One of my favorite MC’s of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor.

I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer.

A Tribute to MCA

Predictably, the internet has been awash with MCA / Beastie Boys tribute mixes during last the days. So Chris Read decides to put together an unusual tribute mix. It’s not a standard “best of” mix, but a collection of some of his favourites, laced with original breaks sampled by the Beastie Boys (largely but not exclusively for the Paul’s Boutique album), acapellas, remixes and plenty else besides.

I can be honest in saying that ‘Licence to Ill’ for the most part passed me by. I wrote off ‘Fight for your Right’ more or less as a novelty record never really seeing it as an equal to the output of artists such as BDP dating from the same period. With hindsight and knowledge of their punk roots and musical landscape of the time, I can appreciate the irony, humour and relevance of the album now in a way I couldn’t at the time. Without You

D-Block representative Jadakiss give us some visuals for “Without You”. The track pais homage to his homie Kay, who got locked up. The track is taken from Jadakiss’ latest Consignment mixtape, which was released some days ago.

Kyo Itachi is a producer from Blanc Mesnil in France. He recently did the whole production on Ruste Juxx newest “Hardbodie Hip-Hop” album from 2012 (available on Itunes and on Amazon as physical CD). For his production he uses the Akai MPC 2000 XL and is influenced by the likes of: RZA, Madlib, Pete Rock and Oh No. Last week, we had the chance to make an interview with Kyo Itachi. Read on below….

Rap and Blues: Kyo Itachi, thanks for taking time for us. You are in New York City right now – is this your first visit? How are you doing and how is life in NYC these days?

Kyo Itachi: Thank you for having me! It’s my second time in NYC but the first time I had just started making music so this time around its very much more intense and productive. NYC is dope! I love being here.

Where to go to eat when in NYC? Do you have a special place?

Well, there’s a pizza place right by where I’m staying (Nostrand & Fulton) cheap and good! They’re really nice, I like it! Although, I haven’t had that much time to go out and check out restaurants and stuff…

You call yourself as a producer with “Ninja Manga concept”. What’s it all about? Please tell us your concept.

This is from the videos games, karate flicks and manga in general! And a ninja producer because the way I do my beats it’s like I’m in a manga, I feel like I have super powers “menge kyou sharingan”, which take you a very special virtual place and that’s what I try to do with my beats.

You recently did the production on Ruste Juxx’ “Hardbodie Hip-Hop” album. How did this collaboration come together?

I’ve been following him for a while, I always wanted to work with him, so when I got the opportunity to get in touch with him more I just jumped on it! We started with 3 records, then I wanted to make a whole album! So this is my project, I chose him as an mc and I released it on my label “Shinigamie Records“.

Please tell us an anecdote about working with Ruste Juxx.

The amazing thing with Ruste is, when you see him, he looks so quiet and chill, but as soon as the camera is on or the mic is on he transforms to a beast! It’s really impressive, it gives me adrenaline rush!

Another alter ego from you is called Kostaire. I saw some rap videos on YouTube. Is he still active? Does he have a new release in the pipeline?

Indeed! Kostaire has a new album coming out soon called “Frontières De L’aube” (en. “At The Crack’O Down”), which is actually my first solo project. Not produced by me but by Phalo Pantoja with features by Ruste Juxx, King Magnetic, Roc Marciano, Kwote 1, Will Deluxe… It’s almost done and should be out in September. It’s very different from Kyo’s work.

You was born and raised in Blanc-Mesnil, a commune in the suburbs of Paris. Growing up there – how was it?

Growing up as a kid is always fun and cool but when you grow up you realize how narrow minded it is, and how very few opportunities you can have, so if you want to get out of the hood you have to have a dream a goal a motivation and work hard at it… Like everywhere I’m sure, but compared with the states there’s fewer opportunities so if you’re lazy, you’re really don’t go nowhere…

Did your connection to Hip-Hop culture begin in your home town?

Yes, I started in Blanc Mesnil listening to US Hip-Hop, the older dudes from around my way put me onto Hip-Hop! They gave me tapes and stuff to listen to. That was dope!

A friend of mine is living in Paris at the moment. He told me, that there are only a few traditionally record stores left. Do you aggree with that? Please name your favourite record store in Paris.

It is definitely true! My favorite record store is Gibert Joseph in St Michel (5th arrondissement).

Which Equipment do you use making beats?

Akai – MPC 2000 XL, I’m a big samples fan! I love samples. I’m a real digger.

Do you have a special source of inspiration for making beats?

Life in general!

At the moment, which songs are coming through your headphones when you’re on your way?

Songs by Medaphoar, Oh No, Ruste Juxx, Artifacts, Alkaholics…

As an international producer you have seen different places on earth. What did you learn about different people and life?

Different mentality, very different from France, different cultures…
