool! Family time is family time.

Set time limits for online or phone working and play. I use a microwave or egg timer. I set a time and tell my kids I have something that needs to be done. I run a blog and have deadlines that crop up. But once that buzzer goes off. I’m done and all theirs. This teaches my kids to be patient and wait and not demand my attention because they want something right now!

Turn Notifications off During Special Events – Most smartphones and phones have a notification center. If you simply turn it off you aren’t tempted to check email or Facebook. The phone can still be on in case someone needs to reach you, but you won’t miss those magical moments with your kids that you both can enjoy.

Engage with your kids online together – Show them that the computer isn’t just important to you but can be to them as well, through online play, family friendly sites, watching videos together and more. Taking away the negative aspect enforces to the child that things are just things, they are important as is the time you spend together.

The bottom line

For me it is that as parents we love our kids. Being on the computer, video games, talking on the phone with friends, being on our cell phones doesn’t make us bad. There should be limits to everything, and our kids should have our attention and love and support. Just not every moment they want it. Like any good, caring and respectful relationship, there should be give and take between both parties.

As for Hands Free Mama

I think your article raised some very valid points. However reading through your comments I discovered that every time someone said something negative you brought up the fact over 100,000 people read your post and managed to get it, often offending those who simply had a difference in opinion and pushing the fact that you have 10 years experience as a teacher, a childhood educator and the popularity of the post should speak for itself for those who disagree with you.

That’s fine, those are your opinions. Here are mine…

Nobody is an expert in raising a child. We all make mistakes. I don’t care if you have 50 years experience in raising kids, or your blog post gets a billion hits, you are not an expert. A difference of opinion engages people, helps them share, learn and grow. And what I know is that some of the best kids were raised by parents who made mistakes often, screwed up lots and were human enough to show it.

I believe it is important for everyone to limit their cell phone or technology usage, but I also believe like drugs, alcohol, parenting, job choices, these are things we have to do for ourselves. Perhaps we are too plugged in, but that is how the future is right now, so finding things that work for us and our families to keep our relationships strong while offline is valid and important.

I’m not an expert.

I’m a mom of 2 boys. I have one child with special needs. I suffer with a mental illness. My husband is a TBI survivor. I love my kids but don’t bug me when I’m playing angry birds. When I’m talking on the phone and you interrupt you will get a time out. If I have a deadline to meet that is my job you will respect that. I will always put aside time for you when you need me and I’m sorry if that isn’t exactly the moment you want it to be, but baby life doesn’t cater to you, and neither will anyone else. But I love you. You are important and yes I will make you feel unloved, unappreciated, unheard, unimportant at times. And not because I’m a bad parent, but because I’m human. But if you call me I’ll be there, especially since on my smartphone I have a double line (wink)

Note to Readers

: This is not a dig at Hands Free Mama. These written thoughts are just my own opinion based on her writings. I do not know her or even pretend to be an expert in her life. I just simply don’t agree with certain aspects of her post. Everyone has an opinion. So share yours. I’m all ears. Just make sure I’m not tweeting, playing a game or on my cell phone when you do cause I’m too busy

We all know as women our hair changes, then changes again and then changes again. One moment it can be extremly dry, the next limp and lifeless, and the next oily and unmanageable. Hair changes, especially with age and so the products we use need to change, too.

For dry hair we’d use moisturizing shampoo.

For limp hair a volumizing shampoo

So it only makes sense to design a shampoo for hair that has become fragile, right?
