Like anything, talking to others about faith is something that some people are really good at and some….. well they burn bridges.

I’m of the opinion that if you want to be good at something, you should practice. There is the whole natural talent and spiritual gift thing I suppose, but I bet that 99.99% of people who are really good at something, have sunk hours upon hours into practice and preparation.

Effectively sharing your faith; why should that be any different? Blow your mind? Probably not. But think about this. The Internet has given us something. It is now super easy to promote yourself. Now I’ve got a business education background, so I think the ease in which you can effectively promote things online rocks! But how many people out there spend too much time promoting themselves, and not enough time practicing the things the are actually promoting? Jon Acuff says that

“promoting makes people think you’re great, where practice actually makes you great.”

If you think about it there is a cross over here into sharing your faith. My pastor says “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Although we of course encourage every Christian to make the most of the web and share their faith, a little bit of planning, practice and preparation goes a loooooong way. I don’t want to take away from those in-the-moment opportunities that God puts in our path, but sharing faith whenever, however and to whoever can be dangerous. It’s a bit like a businessperson going crazy with their promotion, but not practicing how they will actually provide their service to their customers. And when the people start responding, it’s not pretty. I know perfectly well that that this will rub some people the wrong way, but I promise you I’m talking out of experience. I’ve seen plenty of people get “turned-off” from exploring God because of insensitive and preachy Christians just trying to evangelise. Bridges are burnt. The Christian isn’t trying to offend. They are simply doing their best to answer the Great Commission. But perhaps a little more practice and preparation before the promotion could have better results.

Just like any evangelism, sharing our faith online will benefit from good ol’ practice and preparation. How can you do this? Spend a little more time in thought and prayer before you post or share something. Please don’t get me wrong, I know that the majority of us are careful with how we communicate, but I know that we can also be guilty of knee-jerk or “must-share-gospel-at-least-once-today” style evangelism. Our motivation must always be the people we are evangelizing, not the evangelism itself.

But what do you think? Do you think we should take EVERY opportunity to share the Gospel, or do you think we should be a bit more careful and selective with the opportunities we take?

This week, The Washington Post featured an article describing a stadium conference by American Preacher Joel Osteen with 41,000 people in attendance on April 29th this year. As impressive as that is, and regardless of how you feel about Joel, we were interested to see that alongside the physical attendance of those people, more than twice that many people joined in online.

During the 3 hour meeting close to 90,000 people came to the chat room that was set up alongside the meeting and 93%of people indicated a recommitment to Jesus online and 26,000 of those who responded clicked for more information about God.

I guess we really have to ask the question: What does this all mean? Are we to consider all those decisions made for Jesus as legitimate? Or should we be a little more skeptical about it all.

In many ways the online arena is less than perfect for evangelism, it can be impersonal and hard to know what the person at the other end of the line is really thinking or saying. It’s true that there really is no replacement for a face to face relationship where a person is able to share the story of how Jesus changed their life. However, this doesn’t mean that online evangelism has no value at all.

Over the past 10 years, social networks have transformed the Internet from being a place of dishonesty to a space for openness and transparency. How often do you see people posting information about themselves that seems way too personal? I think that it is this new found sense of honesty that lets me believe that while maybe not every indication that a person might receive Jesus or want to know more will be sincere, many of them could be.

So much of a persons journey towards God can be a matter of many seeds planted along the way, and those seeds can come in any shape or form, even from unlikely situations. We should continue to use every means God has given us to share His love and trust Him that He will do the parts that we cannot.

Animation Fixation: 5 of the best from yesHEis
REACH - the yesHEis blog
Rob Stinson

I’ve always had a fascination with the art of animation. I was definitely one of those kids that would wake up early on a Saturday morning to watch weekend cartoons. In fact I remember my brother and I being so worried once that they would start without us, we woke up extra early and found ourselves painfully enduring 2 hours of info-mercials for steak knives and non-stick pans. I even once wanted to become a professional voice artist for cartoons after being inspired by Robin Williams as the voice for Genie in Disney’s Aladin. Well the career didn’t pan out in that direction, but I certainly haven’t lost my love for animation.

Because of this love for the art-form I decided to have a dig through yesHEis to come up with 5 of my favorite short Christian animations. You’ll certainly find with this small sample that animation can move well beyond just saturday morning entertainment. If you like any of these animations feel free to share them from yesHEis.

Darkness

The darkest room can be overcome by a single flickering flame. This animation illustrates that no power of darkness can stand agains the awesome light of God.

