Come and pick up your copy at Kimpel 119L! We'll be doing a second distribution in January, but books are disappearing fast, so don't wait!

Things are going well at the Razorback. After our two Pacemaker wins at the end of October, we sent in 2009 entries to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association contest. The CSPA has awarded the Razorback a silver crown for the last two years in a row, and we're expecting great things for the 2009 book. We're also sending off our 2009 Associated Collegiate Press entry this week! (The ACP is the association which awards the Pacemaker Awards each year).

It's a busy time of year for everyone, and our first major publisher's deadline is this week. We have a lot of great spreads to send off, thanks to our fantastic staff members who have worked hard on them all semester!

Good luck to everyone with finals! :)

Helen

Distribution!

Well, as of 1:30 p.m today, we had given away nearly 4,000 yearbooks! I think we can definitely say that distribution was a success, especially since we'd only been handing out 2009 yearbooks for two days.

The 2009 yearbook is our first all-color book, and we're all very proud of it. Now that we've given out all of those, we can get back to work on our 2010 book!

The 2010 Razorback is coming along well, thus far. We're into our fourth deadline, and we've covered all sorts of interesting events such as Homecoming, a visit by the former Israeli prime minister, the Wholesome HAWGS program, Zumba dance classes at the HPER, Spring International and much more! Soon, we'll have sneak peeks up on the website.

Thanks to everyone who helped make 2009 distribution a great success!

--Helen

The Books are coming, the Books are coming!

Ladies and gentlemen, the 2009 Razorback yearbooks are here!
Take a minute to let that sink in:
THE. YEARBOOKS. ARE. HERE.

Best day ever? I think so.

These are the first full-color yearbooks in the history of the Razorback so don't miss out on getting your copy. There are 352 pages of people, concerts, profiles, football, greeks, baseball, the ice storm, campus events and more. And not that I'm biased or anything, but I happen to think this is the best yearbook this university has ever seen. :)

So swing by the Union connections lounge next week and grab a copy or if you miss the staff there, you can come by the yearbook office any time and pick one up. But in the meantime! I'm taking a moment to update and share a spectacular moment with you. It's sure to amuse, because that's something Shannon and I do well.

At some point today the yearbook staff received three advance copies of the 2009 book. Which means the rest of them are on a slow boat from China on their way to us. But these copies give us a chance to check them out before they arrive. Helen told Shannon about their arrival, who told me. After I finished screaming like a 15-year-old girl who just got asked to the prom by the quarterback of the high school football team, I jumped in the car and ran to the office to grab one.

Now, Shannon is in Austin, Texas, so she has no way of seeing these gorgeous books until they all come in and we can send her one. Since I didn't want her to miss out on the first look at what we worked so hard on all of last year, we rigged up a solution.

Thanks to the wonders of technology, we were able to video chat and I showed her the pages of the book. And thanks to the wonders of my roomie's iPhone, you can now see the whole ridiculous thing. :)

-Megan, 2009 Co-Editor

*Warning this video contains large amounts of high-pitched giggling from two former Razorback editors.

Too Much Time in the Office: Part Deux

Once again, the stale air of the Kimpel Hall basement has gotten to co-editor Shannon Sanders' head. She's trying to fight the psychotic breakdown that comes with spending 10+ hours in the yearbook office by regressing to a childlike state. Keep her in your thoughts during these trying times....

Setting:
It's a beautiful summer day shortly before graduation. There are several designers in the yearbook office and Kimpel 119L is humming with activity. There are donuts on the desk and pages to proof. All seems well.

Until suddenly, there is a long ripping sound. The crinkle of paper follows. Ms. Sanders has taken the top page of my large desk calendar and is using it to fashion a paper airplane. This portion of the story is not without squeals of delight.

Much to her dismay however, Ms. Sanders is a far cry from experienced in the ways of paper airplane construction. Her first model was basically a 3-fold creation of death. She could have put some eyes out.

Fortunately, Traveler columnist, commencement speaker and man-about-town Gregory Karber was there to teach her the finer points in constructing proper airplanes. He even helped decorate her newly crafted vessel of speed and christened the plane "Shannon Air."

A test flight was of course in order. She flew beautifully. Like an eagle on a morning breeze. Gracefully, majestic, proud. Until Shannon threw her rather violently and she nosedived into the grass.

ACMA Awards roll in

(disclaimer: no, we did not win this trophy. I just thought it would look cool. Who wants a blog post with no pictures?)

