I’m back after a week’s absence with lots of sonic strangeness in store: Shackleton, 2562, and loads of Leif Elggren-related material. Note: Leif and his fellow Sons of God will be guests live in the studio the following week — yow! Mark those calendars.

September 24, 2009 on Rare Frequency

Lots of great music in store this week, including a bit of sonic abrasion by Kevin Drumm; some murmuring, disembodied voices courtesy of Andre Boucourechiliev; some typically atypical stuff by Leif Elggren, and some dreamy synth tones from Emeralds. Tune in!

Podcast Special Ed. 38: Brandon Terzakis: Live on Rare Frequency 09/10/09

This podcast features a live set by Brandon Terzakis from the September 10, 2009 edition of the program. Because of a technical glitch, the sound quality is a little lower than usual, but still captures the essence of Brandon’s mesmerizing performance.

Note: the set starts very quietly

Keith Fullerton Whitman very kindly made this 6 hour, 13 minute long, stereo excerpt of his amazing, 8-channel “Dream House Variations” piece available this week. This version is mixed down using the original, four cassettes. Of course, if you’re enterprising, and have four cassette players, you can make your own, do-it-yourself version of Keith’s installation using the four-cassette release of the piece that’s been released on Arbor. Immerse yourself in dronular bliss!

Brandon Terzakis

Brandon Terzakis is a young, Boston-based improviser. A former student of acclaimed jazz guitarist, Joe Morris, Brandon works with prepared guitar and electronics to create mesmerizingly hazy, near static pieces. He’ll be performing on Rare Frequency on September 10, 2009.

Brandon answered a few questions by email about his work and background the week prior to the show.

What is your background? How did you become interested in making the kind of music that you do?

The first instrument I became serious in playing were the drums. I started playing around the age of 10, just playing at home in my room, then a few years later began studying privately and playing in groups with friends. I played guitar in between practices and that initially led to developing a greater interest more so than drums. Jazz appealed to me relatively early on in high school, so I auditioned for the jazz ensemble and from there I knew I wanted to be involved with that realm of music in some form. After graduating high school, I began studying with Tony Lombardozzi and Joe Morris, whom had a great influence in my pursuit with free improvisation.

Could you tell me a bit about how you prepare your guitar? What or who first inspired you to start working with prepared guitar?

Nothing too bizarre. I’ve recently been experimenting with motors and their resonances with different objects, including how they affect the different tones and timbres of the guitar itself.

Are there any artists, musicians, etc who have particularly strong influences?

A lot of my peers / friends are great inspirations at the moment. There are so many artists in the area doing fascinating things. But, right now I am very fond of works by Ivo Malec, Fred Frith and Phill Niblock.

What projects, shows, releases do you currently have in the works or slated for release?

There is a split LP due out between myself and Benjamin Nelson. We also recently did a guitar/chord organ performance and are continuing to work on material. At this time, there are no plans for any upcoming shows.

Caboladies Crowded Out Memory (Gneiss Things) CDr

Synthesizers are everywhere these days, replacing laptops and pedal arrays as the avant-garde musicians’ instrument of choice. Not that I’m complaining. I dig retro-futurism as much (or more) as the next person and there’s some sterling music to be found (amidst, admittedly, a sea of noisy, jam-bandy dreck) by the likes of Keith Fullerton Whitman, Emeralds, and Caboladies. The latter are one of the more underrated of the lot (a recent show here in Boston was certainly woefully underattended).

While many of their compatriots reference quirky early synthesizer experiments and drones, or Klaus-Schulzean krautrock, Kentucky’s Caboladies hew to the siren’s song of a less distant past. They have even been known to indulge in a little dystopic, idmesque crunchiness upon occasion—though, admittedly, there’s none of that to be found on Crowded Out Memory. Released on Gneiss Things (a label run by Emeralds), Crowded Out Memory is gurglingly trippy as all get-out. It’s also thick with melody and subtle rhythmic details. Though it has a certain oneiric looseness to it, by the end of the interrelated tracks, you realize that it’s rather smartly and subtly put together. A quite excellent trip indeed. Run, don’t walk.