Copia A

Can too much of a good thing be bad? This animation makes you think about how abusing or overdoing some things that may initially be “good” can lead to unfortunate consequences.

William Wilberforce & the Abolition of Slavery

William Wilberforce certainly has a sort of historical “Hero” or “Legend” status amongst Christians. But how many of us really know the story of his fight for freedom. This short animation gives you a simple insight into the tenacity and bravery he had as he committed his whole life to human rights. Where did his inspiration come from? His relationship with Jesus.

Martin Luther King – Kinetic Typography

This animation is a creative expression of one of Martin Luther King’s greatest speeches on what it takes and the type of person it takes to be great in this life. You may be surprised by his conclusion.

Theory – A Genesis Creation Narrative

This animation simply shows as the 6 day journey of creation we read about in Genesis. The best part about this video is the quality of its production and creativity behind the design and the way it transistions between each day of creation.

I hope you like the list of films I’ve put together here. There are plenty more in the yesHEis library for you to explore. Also if you know of any other great Christian animations, or even stumble accross any in the future, remember there is a facility for you to so submit them into yesHEis yourself.

REACH - the yesHEis blog
Rob Stinson

Just last week I asked a fairly simple question on our yesHEis Facebook page. It was

“What would be the first thing you would say to a friend if they came to you asking about Jesus?”

Well if a dislodged pebble can cause a landside, than we have a perfect example of what this little question kicked off. 138 comments later, all of which were insightful and personal responses, we ended up with probably the biggest insight into the yesHEis community’s evangelistic activity we have ever had.

The cool part about this unintentional experiment is that even though nearly every answer was different, none of the answers were wrong. It highlighted the personal and unique nature of evangelism. No conversation between 2 individuals on the topic of Faith will ever be the same. You cannot reduce the outworking of the Great Commission to a perfectly replicable formula. We Humans are far to unique for that too work.

So I decided to work it out.

If every person alive is unique and different from every other person alive, and that the resulting possible engagements between any 2 people are in themselves completely unique, and that there are approximately 7,039,332,228 of these unique people on Earth (according to This Population Calculator at 10:08 AM AEST) then the number of completely unique engagements (using the formula x=N(N-1)/2) that could possibly occur at this moment in History about the Good News is….

24,776,099,104,560,054,000

That’s 24 Quintillion, 776 Quadrillion, 99 Trillion, 104 Billion, 560 Million, and 54 thousand unique conversations.

In other words, a lot.

Where am I going with this? (Apart from the fact that I just applied a formula to a concept that I said you couldn’t apply a formula to. .) Basically, yesHEis has been accused on various occasions of trying to “Formularize” evangelism. A few people who don’t understand the heart behind what we do assume we think that all it takes is to stick a video in front of someone via their Facebook page for them to be saved. “All other evangelistic methods can hang up their boots! This is evangelism for the 21st Century.” We know that this is not the case. Could God connect with someone this way? Of course! God can do whatever He wants. He uses methods as unique as the people involved. This is illustrated perfectly by the variety of responses we received.

What we see is the opportunity to ADD to evangelism. Of all these possible 24 Quintillion, 776 Quad… etc. etc. conversations, perhaps some of them could be started or even helped along via creative Christian Media and Social Networking.

I know you’re keen to check out all the responses, so here is a link through to the question on our Facebook page.

Feel free to add how you would respond either here in the comments or on the Facebook page. The more we share our thoughts with each other, the better we are all equipped for these unique conversations when they happen to us.

REACH - the yesHEis blog
Brendan Woods

The more comfortable we become with using Facebook to interact with old friends, as well as making new ones, we actually start to become more relaxed when posting information about ourselves that might be best kept secret. Now I’m not talking about whining status updates, those are bad, but here I want to highlight the pieces of information that may compromise our safety, privacy, personal information and even expose us to identity theft crimes. So here is a list of 10 things I suggest you should look through on your Facebook Account/Security settings to make sure that only the things you want to be found by strangers can be.

1. Change your Security to “Custom”

You can easily alter your Facebook privacy settings by clicking the drop down arrow in the top right corner of the page, from here you can alter both Account and Privacy settings, though it is sometimes a little tricky. Facebook’s default settings tend to be a little liberal in how many people are allowed access to anything you type, where you are, who you know and what things you like. This is definitely useful information for a company like Facebook who makes money through advertising, but also useful for anyone who may like to know more about you. Take a browse through your security settings and check on who is allowed to see your posts etc, and be sure to adjust them individually.

