It is a long exposure shot taken over a tripod with some attention not to get soaked.

I must admit the old part of the city is also a nice attraction and can’t wait to return.

I am still processing all the shots taken so there will be more to come especially ones of the Pier.

I visited some of the well known places to take some weather reportage and I must admit I had some real close encounters during the shoot.

I first headed to Ghargur where the visibility was clearly awful, the sky looked orange and I could barely notice the sea just ahead of me, so I decided to go down where the waves hit the shore.  Down in Bahar ic-Caghaq I managed to get as close as a couple of meters from the rumbling waves, I was trying to keep my camera intact and my self safe too From here we headed to Sliema where the show was more interesting.  The waves here reached probably 6 – 8 meters at times, and probably but the force at which they were hitting the shore was incredible.

We then went to Valletta to see what the situation was there and again the sea was as brutal as the other places.  The break water  just at the entrance of the grand harbour was practically covered and rendered useless.

I wanted to experiment with drastic changes in lighting conditions whilst the sun moves away and moon starts to appear.

The street lights start to heat up and movement on the road starts to become trails of light.

I varied the exposure during the shoot from 8-10 seconds then playing with the aperture so as to keep within the 10 seconds delay that I had pre-set in the intervalometer. In this way I could practice balancing the light of the camera with 0 down time and try not to effect the time-lapse as much as possible.

In order to create an HDR time-lapse you will need the following.

1. A camera that can take bracketed photos.
2. A timer or better known as an intervalometer that will take a set of photos in a timed sequence.
3. A good tripod that will keep your camera steady.
4. A memory card that can sustain some 900 photos in one shoot. the faster the card the better.
5. Patience
6. Coffee or something to fill your time during the shoot.( I don’t suggest leaving the camera alone).
7. Patience and more of it.

Well last weekend in Malta it was a really nice sunny day after weeks of rain so with that nice weather it was time to get some nice scenery so I opted to go to Ghargur overlooking the valley.

This is my first attempt to get an HDR based timelapse which consisted of taking a timed sequence of photos for about 30 minutes. The only difference between a normal timelapse and an HDR timelapse is the amount of stress on the camera sensor.

This is because instead of taking just 1 shot per 5 seconds, the camera has to take 3 shots at different exposures per 5 seconds thus where usually 1 time-lapse sequence takes around 300 shots this one takes 900

The processing time is also doubled if not tripled because the first process involves finding the right point at which the HDR works fine then batch process all 900 shots ending with 300 HDR files.  Once this process is done then you will need to create the time-lapse video.

The result is very different from normal time lapses for the simple reason that the image is equally lit all over.
