Anybody that follows Texas politics knows that Speaker Joe Straus is no conservative. His election as speaker was accomplished by Democrats joining with eleven of the most liberal Republicans. From there he gave committee chairmanships to Democrats (a practice never observed under Democrat speakership)…but after all…it was those guys who elected him!

Yesterday there was a study published that looks at the rates that each party won votes on final passage. The graphs below look at the ’01 Legislative session (under Dem control), the ’03 (under GOP control and Craddick’s speakership) and the ’09 session (GOP Control and Straus’ speakership.)

The results are staggering. Liberal Democrats had higher rates of victory under the speakership of a Republican and a GOP majority than they were able to accomplish in 2001 under a Democrate Speaker and Majority.

With the November elections 70 days away and the GOP facing a strong chance of increasing it’s majority, the first order of business when the session opens is clear: Straus must go!

Check out the rest of the article for some very interesting analysis!

Contrary to common public perception, these data indicate that the Texas Democratic Party appears to have played an integral role in the legislative process during the 2009 House session. The Democratic Party leadership’s de facto negative agenda control (ability to keep legislation off the agenda that was rejected by a majority of the Democratic representatives) and substantial positive agenda control (as evidenced by the high Republican roll rates and low win rates of the most conservative Republicans) suggest that, in many respects, Democrats were near-equal partners in House legislative governance during the 2009 session, either explicitly or implicitly backing virtually all legislation that was passed during that year.

Ok, as if we needed another example of the idiocy of government overreach and the common sense-defying logic they cling to: the EPA now wants to regulate…farm dust. Here’s the funny thing about farm dust…its unavoidable. If you’re growing stuff in the ground then you’re gonna kick up some dust…that’s just how it works…

The new regulations would cover an incredibly broad swath of activity ranging from cattle kicking up dust to driving your car down a dirt road. Even the most mundane of farming, or even rural, activities would be subject to EPA regulation and fines.

A few years ago we would have joked about these kinds of things saying “how crazy would it be if the EPA tried to regulate farm dust!” but now we’re looking at them as real possibilities. Kudos to Sen’s Inhofe and Coburn for stepping up to the plate and voicing opposition.

Sure, being a good neighbor can get you a Sam’s Club connection or an invitation to use your neighbors pool, but when it comes down to it, there are some very important reasons for building relationships with the people who live close to you. Whether you typically go for the altruistic or petty reasons for cultivating neighborly relationships, you should take into account the impact they can have on elections in the coming November.

Connections at the grassroots level are much easier to make if you have a good relationship with your neighbor. It would be awesome if a campaign could pay all the people who work during the election cycle, but there is no way that a campaign can pay for, or have their staff do all the work needed to have a well run campaign. This is where “We the people” come in. It’s our country and we need to get off of our butts and start doing something instead of just sitting around cheering on Fox News or waving signs in protest.

Most people never meet their Mayor, let alone an official on the State or National Level. That makes you, the politically active one, the “representative” for whatever campaign you are working on. You must earn your neighbors respect. You can’t ask someone to give up their time and money without first earning their respect. Political candidates face this issue every election cycle, and if you want your neighbors time or money for a cause, it is essential that you prove yourself neighborly and worth of that investment.

This election cycle is a true turning point, and with the influx of active Tea Party and 9/12 groups it is important that these people work in the most effective ways to get conservatives elected.

This is how conservatives get elected. I have been working on a race for Texas House of Representatives in the 101st District and these are the top 8 things that we conservatives can do to help.

Things YOU can do to help candidates this election cycle:

Volunteer to be a precinct Captain for a candidate. Take over your precinct to connect with people who can help. Commit to helping put out signs, make sure people know when volunteer events are, and to at least one house/block/precinct party/fundraiser, but it’s better to do two: One party to introduce the candidate, then another for fundraising

Block Walk! This is very important. This is directly accessing your neighborhood, even if they live 5 streets down. It is not too physically intensive and allows for communication and delivery of literature, as well as some Voter canvassing.