2. Preview Profile

On your timeline, Facebook gives you the option to view your profile as a member of the public, this will give you a good indication of what ANYONE can find out about you. This might also make you want to repeat step one with a little more vigor.

3. Public Search

Now I don’t really mind if my profile can be found via a public search, I’ve set many things to private so you wouldn’t be able to see much anyway. However, if you’re the kind of person who would prefer to stay a little more “off the radar”, then Facebook allows you to alter this setting so you will not show up under a search for your name.

4. Photo Privacy

When you upload a photo you are given the option to choose who may view the photo, in many cases you may not mind if they’re open to the public, friends, or just the people you select. Remember that photos retrieved from Facebook have been used everywhere from news articles to court cases, so be careful of the glamour shots you make available to Johnny Public. It’s also a good idea to go through previous album you’ve uploaded and ensure the only people who can view them are the ones you want.

5. Basic Info

This section of Facebook is easy to edit, and my suggestion is to keep it as limited at possible. Firstly I would recommend removing your year of birth entirely, as your complete birthdate is a valuable piece of information to anyone who may try to steal your identity. It’s probably also a good idea to leave your street address and phone numbers off this space too.

Remember, identity theft is a very common crime and can be a real mission to try and resolve, often taking hundreds of hours of phone calls and emails with government departments to clarify who you really are.

6. Download your “Personal Archive”

Underneath your Facebook account settings page, Facebook gives you the option of downloading all the information they have stored about you. This is also a great way to keep a track of the information you are leaking and have leaked out since you opened your Facebook account.

7. Apps

Over the years, you have most likely allowed many apps to see your Facebook information, from Words with Friends to Instagram, these companies require permission to see your stuff in order to use theirs. Once on the Account Settings page, you can click on Apps and see a list of those that you have allowed “access”, and you’ll probably get a shock at how many there are. Firstly, go ahead and remove any you don’t use any more, then check through each one individually and you’ll be able to change some of their settings and privacy levels too.

8. Security Settings

These settings are here to ensure that it is actually you and is using your account. You might want to adjust the security level to be a little higher to make sure imposters have no way of accessing your account. I’m sure we all have experience with other people taking the liberty of making posts on behalf of you with your own Facebook account.

9. Event Privacy

This is not one to complete right now, but when you create an event you are given the opportunity to select the privacy level anywhere between ‘secret’ and ‘public’. If you’re going to list your place of residency and the time of your party/event, make sure you have the privacy of the event altered to private as to ensure your party isn’t attended by half of Facebook (this has happened before, and caused major issues for the party thrower).

10. Timeline

Lastly, the new Facebook timeline has changed the way we are represented on Facebook and anyone who has access to it can know a lot about you (if you have been posting regularly since opening your account). Make sure you check through old posts, check ins and stories, then go ahead and delete ones that are not necessary. Facebook has also given you an option to limit the audience for past posts on your privacy settings page, this may be a wise option as well.

REACH - the yesHEis blog
George Rankin

Recently a new short film was added to the yesHEis.com INTEREST category that’s impressed us on many levels. Produced by Rock Films for the Rock Church in San Diego, The Freedom Project film is actually a trailer for a four part series called by the same name. If you like the blockbuster movie The Book Of Eli, which has that post-apocalyptic look and feel to it, you’ll love this short film too. It has a strong message to Christians and to non-Christians alike.

Take a quick 5 minutes to watch the film now.

At yesHEis we applaud Rock Films, not only for producing a really slick film with a beautifully delivered message, but because they had the foresight not to tag on the films end text promoting that it was part of a teaching series or church conference at such and such a date. Now that was good thinking! The brilliant thing about this is that they have tremendously increased the usability and therefore “reach” of the film.

I can’t tell you how disappointing it is when watching a really well produced Christian film only to get to the end and discover that it’s advertising for the church, or for a bible study, or a course…. and why not bring a friend! Perhaps without knowing it, the church or the producers have greatly restricted the potential of the media they have just painstakingly made. Perhaps it’s deliberate? Maybe it’s their intention that the media can only be used for the Christians attending that church or that study…. ? Unfortunately it is terribly short sighted.

My hope is that others will take note of what Rock Films and The Rock Church have done here. The trailer to their study series will be watched time and time again by people all around the world, and shared on and on and on for years to come without anyone really knowing that it was a “trailer” for a teaching series at the church.

Recently when we showcased the film by sharing it on the yesHEis.com facebook page, one of our potential 100, 000 + online missionaries left this comment, which again, highlighted to me the need for others to follow what Rock Films has done. They commented; “OH MY GOODNESS what a POWERFUL video, I must share!!” The good news is that they did!