Wow, it's been a good year for the Razorback. In addition to winning a Silver Crown, something like 30 CSPA Gold Circles, being named a Pacemaker finalist and having our Web site named as a Pacemaker finalist, we just brought home 21, count 'em, 21, awards from the Arkansas College Media Association. Woo Hoo!

All in all, it's been a great year, and while we get excited about all the awards we do win, I think we also learn a lot from what we don't win. We hoped for a Gold Crown this year, but didn't get one. So that gives us something to strive for next year. Similarly, these ACMA awards are mostly for our design, which is something we have been incredibly aware of the past few years. We have cried, bled, sweat, spent many a sleepless night in the office and snagged professors, staff members and anyone else who happened to walk by our office, stood them in front of a computer and asked them, "Okay, so what design do you like better? This one? Or this one?"
So of course, it is incredibly validating to get rewarded for our design.

But it's interesting that we didn't win a lot of awards for our stories. I think it highlights an area where we need improvement. With any luck, this year's stories will show some of that improvement. And then we can assess our progress and refocus again.

But all in all, we've been kickin some butt this year. Let's hope it continues....
-Megan

Here's the list of our ACMA awards for 2009:

Yearbook Cover Design:
First Place—Shannon Sanders, Megan Garner, Hamilton Hedrick
float: right;" />I like to call this post, "How You Know You've Spent Too Much Time In The Yearbook Office." And I shall subtitle it, "Deadline Three Pushes Editor Shannon Sanders Off The Deep End."

So. You know you've spent too much time in the basement of Kimpel when your poor addled brain starts thinking thoughts like these.

Setting: It's Saturday afternoon and we are crazy behind on deadline. To make things worse, we have a mountain of proofs on our desks that we need to edit and correct. So we plan to go in Sunday to work.
The following is an actual transcript of mine and Shannon's texting conversation:

Shannon: What time do you want to go in to the office tomorrow?

Megan: Ug. I don't know. Ten? Ten thirty?

Shannon: Okay, how about ten?

Megan: Sigh. Okay.

Shannon: Woohooo! It'll be funsies. Like we are captured by crazy bayou pirates who are making us do all of their yearbook work for them in a cool underground fort. At least that's what I'm going to think about.

Megan: Um, you are off a cliff right now.

Deadline drama

Well, suffice it to say we are a bit behind. We have missed a deadline and for some reason, been unable to make it up in the following deadlines.
So we are about 80 pages behind where we should be at this point.
Yikes!

So this means we are pushing harder than ever to send about 150 pages at the end of this month. Which is kind of scary, but not impossible.

But regardless of how daunting it is to try to crank out these pages, we are really excited about our content. We have some AWESOME stuff we are working on.
Here's a few examples to tease you:

-We are sending pages about the concerts on campus. With amazingly beautiful photos of course.

-We are doing a feature I like to call "The Many Faces of John Pelphrey." It's true it pokes a bit of fun, but all in good taste. Pelphrey is the man.

-A profile of one of our campus characters, a young man who rides around on a unicycle. Impressive? We think so.
-And we are sending in four pages showing the variety of speakers we have had on campus this year, from T. Boone Pickens to Magic Johnson to former president George H. W. Bush.

So just mull on that. Sounds pretty kickin, eh?
Now if we can just get these pages finished and out of here...
-Megan

Online Pacemaker Finalist

It's the first time for us.

There's a category for Pacemaker finalists and their online counterparts. We wanted a linked image to our survey. We needed a "FAN US NOW" image like the New York Times. We needed a blurb about who we are. We've added all this functionality.

We also wanted some things that good old HTML might not solve, like an auto-import for the photo of the week.

For now, we've revamped our Facebook presence and I for one think it's an improvement. What do you think?

Pacemaker Finalist!!

We just found out that we are a Pacemaker Finalist again! We've placed these "we do" cards on campus to draw people to our site. We're placing them at Starbucks, the Union, and pretty much any place that students gather.

The cards have "do you remember..." and "we do" on the front. The back has our web address.

The questions on the cards include "do you remember the year the football team's train derailed on the way to a game?" and "do you remember the year UA changed its mascot to the razorback?"

Megan and I originally collaborated on the idea in late November. Now, it's coming to fruition. After putting out just a few cards, e-mails and comments poured in. And we had a problem: we'd lost the answers and they needed to be on the Web site ASAP!

So, we spent half a week pouring over yearbooks and checking the facts. The one that took the longest? "Do you remember the year students launched a rocket to rival Sputnik?"

I finally found the picture in 1958, page 50.

I then pushed the updates to our About page, using skills I learned from Chris Coyier at CSS-Tricks.

