Thanksgiving, an anticipated time for family gatherings, football game gazing and let’s not forget, the official dining of tender morsels of turkey and its delicious edible sidekicks.

It’s a meal that we tend to wait and prepare all year for. Sometimes even going through strenuous measures such as starving for a day to make sure one can squeeze in an extra two or three helpings and sporting those special occasion pants with the super stretchy waistband.

And after we devour as much as we can, we inevitably begin to feel a little sluggish. There may be a scientific term for the post- Thanksgiving dinner drowsiness but many affectionately refer to this undeniable feeling as the “itis.”

For years, we believed that it was solely the consumption of turkey that would bring about a comatose feeling. Although, the ingredient, tryptophan is highly present in turkey and can cause one to pull out their emergency pillow and camp out on the couch, it is not the sole reason why we fall victim to the itis condition.

When we pile our plates pass capacity, we are consuming the amount of calories at one meal that we would normally spread throughout the day.

It is those excessive calories that causes the sleepy effect.

So, how do you avoid the post-Thanksgiving coma?

It’s quite easy yet some find it complex and rehensible because this is one of the few times of the year where it seems you have permission to pig out.

Eat breakfast and lunch. Think you’re doing a disservice to the cook if you don’t take a second helping of stuffing because you ate your other two daily meals earlier? Well, you will be doing yourself a huge disservice if you don’t. Consuming large quantities of body-reshaping calories at one sitting is detrimental to your health.

Another thing we tend to be guilty of is making promises that we probably won’t fulfill. Do any of these statements sound familiar?

“Tomorrow I’m walking an extra mile to work this off.”

“Oh, yeah. Definitely 30 more minutes at the gym tomorrow.”

“I’m going on a diet first thing Friday morning.”

“My Black Friday shopping will be my cardio.”

I’ve definitely said it before and I can count on one finger how many times I actually acted on it.

Change your mindset. Eat less that day and dine on the leftovers for as long as you can.

I would much rather enjoy my turkey dinner that evening, enjoy a turkey omelet the next morning, a turkey sub for lunch…you get the point.

Instead of eating to the point you can no longer hold your eyes open, eat sensibly and spend your awake hours playing catch up with relatives, listening to back in the day tales and cheer for your favorite team.

Your health will thank you.

INGREDIENTS
5 fl. oz. apple cider concentrate
5 fl. oz. water
3 fl. oz. brandy
5 fl. oz. Cointreau or triple sec
2 fl. oz. fresh lemon juice
Apple slice for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS
In a cocktail shaker, stir together the apple cider concentrate and water.
Add the brandy, Cointreau and lemon juice.
Fill the shaker with ice and shake well.
Pour into sugar-rimmed cocktail glasses.
Garnish with a thin apple slice.

Serves 4.

Being awake at three in the morning, you’re liable to see anything.

In between syndication of 60s shows, As Seen On TV infomercials run rampant. At times, I find myself fighting the urge to creep into my purse to buy the latest, lazy-promoting item.

Fortunately, by the time the toll-free number pops up on the screen, I have fought the feeling and I’m back to watching the Brady Bunch.

Recently I visited the official As Seen On TV website and I was surprised and let down simply because a lot of the items I had never seen before.

The Fat Magnet claims to absorb fat that floats on the surface of food such as stews, soups and gravies. This fat buster works after freezing the magnet and gliding it over the surface where it solidifies. You can buy this or simply use a ladle.

DRYER BALLS
I’ve never seen these blue balls on TV but I have gripped them in a store and have heard they work wonderfully when in use. But, for the appearance of them only make for an entertaining conversation.

BED EFFECTS LIGHTS
Originally targeted for children who have the “monsters under the bed” fear, also describes a nice mood setter for their parents. Hmmm… It could be perfect if you have an alien abduction fantasy.

SLANKET
If the cult-like following of the Snuggie turns you off, feast your eyes on the Slanket. Isn’t this infringement?

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s time to whip out your finest culinary skills to whet appetites and impress sparingly seen relatives.

Imagine this if you will: the Sweet Potato Pie, a holiday staple and the Classic Cheesecake, colliding in the same pie crust to conjure a mystifying dessert that embodies the light and airiness of the cheesecake while caressing the smoothness and down home feel of the sweet potato pie.

A perfect closing to any meal anytime of the year, this creamy concoction is sweet, succulent and satisfying.

SWEET POTATO CHEESECAKE
INGREDIENTS
1 large sweet potato
1 8oz cream cheese, softened
1/4 c sour cream
1/3 c half & half
2/3 c sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 graham cracker pie crust

INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 350F.

In a pot, boil water and place sweet potato carefully. Boil for one hour.
Carefully remove the potato. Peel. Puree in a blender.

In a bowl, add cream cheese, sour cream, half & half, sugar, eggs and vanilla extract. Beat together.

Pour in sweet potato puree. Mix.

Pour the mixture into the pie crust.
Place the pie into the oven for 1 hour or until when tested, the knife comes out clean.

Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes.

Serve with whipped cream on top and a hint of nutmeg.

Serves 8.

Whether you’re a teenager or well into your adult years, meeting the parents of your current flame is a daunting task and must have a checkmark beside it on your To-Do list if the relationship is entering the serious zone.

Need some pointers on how to win over the parents?

Here are a few tips to get prepared for the looming occasion:

BE AN OPEN BOOK: The only thing that will be missing from the impending interrogation is the beaming light overhead. If they are attentive parents, expect the normal questions (i.e. career, background, etc.). But if you’re dealing with overbearing seed bearers, then let the prying begin. If they insist on knowing if the two of you are engaging in sexual escapades, don’t feel as though you have to divulge that information. Truth be told, their parental sense kicked in the moment you penetrated their daughter so it will be of a test to see if you’re willing to kiss and tell.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS: Think of it as a job interview. Well, least it’s pretty darn close to a job interview since in most cases, you’re pining for their acceptance and a position within her family. If her parents are married, ask for how long. Ask for advice. Find out if the father is into sports and if so, which one and his favorite team or athlete. Asking questions not only express interest and builds trust but also gives you access to some once before unknown information.

BE YOURSELF: Just because you should and can be. No one can be you better than you. Your lady friend fell in love with you for who you are. Let them meet the real you.

UNDERSTAND: You can be the nicest guy in the world but the thought of you bending over their daughter every night and twice on Sunday may put a strain on any potential bond in the near future. Just relax. The wall may come down eventually but if it doesn’t, treat your future bride with respect and they will come around. Maybe.

Now that you are prepped for the conversation, time to look into what to wear.

Keep it Simple. Nothing outlandish.

For the first meeting, rely on a more casual look but not so laidback that you look more like you’re lounging around watching football.

Earlier I mentioned that coming face-to-face with her parents is like an interview. Well, there you go. Dress as if you were meeting your prospective boss.