Now isn’t that what it’s all about? Sharing well made, creative Christian media that can be on-shared with others, who ultimately may wonder what this Christian faith is all about.

We hope to see many, many more great films come from Rock Films in the future. I hope you enjoyed watching The Freedom Project and be sure to share it on to others.

REACH - the yesHEis blog
Rob Stinson

Ever played Chinese whispers? I don’t know if there are other names for this game around the world. I’m not even sure if the game has any Chinese influences at all. I think in my Childhood naivety I thought that this was a standard method of communication in China and that they had their national equivalent where they hollered out phrases to each other from across the schoolyard. But anyway, Chinese whispers is what it was called in my hometown.

Basically, if you don’t know, the game works like this. You and your friends all line up and the kid at one end thinks of a phrase such as “The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain” and then whispers it in the ear of the kid next in line who does the same to the next and so on and so forth. Finally the last kid in line hears the phrase and shares it with everyone. By this stage the phrase is often so distorted it only vaguely represents anything close to the original. I.e. “Did you know it’s snowing in Afhanistan….” Why? What people hear, understand and then translate in a message is always just a little different from the message originally intended. Compounding this across multiple “links” in the communication chain was where the fun (or life lesson now I look back on it) was for the game.

So the Gospel. It’s definitely a message. And definitely one that gets shared around a lot through many different communication chains. So how do we know that what we are hearing and delivering is what the message really is? I mean this message is far more important than the precipitation patterns of Southern Europe. We need to make sure we get it right.

Now I’m not proposing to tell you exactly what the Gospel message is. I will leave that to wiser minds and souls than mine, but I do want to share a couple of thoughts. The Gospel translates for us as the “Good News”. And so it is! Undeniably. But sometimes we unintentionally start strong, and finish waaaaaaaaay too early. We communicate how we are lost in our sin, condemned to separation from God and but because of Christ’s forgiveness we can now be saved. The End.

I know it’s not that simple, but if we envision a Gospel message, that is essentially the nuts and bolts of it.

We are lost.

Christ forgives.

Now I know that I don’t have to convince any of you that the “Good News” is actually even more than this. But for many this is the only message they hear. As wonderful as this message is, and in no way am I even trying to reduce the power of its truth, if this was the only part you heard as you began your life’s walk as a Christian, you would be in for a very difficult and sobering ride.

I think that the rate at which many young Christians leave their faith behind after a short time is testament to the fact that every Christian (new and old) needs to understand a bit more about the Gospel message.

To hear and understand the Gospel message in its fullest, and then go on to communicate it with the world, I think we need 2 things.

Realize that the Gospel goes even beyond forgiveness, and

This message must be sought out in our own hearts with God. Ultimately another mans interpretation will always be at least 1 link in the chain away from the true and intended original message.

To illustrate and bring my point home I want you to watch this video below. It’s actually one of my personal favorites because of how it reminds me of what Christ has done for me in this life and the life to come. As the narrator says, “God’s blood was shed for more than just forgiveness.” Essentially after a new Christian discovers forgiveness, I really really believe they need to discover this. If someone spends the rest of their Christian life hanging out at the foot of the Cross they will either fall away or never live their life to the fullest.

My thoughts anyway. Feel free to share yours.

It’s a party day for us at yesHEis. Today we hit 100,000 likes on our Facebook page. Now we’re not excited because we can give ourselves a big pat on the back about how good we are and how popular our Facebook page is. We’re excited about what this number represents. It means that 100,000 people spread across the globe recognise the potential the Internet has for spreading the Good News. So to everyone who is connected with yesHEis, keep sharing your faith and praying and believing for the will of God to be done in this world.

And just for the fun of it, here’s one of our all time favorite videos in yesHEis.

Perhaps most have heard the news that Chuck Colson, former Special Counsel to President Nixon, and founder of Prison Fellowship and The Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, has passed away after suffering a clot on his brain as a result of a fall at a speaking engagement. While many may remember Chuck Colson as one of the Watergate seven involved with the Nixon administration from 1969 to 1973 who pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and subsequently served time in Prison, he also, since his conversion in 1973, has been one of the makers and shakers in the Christian world.

In 1993 Colson was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, and donated the prize money to the ongoing work of Prison Fellowship, the ministry Colson set up to reach out to prisoners and their families and help ex-prisoners. Prison Fellowships vision is to be a reconciling community of restoration for all those involved in and affected by crime, thereby proclaiming and demonstrating the redemptive power and transforming love of Jesus Christ for all people. Prison Fellowship is the world’s largest and most extensive criminal justice ministry.