Phone Banking: Whether you do it at a call center or on your cell phone, this is another very important campaign component. It is easy to make a few phone calls after dinner, etc. If you can’t block walk, then do this. The biggest perk of calling is that you can do it while enjoying your AC!

Commit to putting up/taking down signs before and after the election: Many Cities have time limits to put up and take down signs, and in October campaigns are already busy. In the race I’m working on there are over 150 4×8 signs alone to be put up ( we have to use fence posts and zip ties for these: Very labor intensive), let alone yard signs to be delivered. Every one needs to be placed as quickly as possible and then taken down immediately after election day.

Be a poll watcher/election judge: Working the polls is important. It can be holding a sign outside of a polling place (check with a campaign worker to be sure of the distance. It should be clearly marked at the polling place…) This helps get out the name of the candidate as well as help cut down on voter fraud. Also, if there are a number of strong conservatives there be neighborly, no matter how many military-styled thugs show up, and people will be comfortable to go and vote!

We Conservatives are SMARTER THAN THIS! Every two years we have this push to get people to help, and to be active, but why should they? We only come around every two years. Not only are we called as Christians to be the best neighbors possible, but it’s the most effective way to maintain a support structure for important times such as this.

We all know how to be good neighbors, so get out there and do it!

Using the exploding “New/Social Media” is excellent to network, but we also need to be sure Neighbor-work!

Insanity is often defined as, “doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.” Never is this brand of insanity on clearer or more frequent display than involving socialism.

Today we’ve got a very clear example of this insanity taking hold in regards to the socialization of American Healthcare: Just as Britain is moving away from their failed socialized healthcare system to a decentralized, capitalist approach, we are moving towards the implementation of a socialized system through Obamacare. The fatal conceit of our liberal law-makers is to believe that the failure of other socialized healthcare systems is a technical one, rather than systemic.

The fact of the matter is that the failures of socialized medicine are not due to technical issues but rather because socialism, and the systems which it encourages, is built around the idea that given the right level of bureaucracy and administration that we can build our own Utopia.

I’m thankful that the British have begun to see the critical error in their plan. One can only hope that we can force our politicians into a similar epiphany this November!

Most of my readers won’t be surprised by this but for those of you who haven’t heard, there’s a bit of political strife going on in America today. Some pundits think it’s a temporary political backlash; some members of Congress think it’s astro-turf…others think it’s just a bunch of racists ticket off that we have a black president.

For my part, I think it’s more substantial than any of those detractors give it credit…and significantly more well intentioned. What we’re looking at is an awakening of a citizenry who have been long silent in our nation’s political discourse. I’m convinced of this not only as a student of American politics but also because I’ve spent more than a year in the trenches with the men and women who make up this awakened giant.

One interesting metric to look at when we’re considering how happy Americans are with their government is the confidence they place in Congress. In a recent study by Gallup, it was found that only 11% of Americans say they have “a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in Congress.” This number is down 17% from a year ago at this time.

Out of the other institutions ranked, only the Presidency had a greater drop in confidence…a whopping 15% off last year! Even more illuminating than just looking at the numbers is to see that Congress beat out Big Business, Organized Labor and HMO’s for last place on that ranking of institutional confidence…by a wide margin!

This issue of confidence isn’t one about political party lines or hating the President because of his skin-color. Americans just don’t have confidence that the same-ole liberal policies will save our country. I think America is right!

While I don’t agree with a lot of the article, the author raises a great point about the YouCut Project: even if every budget item that was given as an option in the YouCut project was eliminated from the federal budget, the total would barely be equivalent to a rounding error!

At it’s core, the idea of allowing another level of transparency to the spending/cutting process is good but in an effort to engage conservatives and build a contact database Rep. Cantor and other Republicans their unwillingness to put much on the line when it comes to spending cuts.