The idea was good, but we didn't thoroughly think it through. Throwing cards with questions out causes angry students wanting answers. I mean, who wouldn't like to know when President Nixon came to campus? Exactly.

Sound Off!

Hey everyone!

We are giving all UA students and faculty the chance to sound off on their Fayetteville Favorites!
What's the best way to ditch class?
Best late-night food stop? Fayetteville took quite a beating from Ice Storm 09, and we haven't been able to get out of our apartments, much less make it to school to work on our impending deadline.

A few words about the storm:
It hit Monday night, and the ice and snow is just now disappearing from most of the city. The ice was about an inch thick at some points on cars, trees, homes, sidewalks, etc. The majority of the damage though was from fallen trees. This is definitely the worst winter storm Fayetteville has ever seen, and the town looks like a war zone. Huge trees lost limbs like they were matchsticks, and giant trunks either split right down the middle, or just were completely uprooted from the weight of the ice on their branches. Whoa.
Our wonderful city crews have been out clearing debris, but there is still so much to be done, there's no telling when all the limbs and wreckage will be cleared. More than 38,000 are still without power, including our very own editor in chief, Shannon Sanders. She's going on Day Five with no electricity, heat, etc. And she's not very happy about it.

And in addition to knocking down trees, canceling classes for four days and stranding thousands without power, Ice Storm 09 took some serious chunks out of our plan for making this deadline. We have to send 72 pages ASAP, and we were already working on a tight schedule. Now we have lost a week of time in the office, our writers and photographers have had to push back interviews and photoshoots, and this week in addition to playing catchup, we will also have to take RSO group photos. Yikes!!

Oh, and we still have to design a freaking cover. No big deal.
So more to come, as the drama unfolds here at the Razorback. Also, check back soon for new Photos of the Week, and some great new Facebook pics of the ice and snow!

Archive Delimas Pt. 1

I am so surprised that we even have an Archive section. It has laid dormant for years, without a single page or hint of cover. Now we have one, and boy is it growing!

Over the past couple of weeks we've updated and completed the first step in our Archive section. We've uploaded the covers and at least five spreads from each year from 1990 to 2008. Roughly, we've uploaded about 170MB of JPG's for these different books. And we're just over the five-spread preliminary goal. So, you can imagine how big these pages will be.

This isn't abnormal, we expect it, but we didn't expect our website to have a 200MB limit. Since we're a "cavern site," a server dedicated to departmental pages, we have that limit as default.

Now we're working with IT to increase that limit. Also, we want to incorporate some fancy SEO features for these pages, and that doesn't happen with static JPGs. So, the next logical step is to turn these physical pages into OCR-ready PDF's. But we can't just plug those files into our javascript interface.

Issuu seems to be the answer, and we're incorporating it over the long run. First, we have to figure out if it will truly work for us, if it's adaptable to our large amount of archives, and if we can get the correct PDF's scanned.

That's my update, stay tuned for some innovation on the Archive front. Again, remember that I'm blown away by the fact that we have the section anyway!

Deadline Two!

Now that we're back to school, it's back to work for the Razorback staff! Big things going on down in the basement of Kimpel!

But just to pique your interest, I thought I would give you a glimpse at some of the things we are planning for our next deadline:
-Homecoming
-Soccer
-Men's Cross Country
-Women's Cross Country
-Volleyball
-A story about our new coach Bobby Petrino and his first year here
-Miss UA 2009
-A story about the Hognapping! Two spreads (four pages) from the Razorback Yearbook have been featured in a textbook. The book is called Creative Editing and you can check it out on Amazon.com right here.

The publishers are working on a Canadian edition, and we got an email asking for our copyright permissions to use the pages. Of course, we agreed. Here's a picture of the pages in context, so you can see just what this book has to say about our work.

Anyways, it's pretty cool to think that the hard work of UA students is being put into a textbook for other students to use as an example. I'm not sure exactly what year these pages are from, although I know it's near 1993 since that's when Bud Walton opened. But I bet the yearbook staffers from back then would be proud to know their work was still being acknowledged.

And if you want a look at the new things coming from the Razorback staff, we have just put up some sneak peek pages from our 2009 book! You can check them out here on Facebook, or at the Sneak Peek page on our website. It seems that we've been eating, breathing and sleeping yearbook these past few weeks, and I can't seem to get myself out of office mode. But, it's true, we have officially completed our first deadline of pages. Photos were snapped, pages were painstakingly put together, spreads were edited, then edited again and then edited one more time (YIKETY), and we finally crossed the finish line on Monday afternoon!