We applaud Chuck Colson and the wonderful work that he has done. Tens of thousands of prisoners have discovered true freedom in Christ through the work of Prison Fellowship worldwide.

Only last week, Jim Liske, CEO of Prison Fellowship, offered an update with a heavy, but hopeful heart. He says it appears Colson will soon be home with the Lord. “I cannot tell you how much your prayers, cards, and well wishes have meant to Patty and the family—and to Chuck,” Liske says. “He loves you all deeply, and I know that his greatest desire beyond seeing Jesus is that the work he and all of us have been called to will continue. As Chuck would say, ‘Remain at your posts and do your duty—for the glory of God and His kingdom.’”

We pray for Chuck Colson’s family at this time of loss. We thank God for raising up a man who genuinely connected with the common man and pointed them onto the road to freedom. Chuck was a man of God who raised the bar, set the standard, and successfully run the race. We are grateful that God gave him to us to help lead the way.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed… Luke 4:18

We’ve had the film house Stand4More hovering on the edge of our radar for sometime now. Partly because they’re some personal friends of ours, but mostly because of the vision and purpose driving the films and videos they produce. We’ve simply been waiting for the best opportunity to have a chat and with the launch of their new website, that time has arrived. I got the chance to sit down with Mel, the brains of the outfit, and ask her a few questions. So here you go….

An interview with Mel from Stand4More

Mel, thanks for taking the time today to give REACH readers a little snapshot into what goes on behind the doors of Stand4More. The first question I have for you is one that is burning in the minds of anyone and everyone with an Internet connection. Do cat videos have the potential to deliver deeper messages or should they be purged from the Internet FOREVER?

Haha. I am so tempted to say “purged from the internet forever” but deep down I think we all have a soft spot for a cat video. I don’t know if I’d go as far as to say there’s a deeper message there though, just a bit of fun, always good for a laugh.

Obviously your films have a deeper message than just simple entertainment. In a nutshell, what message is Stand4More trying to deliver to the world and who do you hope to reach with it?

Our slogan is “small clips, big meaning.” That pretty much sums it up for Stand4More. The love of God is what drives us and gives us the passion to create clips that will not only be entertaining, but will share the love of Jesus to a broken generation. That’s the beauty of the internet, we hope to reach anyone and everyone, people who don’t know yet about the love of God. We want to bring them hope and potentially bring them a step closer to a relationship with God.

Trying to be consistently creative can be tough. Do you and your team ever experience writers block? What do you do to get through it?

Of course! I think anyone in the creative industry would understand what that’s like. To counteract, we like to get together as a team and brainstorm possibilities. We pull out a white board and scribble down as much as we can and throw ideas around. It helps you to think outside the box when you have other people’s input. If not that, just getting out of the office for a bit. Sometimes you get a bit attached to your work and you just need to have a break and think about something else for a while.

The messages behind your films are more often than not overtly about Jesus or Christianity. Do you ever come up against aggressive responses to your films online? If so how do you deal with them.

Quite often actually. Mainly on Youtube. For some reason, some people feel the need to go around trolling and spamming hate on videos – especially if they have a Christian message, but that’s just the internet culture. The way we deal with it is we don’t take it personally. You learn to see them as a person who doesn’t know the love of God and needs to be saved. It reminds me of a passage in the bible, 1 Peter 4:12-19 “If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you… if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.” I think we can apply that in most situations online. Also, don’t get defensive when you answer but rather respond in love. Most people are surprised by that and then actually end up being interested in knowing more. You then have a chance to talk to them without the hostility blurring the conversation.

How do you see the Internet as a tool for evangelism?

The internet is HUGE and is definitely growing and expanding. Social networking is a prime example of how we can communicate the message of Jesus online. It’s a perfect platform for evangelism! We now have the potential to reach millions, if not billions of people that we have never been able to reach before! People can watch videos in the privacy of their own homes, in their own time and they are often more open to asking questions. The more Christians who get behind it and use this opportunity to evangelize the better.

Lastly, you have already produced some amazing short films and videos. What’s on the horizon for Stand4More?

We have a film we’re working on at the moment about what it means to ‘die to self, and be alive in Christ’. Just putting it all together now, but that’s going to be exciting. We’re also getting a new website up and running and working on a behind the scenes blog. So you can get inside the film makers mind to see where the idea behind the video comes from. Its all on our website: www.stand4more.tv We’re always working on new creative ideas to spread the gospel in a creative way.