The fact of the matter is that if we are going to attempt to stop the hemorrhage of spending out of Washington, DC, big cuts are going to be required. Yet no large or controversial programs were included on the list of possible cuts for constituents to vote on. Representatives steered well clear of cutting anything that might step on people’s toes.

We need conservatives in Congress to stand up against government waste and overspending in a substantive way, not just building their pre-election email list. Show some stones Congressman!

But according to the House Minority Whip’s office, some 280,000 people voted online or via text on the particular measure they’d like to see deleted from the federal budget, in what Cantor’s new media guy described as “the most direct use of technology to establish a more direct democracy in the history of the federal legislature.” Mission accomplished? In a budget in which a billion dollars is a rounding error, killing a program that costs a few million a year may be worse than useless, since it lets activists FEEL like something substantive has been accomplished when nothing has, other than to deprive the people who received benefits under the program in question.

California is no stranger to government largess. The state government, as well as a large number of municipalities are on the verge of bankruptcy.

For any of us that are students of Austrian Economics…or who have just written a personal budget…it’s no mystery how this situation came about: spending more than you have and driving away business leads to huge debt.

Over the last few decades, California has been pointed to as the poster-child for liberal policies. They have huge social programs, arts projects, unemployment and government subsidies of every kind. In spite of the fact that their taxes have been above the national average for a long time, they still haven’t been able to support the terminal spending habit which has gripped their state government…but I digress…

Last week, the LA Times reported that Bell, CA Chief Administrative Officer Robert Rizzo earns nearly $800k per year. They also uncovered the fact that the Bell Police Chief earns over $450k and the City Council members earn almost $100k…for part-time work.

All this takes place in a city with $14.1 million in revenue (it declined by 4.6% last year) and rising expenses of $15.9 million.

The fact that the citizens of Bell, CA were outraged when they found out about this craziness doesn’t surprise me but I do have to ask this question: Why did it take a national news paper to expose this? How did they not know about this a long time ago?

The sad fact is that few people pay attention to our city councils and municipal government. Folks assume that all the action takes place in Washington, DC or their state capitol. The Average Joe doesn’t read local news or follow it.

If you don’t know much about your city or municipal government I would encourage you to check out www.SunshineReview.org and see what you can find out about your city. Another great way is to start attending local School Board or City Council meetings and blog/tweet about them. By doing this as an individual or part of a group, you can add a previously non-existant layer of accountability to your government and protect your city from the kind of problems that Bell, CA is having now!!

Anybody who knows much about my political beliefs and follows online politics at all shouldn’t be surprised that I don’t find myself on the same side as the Daily Kos on many occasions…as in not a single instance comes to mind. I do pay attention to what they say since along with the Huffington Post they one of the pillars of the progressive blogging empire.

That said, imagine my surprise when I came across a blog article from the Kos with which I agree! (Thanks to Matt Robbins for tipping me off to the post.) Of all topics for it to be on, the blog discussed the Second Amendment and why liberals should be against gun control!

The article was written by Kaili Gray last sunday and titled “Why Liberals Should Love the Second Amendment.” To be clear, Kaili, aka Angry Mouse, is no friend to conservatives, conservative causes or “Teabaggers.” However, I was very impressed by the arguments made in the article and the thought with which they were laid out. I imagine that the future instances of the Angry Mouse and myself being on the same side of an issue will be few and far between, if at all, but the Mouse deserves some serious kudos for this post.

I recommend you read the full article but I’ve included a few notable quotes below:

When it comes to discussing the Second Amendment, liberals check rational thought at the door. They dismiss approximately 40% of American households that own one or more guns, and those who fight to protect the Second Amendment, as “gun nuts.” They argue for greater restrictions. And they pursue these policies at the risk of alienating voters who might otherwise vote for Democrats.[...]

So rather than continuing to fight for greater restrictions on Second Amendment rights, it is time for liberals to defend Second Amendment rights as vigorously as they fight to protect all of our other rights. Because it is by fighting to protect each right that we protect all rights.