There are so many things going on in the office and in life in general right now--Megan mentioned that we are once again Crown finalists, we just completed a huge deadline, and, um, HELLO, it's CHRISTMAS!--but I just can't seem to get my mind off of what we diiiiidn't quite get done before we left for the hioliday--The Cover. (I know, I'm a totally Debbie Downer) The most important part of the publication, the first and last thing that readers will see, that first glimpse of the 2009 Razorback that will emerge from those boxes all the way from China, is yet to be completed. I know that we need to take our time and do it right, and I know that we have plenty of time to get it done...I just wish we had already crafted up some amazing idea that will amaze Razorbacks young and old as they delve into the 2009 book. Oh well, I mean, I need something to think about over vay-cay, right? This will certainly keep my mind busy for a while...

In other news! We are already at the half-way point of this school year! WHOA! and that means we are also at the half-way point of our time working on this book! Hmmm, too bad we aren't half way through completing our pages as well, but I have a feeling that this is going to be a very productive spring semester in the Razorback Office. I mean, how could it not be? With a hot cup of Starbucks waiting on my desk, cookies fresh out of the oven and Rod Stewart blaring in the background, could we be anything BUT productive? I don't think so. Seriously.

Sooooo, as much as I like chatting with you, you non-existent cyber buddy, I think that St. Nick is knocking on my door. I have presents to wrap, cookies to bake and Christmas carols to SIIIING at the top of my lungs. I know, you wish you could be here with me, but you have your own holiday gatherings to attend. So have a very Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, Festivus, Holiday celebration, etc. and a Happy New Year! 14 hours 'til CHRISTMAS!

-Shannon

We Are A Crown Finalist — Again!

Well, we just got word that for the second year in a row, the Razorback is a Crown finalist! Imagine my excitement when in the middle of slaving over our first deadline for the 2009 book we heard about this honor. I pretty much stopped what I was doing and jumped up and down in the office.

The Crown awards are given out by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, of Columbia University. They are one of the top two national awards a collegiate publication can get, and it's a great honor to even be nominated. The nomination means that in March when the CSPA gives out the awards, the Razorback will either receive a Gold or Silver Crown. Last year we got a Silver Crown, so we're hoping to make the jump to gold this year. But a total of 1,771 newspapers, yearbooks and magazines were eligible, and only nine yearbooks were named as finalists, so no matter what we get, it's pretty impressive. Bottom line: The 2009 Razorback is one of the best collegiate yearbooks in America. Whoa!

It's even more exciting because this is only our fifth time to receive a Crown. So stay tuned to see all the amazing things going on with the book and to see how we fare in March! If you want to see who our competition is, you can check it out at the following link:

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/cspa/docs/contests-and-critiques/crown-awards/recipients/2009-collegiate-crown.html#N100F0

-Megan
Co-Editor

Deadline One Stories Are Complete!

As final exams bring classes to a close for the semester, the first round of stories have been edited, bringing my job as the Razorback copy editor to a close until next year.

My job is to help writers as they write their stories and then edit those stories as they are turned in.

This was my first semester as the copy editor of the Razorback, and I have had a blast so far. There was always a lot of work to be done, but I was also able to have fun getting to know Helen, Megan and Shannon while working in the office.

As it got closer and closer to deadline, my job became a little more stressful, but nothing that I couldn't handle. And in the end, the hard work was well worth it.

We have some really great stories so far for the 2009 Razorback! Union Sword Fighters, Thanksgiving at the Grand Canyon, Student Running For Mayor and Artist String Sculptures are just a few examples of the topics that were covered in the first deadline.

Check out this amazing lead from the Student Running For Mayor story, written by Andrea Myers:

"Pre-med. Pre-law. Christian. Engaged. House-owner. Green. Sales associate. Dog owner. 2007 Fayetteville High School graduate. There were many characteristics that defined 19-year-old UA sophomore, Sami Sutton, but one that set her apart from most of her student peers was this: 2008 Fayetteville mayoral candidate."

Pretty great, right? Aren't you excited to read the rest of the story? This story, just like so many of the rest of the deadline one stories, is pretty amazing! I can't wait to see what wonderful work the writers come up with for the next deadline.

Students Pick Up Weapons, Battle Outside the Union

Veronica Pucci, one of our photographers, has captured some pictures of students that, apparently, sword fought on the Union lawn.

A group of UA students meets once a week for live action role playing, also known as LARP-ing. He has illustrated his mother's 1968 high school yearbook. The individual photo pages are rather amazing. He's managed to make everyone of the 72-page book look different. yet, they're all just simple lines. And some of their styles are rather ridiculous.