From there, the Mouse details five reasons for liberals to support gun-rights and the Second Amendment:

1. The Bill of Rights protects individual rights.

2. We oppose restrictions to our civil liberties.

3. It doesn’t matter that it’s not 1776 anymore.

4. It doesn’t matter if you can use it.

5. The Second Amendment is about revolution.

The arguments that the Angry Mouse makes have been made in similar fashion for decades by conservatives and gun-rights advocates…I’ve just never before seen them so eloquently stated by a liberal…let alone from a stage like the Daily Kos!

In short, it’s a must-read article! Check it out.

Message to the Angry Mouse: Thank you for writing this blog. I can only hope that many of your fellow liberals will pay attention to it and change course.

I’m a pretty simple guy and come from an All-American family.

My Dad, Dr. C. Dwayne Shafer, grew up in west Texas roofing houses, pumping gas and showing sheep. After becoming the first in his family to attend college he went on to medical school and became a Family Practice Physician. In addition to his passion for medicine he was called to the ministry and has been a Primitive Baptist preacher for nearly thirty years. Due to a serious accident he is now disabled from the resulting back problems but continues in his ministerial efforts, maintains an active blog and is a loving and active husband and father.

Kathy Shafer, my mother, grew up an Airforce brat. When her dad retired from the Airforce, she came with the family to Houston, TX where she attended school to become a Dietician. While they were each pursuing their medical schooling, my parents met and got hitched. She is the strongest woman I know and is the glue that keeps our family together.

In August of 1986 I joined the family and over the next few years I became the oldest of three sons. Kris and Jacob followed with roughly two years between each of us. They’ve become great men in their own right and I’m glad to count them among my best friends.

As my parents began to consider the education that my brothers and I would receive, they became convinced that it would be impossible for anyone to have a greater interest in the teaching and eventual success of my brothers and I as they, as our parents, felt. Their desire to be heavily involved in our education prompted them to begin homeschooling us boys. It was not a decision that they took lightly (and I’m sure they often questioned the wisdom of it) but the sacrifies they made gave my brothers and I a world-class education and enabled me to become the men we are today. My mother sacrificed a promising career as a dietician and my dad committed to working harder and longer than he otherwise would have in order to pay for our educations twice: once to the state in taxes and again in real expense.

Until about 1998 we lived in a small neighborhood in Stephenville, TX but later bought property north-west of town. The ranch, dubbed “Cripplegate” by my dad, has been the homestead ever since and remains a frequent solace. During my teenage years I was able to work on the ranch raising cattle, riding horses, baling hay and fixing tractors. I ran a book resale business and played in the Ft. Worth Youth Orchestra with my brothers. I got my first BB gun when I was 4 and became a good shot so through the local 4-H club I began competing and was able to shoot in a large number of district and state rifle competitions.

Once I graduated high-school I enrolled in Hillsdale College. It had long been my dream to go there and like the stereotypical first-born I knew exactly what I wanted to study: Political Science and Economics. Over the ensuing four years I worked hard to learn as much as possible about those disciplines, in addition to the extensive core curriculum that Hillsdale holds so dear. I became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and was honored by being voted the Sweetheart of the Rho Gamma chapter of theChi Omega Sorority.

Upon the completion of my time at Hillsdale I was hired and began work with American Majority as their North Texas Field Representative, a capacity I currently maintain. As a part of that organization I work to identify and train conservative candidates and activists in an effort to more effectively involve citizens in politics.

There is no doubt I’ve led a blessed life and it is my sincere hope that the remainder of my life will continue the trend. That said, I’m of the opinion that “to whom much is given, much is required.” For my part, I’m not content to simply exist or tread water, I want to use the abilities and passions that I was given and have cultivated for the betterment of my state and country.

In the end, that’s my goal. Wherever I can make the most progress towards that goal; that’s where I’ll be.
